As a kid, you didn’t have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the food you ate in the morning to the clothes you wore at weekends. And it’s a good thing, too--kids need this kind of protection.
But finally, kids grow up and become teens (青少年). And part of being a teen is developing your own mind. But as you change and grow into this new person and make your own decisions, your parents have a difficult time to adjusting. In most families, this kind of adjusting can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And problems like what kind of friends you can have or your idea of joining a party can cause bigger fights, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles (角色), though. During this time, try your best to communicate with your parents. Sometimes this can feel impossible—like they just don’t see your opinion and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you get more respect (尊重) from your parents.
Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and they have experienced what you’re going through.

It’s often said that children are the apple of their parents’ eyes. As a son or daughter, you may also want to make your parents proud. Here are certain things you can do.
Talk to them as often as you can
Every parent wants their children to trust them enough to talk to them when they are happy and when they are feeling low. 5 The same way you would call them when happy. Share your achievements, both big and small. 6
Have patience with them
One of the best things you can do for your parents is to be patient with them, which makes them feel loved. 7 So think of how carefully they treated you when you were younger. Show the same patience to them.
Be helpful
If you live at home, you can be a good son or daughter by helping around with housework. 8 Keeping it tidy is the first thing you can do. Help with laundry, make dinner and even set the table. It feels good when they know they have someone who can keep things together at home.
Respect them
9 When they are talking, you listen and do not interrupt (打断) them. If you have done wrong, apologize and avoid repeating the same mistake again. When you are out with friends, call your parents and let them know you’re okay. When you show them respect, it can go a long way in strengthening your relationship with them.
A.Your parents can’t share your worries.
B.Your parents are always ready to cheer for you.
C.Work makes parents so tired, so try your best to help them.
D.As they grow older, you need to understand that they become slower.

