As a fan of computer science, Zeng Guolai wanted to buy a classic book about computers. But his parents turned him down. “You won’t have time to read it,” they said.
However, this 16-year-old from the High School finally got it—by lying. As he said the book was required by his school, his parents agreed.
Many teenagers have had similar experiences to Zeng’s. They have lied to their parents for different reasons including getting things they want, staying away from criticism (批评), and winning their parents’ praise (表扬).
But there are some main reasons behind this situation, said Wang Bing, a famous teacher in mental health at Peking University. When students are becoming independent and want more freedom, parents just don’t let go.
“For teenagers, lying seems to be a good way to get freedom and students don’t want to have arguments with their parents, either,” Wang told the newspaper.
In fact, as children grow up, they have less communication with their parents which leads to less mutual (相互的) trust. This is also an important reason for lying, as Wang mentioned.
But unlike many parents who see telling lies as a signal of children becoming rebellious (叛逆的) or “bad”, Wang believed that this action should hardly be called a “moral (道德的) problem”. Rather (相反), it is a way for teenagers to step into the adults’ world—They have long been told to do things, but as they are growing up, they want to challenge social rules and see the results.
Parents should walk in their children’s shoes and guide their children to think positively (正面地), rather than (而不是) simply blame (责备) them when things go wrong. As for teenagers, ________.
1.Did Zeng Guolai get the book he wanted at last
2.Why did many teenagers lie to their parents just like Zeng
3.According to Wang Bing, what are the main reasons why teens lie to their parents
4.What would the writer say at the end of the text (at least 2 points)

Did you have an experience of going from one after school class to another on weekends Chinese students used to be busier on weekends than weekdays, because they had to take so many after school classes. Many of them spent a lot of time on these classes to learn exam skills.
But Ma Xiaohua, a student from Grade 8 in Zhengzhou, spent a winter holiday that was quite different last year. “I felt more relaxed this holiday, because the homework is clearly much less and more enjoyable,” said Ma. Things like doing some housework, making an English video to introduce a Chinese custom, and reading aloud Home Letters by Fu Lei were part of her winter holiday homework. Ma found herself doing more practice based (基于实践的) learning instead of always having her nose to workbooks. Another big difference for her was that she didn’t have after school classes anymore. “This gives me more time to play badminton and get healthier,” she said.
Like Ma, junior high school students welcomed the changes, as they don’t feel that stressed (有压力的). However, it doesn’t mean schoolwork isn’t important anymore. Some students feel worried about the changes. “I used to take many after school classes, but now I lose instruction (指导).” said ninth grader Zhou Xiuwei from Nanjing. “So I felt more stressed this holiday. I can only depend on myself.”

Maybe you usually hate school. This feeling may last long. It is said that you have much pressure. Sometimes it’s a problem with your classes and schoolwork. Maybe the work is too easy and you get bored. Or maybe the work is too hard, or you don’t feel as happy as the other students. In a long time, and it may seem that you will never catch up with others. When you know why you don’t like school, you can do like this.
It’s a good idea to talk to someone about your problems. Your mom, dad, friends, teachers, or even classmates will be able to help you.
Another good idea is to write down the feeling about school. For example, keep a diary or write in a notebook. It is a good way to let your hating-school feelings out. And you don’t have to share it with others. The next time you find yourself hating school, this will also help you.
Make a list of everything that you hate or enjoy—even there is only one thing. See what you can do to let it out. We should try to pay attention to our hobbies, and you might be able to put the good feeling back in school!

In our life, many people may have a mental (心理的) problem. Some people may get over it, but others may not go away easily.
“These days, students spend most of their time studying and building up relationships with classmates and teachers. With more people, the competition is harder at school,” the WHO said. A study also found that students’ unhappiness came from the Internet. “Online, teenagers often see messages about perfection (完美) and these make them get worried about themselves for not being the best. But they shouldn’t worry about such things at all,” said an expert.
Some doctors also say that teenagers don’t ask for help when they have mental problems. They are afraid that others will laugh at them. And in the UK, over 75 percent of teenagers believe having mental problems is their own problem. A study showed in 2017 that a quarter of teenagers in the UK wouldn’t ask for help if they had a mental problem. “I don’t want others, even the doctors, to know what I’m thinking. So, I may help myself out,” some teenagers said.
“These people may be creating problems for themselves in the future,” the expert said. “My advice for teenagers is, if you feel something is wrong, just ask for help. The earlier you ask, the better you will get.”

