When I was a boy, my mom used to say I would read the back of a medicine bottle if I didn’t have a book in my hand. It was true, and even now that reading habit has been with me. I always have at least one book being read, and sometimes I might have two or three. And I’m talking about real books, books made out of paper, books that you can hold in your hands, to read, at the table, on the subway or my favorite place to read—in the bath.
But the number of people reading books is dropping. A recent survey tells us that Chinese people only read 4.77 printed books a year on average and in the US, 25 percent of the population say they didn’t read a book last year! So what’s stopping people from reading
The answer, of course, is the huge influence that technology has had on our life. Why do you read a book when you can watch a movie or TV play on your smartphones or tablet computers For younger people, books may not be as exciting as online games. There are no shortcuts to reading a book. You have to turn page after page.
But you can still get lost in a book. We all have this thing called imagination. It’s much more powerful than any computer; in fact, all online games are about the creators’ imagination.
So we need to read—if we do not read, it will be hard for us to improve our ability to think wisely, to have an imagination. Reading is a process in which we need to compare and connect other things we have read and seen in the past. If you do not read, this will influence not only your study but also your social life in the future.
So why not follow me from now on Run a hot bath, or find a comfortable chair and read a good book for a few hours—there are quite a few, for free, in your local library.

C.Read more books in our life. D.Read books in a comfortable chair.
There are lots of things you have to do. But sometimes it’s hard to get to the finish line, just like your goal. 5 And how can you break your bad habits and develop good ones Here are some opinions that we often get from kids, and these ideas may help you.
I can’t get away from screens.
6 If you usually spend time lying on the sofa and watching TV programs or a video when you’re bored, go somewhere else instead. Take a book to your room or your guitar to the garden. Or ask if you can help cook in the kitchen.
7
Start with “showing up”. Then take one small step or do one small task, followed by another and another. For example, how do I practice the piano First sit at it. Then play one note at a time. Starting with a super-simple step often helps. Why 8 Then keep taking steps.
I have no time.
Take a look at the choices you make about how you spend time. 9 Can you spend 10 minutes a day working on a goal Let’s suppose you want to be a singer. Is it more important to practice singing than play video games Think about whether you can let go of something less important to free up time to achieve your goal.
A.I can’t achieve such a big goal.
B.To develop a habit, try changing.
C.Why don’t you take up a hobby
D.I’m not brave enough to ask for help.

Not so long ago, people lived in big families. Children grew up knowing their cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and other relatives. These children felt connected (有联系的).
At that time, people were connected to their food. Most people grew their own vegetables and fruit. Many families had a house cow for milk, cheese, butter and cream. Most families also had meat animals. When visitors came unexpectedly, dad would be sent to kill the chicken for dinner. Everyone helped with cooking and mealtimes were a social event. When the meal ended, most of the families cleaned up and washed up together. But how different is the situation today
The fast life is all around us—fast food, fast cars, fast conversations, fast families and fast holidays. Our fast-paced life has weakened these connections. We have been fooled into thinking that we need to, or even must, be fast and have what the “fast life” gives us. Stress (压力) is causing many new health problems.
The way to solve the problem is the Slow Movement. It aims to deal with the problem of “time poverty (匮乏)” through making connections. It supports a growing cultural change towards slowing down. It has spread to more than sixty countries and become a worldwide movement.
The Slow Movement tells us that we need to slow down and connect with our life. We need connection to ourselves, our family, our community and our friends, to food, to place where we live, and to life.
By being part of the Slow Movement, many people have known how they lost connection to most sides of their lives and to the natural world and rhythms (节奏). And more importantly, they have reconnected—have lived a new connected lifestyle.
10.If we ________, we are connected to food.
A.eat each meal slowly
B.buy our food by ourselves
C.grow and cook our food by ourselves
D.enjoy our mealtimes with other family members

A.Fast, disconnected and stressful
B.Rich, disconnected and comfortable
C.Healthy, busy and disconnected
D.Convenient (方便), relaxing and fast
12.By the underlined sentence, the writer mainly wants to tell us that many people ________.
A.have got used to fast life B.have got something valuable from fast life
C.have diseases caused by fast life D.have unwise opinions about fast life
13.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A.the problem B.the movement C.the culture D.the connection
14.What’s the purpose of the passage

