Urban farming is gaining in popularity in cities around the world. More and more city residents are taking up the practice of growing their own food in small plots, on rooftops, or even in upright gardens. This movement is driven by a desire for fresher produce, increased food safety, and a decrease in the carbon (碳) footprint associated with transporting food over long distances.
One of the pioneers of urban farming is Ron Finley, also known as the “Gangsta Gardener”, who started planting vegetables on a piece of land in front of his house in South Central Los Angeles. His project has encouraged many others to transform unused urban space into productive green areas. “Growing your own food is like printing your own money,” says Finley. “It gives people a sense of control and independence.”
In addition to providing fresh produce, urban farming can have positive environmental impacts. Plants improve air quality by taking in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and releasing oxygen. Urban gardens also reduce the heat island effect in cities, which refers to higher temperatures in urban areas caused by the widespread use of concrete and asphalt (沥青). Moreover, they can help manage storm water run-off, reducing the risk of flooding.
Despite these benefits, urban farming faces several challenges. Limited space, soil pollution, and access to water are significant difficulties. However, breakthroughs such as soilless farming and water-based growing are providing new ways to grow food in urban environments. These methods use less water and can be set up in small space, making them ideal for city settings.
Urban farming is not just about growing food; it's about building the community. Gardens can become gathering places where neighbors meet, share resources, and learn from one another. As cities continue to grow, urban farming offers a way to bring nature back into urban life and create more strong and eco-friendly communities.

4.What is the main challenge of urban farming

城市的 2.gain in popularity渐受欢迎 3.take up 开始从事 4.upright adj.
5.transform...into... 把……转变成…… 6.independence n.独立 7.take in吸收 8.release v.
根据第一段中的“This movement is driven by a desire for fresher produce, increased food safety, and a decrease in the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances.”
根据第三段中的“which refers to higher temperatures in urban areas caused by the widespread use of concrete and asphalt”可知,热岛效应指的是由混凝土和沥青的广泛使用导致的城市区域气温升高,这是人类活动造成的。
根据第四段中的“Limited space, soil pollution, and access to water are significant difficulties.”
心情 2.take a break 休息一下
3.specifically adv.专门地 4.under the guidance of 在……
C项中的“slow down and connect with nature”与后文提到的“这种做法与许多健康益处相关”相呼应。
E项中的“disconnect from cities and technology”与后文“Taking a break from digital devices”为顺承关系。
4.A 细节句。
