Have you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is to book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru (秘鲁).
Rainbow Mountain is a beautiful natural wonder. It lies in the Andes in Cusco (库斯科的安第斯山脉). As its name suggests, the mountain has different colours.
But why is it in yellow, green, red and purple The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt (融化), the water mixed with the minerals (矿物质) in the ground and turned the earth into many colours.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing more difficult and the colours will look less beautiful. The best time is from March to November, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or evening, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny days may make you not take nice photos.
To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco—a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three-hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but the trip is very difficult. Because the mountain sits at a very high altitude (海拔) about 5,200 meters above the sea level, so bring enough water and take your time.

Probably you have seen the photos of the Grand Canyon (大峡谷). But you must go there yourself to feel its size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
11 Slowly, the river cut down through hard rocks. At the same time, the land was rising. Today the canyon is 1.5 kilometers deep and 445 kilometers long. It’s also very wide, about 20 kilometers. As a result, 12
The canyon looks different at different times of the day, and in different seasons and weather. 13 In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow.
The view from the South Rim (南壁) of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come here and stay in campgrounds or hotels. 14
The North Rim of the canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim, 15 On the way, you go through Navaho Indian Land, and a colourful pink desert called “The Painted Desert”.

There are far too many mysteries in this world that we have yet to discover. Some of them are hidden in the most unlikely places. 16
In a small town of Gryfino in Poland lies one of the world’s mysteries that have been known—a small group of pine trees. 17 From the bottom, these trees grow with a 90-degree bend northwards, but then go back to grow straight up into the sky.
According to the scientists, the pine trees there were planted around 1930. Though they are strange in shape, these trees are generally healthy. 18 Some even grow nearly 15.24 meters. That’s about the height of a five-story building.
19 Some suppose that the special gravity (重力) in this area has caused the trees to bend northwards. But it seems that this guess isn’t proper, because gravity only pulls things downwards and doesn’t make them bend. Others guess that the heavy snowfall in the area weighed down the trees as they were small. However, if that is the case, how would they explain that the other trees are the same in this area
The most possible explanation is that local farmers shaped the trees when planting them then. During those times, it was common for farmers to shape their plants for special purposes. 20 The secret behind the tree is still waiting for us to discover.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺,内容完整。
A.Most of them are very tall.
B.These trees look strange in shape.
C.Others remain unsolved even up to this day.
D.However, that is only one of the guesses from people.
E.There are many guesses at the mystery in the forest.

Guided by her, the young scientist finally found the river himself, and confirmed that its water did reach boiling temperatures.
“Dipping my hand into the river would give me third-degree burns in less than half a second. Falling in could easily kill me,” he wrote in his book The Boiling River: Adventure and Discovery in the Amazon. Ruzo said, “What was amazing is that the local people always knew about this place. It is just a part of their everyday life. They cook with it, clean with it, and even make their medicines with it. ”
But so far, no one has been able to explain the secret of the boiling water. “It reminds us that there are still great wonders to be discovered, ”Ruzo said, “The biggest part of the Boiling River area is still original (原始的) and untamed—and I hope to keep it this way. ”

In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南极洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (恶劣的) place on the Earth.
As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather.
Sleep is also difficult. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七级以上的) winds. They can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.

Police in America have stepped up their search for a fifteen-year-old boy who went missing three days ago in Dover, New Hampshire. This case has received great interest because it is said that aliens visited when the boy disappeared.
Justin Foster, a high school student, was last seen on Friday night. That evening at 8 p.m., Justin’s friends called him to play baseball. Witnesses (目击者) say they saw Justin walking towards his house at 10: 45 p.m. Justin’s sister, Kelly, says she heard her brother return home at about 11 p.m., but she didn’t see him with her own eyes.
“I was on bed at that time. Suddenly I was woken up at midnight by a bright light outside my window.” Kelly said.
“I pulled back the curtains(窗帘) and saw a large spaceship flying outside. It had blue lights all around it. Standing inside were lots of aliens. I was frightened!”
Kelly said that the spaceship then moved towards her brother’s bedroom. “There was a flash of light and I heard Justin shout, and then the UFO just disappeared. I’m sure the aliens took him away.”
Kelly then ran and woke up her mother. However, Mrs. Foster thought that Kelly was having a bad dream, so she sent her back to bed. Mr. Foster was not home that night. When Justin did not show up for lunch the next day, Mrs. Foster became worried and told her husband to call the police.
Some people in Dover also say that they saw aliens that night. “It’s happened to me!” said Mrs. Smith. “The aliens took me aboard the UFO for research. Luckily, they sent me home without any injuries. The whole experience was terrible! I haven’t been sleeping well since I returned home. I think Justin was taken away by them, too.”
When asked about whether Justin was taken by aliens, Detective Peterson, who has taken charge of the case, told reporters, “Sometimes people make up stories. There’s really no hard proof(证据) that aliens took him. So we are looking into other possibilities as well. We will not give up until we find out what happened.”