On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material (材料).”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea, but I was determined to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her Science book facing me and said, “Okay Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead, we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively seeking to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorizing; she was trying to understand things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
15.Why did Juliet feel down
A.Because she failed her science test. B.Because she had trouble memorizing a unit.
C.Because she knew nothing about planting. D.Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.
16.In the writer’s opinion, which was the key to best learning
A.Memorizing B.Testing C.Questioning. D.Understanding
17.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to
A.making her check the book B.using simple questions to test her
C.encouraging her to read the unit D.asking her to teach me the unit
18.How did the father feel when false starts happened
A.Patient. B.Worried. C.Nervous. D.Embarrassed.
19.Which can be the best title for the passage
A.A Hard-working Father B.An Unexpected Test
C.Learning from Teaching D.Preparing for Teaching
We all want to live the life we dream of. However, at times, some negative ideas may stop us. Hope the following suggestions can help to ignore those ideas and go ahead.
Do What We Can Control
One thing we can control is doing what we can—eating healthily, exercising, reading and getting enough sleep. Doing the right things can help us achieve the most happiness. Also, it can make us move on in the right direction. However, we should also accept that there are many things we can’t control.

But one day, you can’t stand your job any more, so you leave it even though you haven’t really had a plan. This is such a big risk that it will probably make you never want to take a risk again. So just start with a small risk.
Don’t Be Afraid of Failure
Thomas Edison is one of the greatest inventors in history. However, he failed many times. Did you know Edison created an electric pen A ghost machine Probably not. You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. 31 Following some easy steps can help you.
32
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. It might sound like a word you know. Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read, you have the word!
Use context.
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: Look at the context. 33 Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. If the word shelter doesn’t look familiar (熟悉的), look at the words around it. Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
Use word parts.
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. 34
Look it up.
35 You can find the word in a dictionary—either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don’t know.
A.Try to say it.
B.So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
C.What should you do when you come to a new word
D.The other words and sentences around it may help you.
E.If these steps above don’t work, you can turn to other useful tools.

Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop” before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.
Learn to refuse. Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.

Now, more and more people have difficulties in falling asleep. “In fact, we can train our brain to fall asleep,” says sleep expert Michael Grandner. Here are his top ways.
Make a plan and stick to it.
Melatonin (褪黑素) is produced by the body to control when you get sleepy and when you wake up. As night falls, the levels of melatonin rise, telling the body that it’s time for bed. And the levels naturally fall as daylight comes near, getting you ready to greet the day.
The release (释放) of melatonin needs to be at regular (有规律的) times. So if your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day, your body doesn’t know how to respond (回应). So it’s important to have a regular bedtime and wake up time, even on weekends.
Don’t lie in bed awake.
In fact this way is very helpful. Whether it’s the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you’ve been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up. Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don’t spend that time awake in bed.
Change your attitude (态度) about sleep.
Many people regard sleeping as the final thing in a busy day, so they would rather delay sleeping to do housework, schoolwork or others. That thought needs to be changed. Make sure your sleep time is enough in order to work better the next day. It may sound like a small change, but it’s an important one.

C.When you feel sleepy. D.When daylight comes.
83.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.A rise in melatonin levels tells the body it’s time for bed.
B.Enough sleep time can’t make you work better the next day.
C.It’s not necessary for us to sleep or wake up at a regular time.
D.It’s best to stay in bed if you’re awake too long during the night.
84.What does the underlined word “delay” mean in Chinese
A.暗示 B.督促 C.调理 D.推迟
85.What is the passage mainly about
A.The importance of sleeping well. B.The change of bedtime and wake-up time.

Maybe you won’t think you can be the best student. However, anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s some advice.
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule. First set your time for eating, sleeping, sports, etc. Then decide on a good and enough time for studying. __▲__. A weekly schedule may not make you the best, but it will make you know what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. It may be a desk or a corner of your room, only things for study. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, keep your mind on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Listen to everything the teacher says. Listening in class carefully means less work later. Taking notes will also help.
Have daily study. When you get home from school, read your notes before doing your homework. Read the text that your teacher is going to teach the next day. This will help you understand the importance of the next class.
