The pleasant smell of freshly roasted coffee filled the air inside an old-fashioned but attractive cabin in the eastern Chinese village, which houses Frank Sterzer's café: Bamboo Coffee Roasters.
Having worked as an engineer in Germany and China for over two decades, Frank discovered a new sense of purpose in Maoli village near Ningbo, Zhejiang province. Driven by a long-standing passion for coffee, he turned his hobby into a thriving enterprise by roasting quality beans. “Zhejiang's countryside offers great infrastructure (基础设施)and beautiful landscapes, making it the perfect place to launch a business,” says Frank. Maoli is conveniently less than 30 minutes from downtown Ningbo, blending urban accessibility with rural peace.
To Frank, enjoying a cup of coffee along with homemade cake while taking in the rural views represents the peaceful lifestyle he wishes to share with his guests. “The café is a space where people can experience the charm of this mountain village,” he adds.
The name Bamboo Coffee Roasters comes from the plentiful bamboo surrounding Maoli, and its logo was inspired by Frank's photo of a local bamboo forest. Behind the shop, a small coffee factory houses excellent beans from around the world, stored beside softly humming roasting machines. Frank roasts up to 10 metric tons of beans a year, which has helped make the café a success.
Since its opening in June 2024, the café has quickly become a popular spot, drawing both local and international visitors, especially with China's expanded visa-free policies. Before the Spring Festival, guests came from various places. One tourist noted, “We came to Ningbo for local delicacies and business, purchasing local produce. Products such as honey oranges, bamboo shoots and tea have also found wider markets, thanks to the café’s popularity,” one tourist said.
4. What made Frank set up the café in Maoli
A. The village's facilities and scenery.
B. China's expanded visa-free policies.
C. Frank's newly found enthusiasm.
D. The convenience in the rural area.
5. Which of the following details about the coffee roasting process at Bamboo Coffee Roasters is mentioned
A. Frank personally delivers the roasted beans to customers in Ningbo.
B. The beans are sourced exclusively from farmers in Zhejiang province.
C. The roasting machines operate quietly in the background of the shop.
D. The annual production capacity of roasted beans reaches about ten metric tons.
6. What can be inferred about Frank Sterzer from the passage
A. He values a peaceful lifestyle and cultural exchange more than a high-income city career.
B. He plans to open a chain of similar cafés in major Chinese cities in the near future.
C. His engineering background is directly responsible for the design of the roasting machines.
D. He chose the location primarily because of the low cost of land and labor in the countryside.
7. Why is the tourist remark mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To promote the sale of the local produce.
B. To prove guests promoted Frank's business.
C. To show Frank's business enhanced local economy.
D. To share the interest of tourists in exploring Ningbo.

Chinese Teapot Escaping from British Museum Goes Viral
A viral video series telling the story of a jade teapot coming to life and escaping the British Museum to return home has gained wide praise from Chinese state media.
The three short videos, titled Escape from the British Museum, show the teapot transforming into a young woman in a green dress. She asks for the help of a Chinese journalist in London to return to her family. Released by independent vloggers on Douyin, the series quickly struck a chord (心弦) in China, receiving over 310 million views. The story reflects growing public criticism toward the British Museum, especially after recent reports that more than 1,500 items, including gold jewelry, semi-precious stones and glass, had been stolen or damaged.
In August, the state media Global Times called for the return of Chinese artifacts from the museum “free of charge” in the wake of the controversy (公开辩论). The huge holes in the management and security of cultural objects in the British Museum exposed by this scandal (丑闻) have led to the collapse of a long-standing and widely circulated claim that “foreign cultural objects are better protected in the British Museum.” It praised the video for conveying a strong message about cultural heritage and reflecting Chinese people’s desire for the repatriation of relics.
The museum scandal made headlines around the world and reawakened earlier demands by the Chinese media to restore the country’s relics. The new three-part show has triggered a wave of nationalism among viewers, with many praising the creative plot that reduced them to tears by showing how the teapot experienced the happiness of returning to China to see pandas and watch a flag-raising ceremony on Tian’anmen Square.
8. What excuse does Britain give for keeping other nations’ cultural objects in its museum
A It has taken possession of these objects by all lawful means.
B. These objects are safer and taken better care of in its museum.
C. It is requested by other nations to protect their cultural objects.
D. These objects may come to life, flee their countries and go viral.
9. What does the underlined word “repatriation” (Para. 3) probably mean
A. Repair. B. Reflection. C. Reserve. D. Return.
10. Which of the following can we infer from the passage
A. China had already demanded the restoration of its cultural relics before the scandal.
B. The museum’s awful management and security systems are involved in the scandal.
C. The British Museum is under pressure to return the cultural relics to China sooner or later.
D. A London-based Chinese journalist has contributed a lot to the viral three-part video series.
11. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To appeal to Britain to return China’s cultural objects.
B. To introduce a viral video series about a fleeing jade teapot.
C. To arouse readers’ concern about Chinese cultural objects abroad.
D. To praise Chinese young people’s passion for history and tradition.
D
Researchers led by Josie Hughes in the CREATE Lab in EPFL’s School of Engineering wanted to develop a robot that could go across diverse environments as skillfully as animals by changing form on the fly. With GOAT (Good Over All Terrains) they have achieved just that—and created a new model for robotic movement and control in the process.
“While most robots compute the shortest path from A to B, GOAT considers the travel pattern as well as the path to be taken,” Hughes explains. “For example, instead of going around an obstacle like a stream, GOAT can swim straight through. If its path is hilly, it can passively roll downhill like a ball to save both time and energy, and then actively drive as a rover (漫游者) when rolling is no longer beneficial.”
To design their robot, the CREATE team took inspiration from across the animal kingdom, including spiders and kangaroos. The team’s bioinspired approach led to a design that is highly compliant (顺应的), meaning it adapts in response to interaction with its environment, rather than remaining unchangeable. This allows GOAT to actively alter its shape to change its passive properties, which range from more flexible in its ‘rover’ model to stronger as a ball.
CREATE Lab PhD student Max Polzin explains that compliance also allows GOAT to navigate with minimal sensing equipment. With only a satellite navigation system and a device for measuring the robot’s own direction, GOAT carries no cameras onboard. “It doesn’t need complex sensing. It can use the environment, even with very limited knowledge of it, to find the best path,” Polzin says.
Future research includes improved algorithms (算法) to help with GOAT’s design. Looking ahead, the researchers see many potential applications for their device, from environmental monitoring to disaster response.
12. What key feature distinguishes GOAT
A. Rolling downhill like a ball.
B. Calculating the shortest A-to-B path.
C. Navigating obstacles such as streams.
D. Efficient adaptation to varied terrains.
13. Where did GOAT’s designers find their solution
A. From previous robots. B. From other researches.
C. From other species. D. From edging information.
14. In which field will GOAT probably be applied
A. Education. B. Climate. C. Finance. D. Medicine.
15 What would be the best title for the passage
A. The Future Applications of GOAT
B. The Development of a New Robot: GOAT
C. GOAT: A Robot for Diverse Environments
D. How GOAT Saves Time and Energy in Travel