Adolescence (青春期) is a difficult time for teenagers. It takes place when you’re aged between thirteen and nineteen. 10 For example, you used to be happy to be with your parents, but now you need your own space. In the past, your parents made most decisions for you, but now you want to decide things by yourself.
In fact, these changes are perfectly normal. But it’s important to remember that they’ll influence your relationship with your parents. 11
First, let your parents know you love them all the time. 12 They may not say so, but they’ll probably feel a sense of loss.
Secondly, follow your family rules. You may feel these are unnecessary, but your parents’ main worry is just to keep you safe. 13 It may feel like trouble to always remember to phone them and let them know where you are, but make the effort anyway.
Finally, it’s all about communication! 14 Tell them what you did today and let them know where you are going. Besides, ask for advice if you need. All in all, the more you communicate with them, the more they’ll trust you.
A.Keep talking to your parents.
B.Follow your parents’ suggestions.
C.So try your best to follow the rules and stick to them.
D.As your body changes, you also begin to think and feel differently.
E.In their eyes, they have forever lost the little child you used to be.
F.Then how can you make sure that you get on well with your parents
When it comes to shopping for clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on what fits me well. To me, if it zips, it fits. My mom, however, usually tells me I need a bigger size.
When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it impossible. When Mom told me something didn’t suit me, or I needed a bigger size, all I heard was that my body was wrong.
To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together. This continued until I got engaged (订婚) last year and needed to buy some clothes. When I tried on a blouse, my mother looked at me, and I knew what was coming. “You need a bigger size,” she said.
There was no bigger size. I tried to hold back my tears (眼泪). Maybe I could buy it alone, of course, but my mom is my favorite person to hang out with. The idea of looking for a wedding dress without her seemed just as scary as taking her with me.
And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom’s eyes. “You look beautiful!” she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more.
This one didn’t zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother didn’t say that. She just told me how beautiful I looked. In that moment, all the arguments in the past ended. We didn’t buy a dress that day. We decided to see more.
A few weeks later, we found the perfect dress. We both loved it as soon as I put it on.
And during those few weeks, Mom and I also found the perfect fit for our shopping relationship.
15.What does the writer want to show in the first two paragraphs
A.She and Mom always disagree on what clothes fit her because of wrong understanding.
B.In Mom’s opinion, her body is wrong and she is too fat to wear what she likes.
C.She really wants to dress like her friends, but her mom doesn’t allow her to do so.
16.How did the writer probably feel after she tried on the simple white dress
A.Funny and surprised. B.Shocked and sorry. C.Proud and moved.
17.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mainly mean
A.I wanted to shop for a wedding dress alone but I couldn’t stand shopping without Mom.
B.I felt kind of scared when I went shopping with my mother for a wedding dress.
C.I felt like shopping for a wedding dress with Mom though she thought it was scary.
18.Which is the best word to describe the perfect fit for their shopping relationship
A.Missing. B.Embarrassing. C.Understanding.
19.What’s the main idea of the text
A.Praising makes the perfect fit for their shopping relationship.
B.Tears are the best way to end arguments between family members.
C.Love is everything in good communication between family members.
“I’ve told you a million times: put your dirty clothes away!” “Go to do your homework right now!” Do you often hear these angry words from your parents Many of you may answer “yes”. Anyway, there are many chances to drive your parents angry.
Parents become angry and upset for many reasons. 20 For example, some parents did poorly in school when they were kids, and they worry that their kids will get bad grades just like they did. Parents also worry about mistakes they may have made in raising their children. If their kids do something wrong, the parents might think they didn’t teach their kids well enough. 21 If their son or daughter spends an hour a day playing video games now, what will happen in five years It seems like parents can be unreasonable (不明理的) sometimes, but they are just hoping for the best for you.
22 Here is some advice on how to have a stronger relationship with your parents. These days, it’s easy to send a message or talk online. But face-to-face communication is still important. 23 Next, when you find yourself getting angry with your parents, pause (暂停) and try to relax before you continue. Put yourself in their shoes (换位思考) and try to understand their opinions. Then you can tell them your needs.
Dirty clothes on the floor will probably still drive your parents crazy. But with healthy communication and understanding, maybe next time it doesn’t have to lead to a fight.
A.Parents also worry about the future.
B.Maybe you sometimes argue with your parents.
C.Sometimes they’re thinking about their own experiences.
D.Take a few minutes a day to sit down and talk with your parents.
E.A good relationship with your parents can make them less worried.
Here are the posts in a chat room on the Internet. In this chat room, parents can talk about the problems they have with their children.
Marisa: Posted on October 19, 2023 Is it ever OK to lie to a child My 10-year-old son plays soccer. He’s not very good at it, but he loves it. Yesterday he played very badly but happily. When he finished the game, he asked, “Did I play well ” I said, “Yes! You’ re a great soccer player!” Did I do the right thing View (138) Reply (29) Share (12)
Bay 212 October 19, 2023 Yes, you did the right thing. Sometimes you have to tell lies that are not harmful. It’s necessary to tell white lies in life. Your purpose was to make him feel good. Now he’s ready to play soccer again.
Bernie: October 20, 2023 I don’t think there is ever a good reason to lie to our children. Parents are children’s examples. We should be honest in order to teach honesty to our children. If you keep hiding truth from them, they will not trust you or respect you. Honesty is the first step to build a good relationship between parents and children.
Missy: October 20, 2023 You lied to make your son feel better, but you missed a good chance to teach him a life lesson. People should work hard for what they want. Maybe next time you can say, “No! You didn’t play well today. Great soccer players practice a lot. Let’s go and practice.” The truth will make him strong and a good soccer player.
Parviz: October 21, 2023 Parents should be honest to their children, but they don’t have to tell the whole truth. Next time when your son asks, “Did I play well ” you can say, “What do you think ” Then your son can tell you what he thinks. That way, everything you say is true, and you avoid the truth that hurts him.
24.What’s Marisa’s trouble
A.Her son didn’t play soccer well. B.She doubted if it was right to lie to her son.
C.Her son loved playing soccer very much. D.She didn’t want to tell the truth to her son.
25.How many people think Marisa did wrong in this passage

A.To be honest is the first step to a good parent-child relationship.
B.Telling a lie may make parents miss a good chance to teach their children.
C.It’s a good way for parents to be honest to their children, but try not to hurt them.
D.Parents should be honest in order to teach honesty to their children.
During the teenage years, a common situation is that whenever a teenager says, “Mum and Dad, I want to...”, their parents answer, “No, you can’t.” or “You can’t do...” Teenagers often think they are old enough to make their own decisions, but their parents may worry about their growth and development.
Young people further complain that their parents don’t understand them. When something goes wrong, most parents just don’t believe in their children. Without asking why, they think their kids are wrong. And not many parents allow their children to make a decision for themselves.
Yes, it is true that your parents always treat you as a little child. You aren’t allowed to do what you like. However, it should be remembered that not long ago they were indeed children. Parents still recall the childish mistakes their children made in the past. They want to protect you but you don’t want them to do so.
So, if you want to get more freedom (自由), you should first try to understand your parents and avoid lying to them. Try a friendlier way. If you want them to allow you to stay out late, don’t just say, “All the other kids in my class can stay out late.” Tell them as much as you can about what you want to do and where you will be and why it is important for you to stay out late. Then they will say. “Yes, but be more careful and give us a call if possible.”
In this way, through understanding and communication, teenagers can not only get much freedom but also have a good relationship with their parents.

