This month’s smartest tech
I’VE GOT NO STRINGS
Eufy says its new model, E15 (out in June), is fully “self-driving” — no wires or pegs (钉子) needed, which could make it a game changer. Aimed at smaller lawns (800 m2 rather than 1,200 m2), the E15 is smart enough to detect trees, borders and even pets while cutting. It’ll even detect when it rains or gets dark and head back to base.

Last month, Nintendo launched the successor to one of the most popular games of all time. The Switch 2 will cost 395 and Mario Kart World 65 in the UK. You just need to pay 429 if you bundle (捆绑购买) them (a set). Buy the Switch 2 alone now and you’ll get a 10% discount. If you buy 2 sets or more, you can enjoy a 20% discount. Any Nintendo console isn’t really about the tech specs, it’s about how it makes you feel when you knock that smug Donkey Kong off his kart on the last corner. We’ll see you in line.

While we wouldn’t recommend dropping $10,000 on a record player, we can’t ignore how good this turntable looks. The idea here is that sound and light unite. As the player’s needle dances across the surface of the record, the light shines in harmony. Plus, the turntable itself is held up in the air via magnetic suspension, which, as well as looking unbelievably cool, means it’s isolated from vibrations (震动) to provide maximum musical faithfulness.

When Appa passed away peacefully one morning, part of my priceless inheritance (遗产) from him is a box of yellow pencils. Some barely used, some worn-down, but each unfailingly functional, they remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles.
In his 80s, Appa would read the day’s newspaper, cover to cover. A few minutes of reading with the sun streaming in through the bay windows. A spark in his mind, and bingo! He’d get that puzzling word to complete the puzzle.
While my father used words for love, I did the same for a living. In my own mind, it did not matter how much I got paid for writing. I wrote because I loved it, often for or about non-profits — that is until recently.
“You were paid peanuts!” said some of my younger, more worldly-wise friends. Unlike me, they found the best places to publish their work and the best editors to work with. But their words didn’t affect me.
However, when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece they chose to publish online rather than in print, as was originally proposed, I was shocked... and hurt! But like my father, I saw the bright side — so many people read the piece and loved it, sharing joyful emotions and praise on social media. It did wonders for my confidence.
Today when doubts cloud my mind, I think of Appa’s sharpened pencil. Its purpose may have been to solve a crossword. A crossword is complete — and gives one joy — with only so many words, and only when each word rests on elements from the others. Couldn’t my words hold a duality (双重性) that completes my purpose too And so, now I take up assignments, some that pay well, some that don’t, but together, and most importantly, they fill me with joy. After all, it is only our heartfelt passion that matters.
4. Why did the author mention his father in the article
A. To express the author’s love for his father.
B. To emphasize his father’s influence on him.
C. To introduce his father’s passion for the puzzles.
D. To indicate his father’s supporting his career as a writer.
5. What does the underlined sentence “You were paid peanuts” mean in paragraph 4
A. You were paid in cash.
B. You were paid lots of money.
C. You were paid very little money.
D. You were paid with valuable items.
6. What made the author feel hurt
A. The editor refused to publish his article.
B. His article was published in print as proposed.
C. His article was published online with a lower pay.
D. The editor reduced the payment due to budget cuts.
7. What can we learn from this passage
A. Like father, like son.
B. Follow your own path, and let others talk.
C. What is done with passion is done well.
D. Love what you do and do what you love.