Have you ever heard of the Eternal Flame Falls (永恒火焰瀑布) It’s one of the most special waterfalls on our planet.
The waterfall is in a park in western New York, the USA.As we come close to it, we will smell something like bad eggs. That’s the smell of natural methane gas (沼气) produced by ancient rocks that are awfully hot. At the heart of the waterfall is a small flame.
The burning flame has been there for a long time. The locals believe it was created by elves (精灵). According to them, we may come across one while looking at the flame if we are lucky enough.
Another popular idea about the flame is that it’s alive because of the natural gas. It is widely believed that it was first set on fire a hundred years ago. Although the flame once went out, it was lit again right away.
However, Indiana University researchers think differently. The temperature of the flame is much higher than the boiling point of water, but their study shows that those rocks are not hot enough to lead to such a result. This means something else keeps the flame alive. However, the researchers are unable to discover the real reason behind it.
Arndt Schimmelmann from the university further explains that this special place has a different way to produce gas. “If there is another way of producing gas, there might be more gas sources (来源) than expected,’ he adds.

In 1924, Frederick Mitchell-Hedges led a team to Lubaantun, an ancient Mayan (玛雅人的) city in modern-day Belize, a country in Central America. There, his daughter, Anna, found one of the most mysterious objects in history: a crystal skull (水晶头骨) that looked like a perfect human head. After that, more crystal skulls appeared in a short period across Europe and North America.
For years, those mysterious crystal skulls have caused a lot of discussion. Even now, no one knows exactly who made them, and no one can say when.
Some people believe the Mesoamerican (中美洲的) people made the skulls thousands of years ago. Some stories say they have special powers (能力), such as the ability to make sick people well. Moviemakers love these stories. In the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the skulls had great powers. In the movie, a crystal skull is actually the head of an alien.
However, most scientists don’t believe these stories. They think the skulls are more modern. Scientists have found marks on the skulls that they believe only more modern technology could make. Because of this, scientists are certain the skulls are not thousands of years old. Instead, they think the skulls are from the 19th century. Scientists also point to the British Museum’s research—researchers have found many Mesoamerican objects, but they have never found a crystal skull. Scientists say this is also evidence to show they are not really Mesoamerican.

When you look up into the sky at night, have you ever felt that your eyes are deceiving you It seems that stars are moving all the time.
Actually, there’s nothing wrong with your eyes. This twinkle (闪烁的) effect is called scintillation (闪烁现象). Scintillation happens because of air movement in the earth’s atmosphere (大气). Light is “bent (弯曲)” when it travels through different parts of the earth atmosphere. As the air in the earth’s atmosphere is moving all the time, the light traveling through the atmosphere makes the stars look as if they are moving, too.
The same thing also happens to things on the ground. On a very hot and shiny day, if you look at the road, you will see that the image (影像) in the distance is not clear and things move slightly. You can also see the same effect if you drop a rock into water. The rock appears a little unclear under the moving water.
This twinkling effect causes a lot of problems for astronomers (天文学家), because they cannot observe the stars clearly. So, a telescope was needed in space so that the air movements in the atmosphere could be avoided. It took a long time to build the space telescope but finally in 1990, a huge space telescope called the Hubble Space Telescope was successfully sent into space. Since then, astronomers have made many important observations that have helped people understand space better.
74.The underline word “deceiving” in Paragraph 1 means ________.
A.欺骗 B.帮助 C.嘲笑 D.闪烁
75.What can we learn from the second paragraph
A.How scintillation does harm to our eyes
B.How scintillation happens in the atmosphere

D.Why the atmosphere air is moving all the time
76.When a rock is dropped into the moving water, it appears a little unclear. Why
A.Because the water is too light to lift the rock up.
B.Because the light is “bent” when traveling through the water.
C.Because the water becomes dirty when the light travels through it.
D.Because the rock becomes dirty when the light travels through the water.

