Dale Bolton was driving to his home in Toronto when he heard the statistic that changed his life.He was listening to a speech that said there were over 34 million orphans in Africa.“I almost ran into a tree,” says Bolton.“The number was surprising.” He couldn’t stop thinking about it.
That statistic on a journey led the Boltons to create an organization Thrive for Good, a not-for-profit that gives communities the resources and knowledge to help grow their own crops.The couple raised money for funding orphanages and digging wells.However, as Bolton spent more time on that, he learnt that the agricultural yields on the continent were significantly lower than in other parts of the world, and came to believe that the problem was the way commercial agriculture had been introduced.
Bolton and his wife Linda decided to start small: by funding and training people to grow modest organic gardens.Bolton started an organic farming course in Kenya.There, he met Mootlan, a farmer’s son, who also believed in the power of small-scale, organic farming.Together they travelled around to help communities start what they came to call a “life garden”. Locals didn’t think it could be done at first, Mootlan remembers.“But once they started tasting the food, they were like ‘Wow’.”
After that first project, things moved quickly.“When we helped one village, three more villages asked for help,” says Bolton.Today, Thrive for Good has 80 employees, and it has helped more than 1,000 communities create healthy meals for almost 30,000 people.Since 2012, they’ve run a training school in Kitale.“I’m still planting seeds,” he says, describing how trainees from Kenya—as well as 19 other countries in Africa and beyond—head back home with a new-found knowledge to feed their communities.

(2024·新课标Ⅱ卷)We all know fresh is best when it comes to food.However, most produce at the store went through weeks of travel and covered hundreds of miles before reaching the table.While farmer’s markets are a solid choice to reduce the journey, Babylon Micro-Farm (BMF) shortens it even more.
  BMF is an indoor garden system.It can be set up for a family.Additionally, it could serve a larger audience such as a hospital, restaurant or school.The innovative design requires little effort to achieve a reliable weekly supply of fresh greens.
  Specifically, it’s a farm that relies on new technology.By connecting through the Cloud, BMF is remotely monitored.Also, there is a convenient app that provides growing data in real time.Because the system is automated, it significantly reduces the amount of water needed to grow plants.Rather than watering rows of soil, the system provides just the right amount to each plant.After harvest, users simply replace the plants with a new pre-seeded pod (容器) to get the next growth cycle started.
  Moreover, having a system in the same building where it’s eaten means zero emissions (排放) from transporting plants from soil to salad.In addition, there’s no need for pesticides and other chemicals that pollute traditional farms and the surrounding environment.
  BMF employees live out sustainability in their everyday lives.About half of them walk or bike to work.Inside the office, they encourage recycling and waste reduction by limiting garbage cans and avoiding single-use plastic.“We are passionate about reducing waste, carbon and chemicals in our environment,” said a BMF employee.

As temperatures rise to record levels and wildfires happen around the world, the need to meet net zero targets has never been more urgent.At the same time, increasing climate resilience (适应力) across food systems will be needed to fight rising hunger, according to Abdulla Shahid, president of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
Agrivoltaic farming (光伏农业), which uses the shaded space under solar panels to grow crops, could be a way out.In the system, solar panels have to sometimes be lifted or suspended to allow plants to grow beneath them.Another option is putting them on the roofs of greenhouses.This allows enough light and rainwater to reach the crops and provides access for farm machinery.
Certain crops appear to grow well when grown in such environments, according to many recent studies.Researchers in South Korea have been growing a kind of vegetable underneath solar panels.The panels are positioned 2-3 metres off the ground and sit at an angle of 30 degrees, providing shade and offering crops protection from the sun.The researchers, from Chonnam National University, discovered that the vegetable produced was a deeper shade of green, thus attracting many consumers.
Agrivoltaic systems in East Africa are allowing farmers to make better use of land.An Agrivoltaic farming project in Kenya is using solar panels held several metres off the ground, with gaps in between them.The shade from the panels protects vegetables from heat stress and water loss.This has resulted in rural farmers being able to grow a greater range of higher-value crops.The project effectively harvests the power of the sun twice, the researchers say.
Overall, Agrivoltaic farming is one way of using the same area of land to produce more food while also rolling out more sources of renewable energy.According to Brite Solar CEO Dr Nick Kanopoulos, who is a highly skilled solar energy expert, it’s a new way of farming—one that is fully electric, runs on renewable resources, and is capable of producing the food we need to feed the future.

Dale Bolton was driving to his home in Toronto when he heard the
statistic that changed his life.He was listening to a speech that said
there were over 34 million orphans in Africa.“I almost ran into a
