After years of pounding my knees and ankles in dashes and the long jump, pain ended my decades of track and field competition. But how do you live without the adrenaline (肾上腺素) of racing That’s simple. You just become sensible at age sixty and turn to competitive swimming! Suddenly, the pounding was gone, and so was the pain. However, in less than a month, I was fed up with pool laps and no sights. Now what
A friend in the Annapolis Striders had the answer. This marathoner said he had stayed fit by intense walking while healing from a running injury. “Try it,” he said. “It’s even a competitive sport.” Sure enough, a certain kind of energetic walking is a 100-year-old Olympic event called racewalking.
I took to this sport immediately. I didn’t have to enter races to be a racewalker. However, those who compete must follow rules and must please numerous hard-eyed judges or be disqualified (DQ). But for me, doing it was enough. It took me many months to become smooth in the style. I had lost a sport but had found another.
Then came a disaster. Lower back pain had arrived. “Surgery is a last solution,” I was told. Dr. Clifford Solomon, super-surgeon of Annapolis, Maryland, had the cure. It left me with full leg control, but a flopping (耷拉的) foot. I would be able to jog, but not meet racewalk rules. By chance I tuned the TV to an old movie showing Fred Astaire dancing up a storm. From the ankle down, his feet swiveled (旋转) in the very motion I needed. I turned off the TV and went to the Senior Center.
As the only man among twenty-nine students in the tap dancing class I learned that grandmothers are programmed to care for any wounded creature. Some paid particular attention to this seventy-five-year-old patient, staying after class to guide and inspire. With examples, humor, encouragement and advice, they taught me to tap dance. They cured my flopping foot.
Within a year, I was competing well enough to enter the USA Track and Field Nationals in Boston and break the American record for the 3,000- meter racewalk. And now, at eighty-six, I’m still competing and often thinking of those ladies.
4. Why did the author stop swimming
A. He couldn’t bear the pain any longer.
B. He lost the ability to compete with others.
C. He couldn’t adjust adrenaline to normal levels.
D. He was bored with it and couldn’t enjoy scenery.
5. What did the author spend many months doing
A. Visiting lots of strict judges. B. Perfecting his racewalking techniques.
C. Competing in racewalking events. D. Searching for alternatives to running.
6. What does the author want to stress in paragraph 5
A. He was the only one in need of care.
B. He engaged in diverse after-class activities.
C. He received the female classmates’ kindness.
D. The class was mostly comprised of elderly students.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Determined and conventional. B. Energetic and adventurous.
C. Committed and reliable. D. Responsible and courageous.
C
Time off is a treasure, but people often have to work practically twice as hard to prepare for it. There are projects to get ahead on, meetings to have about how to do tasks that you usually handle, requests to field from co-workers who know they soon won’t be able to reach you.
Some of the pressure that leads to the last- minute crunch may be coming from a desire not to leave tasks unfinished. According to Laura Giurge, a behavioral-science professor at the London School of Economics, many workers feel as though they must conquer their entire to-do list in order to be cut off from work and enjoy their vacation. “We think we need to finish all the things before holidays,” Giurge told me, “but then we ask, ‘When does it actually need to be finished ‘ And it turns out, probably two months from now.”
Another contributor to the pre-vacation pileup is a more general time-management phenomenon known as “deadline rush”-the idea that people tackle many tasks shortly before they need to be completed. With the single deadline of a vacation closing in on various tasks, some last-minute stress isn’t unusual.
Surely some of this urge to complete everything is a symptom of a culture that says people must first work in order to, as Giurge put it, be “deserving” of leisure. But some of it is psychological-having unfinished tasks can be mentally anxious. In the words of one academic paper, it can “cause an inner tension, originating from the need for closure.”
And Giurge suggested a fix inspired by something she’d recently heard while conducting a research study at a company. In an interview, one of the workers told Giurge that, in order to create unbroken time to catch up on important work tasks, they canceled the last two days of their trip but didn’t tell any co-workers.
To avoid the kind of pressure that would make someone cut their vacation short just to catch up on missions before officially returning to work, maybe, Giurge thought, it would be helpful to have an official day on either end of a long vacation that’s blocked off for easing into and out of time off.
8. What does the underlined word “crunch” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Unpleasant situation. B. Inner desire.
C. Strict requirement. D. Quality time.
9. Why do people often feel stressed before the vacation
A. They are frightened of tasks piling up.
B They feel ashamed having tasks unfinished.
C. They prefer finishing everything to enjoy the vacation.
D. They are requested to complete the tasks as scheduled.
10. What’s Giurge’s attitude towards the pre-vacation pileup
A. Worried. B. Negative.
C. Favorable. D. Uninterested.
11. How can we ease the pressure according to the last paragraph
A. We can fix an extra day to adapt to the work schedule.
B. We can improve our work efficiency through practice.
C. We can use the vacation to catch up on missions.
D. We can finish the tasks after the vacation quickly.
D
While humans may think of agriculture as a uniquely human achievement, ants have been farming their own food for millions of years, a new study has revealed. Researchers found that ants began farming fungi (真菌) 66 million years ago, around the time an asteroid (小行星) struck Earth and caused a global mass extinction.
While the mass extinction was destructive for many species, including dinosaurs, it presented an opportunity for fungi. With plentiful rotten plant matter on the ground, ants developed an evolutionary partnership with fungi that still endures today. Over time, this relationship grew stronger, with ants improving their agricultural practices and developing advanced methods 27 million years ago, a process similar to the domestication of crops by humans. “Ants have been practicing agriculture and fungus farming for much longer than humans have existed,” Ted Schultz, lead author of the new paper, said in a statement. “We could probably learn something from the agricultural success of these ants over the past 66 million years.” Fungi-farming ants are particularly diverse in the Americas and the Caribbean, with nearly 250 different species engaged in this practice.
The research, published in the journal Science, analyzed genetic data from hundreds of ant and fungi species to create detailed evolutionary trees. These genetic timelines played an important role in revealing the evolution of ants’ agricultural techniques. The study builds on Schultz’s 35 years of research into ant-fungus relationships, during which he and his team collected thousands of genetic samples from Central and South America. By comparing wild fungal species with ants’ domesticated fungus, the researchers determined that ants have been farming fungi since shortly after the asteroid impact.
The ants have bacteria that can produce antibiotics (抗生素) to fight off diseases attacking their fungi. “Somehow, over the course of 66 million years, they’ve been able to continue to control crop disease and develop antibiotics that continue to be effective,” Schultz told Newsweek. “We’ve only been using antibiotics for less than100 years and we have major problems keeping up with resistance and developing new antibiotics.”
12. What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A. Ants began to co-exist with fungi 27 million years ago.
B. Around 250 species of ants worldwide took part in fungi farming.
C. Ants used more advanced ways of practicing agriculture than humans.
D. Dead plant matter provided conditions for fungi to expand.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. The methods in the research process. B. The research findings on fungi farming.
C. The analysis of the genetic timeline. D. The impact of the asteroid event.
14. Which statement would Schultz probably agree with
A. Human history is much longer than that of ant agriculture.
B. The antibiotics produced by ants could be used to treat humans.
C. Further study could be focused on how to keep antibiotics effective.
D. It’s meaningless for humans to follow ants’ success story in farming.
15. What’s the best title for this text
A. Ants are smarter than humans
B. Agriculture isn’t unique to humans
C. Ants provided solutions for human farming
D. Ants mastered agriculture long before humans

