My Ph.D. adviser called me into his office, saying I needn't bring my notebook. After 15 minutes of listing my positive things, he looked me in the eye and said,“You are fired from the lab.”
I had moved to Israel from my native India the year before, excited to experience a new culture and study for a Ph.D. At first things went well in my new lab. Then, 3 months before I was fired, I ran into some problems. I made a few mistakes in the lab that slowed my research, but I wasn't aware that my adviser noticed them, and he never spoke to me about any concerns. I'm still not sure why he fired me, but I guess it was because of those mistakes. He wasn't confident that I could complete my research in time as we'd planned.
The first few days after I was fired were especially difficult. I spent hours staring at my computer screen, unable to get anything done. One day all I could do was sit on a beach, crying. I tried to change his mind with promising results, but he stuck to his decision. I could not break the news to my family in India, as the fear of disappointing them overwhelmed (压垮)me. I soon got into a state of sadness and anxiety. Meanwhile, the date for me to leave the country was drawing near, as my visa required me to be registered as a student. I was lonely and without hope.
Around that time, I watched Dasvidaniya, a Bollywood movie that's about a man who has 3 months to live. One line from the movie stuck out to me :“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade(柠檬水).”What kind of lemonade could I make out of my present situation My desire to complete a Ph.D. was never in doubt. After much reflection, I told myself that one failed attempt was not the end of the world, and that I needed to give it another try. With renewed confidence, I emailed expected advisers and applied to other programs. Within 2 months, I landed an offer from a Ph.D. program in Italy. I accepted it and relocated to Europe, happy that my goal of completing a Ph.D. was alive once again.
I'm thankful that I didn't give up my dream and that I found another professor willing to take me on.

The old saying “Use it or lose it” doesn't seem to be true when it comes to someone's ability to preserve and use a foreign language, a new study has showed.
The research team tasked almost 500 British people who had taken French GCSEs or A levels between the 1970s and 2020 with finishing a French vocabulary and grammar test. They included in it a survey of whether participants had used their French knowledge over the years since their exams, and excluded (排除) anyone who had studied a language later on in life.
They found that participants who took their exams 50 years ago and had not used French ever since performed as well as recent school-leavers and those who sometimes used French.
Lead researcher Monika Schmid said, “The knowledge of language is surprisingly stable(稳固的) over long periods of time, compared to other subjects such as maths, history or science. This is likely due to the way language is stored in the memory. Vocabulary is memorized in the same way as facts, dates and names, and this memory may become weaker over time, while grammar is learnt in a similar way to riding a bike, a kind of muscle memory, which is much stabler. Vocabulary knowledge on the other hand, is in a highly connected network, which means that we need only be reminded of a word that sounds similar to a foreign language word for our brain to recall it.”
“Many people are not willing to review languages they once learnt as they fear they will be forced to review some of the more ‘boring’ contents of the courses, such as grammar, but our work suggests that this would not be necessary. We hope that it can encourage more people to pick foreign languages back up if they know it only takes a short amount of time in refresher courses to go back to their original levels,” Schmid added.
28.What did the researchers ask the participants to do
A.Take a French exam.
B.Conduct a survey in French.
C.Learn French from recent school-leavers.
D.Talk about their French GCSE experience.
29.What can help us recall a foreign language word
A.A fact related to it.
B.Our muscle memory.
C.A similar-sounding word.
D.The grammar of the language.
30.What can we infer from Schmid's words in the last paragraph
A.Years of use promise fluency in a foreign language.
B.It is easier than one thinks to pick a foreign language back up.
C.One is able to quickly and easily learn a new language.
D.The boring elements of a language course are important.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Language Tests Taken at School Matter
B.If You Don't Use a Language, You Will Lose It
C.Knowledge of Foreign Languages Lasts a Lifetime
D.When You Grasp the Grammar, You Will Learn the Language

Recent research reveals the harmful mental health effects caused by social media use, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal (想自杀的) tendencies and self-harm. Adolescents who spend more than three hours per day on social media face twice the risk of poor mental health outcomes.
Addictive feeds—designed to make use of personal data to intensify (增强) users' content that will keep them on the platform for as long as possible—have dramatically raised the risk to young users' well-being and made our children addicted to these social media outlets.
In the first seven years after addictive feeds were introduced, suicide rates for girls aged 10 to 14 doubled and hospitalization for suicidal tendencies and attempts increased nearly twice for all adolescents.
Instead of responding to the problem, social media have made great efforts to keep and capture user involvement, and the results have been catastrophic.
Beyond the direct harm of social media addiction, the collection of children's data by these giant companies puts our kids at huge risk, leaving them vulnerable (易受伤害的) by having their location and other personal data tracked, shared and sold online. As a consequence, that data is at greater risk of falling into the wrong hands including human traffickers, identity thieves and others who might prey on (坑骗) young people.
We will not stand by and watch an arms race among social media mega-corporations (大型企业) to see who can best profit from our children's pain and addiction. That is why we should use and are using every tool at our fingertips to fight back against these damaging practices: from the courthouse to the statehouse.
32.What can we learn about addictive feeds
A.They are food that can easily satisfy people.
B.They are Internet content that can get people addicted.
C.They are kept on the platform just for a short period of time.
D.They are personal data stored on the Internet for convenience.
33.Which word can best replace the underlined word “catastrophic” in paragraph 4
A.Destructive. B.Positive. C.Unique. D.Effective.
34.Which of the following best describes the author's purpose in mentioning statistics such as “suicide rates for girls aged 10 to 14 doubled”
A.To create an emotional response in the reader.
B.To show how effective social media have become at keeping users engaged.
C.To offer a balanced view of the effects of social media on young people.
D.To provide evidence that supports the argument about social media's harmful effects.
35.What can we learn from the last paragragh
A.It emphasizes the author's support for social media companies.
B.It describes positive effects of social media on children's well-being.
C.It explains how social media companies can address the mental health issues.
D.It calls for increased control on social media companies to protect young users.