In the digital era, where social media floods with ceaseless sharing, 26-year-old illustrator Lina from Hangzhou stands as a striking example. She regularly posts artworks and travel snapshots on Instagram but seldom replies to comments or engages in private conversations. “I love sharing fragments (碎片) of my life, yet building deep connections with strangers feels emotionally exhausting”, she admits. Lina’s attitude represents a growing trend among today’s youth: light socializing, a pattern that prioritizes self-expression over intensive emotional bonds in the virtual world.
Sociologist Min Li observes that social media, once a hub (中心) for developing relationships, has changed into a “self-showcase” platform for the younger generation. Instead of seeking active interactions, they share content like scenic photos or daily routines, with little expectation of feedback. Actions such as casually unfollowing, blocking strangers or using 24-hour disappearing posts show their wish to avoid burdensome “emotional labor” from shallow virtual ties. This shift comes from their desire to escape overwhelming pressure from empty digital interactions.
While critics dismiss light socializing as a sign of “emotional coldness”, it actually reflects a thoughtful adaptation. Psychologist Lu Chen argues that by embracing this approach, young people regain control over their online space — sharing freely without the anxiety of meeting others’ expectations. Even social platforms have evolved to meet this need: many now offer “silent modes”, such as hidden interaction records and one-way posting features, acknowledging the widespread acceptance of light socializing.
In a world tightly bound by digital connections, light socializing strikes a delicate balance between self-expression and privacy protection. It is not a refusal of social bonds but a wise pursuit of healthier, more autonomous online engagement. This trend shows the younger generation’s maturity in safeguarding their mental well-being, representing a forward-looking and thoughtful approach to modern social interactions.
8. What does Lina do on social media
A. She only posts artworks.
B. She shares life but skips deep chats.
C. She never replies to comments.
D. She focuses on building deep online bonds.
9. According to Min Li, what has social media become for young people now
A. A center for deep relationships.
B. A platform for personal display.
C A tool to seek frequent interactions.
D. A space to reduce pressure by virtual ties.
10. What can we infer about “light socializing”
A. It encourages safe online engagement.
B. It makes young people emotionally cold.
C. It relies mainly on platforms’ silent modes.
D. It abandons social bonds to protect mental health.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Keep Silent Mode On
B. Keep the Digital Distance
C. Social Media: “Self-showcase” Platform
D. Emotional Coldness: Online Life’s Secret

Microscopic plastic pieces are everywhere, and a new study reveals they exist in bottled water at concentrations 10 to 100 times higher than previously estimated. Researchers from Columbia University and Rutgers University found roughly 240,000 detectable plastic pieces in a typical liter of bottled water, with the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers used stimulated Raman scattering microscopy and machine learning to detect seven common plastics, testing three unnamed bottled water brands. About 10% of these particles (微粒) are microplastics (5 millimeters to 1 micrometer), and 90% are nanoplastics (纳米塑料) (less than 1 micrometer). Microplastics have already been found in human lungs, blood and placentas. “Nanoplastics could be even more dangerous than microplastics because when inside the human body, the smaller it goes, the easier for it to be misidentified as the natural component of the cell,” says Wei Min, a Columbia chemistry professor and co-author on the study.
The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) stated it had “very limited notice” to review the study, arguing the new detection method needs to be fully reviewed by the scientific community and more research needs to be done to develop standardized methods for measuring and quantifying nanoplastics in our environment. It added there is no scientific agreement on the potential health impacts of nano and microplastic particles and media reports unnecessarily scare consumers.
Phoebe Stapleton, another co-author of the study, says researchers already know that nanoplastics are in water. “But if you can’t quantify them or create images of them, it’s hard to believe they really exist. The importance of our team’s research is that it now reveals this clearly — it not only provides computer-generated images, but also lets us measure the nanoplastics. Even more importantly, it offers chemical analysis of those measurements.” she says, adding that the research helps people better understand how much plastic humans usually take into their bodies and what effects it has.
12. How does the author introduce the new findings
A. By giving examples. B. By quoting an expert.
C. By defining a concept. D. By providing statistics.
13. What could make nanoplastics a greater threat compared with microplastics
A. Difficulty in detecting it.
B. Failure to create its image.
C. Larger quantity than microplastics.
D. High concentration levels in bottled water.
14. What is IBWA’s attitude towards the study
A. Objective. B. Approving.
C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. What is Phoebe Stapleton’s remark mainly about
A. Uniqueness of the study.
B. Significance of the study.
C. Potential application of the study.
D. Possible direction for further study.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
For years, we’ve treated sustainability only as a knowledge problem. If people just understood the climate crisis — the graphs, melting ice caps and emissions charts, they’d change. ____16____.
Take smoking as an example. In the 1980s, everyone was aware that it was harmful to their health but research cites that it was smoking policies and bans that had real impact. Numbers dropped because the world around smokers changed quietly, structurally and persistently.
If guilt isn’t working, design might
A 2022 Pew survey found that majorities in most countries consider climate change a serious threat to their nation’s future. Yet behavioural change, especially in food, transport and energy use, falls far behind. ____17____. Awareness does not equal action and information alone is insufficient. We must stop relying on guilt and start focusing on systemic design that makes sustainable choices easy and automatic.
Why we need a better story
Psychologists have shown that narratives are more persuasive than facts. In one study, people were more likely to act when shown a story about a single identifiable person than overwhelming statistics. Yet, the dominant climate narrative today is not a story. ____18____. And it centers around guilt, sacrifice and shame.
Food is the frontline of climate
Food is key to climate action. ____19____. So we need to design food environments that make climate-smart choices intuitive (出于直觉的), tasty and culturally relevant.
____20____
The most impactful thing we can do isn’t to convince people to care more but to build systems that make better choices easier, cheaper and more joyful. These are systems that reward low-emission lifestyles, push people toward sustainable meals and normalize pride rather than shame in acting for the planet.
A. It’s a warning in fact
B. Systems must change, not people
C. Behaviour is downstream of design
D. This is the contradiction we must face
E. That’s exactly the playbook sustainability needs now
F. But behaviour doesn’t work that way and we’ve seen it before
G. Food systems account for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions

