Nick Vujicic was born with no arms or legs, but he doesn’t let this stop him.
The brave 26-year-old man plays football and golf, and swims, in spite of the fact that he has no arms or legs.
Nick has a small foot on his left side, which helps him balance and makes him able to kick. He uses his one foot to type, write with a pen and pick things up.
“I call it my chicken drumstick,” joked Nick, who was born in Melbourne, Australia, but now lives in Los Angeles. “I’d be lost without it. When I get in the water I float because 80 percent of my body is lungs and my drumstick acts as a propeller.”
“He’s very modest, but he gets marriage proposals from women all the time,” said Nick’s friend Steve Appel. “He would love to get married and start a family, but he’s waiting for the right girl to come along.”
When Nick was born, his father was so shocked that he left the hospital room. His distraught mother couldn’t bring herself to hold him until he was four months old.
His disability came without any medical explanation, which was a rare case. Nick and his parents spent many years asking why this cruel trick would happen to them.
“My mother was a nurse and she did everything right during pregnancy but she still blamed herself,” he said.
“It was so hard for them, but right from the start they did their best to make me independent. My dad put me in the water at 18 months and gave me the courage to learn how to swim.”
24. We can learn from the text that Nick ________.
A. has a poor sense of balance B. understands his mother very well
C. considers his small foot ugly D. is disappointed with his health condition
25. What can we learn from what Steve Appel said
A. Nick Vujicic is serious about his marriage. B. Nick Vujicic is not popular with women.
C. Nick Vujicic is afraid of starting a family. D. Nick Vujicic is not willing to get married.
26. The underlined word “distraught” in the text probably means ________.
A. cold-blooded B. bad-tempered C. really shy D. extremely upset
27. Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Nick’s parents couldn’t afford the hospital bill.
B. Nick is living in Melbourne, Australia now.
C. Nick’s father was to blame for his disability.
D. Nick learned to be independent at a young age.
C
Have you ever been to the beach Did you see a man with a headset pointing a long stick at the ground If so you might have seen a person using a metal detector. People use these tools to find metal.
Metal detectors make magnetic waves. These waves go through the ground. The waves change when they hit metal. Then the tool makes a short high sound. This lets the person with the tool know that metal is close.
The first metal detectors were meant to help miners to dig out minerals such as coal and gold from the earth. They were big and cost a lot of money. They used a lot of power. And worst of all, they didn't work well. People kept trying to make them better.
Metal detectors got smaller. Now they are light and cheap. They also work better. That why people bring them to the beach. They can look for rings in the water or phone in the sand. Metal detectors help them find these things.
Metal detectors also protect people. They help to keep guns out of some places. Guards use special thin sticks to look for knives, guns or metal on a person.
These tools save lives in other ways too. During wars, soldiers plant bombs in the ground, When the war ends, they don't clean them up. This is unsafe for the people who live in those places. So they use metal detectors to find bombs and remove them.
These tools also make clothes safer. I sounds funny, but it's true. Most clothes are made in big factories. Needles are easy to break and get sick in the clothes. They would hurt people. So our clothes are examined carefully by metal detectors.
Let's hear it for metal detectors. They make the world a safe place.
28. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A. How metal detectors work. B. Why magnetic waves change.
C. The danger of metal detectors. D. The sounds of a metal detector.
29. What were the first metal detectors used for
A. Removing bombs. B. Finding needles in the clothes.
C. Looking for minerals. D. Searching for dangerous things.
30. According to the passage, metal detectors can make people feel ______.
A. nervous B. special C. safe D. healthy
31. What is the best title for the passage
A. Inventor of a Useful Tool B. Usage of Metal Detectors
C. Finding Underground Metals D. Changes of Magnetic Waves

Though shark attacks can be a rare occurrence, there have been 46 publicly reported shark attacks so far this year. Then why do sharks attack humans Here's everything we know.
Shark attacks are often put into different categories: provoked (被挑衅) and unprovoked. “Unprovoked bites” are defined as incidents in which a bite on a human occurs in the shark's natural habitat with no human provocation of the shark. “Provoked bites” occur when a human starts interacting with a shark in some way. For instance, when divers are bitten after attacking or trying to touch sharks.
Roger Tabor, a biologist and naturalist, says, “There is no evidence that sharks specifically hunt people.” Nowadays, a theory called the Mistaken Identity Hypothesis (假说) explains shark bites on surfers, swimmers and divers as “mistakes,” which typically means that sharks might confuse humans with their typical prey (猎物). Mr. Tabor says surfing has previously been linked to shark attacks because the sudden movement, similar to an animal suddenly moving back, or bright parts of wetsuits reflecting looking like a fish, can cause a response in the visually oriented (导向的) great white".
In a paper published by Eric Clua, a marine biologist and Carl Meyer, a biologist at the University of Hawaii, in the Brill Journal, they look at the MIH theory. The paper says that although MlH may now be “widely” accepted by the general public and the scientific community, there are still some unknown gaps. “This hypothesis ignores the important role of other senses (e.g. hearing) in discriminating potential prey,” the paper says. The authors also note that shark bites which occur in clear water cannot always be explained by MIH. It adds," To put it simply, sharks don't make ‘mistakes’ but instead continually explore their environments and routinely investigate novel objects as potential prey by biting them.”
Climate change may be another reason for seeing an increase in shark attacks. Mr. Tabor says," Global warming and habitat damage can move marine species including seals and sharks. That can bring larger sharks more into contact with beaches, with people.”
32. What can we learn about sharks from paragraph 2
A. They tend to bite humans purposely.
B. They are frequently targeted at divers.
C. They are potentially risky to interact with.
D. They don't attack people unless disturbed.
33. Why do sharks attack people according to Mr. Tabor
A. Bright wetsuits damage sharks' vision.
B. Sharks have quite a poor sense of sight.
C. Sharks merely take people for their prey.
D. Global warming results in their violence.
34. What is Eric Clua and Carl Meyer’ attitude toward the MIH theory
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Carefree. D. Tolerant.
35. What do the authors think accounts for sharks' bites on people
A. Desire to seek new food sources.
B. Lack of underwater creatures as prey.
C. Constant transformation of the environment.
D Incompetence of distinguishing novel objects.