  Habits Language Learners Should Avoid
Successful language learners do the things the unsuccessful ones don't and avoid the ones that unsuccessful ones do! This article is about language learning habits that successful learners avoid.
Always being distracted. Being distracted by noises, people walking past or your own thoughts will take you away from being present.Concentration is of fundamental importance to learning. 36 Study can't make up for a lack of concentration—nothing can.
Only talking the talk. There is little point in making plans or talking about what you are going to do if you do not follow through. 37 You need to walk the walk. If you are only talking the talk, maybe it has to do with one of the other habits mentioned below!
38 We can all get lazy if we are doing things that are not inspiring us. Who gets lazy when courting a partner Who gets lazy with things he or she loves doing Laziness is a sign that something has to change. Forcing yourself to persist will only last for so long, before it gives way to more laziness.
Giving up. “The most certain way to succeed,” Thomas Edison once said, “is always to try just one more time.” 39 And often, it comes only after failing time and time again.
If you are doing any of these, my suggestion is to look more carefully and see if you can move away from these practices. 40
A.Giving in to laziness.
B.Learning to get rid of laziness.
C.In a sense, we do learn by trial and error.
D.Once you do, you will be heading in a better direction.
E.Success, however you define it, never comes from not trying.
F.Action is what will produce results, not just words or thoughts.
G.Without that, you cannot notice the things that can help you to improve.

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Word spread that Derek Rodgers, who had Down's syndrome(唐氏综合征), wanted to attend the Homecoming Dance(返校日舞会).
I, a new journalist for the Campus News, was curious to know who would be his dance partner and decided to cover his story. When I accompanied him on the way home one day, we were approached by Kelsey Stuart, a popular student.
“Derek, I'd like to ask you to the Dance,” she smiled.
Derek was shocked. He couldn't believe that one of the prettiest girls in school was asking him.
Derek's face went red. “Why me ” he asked. “And shouldn't boys be the ones to do the asking ”
“I doubt you would, after all the rough experiences you've had. And we actually have more in common than you think. We both really want to go to the Dance. And we are not like those who are only concerned about personal appearance.”
“But what do you see in me How can I be the sort of guy you want to go with ”
“I know you are a gentleman and you'll treat me like a lady and I'll feel safe with you,” she said, leaving with a smile.
The entire school went crazy when they learned that Kelsey was Derek's dance partner.
At first there were words that were not so nice about them. Their classmate, Billy, made fun of them by giving them stupid names. Betty, Kelsey's best friend, stopped hanging out with her because she couldn't understand her choice at all.
Despite the words around, every day after school, the two still stayed behind to practice their dance routine. Kelsey patiently taught Derek how to lead the steps, move to the beat of the music and spin(旋转) with elegance. Slowly but surely, they improved their dancing together.
The day of the Dance arrived. Kelsey got into a new dress and Derek put on a well-cut suit.
  注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Finally, the two getting ready, the Dance began.

After the Dance, students gathered around Kelsey and Derek.

Dear Chris,
I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble fitting in with your new school. Such problems are quite normal. Perhaps the following suggestions may be helpful.
First, I think you may need to communicate with your classmates as much as possible. Second, it might be a good idea for you to take part in more activities, which usually involve teamwork and interactions with other students and are therefore good for developing friendly relationships. Lastly, faced with some tough problems, you might consider asking your teachers.
I sincerely hope my advice will be of some help to you. If there is anything more I can do to help, please let me know.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Finally, the two getting ready, the Dance began. When Kelsey, holding Derek's arm, entered the room, time almost stopped. Everyone looked in their direction, amazed at the perfection of the couple. As the soft music started up, Derek led Kelsey to the center, his steps steady and fluent, his movement gentle and elegant. Kelsey couldn't hold back her smile as she enjoyed the moment, and Derek, immersed in the dance, was joyous and proud. With a stunning spin, they finished their dance successfully.
After the Dance, students gathered around Kelsey and Derek. Billy, his face burning, came over to apologize. “I was wrong to make all those names,” he said with regret in his eyes. “You two looked great.” Betty approached Kelsey, her head down. “Sorry,” she murmured. “Are we sill friends ” Getting a yes, she even asked how Kelsey taught Derek all those moves. Enveloped in cheers, applause and praise, Kelsey knew she had made the best choice ever, because she chose to see the beauty beyond.