Technology is everywhere and it influences our daily lives including the kinds of books. There are two main kinds of books—paper books and e-books for kids to choose from. The question becomes, is one better than another
The industry for selling e-books became a mainstream (主流) business in the late 1990s. E-books often have more colorful photos and sounds, and they may appear a lot more interesting than paper books. Research proves that e-books are good for kids. Kids learn more information when they are reading e-books because technology is fun and more enjoyable. Studies have shown that some kids may interact better when reading e-books. Some kids may have difficulties reading certain words. An e-book with lots of images and colors puts their imaginative spirit to the test. Good e-books help kids develop their reading skills faster. Highlighted text draws more attention, and the more time readers spend looking at words and hearing them out loud, the better chances (机会) they have to remember them. What’s more, e-books are lightweight and they can easily be read over and over again.
However, e-books come with several problems, too. Many parents and even experts believe that e-books are not good for the general health of kids. Kids need to read their e-books on devices (设备) such as their mobile phones, computers or e-readers. Since kids already spend too much time using their computers or mobile phones, parents worry that reading e-books makes their kids spend too much time in front of screens. Kids are more drawn by the technology and they care less about the stories. If kids are getting all their answers from e-books, their interaction with other people is greatly decreased (减少). Discussing word meanings and characters encourages interaction and learning with others.
24.What does technology influence
25.When did the industry for selling e-books become a mainstream business
26.What devices do kids need to read their e-books
27.What do you think of e-books Why (Please give two reasons)

Are you on social media How old were you when you started using it
Australia is making a new law. After it passes, people will have to be above a certain age to use social media. It is not known what the age will be, but it will most likely be between 14 and 16, said Reuters on Sept 10. The new law will start by the end of the year.
“We want them to have real experiences with real people because we know that social media is causing social problems,” said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
He has a point. In a study on 20,000 Australian students in the 10th grade, many felt social media made them less happy. In another study, around 60 percent of parents thought social media was bad for children’s mental health (心理健康), reported The Guardian.
However, experts have doubts about the law. Lisa Given, a professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, wrote in The Conversation that many European countries tried this before but failed. This is because social media is an important way for teenagers to get information. It also helps them share their thoughts. So it is not right to take this away from them.
On the technical (技术的) side, the law will also be difficult to carry out, said the regulator (监管机构) for online safety in the country. For example, many apps now ask users their age. But users can simply lie and put in an earlier date. What’s more, the law may push teenagers to hide their online activities, or even use apps that are unsafe or badly managed.
44.Will the new law start by the end of the year in Australia
45.Who is Anthony Albanese
46.According to The Guardian, what did the parents think of the social media
47.Do you agree with Lisa Given What do you think of the new law in Australia

Nowadays, there has always been a problem between young people and their parents. Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents, because they think their parents don’t understand them. They often say their parents are too strict with them, and their parents give them too many rules. Parents often find it difficult to get their children’s trust (信任). They seem to forget how they felt when they were young.
For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can deal with difficult things. Older people are different from them. They plan things ahead and don’t easily change their plans.
Young people often make their parents angry, but they don’t mean to cause any trouble. On one hand, the young want to keep themselves from the old people’s world. On the other hand, they want to make a new culture of their own. But if their parents don’t understand what they like, young people will feel lonely.
If you plan to do what you like, you’d better win your parents’ support and try to make them understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility (责任感), they will certainly give you the right (权利) to do what you want to do.
48.Do parents often find it difficult to get their children’s trust

Just the Way You Are
“I’m too short.” “I’m too thin.” “If only I had a small nose, I’d be happy”. Have you ever had similar thoughts Are you unhappy with the way you look If so, it’s quite common.
As a teenager, your body is going through many changes. It’s not always easy to like every part of your looks. Some people work hard to change their looks. Some even get hurt from having dangerous cosmetic surgeries. But everyone has things that they can’t change about themselves. What you need to do is to change the way you see yourselves.
Many teenagers believe that the looks of famous stars are the standard of beauty. They also often compare their looks with those of their classmates and friends. However, there is in fact no single standard of beauty. For example, people in the Tang Dynasty didn’t take “thin” as the standard of beauty. Another example, dark skin in pop culture is one of the standards of health and beauty in western countries, but it’s not the same in Asian countries.
Everyone can have a different understanding of beauty. Only one thing is for sure: You are your most beautiful self when you are confident. Humans are not perfect, but that’s what makes each of us special and lovely!