Some people think only school children don’t agree with their parents, however, it is not true. 31 If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. 32 Go some place to cool off. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊重) to them. 34

When I went to college, Mom wrote me lots of letters. He just sent checks and a little note about how great his lawn (草坪) looked now that I wasn’t playing soccer on it.
Whenever I called home, he acted like he wanted to talk, but he always said, “I’ll get your mother.” When I got married, ▲ . He just blew his nose loudly and left the room.

Sometimes we may be angry with our parents. Whether at school or at home, we aren’t allowed to do many things at times. Look! A few young people are talking about their “problems” with their parents on WeChat (微信).
Judy: My parents always hope I can be a good girl. What should a good girl in their eyes be like I’m never allowed to hang out with friends at night. And I can’t wear too short skirts. On the Internet, I’m not allowed to talk to anyone strange. Are they really correct I have no idea, but I only know I’m always upset!
Paul: Compare with Judy’s parents, my parents seem a little better. I’m not allowed to go online on weekdays, but I can do it on weekends. They never allow me to wear any strange clothes like some of my friends, but they often buy new clothes for me. Sometimes on Saturdays or Sundays, they even take me to certain parties!
Rosa: How lucky Paul is! I admire him a lot. Like Judy, my parents make many rules for me. For example, I’m not allowed to watch TV until I finish my homework. And I can’t keep my hair too long or make it curly. Besides, I’m never allowed to talk with any boy at any time. Are they really kind to me I can’t stand them!
Tony: I don’t think all that parents have done for us is wrong. In fact, they make rules to help us. We are young and active, but not serious enough to do everything well. My parents are also strict with me. They don’t allow me to do many things I like, either. However, I understand them. They are trying to lead me to a healthy and correct way to grow healthily. Do you have the same problem Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes
One of the biggest things is when someone becomes a parent, he or she likes worrying about things. They worry about everything about you, from the time you were born. They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. Most parents always think that they have offered the best things to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, cool shoes and expensive school things. They think that they have done everything that they can do for their dear children. 54
But why still can’t we understand our parents Does it mean that we still want more material things No. Actually, what we want is a true family. 55 I think it means a place where we can hide ourselves from the cold world outside. I found it hard to communicate with my mother.
One day I ran away from home and stayed outside for a few hours. When I returned home, I saw all the pain, anger and disappointment on my mother’s face. We knew that we were in great need of talk. We agreed to have breakfast together the next morning. In the end, we decided to go to a restaurant.
On our way to the restaurant, I noticed two notebooks in mother’s hands. She told me that sometimes it was easier to write down our own feelings than talking about them.

My high school life was extremely busy and competitive not only in sports but also in academic subjects. The pressure (压力) of trying to get excellent grades while joining in various school activities could be great. Sometimes it seemed like I lived at school! When I was at home, my time was spent doing homework. Some days I was so busy finishing a project that I could hardly see my families.
I have a brother and a sister named Sally. She was nine years old. We used to see each other. But after I graduated from the primary school she attended, I saw her less and less. I tried to go to her soccer games, but I had my own play practices and meetings.
Then one day I came home, an empty house. I found a note from my mom. she was at my brother’s baseball game. However, my sister was at her friend’s and would be dropped off.
At five o’clock, I went to turn on the light near the front door and saw my sister walking towards the door with her friend and her friend’s father. I heard them talking.
“Is anyone at home ” the father asked.
“Just my mean elder sister—Linda and she only minds her own things. She’s probably in her room as usual,” my sister replied. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even know this man but my sister was making me sound like one of Cinderella’s hateful stepsisters. I opened the door, thanked the father for bringing her home, then shut the door and started to cry.
To make a long story short, a huge fight followed that ended with me driving my sister to her room. But I realized what was worse than the fight was that I really hadn’t been a good elder sister. I had forgotten what was important and what really mattered. I had got caught in a lot of pressure and competition. In fact, my sister made me realize the grades I got didn’t matter to everyone—certainly not to her. All that matters to her is that I’m her elder sister, and that’s what matters to me, too.

