A few days ago, my husband, Russ, and I lost our house of 28 years to a California wild fire.
On that night, we had to leave our house and sleep in the back seat of our Ford. The next morning, we had to drive three and a half hours to find a hotel that had a room available. Only later, in the local newspaper, did we see photographs of the destruction. Our house had been consumed by the fire along with most of our neighborhood.
“How are we going to rebuild our house after this ” I thought, rounding a corner on the sidewalk on my walk back to the hotel. “Is it even possible ”
I noticed something up ahead — a pair of nickels (五分镍币), shining like precious jewels. They were just nickels, but they somehow felt special. I bent down and picked them up. If these were lucky coins, I could use all the luck I could get.
A few days later, I made a trip to the store to buy essentials. The enormous task of replacing everything we’d lost put a heavy weight on me. I was about to leave when I felt the urge to stop and turn my head to the right, I could hardly believe it—there on a shelf, was a nickel! “Okay, maybe this is more than luck,” I thought and put the nickel in my pocket.
I told myself that I had found the nickels just by chance. Then I found one next to my plate at a restaurant — on Thanksgiving, when I was missing our house more than ever. It seemed that a nickel appeared whenever my spirits sank.
Whenever I reached my breaking point, I’d find another nickel. In the grass at the park, or near the tire of my car in a parking lot. Once, my change for a quick lunch was given entirely in nickels. “I’m sorry,” the cashier said. “It’s all we have.” “It’s all I need!” I said.
One day, I was sitting at the desk when my phone rang. It was a real-estate agent I’d been working with. “I have a new listing,” she said. “When can we see it ”
A few hours later, Russ and I were following the agent down the driveway toward the house. I didn’t think long. Because there, in the driveway...

“Who’s a good reader It’s you, isn’t it ” This is a typical example of “parentese (父母语)”. Recent research suggests that parents speaking parentese to their babies can give the babies’ language development a serious boost. In the study, researchers found that teaching parents how to speak proper parentese enhanced their ability to communicate with their babies — and even improved the children’s long-term language skills.
Parentese is distinct from conventional baby talk, which mostly relies on silly sounds and made-up words. In the 1960s, scientists studying speech patterns across different languages noticed a unique style that adults used addressing young children. This language was characterized by simple words and grammar, high pitch (音调) and a much slower speed. The baby-directed speech was first named “motherese” before it was called “parentese”.
Later research showed parentese is grammatically correct, with real words and phrases, which helped babies differentiate between words and process what was being said. “We’ve known for some time that use of parentese is associated with improved language outcomes, but we didn’t know why,” says Patricia K. Kuhl, the new research’s senior author. But Kuhl thinks the new research suggests why parentese helps babies learn language skills.
“We now think parentese works because it’s a social attraction for the baby brain,” she says. “Its high pitch and slower speed are socially engaging and invite the baby to respond.”
All 71 families in the new study had their children equipped with a special coat with an audio recorder built in. During four separate weekends when the babies were 6,10,14 and 18months old, the researchers recorded all of the interactions between family members and the babies. The 48 families who were randomly selected for a course in parentese learned about ways to include more parentese in conversation.
And even though all of the participating families used some form of parentese at the start of the study, the babies of parents who received coaching showed the most improvements in their conversation skills. Beyond that, those babies had a 100-word vocabulary compared with the control group, who only knew 60 words at 18 months.
8. Which aspect of the new study does paragraph 1 focus on
A. Its aim. B. Its result. C. Its procedure. D. Its participants.
9. What did scientists find about parentese in the 1960s
A. It was easy to follow. B. It was unique to mothers.
C. It was full of made-up words. D. It was similar to traditional baby talk.
10. What does Kuhl say about parentese
A. It inspires babies to speak more. B. It has short-term effects on babies.
C. It teaches babies more social skills. D. It helps babies differentiate words and phrases.
11. What does the underlined word “coaching” in the last paragraph mean
A. Casual advice or guidance. B. Formal training or instruction.
C. Observation without intervention. D. Emotional support without practical help.
D
As New Year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting fireworks to light up the sky. But the fireworks could finally lose their appeal with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows. One obvious example was drone light show in the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics.
Ollie Howitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London’s New Year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were increasingly able to fly in greater density (密度) and for longer. Howitt also said there were benefits of drones. “They give out no pollutants, they’re reusable, and there’s no fallout or that kind of thing. So in that sense they are a very sensible choice.”
Robert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display at the harbor was down to a number of factors, including the impact of fireworks on animals—from wildlife to the pets of boat owners. “They’ve often commented on how much suffering is caused to their pets by the fireworks,” he said.
But not everyone agrees. Hans Rosling, a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (锂) batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” he said. “The impact of firework use on the environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by fireworks at an event.”
And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approval from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn’t mean shutting off fireworks. The bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace. Meanwhile, others prefer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of images.
12. Why does the author talk about the Tokyo Olympics in paragraph 1
A. To attract readers’ attention to the Olympics.
B. To advocate setting off fireworks in the New Year.
C. To introduce the popular use of drones for light shows.
D. To highlight people’s celebration of this opening ceremony.
13. What did Ollie Howitt think of drone displays
A. They bring environmental problems.
B. They cause little suffering to the pets.
C. They add color to the New Year celebration.
D. They are economical and environmentally-friendly.
14. Which of the following did Hans Rosling agree with
A. Firework displays last shorter than drone displays.
B. Drones have less impact on the environment than fireworks.
C. The pollution from fireworks isn’t as much as people think.
D People should abandon the drone displays because of lithium batteries.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. The safety concerns surrounding the use of drones for light shows.
B. The environmental benefits of drone light shows compared to traditional fireworks.
C. The technical advancements in drone technology that enable complex light displays.
D. The growing popularity of drone light shows and their potential impact on fireworks displays.

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site (工地). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring (雇佣) ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract (合同) to work a 12-hour shift (轮班). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks (砖块) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds (眼罩) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why ” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense.

【答案】范文
A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. In the distance, he saw a familiar figure in worn-out clothes, covered in dust and sweat, lifted heavy bricks with her weathered hands at the construction site. As he drew closer, he realized it was his mother, Catherine. Catherine tirelessly moved heavy bricks with her ugly and rough hands under the scorching sun. Her face was covered in sweat, and she didn't even have time to wipe it off as she rushed back and forth, working tirelessly. Peter stood there in shock, unable to utter a single word. Meanwhile, a wave of guilt and regret flooded over him. He shouldn’t have said those hurtful words.
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. Peter couldn't shake off the guilt and regret for his hurtful words towards his mother. He knew he had to make things right and apologize to her. The moment Catherine stepped into the house from work, Peter rushed up to her, gently took her hands in his and held them tightly. “Mom, I’m sorry” he murmured, tears welling up in his eyes, “I didn’t understand then, but now I see how hard you work for us. Your hands may be rough, but they are the most beautiful hands in the world because they care for us.” Tears welled up in Catherine’s eyes as she embraced her son, a wave of happiness washing over her. From that day on, Peter not only attended the school event with his mother but also stood by her side, holding her hands with pride.