It’s important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners There is a good book, How to Behave and Why. It is written by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult. There are also pictures in it. They make the book easy to understand.
Also, you can teach your children in life. Before they’re going to school or a friend’s house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners anytime. And you can also have a manners competition. It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They shouldn’t be noisy in class. And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates, and “thank you” when they get help from others. When children are at table, good table manners are important, too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouth full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners are very helpful in children’s self-growth. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

Have you ever heard of Blue Letter Project The project was set up to help rural (农村的) middle school students aged 13 to 14. It offers them a chance to express themselves and know themselves better by writing letters to pen friends.
Lin Lusheng, a leader of the project, says that teenagers are facing challenges in their adolescence (青春期). They are under stress from school and experiencing changes in mind and body. Many teenagers don’t want to share their feelings with adults, such as parents and teachers. But if adults don’t pay enough attention to them, it may lead to serious problems.
According to him, 80 to 90 percent of the project’s volunteers are university students in their 20s. The rest are workers from companies. The volunteers need to pass the tests and receive professional training. Then they can have the skills to give support to rural teenagers.
For example, Ji Xiaoming is one of these volunteers. She has a 14-year-old pen friend named Cao Yajuan. Ji remembered that in Cao’s first letter, she mentioned her stress from schoolwork, asked about study methods (方法), and was curious (好奇的) about university life. Le’ Ann Solmonson, a counselor (咨询师) in Texas, has seen many families meet problems when children reach adolescence (青春期). The teenagers begin to think more differently than their parents and they want more independence so they began to push against their parents’ rules. To deal with the problem, the parents tighten (加紧) their control of their children or even punish them, which makes their children push back harder and break more rules, leading to more problems and disagreements.
In counseling, Solmonson often asks a teenager and his or her parents to talk about one of their disagreements. Usually, the parents will directly complain (抱怨) that their kid’s opinion is wrong. If this happens, Solmonson will remind them that she wants to hear what they think their child’s opinion is, not whether it’s right or wrong. She explains that the purpose is to develop understanding between them. When problems appear, she advises parents to use supportive and positive sentences like “I know how you feel about it. How can we stop that from happening again ”
Moreover, Solmonson reminds parents that if they want respect (尊重) from their child during disagreements, they’ll need to show it themselves. If a teenager answers impolitely, Solmonson tells parents to respond by saying, “I’m going to give you another chance. Do you need a minute to think about how to say that ”

Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays” This activity is for children to go to a lonely place to do some exciting things. Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children to do the outdoor activities without their parents.
The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to the nature is good for children. Many children in cities spend much time watching TV and playing computer games. This activity gives them an important chance to change.
Is it a wonderful idea Of course it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to learn to live on their own without adults staying with them. Chinese parents usually care too much about their children. They like to see their children being busy with activities which are controlled by them. But this will cause many problems. Children won’t be able to know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children may not be comfortable when they need to deal with problems alone. Even a little problem like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
Many people think the activity is good for children. Even years later, children will still remember what they have learned. Some may have learned to stay calm in dangerous situations. Some may have learned how to keep safe. Some may have learned how to work as a team. All these skills will help them a lot in the future.

We found that only fifteen percent of our students exercise every day. Forty-five percent exercise four to six times a week. Twenty percent exercise only one to three times a week. And twenty percent do not exercise at all!
We all know that many students often go online, but we were surprised that ninety percent of them use the Internet every day. The other ten percent use it at least three or four times a week. Most students use it for fun and not for homework.
The answers to our questions about watching television were also interesting. Only two percent of the students watch TV one to three times a week. Thirteen percent watch TV four to six times a week. And eighty-five percent watch TV every day! Although many students like to watch sports, game shows are the most popular.

True Beauty Lies in Purity of the Heart
FAIR SKIN, rosy cheeks and lips, pointed chin...Have you ever noticed these eye-catching facial features on some celebrities’ and even your friends’ faces online Well, that’s a new trend (趋势) called “extreme makeup (极端的化妆)”. Extreme makeup can surely help people get attention and bring them a sense of achievement. It’s thus not surprising that people would like to follow this trend and spend hours practicing their makeup skills. But is this trend really worth following
From my opinion, it’s a pure heart that is supposed to be loved, not an artificial appearance. A modified (改良的) face might be more “beautiful”, but it’s short of time, and is not the real you. A truly pure heart contains amount of love and knowledge, which will be with you forever. If we look back at those famous people throughout history who really made an effect, we’ll find they are not remembered for their fantastic appearance but, rather, for what they achieved and for their humanity.
As students, we must bear in mind that inner fullness and spiritual richness matter most. Don’t become addicted to changing your original appearance. Just be natural, innocent (天真无邪的) and simple. Find ways to improve your inner beauty, rather than what’s on the outside.
86.According to the text, what can extreme makeup help people do
87.What is the author’s opinion

A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for younger people. Puppy love (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression (忧郁症). The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.
The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self ” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won’t tell that to their parents.
Dr. Marianm Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.
Parents should watch for signs of depression, eating or mood changes, and if they see signs from their daughter or son, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity (成熟) gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.