The hot sun on your skin, sweat going into your eyes — anyone who has played a sport in the middle of summer knows it’s not easy. And some people even think adding heat is a good way to get a better workout — like in hot yoga or hot Pilates, which are done in rooms as hot as 38 degrees Celsius. ____36____
The answer isn’t as simple as a yes or no. There may be some benefits of exercising in high temperatures. It is believed that these works warm the muscles, which can help you avoid injuries. ____37____ This is because they make your heart work a bit harder.
But before you turn the heat up, it’s not all good news. For one thing, your body might not be able to work as hard in high heat as it can in cooler temperatures, meaning your workout won't be as good as you might like.
____38____ Because the body sweats more, it's easy to get dehydrated (脱水). Sweating also means losing important salts, so you may feel tightening and discomfort in your muscles or stomach.
____39____ It is a dangerous state of extreme overheating which happens when your body gets too hot and its temperature goes over degrees Celsius. This situation of high body temperature, like heatstroke (中暑), can cause serious damage to different parts of your body, like your brain, heart, liver and kidneys and in extreme cases, even death.
If you do want to try heated exercise, there are ways to make it safer. Drinking lots of water helps stop you from getting dehydrated. ____40____ 40 And try to wear light clothes — and take breaks when you need to!
A. But are high-temperature workouts really better
B. The biggest risk of exercising in heat is heatstroke.
C. But why do people like high-temperature workouts
D. Heated works may also help you burn more calories.
E. This is why many people prefer to exercise in the cool evening.
F. There are also health risks related to exercising in high temperatures.
G. Sports drinks will replace any of those important salts you lose from sweat too.

David loved writing. When the school announced an English writing competition, David was eager to participate. He worked hard on his entry, believing it was his chance to prove himself. However, when the results were announced, David’s name wasn’t there. He felt a deep sense of disappointment and frustration, as if all his hard work had been in vain.
After the competition, David felt too embarrassed to talk about his failure. He spent days in his room, avoiding everyone. His former imagination seemed to have dried up, and he couldn’t find the motivation to write anymore. It felt like a part of him had been destroyed.
One afternoon, as David sat in his room, his English teacher, Mr. Carter, came to visit. Mr. Carter was a kind and encouraging teacher who had always believed in David s potential. He had noticed David’s absence in class and decided to check in on him.
“Hey, David,” Mr. Carter said gently. “I heard about the competition. I’m really sorry you didn’t win, but I know how much effort you put into it. You should be proud of yourself for trying.” David looked down, feeling defeated. “I just don’t get it, Mr. Carter,” he said quietly. “I worked so hard, but it wasn’t enough. I feel like I’m never going to be good enough.”
Mr. Carter sat down next to David and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder., He said, “David, writing is not just about winning competitions. It’s about expressing yourself and sharing your ideas. Sometimes, even the best writers don’t win. But that doesn’t mean they’re not good. It just means they need to keep trying and learning.”
With Mr. Carter’s encouragement, David began to analyze his writing. They discussed the strengths and weaknesses of his entry, and Mr. Carter offered valuable suggestions. David started to feel more confident and motivated. He realized that failure was just a part of the learning process.

Should Students Use AI Learning Apps
With an increasing emerge of AI tools in our life, more and more students are turning to such learning tools for study.
It’s true that they can be valuable in that we can use it to get some ideas or explanations when stuck by some hard problems. However, over-reliance on such apps may weaken our independent thinking ability. Besides, not all of the information provided is accurate. Therefore, to employ learning apps in a wise way, students should be cautious, not fully depending on them to do homework or just copying the answers without thinking.
In conclusion, learning apps are helpful assistants, but self-discipline is key. Let’s use technology wisely to empower our studies instead of being controlled by it.

【答案】
Over the next few weeks, David threw himself back into his writing. He practiced every day, incorporating Mr. Carter’s advice. He wrote essays, short stories, and even poetry, constantly pushing himself to improve. Slowly but surely, his confidence grew, and he began to enjoy writing again. He found that the more he wrote, the more ideas flowed through his mind. Each word he put on paper felt like a small victory, and he started to see his writing in a new light. He realized that the joy of writing wasn’t just in winning competitions, but in the process of creation itself.
The next school year brought another writing competition. This time, David was determined to give it his best shot. He submitted an essay that he had worked on for weeks, feeling more prepared and hopeful than ever before. When the results were announced, David’s heart raced with anticipation. To his delight, his name was called as one of the winners. He couldn’t believe it — he had done it! All the hard work and perseverance had paid off. David knew that this victory was not just his own; it was evidence for the power of believing in oneself and never giving up.
