Carol-Anne O’Callaghan,a former teacher from Great Missenden,Buckinghamshire, has fought hard to protect ancient oaks near her home, which she says are home to rare bats.
In February 2021,O’Callaghan was walking her dogs when she spotted yellow dots stuck on some of the 99 oak trees in a narrow country lane close to her home. The dots indicated trees marked for destruction. After she learned the trees would be felled as part of the HS2 high-speed railway works, she called the HS2 helpline and was told there was nothing that could be done as an over-road would be built. She gets choked up remembering the moment she realized many of them were to be cut down.
O’Callaghan loves that ancient line of oaks. They were planted in the 19th century.“My family and I would picnic under them,” she says,“climb them, have rope swings on them. The trees are amazing and beautiful and mean so much to us.” One of the last photos of her mother, taken shortly before she died, was of her sitting in a swing in their branches.
She noticed that on the other side of the lane,to the north, there were no ancient oaks.So she began campaigning to save the trees. With the help of her daughter,Blaize, she started a petition(请愿书),which went on to get nearly 43,000 signatures.“I saw someone passionate about giving a voice to those who don’t have one, someone not afraid of asking questions and calling out large, daunting businesses for doing the wrong thing,” says her neighbour Victoria.
Buckinghamshire Council has got involved, and the felling is paused.A final decision has yet to be made about the proposed over-road.“We’re optimistic that they’ll hear our argument and take the ecology of the lane into account,” says O’Callaghan.“We want them to put in a green crossing in the gaps between trees, for the bats, and we’d like the place to become a conservation area. For the trees and the bats—this is what we are fighting for!”
24.What did the yellow dots on the oaks indicate
A.These oaks would be cut down.
B.The narrow lane would be widened.
C.Rare bats would get protected.

More than 3/4 of the Southeast Asia population is agriculture-based.Twice as much fish is consumed in this area compared to other forms of animal protein, reflecting the long coastlines and river environments of Southeast Asia. The staple food(主粮) throughout the area is rice, which has been planted for thousands of years.Rice serves as the basic staple food for more than half of the world’s population today.
In Asia, there are different styles of eating food.In India and the Middle East,as well as Southeast Asia, people eat food with their hands. It is a very direct way to experience the texture(口感) of the food, and people normally wash their hands before and after each meal.Normally, only the right hand is used,so that one knows to keep it especially clean.Generally, the foods to be eaten are placed on plates in the center of the mat or table, and people take food in small portions(一份) as they eat.
The exception to this pattern is Vietnam, where the influence of China was much stronger than anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Here, each person has chopsticks, and food is served and divided among people onto individual plates or into individual bowls.A similar pattern is found in other Asian countries where Chinese influence was especially strong,e.g.Japan,Korea and so on.
The influence of Western cultures is found not only in the use of tables and chairs in many modern Southeast Asian households, but also in the use of spoons and forks.Knives are not necessary, since meat and vegetables are cut into smaller portions before cooking or serving.A large spoon is held in the right hand, while the left hand is used to shovel food into the spoon.
28.What can be known from the first two paragraphs
A.Most of the Asians live in the cities.
B.Most people eat food with their hands throughout Asia.
C.Rice serves as the non-staple food in most areas in Southeast.
D.Southeast Asians eat more fish than other forms of animal protein.
29.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.The food.
B.The right hand.
C.The meal.
D.The texture of the food.
30.In what aspect is Vietnam an exception
A.People there eat with their hands.
B.People take food from plates with chopsticks.
C.Food is served and shared into a large plate or bowl.
D.Japanese influence is seen more than Chinese influence.
31.What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph
A.Changes caused by Western cultures.
B.The adoption of metal eating tools.
C.The introduction of seating furniture.
D.Food culture in Western countries.

Is boredom a thing of the past, like black-and-white television And,if so,is that a good thing Julie Robinson,a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today’s children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective.
“We should not fear boredom,” said Julie Robinson.“Boredom is valuable to children.Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,” she added.
Her opinion is that constant activity for a child, often the result of the dreams of parents, will lead to concerned and worrying adult. The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.
Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic device to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet?” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander
But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection.Adults need that, too. On my train journey to work this morning,I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views of the countryside. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn’t exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability—among adults as well as children—to live in the present. What Julie Robinson regards is a cross-generational phenomenon: the fear of “inactivity”.And she is right.
32.According to Julie Robinson, why is boredom considered beneficial to children
A.It enhances children’s ability to learn knowledge.
B.It helps children find effective solutions to social problems.
C.It allows children to have time to think and develop their imagination.
D.It enables children to communicate more with their parents and friends.
33.What’s the author’s attitude towards the action of parents in paragraph 4
A.Negative. B.Positive.
C.Neutral. D.Unconcerned.
34.What did the author intend to show by mentioning the train journey
A.People had too much work to do.
B.The trip on a quiet train was very boring.
C.The view of the countryside was beautiful.
D.Electronic devices influence people’s life greatly.
35.Which of the following is seen as “inactivity” according to the last paragraph
A.Sending emails on a train.
B.Playing games with friends.
C.Planning constant activity for children.
D.Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.

Why do people eat eight treasures rice pudding
Eight treasures rice pudding or “babaofan” in Mandarin is a special sweet rice dish enjoyed during Minor Cold and Chinese New Year dinner. In Chinese, the number eight is pronounced as “ba”,which is similar to another Chinese word “fa”. 37 Because of its pronunciation, this traditional Chinese dim sum is regarded as a symbol of wealth and health.

Forecasts from animals
The ancient Chinese noticed the slight changes in seasons by observing the movements of the birds.Wild geese would usually start to fly back to the north while the magpies(喜鹊) make their nests. These animals remind people of the beginning of the suitable farming and life for Minor Cold. 40 Therefore, more attention should be paid to domestic animals’ warmth.
A.It means getting rich or booming in business.

D.A railway station would be built.

根据第二段中“Boredom is valuable to children.Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity”和第三段中“The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination.”
33.What’s the author’s attitude towards the action of parents in paragraph 4
A.Negative. B.Positive.
C.Neutral. D.Unconcerned.

根据第四段前三句对父母行为的描述及最后一句“So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander?”
34.What did the author intend to show by mentioning the train journey
A.People had too much work to do.
B.The trip on a quiet train was very boring.
C.The view of the countryside was beautiful.
D.Electronic devices influence people’s life greatly.

结合该段倒数第三句“The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability—among adults as well as children—to live in the present.”
35.Which of the following is seen as “inactivity” according to the last paragraph
A.Sending emails on a train.
B.Playing games with friends.
C.Planning constant activity for children.
D.Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.
