17-year-old Yohanna Endashaw took the stage in March at the Poetry Out Loud State Finals in Springfield. “I like to allow the nerves to fuel my feelings on stage and make my emotions stronger,” Yohanna said. “I remember at the last words of the poems, my hands were shaking with all the energy.” The Niles West High School junior has competed twice in the annual Poetry Out Loud competition at her school. Both years, she took first place. Yohanna not only won the state finals this year, but she also advanced to the national finals in Washington, D. C.
From performing in competitions to writing her own poetry, Sally Graham, an English teacher at Niles West, said Yohanna has always remained committed to her skills. “She took a lot of time to practice,” Sally said, “During her free periods, she would go to the hall when no one else was there. She would work at every single line, making the poem magically come together.”
Yohanna discovered her love for performance poetry from a young age. She performed in her first poetry competition in the fourth grade. During high school, she tried to balance poetry with playing for the school basketball and volleyball teams. She also set aside time for pursuing her career passion for neuroscience (神经科学) by founding a research club for future health professionals on campus. But it was the pandemic, she said, that allowed her to focus more of her time on poetry.
Yohanna is also a newly published author. Her first book was published in September after almost a year’s effort. The book contains many of her free verse poems divided into three parts; her childhood, memories of growing up and current social issues that are important to her.
Kelly Wingo, a classmate who has grown up with Yohanna, said the first time she saw her perform a poem in class, she was blown away by Yohanna’s ability to hold the attention of the audience. “Reading her book reminded me of that moment. It really captured the raw emotions of being a teenager and growing up,” Kelly said. Yohanna said it was important for her to find poetry that resonated (共鸣) with her readers.
4. What did Sally Graham think of Yohanna?
A. Yohanna was good at writing poetry. B. Yohanna could write magic poetry.
C. Yohanna was serious about poetry. D. Yohanna was slow at writing poetry.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Yohanna’s favorite was poetry.
B. Yohanna’s school life was colorful.
C. Yohanna spent a hard time among several subjects.
D. Yohanna won the Poetry Out Loud in the fourth grade.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “blown away” in Paragraph 5?
A. Defeated. B. Disappointed. C. Frustrated. D. Impressed.
7. What is a suitable title for this passage?
A. Yohanna, a Talented Neuroscientist B. Yohanna’s Poetry Journey
C. Yohanna’s First Poetry Collection D. Yohanna, a Fighter for Competition

Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless, which is an old joke in the US. However, Susan Goldin-Meadowin, author of the book Thinking With Your Hands, has a rather different view.
“Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians,” she laughs. “Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them. Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing.”
The gesture under discussion here is the so-called “co-speech gesture”. It is much more abstract (抽象) than such symbolic gestures like a finger over the lips for “Silence!” or raising a finger to mean “Great!”. Like words, such symbolic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, co-speech gestures that accompany speech are another channel of information and emotion. For example, experimental subjects are asked to watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are told to lie and say it jumped. They may do so in words - while their hands will make a running movement. The co-speech gesture is not sign languages, either. They have clearly defined words and grammar and differ from place to place just as spoken ones do.
And the co-speech gestures have great potential for practical applications. For example, teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they are on the edge of getting it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea.
“Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at or around birth are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months, if they gesture as much as their peers. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early intervention,” Susan Goldin-Meadow in adds. “Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both.”
8. What does Susan Goldin-Meadowin really want to tell us in paragraph 2?
A Lady Diana is probably an emotional woman.
B. Italians are very talkative and gesture too much.
C. It is unnatural for the blind to gesture to each other.
D. Co-speech gestures are used by all of us unknowingly.
9. What can we say about sign languages?
A. They are as abstract as co-speech gestures.
B. They are usually learned by human beings naturally.
C. They have distinctly structured words and grammar.
D. They vary from culture to culture and person to person.
10. What does the author suggest teachers do in the passage?
A. Put enough trust in students.
B. Encourage students to tell the truth.
C. Observe the co-speech gestures carefully.
D. Teach as many tricky problems as possible.
11. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Co-speech gestures play a vital part in communication.
