Special Care Brings Special Bond
On March 12, 2010, I was told that I had a new baby brother. A week later my mom told me that the hospital check-up results were not good. My brother had 56 problems.
We went to a famous vision center several times, but the 57 didn’t work, so my family began learning braille (盲文). I should correct myself when I say “my family”, because I didn’t want to sit down every night and learn symbol after symbol. I just did my own things. My parents spent hours with my brother 58 him and themselves by playing braille games.
Years passed. The summer before ninth grade, as my parents had to go on business trips, it was up to me to take care of my brother. This meant sending him to summer camp in the morning, making meals for him and playing with him.
One day my father asked me to read a braille note, and I failed. My dad’s eyes were almost filled with tears. He was so 59 that I didn’t care enough about my brother. This 60 me, realizing how selfish I had been. I wanted to talk to him, but I couldn’t even read 61 phrases like: “Are you hungry ” “Do you want to play ” “Where do you want to go ” and other questions I wanted to ask but didn’t know how.
My family and I started taking braille classes at my brother’s school. We sat together as a family watching braille teaching videos and playing braille games.
Today I can 62 very well with my brother. It makes me smile when my brother shows me a braille message about his day, and others can’t understand it. I realized it was no fun not knowing what my family was talking about.
So if you have a family member with special needs, don’t keep him or her at a distance. This person should be the most important in your heart. For me, braille now comes before games, friends and hobbies, because it is the 63 of my family.

One day my mother saw an ad for a race in a newspaper. “Would you be interested in this race ” she asked me, pointing to the ad. “Yes, of course,” I answered. So I practiced for my big 65 .
On the day of the race, just 66 the race, my father said to me, “Don’t use up all your energy at the beginning of the race. You need to have energy and then you can run much faster at the end.”
The race began. Following dad’s words, I didn’t run as fast as I could. Then the other runners started passing me, which made me feel tired. And I started slowing down and breathing harder. Just at that moment I heard, “ 67 , Kelly, you can do it. Don’t give up. Keep running.” Out of the corner of my eyes I saw dad 68 beside me around the outside of the track. I took a deep breath and 69 my best to go on running.
I didn’t win the race. I came fifth. 70 I had done my best, and I hadn’t given up.
Later, as I thought about the race, I felt thankful that my dad 71 left my side. He always encourages me when I 72 giving up. He runs beside me through my life. I’ll 73 my dad’s words forever, “Never give up. You can be a winner, even if you lose.”

“BANG!” the door closed heavily. My father was standing on one side and I on the other side.
We were 102 in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” my father shouted. With tears, I rushed out and ran along the street.
I walked around and around. A young father who held a child in his arms walked 103 me. I felt as if I saw my childhood—happy and peaceful.
But now... I don’t know 104 it is because I have grown up or because my dad is getting old. We have different thoughts. Whenever I do something wrong, he never accepts it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door 105 us that can never be opened.
My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were 106 people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to be with me. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw the light was still on.

Hey, I’ll tell you a bad-news story. My name is Mike Hankins. The first eight years of my life were 142 —until my parents told me some bad news.
Let me tell you about my perfectly normal day first. Every morning, my mom wakes me up. When I go downstairs, the unmistakable 143 reaches my nose, making my mouth water. Dad makes delicious food. During the drive to school, we sing along 144 to my favorite music without restraints (约束). After school, Dad and I play football together. Then we eat and tell each other stories about our day.
Well, it’s about time I tell you about the bad news. It’s 145 . A few months ago, my parents told me that I was going to have a little sister soon. I told Mom that I didn’t want a baby sister. But it didn’t 146 . My parents believed that I would get used to it and I might even like the 147 . But I doubted.
Now can you see why I’m so sad This is going to 148 everything! For eight years, I have been the center of the attention. The worst thing is that my bedroom won’t be mine anymore. My baby sister will 149 it with me.
Today, Mom and Dad are coming home from the hospital with my new sister. I will just tell them to return her again.
Well, here they are. Dad is carrying a pink blanket (毯子). Is the baby inside there Before I say anything, Dad is putting the baby in my arms. And then the most 150 thing happens. My baby sister catches my finger tightly, and she won’t let it go! I think she 151 that I am her big brother, and she likes me already. Maybe having a little sister won’t be so bad.

In my childhood, my mother used to do something for someone else in the evening. Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t 152 when one evening my mother announced she had taken on a new project.
“I am going to telephone seniors (老年人),” said my mother. “Every 153 But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What matters is that I 154 .” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to talk to 155 all night. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch their 156 ,” I said.
My attitude (态度) didn’t stop my mother’s love for the project. That evening, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “ 157 do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert ” My mother said, “I’m the 158 person she talked to today.”
It took me more than thirty years to 159 understand the meaning of my mother’s words. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly 160 she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole food from the refrigerator. I 161 that my mother’s calls were lifelines, which made sure housebound seniors could keep in touch with the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.