Uh oh. It happened again. You’ve walked into a room with a purpose, only to realize you have no idea why you’re there or what you were doing. Some people like to call them ‘brain farts’ — those moments when your brain seems to make you feel or look stupid.
What causes brain farts Forgetting a name, losing focus, or struggling to think clearly are pretty standard and often linked to stress, fatigue, and multitasking demand. ____16____ This model contains information about the environment and the various thoughts and actions that relate to it.
While brain farts are a part of life, there are things you can do to minimize how often they happen — and deal with them gracefully when they do:
Stay organized: Keeping your space neat, tidy, and organized can go a long way toward minimizing mental mishaps (晦气). ____17____
Write things down: If you tend to forget certain information, such as names, dates, or appointments, start writing them down as soon as you can. ____18____ Sometimes, just the act of writing it down can help strengthen it more firmly in your memory.
Use active listening: ____19____ “It’s also helpful to resist the urge to multitask,” Dr. Fenkel suggests. “Instead, try to focus on one thing at a time, allowing your brain to engage with the task entirely.”
____20____: Brain farts are more likely to happen when you are tired, so strive to get enough rest each night. “Prioritizing sleep is super important; a well-rested brain is sharper and less prone (易于) to errors,” Dr. Fenkel says.
If these tricks aren’t helping, or if you notice that your memory problems are worsening, talk to your doctor. They can evaluate your memory for signs of a more serious problem — and suggest treatments or solutions that can help.
A. Get plenty of sleep
B. Enjoy a good night
C. Forgetful moments tend to strike when you’re multitasking.
D. According to researchers, it happens because our brains create a temporary “event model.”