There are many islands in the sea. In its warm waters there are some little ones. We call them “coral islands(珊瑚岛)”.
A coral island looks like a ring of land(一圈陆地)with trees, grass, and flowers on it. One part of the ring is open to the water. There is a little round lake inside the island.
If you look into this lake, you will see beautiful coral. You may think they are flowers. If you look at a piece of coral, you will see many little holes in it. In each of these holes a very small sea animal has lived. These sea animals make the coral.
They began to build under the water. Year after year, the coral grew higher and higher. At last it grew out of the water.
Then the sea brought it small trees and something else. After some years, these things changed into earth. Sometimes the wind brought seeds (种子) to this earth. Sometimes birds flew over it and brought seeds to the island.
The little seeds grew. In a few years there were plants all over the island. In a few more years there were trees growing there.
So you see, these islands were built little by little. The workers were very small. Do they not teach us a lesson Can you think what the lesson is

David Miles, an Australian inventor has been arrested because of cheating farmers. He charged the farmers up to $50, 000 Australian dollars for delivering rain on demand.
On the Miles Research website, Miles explains that he can influence weather by creating a bridge between the “present” and a “near-future event”. By applying small amounts of energy, he can change the future weather system.
Miles does not explain in detail how he is able to bring rainfall to the lands of farmers. He makes references to famous concepts like “the butterfly effect”. “We were advised not to show how it works. There are a lot of big companies that are trying to steal our secret. The only way is to fully prove our science and physics. “
Miles’ claims raised public suspicion for obvious reasons. A statement on his company website says that his technology uses “electromagnetic scalar waves”, which, according to scientists, doesn’t even exist. Therefore, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned people against doing business with him. But Miles claimed that the ACCC was only trying to harm the fame of his company. If it didn’t rain, he wouldn’t get paid.
“Consumers signed the agreement with my company. If by the end of June they receive 100mm of rain, they will pay $50, 000. If they only receive 50mm, they will only pay $25, 000. Anything under half of that, we don’t want to be paid, “ Miles said a handful of farmers agreed to take his offer to deliver rain.
Believe it or not, one of the farmers who paid David Miles for his so-called rain-making service said that he was quite happy with the results.
84.According to David Miles, what does his business do
A.To reduce the temperature. B.To change the solar energy.
C.To predict the future events. D.To influence the weather system.
85.Why did ACCC warn people against doing business with Miles
A.Because he charged too much for the services.
B.Because his practice will do harm to national safety.
C.Because he didn’t report his technology with ACCC.
D.Because his ‘‘electromagnetic scalar waves” doesn’t exist.
86.Which word is similar to the underlined word in meaning
A.Dishonesty. B.Doubt. C.Crime. D.Superpower.
87.How much will be paid to Miles if the farmers receive 15mm of rain
A.$0. B.$12, 500. C.$25, 000. D.$50, 000.
88.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Miles needed safer facilities for his business.
B.Miles brought about good crops as expected.
C.Miles has successfully attracted some farmers.
D.Miles was supported by official organizations.
Is there anything strange high up in the world’s tallest mountains If so, is it a big bear Is it a monkey Or is it a kind of man
No one knows. This mystery has puzzled people around the world for years. In 1887, a mountain climber found large footprints in the snow when he was climbing the Himalayas. They looked like the footprints of a huge man. But men don’t walk without shoes in the snow. People wondered at the large footprints and guessed what they were from.
In 1906, another climber saw more footprints. And they were printed on the mountainside where men couldn’t reach. Far off, he saw a very large animal standing on two legs. As he watched, it ran away very quickly.
Fifteen years later, newspapers had new stories about the “something” in the Himalayas. A mountain climber said he had seen the “snowman” walk slowly across the snow, far below him. He said it looked like a very large man.
From then on, more and more people had stories to tell. But not until 1951 did a mountain climber bring back pictures of the large footprints. The pictures showed clearly that the Snowman walked on two legs. So it was not a bear or a monkey. Could it be an ape(猿)man