The Araguaia River is one of the biggest rivers in Brazil. It is home to thousands of animals. River dolphins swim and play in the water, and there are many different colored fish.
In one town, a 13-year-old boy named Rhenan walks along the river every day. But looking at the river makes him worry because there is rubbish everywhere. He sees plastic bottles, old clothing, and empty food packages. The water looks dark and ugly.
One day Rhenan asked about the dirty river at school. “You wouldn’t want rubbish in your house,” said his teacher. “Think about the poor animals!” For days, Rhenan couldn’t stop thinking about the river. It doesn’t seem right to him that this big and powerful river is filled with rubbish. “It’s hurting the animals in my area,” he thought. “And it’s also hurting the families who live here.” Then Rhenan had an idea.
The next morning, Rhenan talked to his mother about his plan for the river. He wanted to go around his town and ask for everyone’s help. Maybe if they all worked together, they could clean up the river!
Rhenan’s mother loved his idea. “I believe the most important thing for you, Rhenan, is learning how to change things that you care about. That will stay with you forever.” She said. She told him she would help him along the way.
The next day, Rhenan went to the police department and next to the office of the Mayor (市长). He visited offices, businesses, and other schools. Soon he had a very big group of people who like his idea! They all decided to meet at the river the following week. On the day of the river clean-up, Rhenan was excited—but he was also nervous. What if no one showed up But when he and his mother arrived, there were almost a hundred people there, including many of Rhenan’s friends.

Dear Gary,
I’m writing to tell you about the grand military parade on September 3rd, 2025 in Beijing. It celebrated the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The parade showed many advanced weapons made in China, soldiers marching perfectly and planes flying in the sky. It was a great display of our country’s strength and history. What moved me most was the message of peace. The parade was not just about showing military power, but also about remembering the past and protecting peace, which made me realize how important it is to value the peaceful life we have today.
I feel very proud of my country’s achievements and its efforts for world peace. I hope we can always remember history and work together for a better future.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1
Over the whole day, they all worked together to clean up the trash. They managed to pick up the plastic bottles, old clothing, and food packages in the river and pulled them out of the water. As they worked, Rhenan noticed how everyone was laughing and smiling. Obviously, they were happy to do this. It did make them feel good to help their community. They were really productive, and when they were done, they picked up almost a tonne of rubbish—that’s the same weight as a car! It was really surprising.
Paragraph 2
At the end of the day, everyone started to cheer. They were proud of the change that they had made—the river rushes along beside them, clean and clear. Looking at the river, they thanked Rhenan. Rhenan felt like he was on top of the world. To stop problems like this from happening again, the town decided to teach everyone why throwing rubbish in the river was harmful. They also planned to help the river by planting more trees along the riverbank for birds to live in.