Sarah has always had a deep passion for painting, and her greatest dream is to host her own art exhibition someday. Her art teacher told her about an upcoming local youth arts show — and she’d already started preparing for it. However, her parents, both practicing doctors, urged her hard to go into medicine, arguing it would give her a stable, secure future.
One evening at dinner, her father said firmly, “It’s time you start preparing for the medical school entrance exams. You’re smart and hard-working — you’ll surely thrive in this field.” Sarah set down her fork, disappointment clouding her eyes. “But I don’t want to be a doctor,” she insisted. “Painting is what I’m truly passionate about.” Her mother sighed softly, “Art is a wonderful hobby, but it doesn’t pay the bills. You need to be practical about your future.” Growing frustrated, Sarah stood up, stormed to her bedroom and locked the door. Staring at her half-finished painting, tears welled up in her eyes — trapped between her love for art and her parents’ expectations.
That night, Sarah lay awake, tossing and turning. She hated the thought of letting down her supportive parents, yet she couldn’t bear the idea of giving up her dream. The next day at school, her best friend Lily noticed her gloom and asked what was wrong. After Sarah poured out her troubles, Lily advised, “Follow your heart — but prove to your parents how serious you are about painting.”
Taking Lily’s advice, Sarah spent the weekend crafting a series of paintings that laid bare her emotions. She also looked up artists who’d built successful careers out of their art. On Monday evening, she asked her parents into her room, showed them her portfolio (作品集) and notes, and said, “I know you’re worried, but I believe I can make it as an artist — selling online, teaching, or doing custom work. Please give me a chance.” Her parents listened quietly, their faces softening as they looked over her work.

After Sarah finished speaking, there was a long silence in the room. Her father finally cleared his throat. “We see your dedication, Sarah,” he said, his voice gentle. “Your paintings are expressive, and your research shows thoughtfulness.” Her mother added, “We just want you to have financial security. But perhaps… you could pursue art seriously while keeping science as a backup option ” Sarah’s heart raced as they agreed to let her enter the youth arts show. If she could prove her talent there, they would reconsider supporting her art path. Relieved, Sarah hugged them, tears of hope replacing her earlier despair.
A week later, Sarah received a surprising call from her art teacher. “Your entry won second prize!” Ms. Evans exclaimed. “The judges praised its emotional depth, and a local gallery owner wants to display it next month!” Sarah gasped, unable to believe her ears. She immediately shared the news with her parents. Seeing her radiant joy and tangible achievement, their doubts melted. Her father smiled warmly, “We’re proud of you, sweetheart. Let’s discuss how to support your dream properly.” That night, Sarah added finishing touches to her winning piece — a vibrant canvas titled “Compromise,” symbolizing her hard-won balance between passion and practicality.