B. Symbolic gestures differ greatly from co-speech gestures.
C. Co-speech gestures are more difficult than sign languages.
D. Symbolic gestures have great potential for practical applications.
In 1995, UNESCO recognized five clusters of rice terraces in Ifugao as World Heritage Sites, describing them as a living cultural landscape of unmatched beauty. This recognition placed Ifugao, a province in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) of the Philippines, on the global tourist map.
From 2017 to 2019, a yearly average of 71, 400 tourists, nearly half of them foreigners, stayed in country houses in the province, according to the Department of Tourism of the Cordillera Administrative Region. In 2019, tourists in Ifugao spent nearly $18 million, according to the tourism department.
But Ifugao is more than just a beautiful landscape for tourists to admire. On these terraces, local people grow tinawon rice, a native variety (品种) that is grown only once a year.
But the tinawon and the terraces it is grown on are today endangered. As a crop grown only once a year, tinawon harvests (收成) are only enough for basic needs, forcing families to look for other forms of livelihood. Many young people are choosing to abandon ( 遗弃) rice terraces and work in cities. Rice terraces that aren't abandoned are often turned into vegetable farms. This form of farming can yield two to three times as much sellable produce per unit of land as rice farming, with three to four harvests per year.
Vegetable farming may bring money for farmers. But the chemicals (化学制品) used in vegetable farming slowly harm soil health making it unworkable. This can push farmers to clear out forested areas in search of new land. The chemicals can also pollute water sources. Besides, such practices could end the Ifugao culture that centers on rice.
There is still some hope in the Ifugao landscape. In the village of Mompolia, farmers still grow tinawon in rice fields. There are still young people here eager to learn the knowledge of growing tinawon, like 28-year-old Geomar Pugong, an engineer. He works in the provincial capital, Lagawe, but goes back home frequently to tend his family‘s rice fields.
“Eating a cup of tinawon is like eating two cups of commercial ( 商业化的) rice. It may take time to harvest, but it is more advantageous in a sense,” Pugong says.
12. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 show?
A. The number of tourists in Ifugao has fallen.
B. Tourism has become a major industry in Ifugao.
C. The Ifugao government will encourage tourism.
D. Tourism in Ifugao has influenced the environment.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Why Ifugao’s rice terraces are dying.
B. Why Ifugao’s rice terraces are valuable.
C. How Ifugao’s rice terraces are growing in popularity.
D. How Ifugao’s rice terraces are different from those in other areas.
14. What do we know about growing vegetables on the terraces?
A. It harms the environment.
B. It needs high-quality water.
C. It will bring long-term gains.
D. It somewhat benefits rice farming.
15. How does Pugong feel about growing tinawon rice?
A. It should receive support from villagers.
B. It is worth the time and hard work.
C. It is unattractive to young people.
D. It can bring in a lot of money.

In a quiet town located in the heart of China, there lived a boy named Chen. From a young age, Chen harbored a burning passion to become a famous musician, a dream that seemed far out of reach, for he was born deaf. Many in the town considered his aspiration impossible, but Chen was determined. He believed that music was not just about hearing, but about feeling and connecting with the heart and soul.
Chen’s musical journey began with the ancient guqin, a traditional Chinese instrument known for its beautiful sounds. He spent hours feeling the gentle touch of the strings under his fingertips, learning each note’s distinct sound by heart. His devotion to understanding music through its vibrations became his unique method of communicating with the music world.
Gradually the tale of the deaf boy’s extraordinary talent swiftly spread across the town and beyond, drawing crowds eager to witness his performances. Chen’s music, filled with depth and emotion, touched the hearts of many and slowly shaped his dream into reality.
His persistence and skill eventually caught the attention of a celebrated musician, professor Wang. She decided to travel far to see Chen perform. Closing his eyes, Chen allowed his hands to find their way along the guqin. Upon witnessing Chen’s live performance, professor Wang was struck with amazement. The raw emotion and skill with which Chen played gugin impressed professor Wang, a musician famous for her contributions to preserving China’s traditional music. She stood, with her heart beating with excitement and admiration for the young boy before her.
Professor Wang approached Chen, her eyes shining with respect and a newfound purpose. She recognized not just a student in him, but the passion for Chinese music. “Your talent is extraordinary.