Two tickets. Only two tickets to the big basketball game. Three pairs of eyes all focused on the tickets in Dad’s outstretched hand.
Marcus, the oldest, spoke the question running through everyone’s mind, “Only two tickets But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you ”
“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go ” repeated Caleb, the youngest.
“Dad, can’t you get any more tickets ” I asked. I might be the in-between sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers were for a night out with Dad.
“I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams only has two tickets. He was thoughtful enough to offer the tickets to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend.”
Dad scratched his head, “Caleb, don’t you think you’re a little young to enjoy a professional basketball game… ”“Am not! Am not!” Caleb insisted. Dad shifted his focus and tried again. “Jill, since you’re a girl…” Before I could respond, Mom came to my defense and said, “Jill’s out there practicing with Marcus and all of his friends, and she’s better than quite a few of them, too!”
“Okay, okay,” Dad smiled. “I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most.”
The next morning, Marcus hurried into the kitchen. “Where’s Dad ” he asked. “He and Mom went to pick up some books from the library,” Caleb answered, digging his spoon into a bowl of cereal (麦片).
“And he said we should all get started on our Saturday household chores as soon as we finish breakfast,” I added.
“Chores! He’s got to be kidding. ” Marcus said. “How can we concentrate on chores when the big game is a mere eleven hours away ” “I’m going to play basketball for a while,” Marcus announced.
“Wait for me!” Caleb added and dashed after his brother. The back door slammed shut as the two boys ran down the driveway.

【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. B

E. Make a designated spot for the items you use regularly, like your keys, glasses, and wallet.
F. As you take in new information, work on staying fully engaged and giving it your full attention.
G. You might keep a notebook handy or try an online app to keep track of this type of information.

【答案】Dear Eric,
Knowing that you are planning to collect some music that helps relieve our learning stress, I’m writing with great delight and excitement to share with you my ideal music-Schubert’s Serenade.
This piece is one of the masterpieces of Austrian composer Schubert, who is known as “Lord of the Songs”. And the entire piece lasts less than ten minutes, which makes it a perfect choice to play in the ten-minute break. At the sound of the music, you will find yourself immersed in its beautiful melody and fantastic world, thus forgetting your worries and sufferings. Admittedly, it is an effective way to reduce anxiety and stress, get refreshed and stay focused in class if you listen attentively on a daily basis.
With an increasing number of students under various stress, finding a way out is a must. So, why not give this melody a shot
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】Paragraph 1:
I looked at the breakfast table in front of me: bits of cereal here and there. I pushed my chair away from the table, thinking to myself: “It looks like Saturday morning chores start right here.” As I was doing the chores, I heard the basketball bouncing off the driveway. I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw Marcus practicing shooting the basketball while Caleb cheered him on. Frustrated, though, I continued the household chores. I carried the rubbish outside the back door and opened the lid on the rubbish bin.
Paragraph 2:
A white envelope was taped to the inside of the rubbish bin lid (盖子). Someone had written the word “Congratulations!” on the cover. I opened the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper, “To the one who deserves to go”, the paper read, and inside of it was a ticket to the basketball game! That evening turned out to be as special as I’d imagined: Two seats at Center Court, and Dad and I cheering our team to victory. It was also a lesson in responsibility from a dad, who let his kids make their own choices and earn their own rewards.
