The Day I Got My Dog
By Natasha, age 12
I’ve loved animals since I was a little girl, but my parents work all day and I’m at school until 5 p.m. This is why every time I asked to get a pet, they said no. Things changed on a rainy day last March.
I was coming back from school with my best friend Diana when we saw something moving in a rubbish bin (垃圾箱). There was a black bag inside and when she took it out and opened it, I saw a little dog. I think it was less than a month old because some of its teeth were still missing. The dog looked sad and hungry, so I took it home. While I was waiting for my parents to get back, I gave the dog some meat and water. The dog drank the whole bowl of water but it didn’t eat anything, then it lay down on the carpet (地毯) in the living room and slept.
When my parents got home, they were surprised. My father sat down on the sofa and the dog jumped on his legs. He touched its head and smiled. My mother went into the kitchen and came back with some meat. This time the dog ate it. Then she asked me to choose a name for it. She also said that if I wanted to keep the dog, I would have to look after it every day, because both my parents were busy at work until the evening. We have had Leela for 4 years now. She’s part of my family and we all love her.

Dear Erik,
Surprise! I believe you didn’t expect a note from your mom in your lunchbox! How is your school day so far I hope it is going well. You always do your best. I am proud of you! Because I had to leave so early this morning, I wrote this note last night and put it into your lunchbox to wish you well on your speech today. With all of your amazing research, writing, and practice, you are going to do great!
I know that you get a little nervous talking in front of large groups—everybody does. But, just remember what you practiced and you just might forget about being nervous.

Well, that’s all for now. I am thinking of you today and I know you will do great. Do your best and be brave like George Washington. He was an excellent choice for your speech.

Talk to your family.
Start by asking family members if you can speak with them about your family history. 19 You can also ask them about big world events or inventions in their lifetime. While talking, you can write something down. That would help you know them well.
Look at old photos together.
Old photos can open memories and conversations. 20 Look at them together, and ask them to share what they remember about the photo, such as what the activity was and who was there.
Build a big family tree.
21 At the bottom (底部) of the tree will be you and any brother or sister. Above you will be your parents, and above them, their parents. See how far back you can go in your family tree, listing your great-or even great-great-grandparents. Add aunts and uncles and their children as well.
22
You can make a memory box or a book that includes photos of your family, your family tree, and what you’ve learned about your family history. Later, you can look back on the history you’ve collected and save it for your children or grandchildren to enjoy.
A.Treasure your memories.
B.Make meals for your family.
C.Ask family members if they have any old photos.
D.You can ask questions about their life growing up.

Growing up, Nana would make us an Italian dinner every Sunday. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce for hours. It always left our bellies (肚子) full, our hearts happy, and our house smelling yummy.
I sat down when Dad made me a plate. I felt like a boy again. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories, both good and bad. And I noticed something too. I didn’t feel cold anymore. My heart was warm, and my spirit was light.
Dad and Nana have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every day. Although my daughter and I both know how to make Nana’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we should. No matter how hard I try, I can never get it quite right. Maybe I am missing an ingredient. Or maybe it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. The oldest child syndrome (综合征), sometimes called the firstborn syndrome, is about how being the first child in a family can form a person’s character. Birth order has long been thought of as a main reason that influences (影响) how children grow and change.
Being the first child can sometimes be hard. “The oldest child syndrome is when the first child feels they must do well and be a good example for other children in the family,” says Nicholette Leanza, a therapist (治疗专家).
According to Brandy Smith, a psychologist, some common behaviors for the first child include:
●Having a strong sense of responsibility
● Feeling they must meet people’s expectations, mainly their parents’ expectations
● Often drawn to leadership-type roles
● Usually described as someone who follows rules and acts nicely
●Being a hard-working person who always tries his best to succeed
There are also some advantages of being the oldest child in the family. Studies have shown that firstborn children have an advantage when it comes to learning things around the age of four. Some studies show that firstborn children also have a small advantage when it comes to early reading and writing skills.
“Being the oldest child can also influence how a child grows in feelings and their understanding of who they are,” Leanza says. “For example, they might grow up quicker because they have more jobs to do at home or they might act more like parents because they have to look after their younger brothers and sisters.”
“These can make it hard for the oldest child to find their identity (身份) outside of their role in their family,” Leanza explains. “It’s important for kids to learn to be themselves. And they shouldn’t just see themselves as part of the family.”
47.What is the “oldest child syndrome” mainly about
A.How firstborn children are different from others.
B.Why firstborn children have more responsibility.
C.Why firstborn children are usually more successful.

