He has a strong mind for every match, every set, and every point he plays.”

A Chinese girl shares her adventure stories as a mountaineer
17岁中国女生登顶非洲最高峰
“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Kilimanjaro,” said Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountaineer from Hunan.
Xu climbed the tallest peak (山峰) in Africa on Jan 1. She even stood on top of Mount Qomolangma last May, making her the youngest Chinese girl to climb to the world’s highest peak from the southern slope (南坡).
Xu’s mountaineering journey began on a family trip to Xizang and Sichuan four years ago. Passing by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan, she felt drawn to its beauty and decided to try climbing it. She fell in love with mountaineering right then and there.
For the next few years, Xu did hard training. She went to the mountains in Yunnan and Sichuan every month, climbing peaks over 5,000 meters and doing daily physical exercises like running, swimming and rope skipping (跳绳). All that hard work got her ready for the big challenges she would face on Kilimanjaro.
Above 4,000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the climate (气候) is similar to a desert, with big temperature differences. The whole climb took seven days, during which Xu faced unpredictable weather such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were the main challenges. Xu had to keep an eye on the temperature and change her clothes when the temperature changed.
This climb was also a learning experience for Xu. She was climbing with Xia Boyu, the first Chinese climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. “Every time I felt like giving up, just seeing Xia was enough to inspire me. He was almost 74 years old, but was still pushing on despite (尽管) having bloodied (流血的) legs from his prosthesis,” Xu said.
Looking ahead, Xu has set great goals for herself. She plans to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents (大陆) and visit the North and South Poles (南极) by the time she’s 18. That’s her “7+2 program”.

On the afternoon of July 27th, Beijing time, in the 10-meter air rifle (气步枪) mixed team final at the Paris Olympics in France, Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao won the first place. This marked the first gold medal of the Paris Olympics and the first for the Chinese sports delegation (代表团) at the Paris Olympics in France.
What stands out is the “relaxed demeanor”(松弛感) showed by these two post-2000s athletes (运动员). Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao did their best performance during the competitions and kept an air of calmness after their victory. Different from most gold medal winners’ tears of joy and excitement, the two young athletes stayed very calm on the world’s most shining stage. Not influenced by the great pressure of the Olympics, they focused on their competitions, meeting challenges with a calm mind.
The “relaxed demeanor”, or “sense of ease”, is a state of mind that is neither arrogant (骄傲的) nor anxious. It reflects a person’s ability to deal with stress, and it comes from emotional stability (稳定性) and strong self-control.
However, “relaxed demeanor” is not about being passive or against hard work. There is no doubt that those who want to get success need to work hard. The wisdom of “relaxed demeanor” calls for a calm way and a peaceful mind to face life’s challenges and changes. In today’s society, many may fall into stress and anxiety, and “relaxed demeanor” becomes a luxury (奢侈品). By understanding “relaxed demeanor”, we can relax ourselves a little while working hard and better enjoy the journey of life.

In our society, we often care about what others do, but this can sometimes feel stressful. Especially for public persons, there’s often a hidden pressure. People often show anger toward them on social media (媒体) because of their unintentional (不经意的) decisions. The Olympic champion (冠军) Quan Hongchan suffered from this. According to reports, Quan returned to Guangzhou after attending an event. During her trip, she stopped by an Apple store to buy a phone for her family. This should have been a simple personal choice, but it quickly drew attention on social media. Some people said she didn’t love our country just because she chose a foreign brand.
This situation raises questions about how society sees famous people and their personal choices. Should athletes be treated so strictly for such decisions The answer is, of course, no, Quan has the same rights as anyone to make personal decisions, including which products to buy Being a public person doesn’t mean giving up the freedom (自由) to make ordinary choices. As a teenager, she should be allowed to enjoy privacy (隐私) like anyone else.
However, public persons like Quan often suffer from too much attention from the public Since her Olympic win in 2021, Quan’s life has been under a microscope (显微镜) . The media and fans follow her every move. From her family members’ activities to her personal shopping trips, her life has been turned into a public thing. This kind of attention creates big pressure, turning what should be a kind of pride into a kind of stress.
It’s time to consider why the public pay more attention to her personal choices than her real achievements. Quan is an Olympic champion who has brought pride to our country with her athletic skills. Instead of paying too much attention to small matters like her choice of phone, the public should celebrate her hard work in sports and the fame she has won for our country on the world stage. After all, public persons enjoy the same freedom as anyone else to live their lives.

27.How should we care about public persons