When Leon Martin asked for his parents’ advice on how to become a UX designer, they both went silent. “In fact, I had no idea what he was talking about.” said Anne, his mother.
Even when her 18-year-old son explained that it was something about “behind the scenes” online design, his mother was still a bit lost. “I felt like I had totally failed as a parent,” she said. “My job as a parent is to open doors so my children can achieve best of their ability, but how can I do that when I don’t even understand what their dreams are ”
________ Research has found that more than 2/3 of parents in England are now facing the problem that, when their children express interest in job choices, they may know nothing about them. Over 75% of parents feel it is impossible to offer their children good advice in such a fast-changing job market.
Michelle Rea did a survey of over 2,000 parents of secondary school students in England. She found that many parents were afraid their children would just stop talking about their career plans simply because their parents could hardly follow them. “We all know parents’ opinions and suggestions play an important role in shaping their children’s career dreams,” she said. “But we usually depend much on our own experiences. And things have changed so much since most of us were at school.”
Bryony Mathew, writer of the Awesome Career Books, said the world was changing so rapidly that parents should respect their children’s decisions.

A.Most of the parents in England were facing trouble in accepting new jobs.
B.Parents feared that their children would refuse to share their career dreams.
C.A lot of parents found it difficult to help their children with their education.
D.Children’s career future depended a lot on their parents’working experiences.
①Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument Have your once warm conversations become cold You are not alone. Arguments and silences are common between teenagers and their parents.
②Teenagers’ physical changes may cause such family problems. You might worry about your changing voice and weight problems. When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first you want to get angry with.
③It can be a big headache to balance (平衡) your developing mental (精神的) needs too. You feel ready to make decisions on your own. Unluckily, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. On the other hand, growing up is a hard time. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but want you to act like an adult (成人).
④ ▲ The key to keeping the peace is communication. When you disagree with your parents, calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they do not want you to go through the same pain that they have experienced. Explain your feelings calmly, listen carefully, and make them free from worries.
⑤Just remember that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy time will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for your future.

B.So it is difficult to get along well with your parents.

A.To give teenagers some advice of how to face the physical changes.
B.To introduce some ways to solve the family problems to teenagers.
C.To describe family problems between teenagers and their parents.
Most parents don’t know what their teenage children are talking about when they are having a chat with their friends. This is also true when teenagers are using the language of texting to send messages. Words like 18r are easy to understand, but what about “POS” I asked some parents what it means and only 28% got it right! It means that a parent is near and that they are watching what their child is doing.
Parents worry a lot and like to know what is happening in their children’s lives at all times. This means they try to control as much of their children’s lives as possible. However, they have no control over the language that their children use, so it is a useful way for children to keep parts of their life secret.
Parents also complain that they never have serious conversations with their teenage children. Teenagers are always busy phoning or texting their friends-even when parents are trying to talk to them. And there are times when teenagers aren’t busy, but they just don’t feel like having a serious chat with mum or dad!
One way to start real conversations is to make sure that the whole family eats together at mealtimes and that everyone has a chance to talk. Teenagers are trying to find out who they are. They aren’t adults yet, but they are learning how to act like big people.
This means that it is a good idea to speak to teenagers like they are adults and it helps to listen to their ideas and opinions carefully. When parents talk to their teenagers, some good advice is “Don’t sound like your own parents!”. In addition, parents who try to use the language of teenagers often sound very silly. And that’s because most times when an adult tries to use “teen talk”, the words are probably already unfashionable!
83.What does “POS” mean in teenage texting language
A.Parents on site. B.Parents over shoulder.
C.Please open the door. D.Phone off soon.
84.Why do teenagers use their own language when texting
A.To communicate faster with their friends.
B.To impress their parents with new words.
C.To avoid serious conversations with parents.
D.To keep parts of their lives secret from parents.
85.How should parents talk to their teenagers
A.Like they talk to adults. B.Like their own parents.
C.Using teenage slang. D.Giving them strict advice.
86.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Teenagers are more secretive than parents think.
B.Parents often fail to understand teenage language.
C.Parents should try to control their children’s language.
D.Teenagers need to communicate more with their parents.