A.They are better at sports. B.They get better grades in school.
C.They are more popular at school. D.They learn things better at an early age
50.Why does Leanza say the oldest child might have trouble finding their identity
A.Because they are always told what to do.
B.Because they are always trying to be perfect.
C.Because they have many home responsibilities.
D.Because they are often compared to their brothers and sisters
51.What’s the best title of the passage
A.Tips for firstborn children B.Being the oldest: good and bad
C.The firstborn child’s advantages D.Growing up fast: the firstborn child’s journey

On a cold evening in January, little Philip went upstairs and found the door closed. Outside the door of his mother’s bedroom, he stopped and listened. Although no one told him not to go in, he had a feeling that it would be wrong to do so. He was a little afraid with his heart beating fast, but at the same time, something told him to open the door. He opened it quietly and slowly. He stood for some time before going in. He was not afraid now, but he felt strange (奇怪的). Then, the little boy closed the door behind him.
________ Looking around it, the little boy went into the room gently and slowly. On the dressing table, Philip saw Mrs. Carey’s brushes and the hand mirror. There was a photo of him and also a photo of his father on the wall. He had often been in the room when his mother was not in it, but now it seemed different. There was something different in the chairs. The bed was made just like someone would sleep in it that night.
Philip opened a large cupboard (壁柜) full of dresses and then he went in. He took as many of them as he could in his arms and put his face in them. Then he opened the drawers (抽屉) filled with his mother’s things, and looked at them. Their smell was fresh and warm. The difference of the room left it, and it seemed to him that his mother had just gone out for a walk. She would be in any minute and would come upstairs to have a small cup of tea with him. And it seemed that he felt her kiss on his face. He just couldn’t believe it! He kept telling himself it was not true that he would never see her again. Finally, he climbed up on the bed and put his head on the pillow (枕头). He lay there warmly and quietly, full of sadness.

Maggie and Samantha are twin sisters. Sometimes many students have a hard time telling which is which. They have blonde hair, just like their dad does. They have green eyes, just like their mum does. They are around the same height too.
Every workday morning they take the yellow school bus and sit together. They have a lot in common. Both girls enjoy the same TV shows. Both girls spend a lot of time together with their family, and they both like to play with their dog, Callie.
But they are also very different. Maggie likes to play sports. Every Wednesday and Friday afternoon, she goes to the football club. Samantha doesn’t really like sports, but she likes to dance. When Maggie practises football in the club, she goes to the dancing lessons.
Maggie likes to read history books, but Samantha likes books about animals. Maggie gets better grades in reading and Spanish, while Samantha gets better grades in maths and science.

The Sound of Home
The moment I stepped into Grandma’s house last winter, a familiar scent of cinnamon cookies wrapped around me like a warm hug. “Can you describe how the train journey was ” Grandma asked, her eyes crinkling. Before I could answer, she gasped—her antique pocket watch, a family treasure for 60 years, was missing!
Panic flashed across her face. Mom immediately called a family meeting. “Can anyone remember where Grandma last had it ” she asked. Uncle Jack checked the garden, Aunt Lisa searched the kitchen, while my younger cousin Emma and I scanned the living room. The watch’s soft ticking was the heartbeat of this house; its absence made everything feel wrong.
Suddenly, Emma tugged my sleeve. “Can you hear that ” she whispered. Faint ticking came from behind the sofa cushions. We dug through them frantically until silver gleamed in my palm. As I placed the watch in Grandma’s trembling hands, pure joy lit up her face. She pulled us all into a group hug, her tears dampening my hair.
That tiny watch taught me what home truly means. Can a building be just bricks and windows Never. Home is where familiar smells welcome you, where people say “Can I help ” before you even ask. It’s the joy of knowing someone will always search through sofa cushions with you. Can any feeling compare to that I don’t think so.

When I was a boy, my family would sometimes get together at my great aunt’s tiny house over the summer. Relatives from all over the country would come to visit. The adults would get together in the living room, around the kitchen table and on the front porch (门廊) to talk and catch up on each other’s lives. All of the kids would be sent out in the front yard to play.
Those were the days before video games and smartphones appeared, so we often ended up playing a good old-fashioned game of tag (捉人游戏). I remember one of those times especially. I was the youngest and smallest of all the kids there, so I got caught first and couldn’t catch anyone else.
Although I tried my best to chase after my brothers and cousins, they were all too fast for me. I grew sadder and sadder. I finally lunged at (扑向) one of my brothers and fell my face first into the dirt. I got up with tears in my eyes.
Then I saw one of my cousins standing there. She started to run but was going much slower than before. I easily caught up with her. Then she turned to me, smiled and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing happily while she turned and started to chase one of my older brothers.
I see now how her act of kindness that day saved me from sadness and brought me joy. It didn’t matter that we hardly ever saw each other. We are family and she loves me. We are all one. We all belong to each other and we are one big, beautiful family.

I stood there listening to my father shout at the top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had done something wrong.
“Which one of you did this ”
We all looked down at the step. There was a child’s handwriting in chalk (粉笔) there. I was very frightened. Would he guess it was me I was so scared. When he asked me, I lied, “Not me, Dad.” The others denied (否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us must have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth.
To find out who had written on the step, Dad gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the step.” I tried my best to write the words differently. I didn’t want Dad to be able to tell it was me.
He looked at our pieces of paper. “Since none of you will say yes, then I will punish you all.” I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish me! “I did it,” my sister walked forward and said she had done something she hadn’t. She was grounded (禁足) for a month.
We didn’t talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older did I know it was safe to finally tell my dad it was really me. I always felt sorry because of it. That was the last time I let anyone else take the blame (责备) for me.
