Li Mei is a 13-year-old girl in Fujian. She studies English very hard. Every day, she listens carefully in class and does many exercises after class. However, in the last English exam her score of 68 made her very sad. “Why didn’t I get a good grade, though I worked hard ” Li said to herself.
Lots of middle school students are facing this problem—they try their best to do something, but can’t make it. “They don’t have effective (有效的) learning methods. This is the main reason for their difficulties,” says Mr. Wang. Mr. Wang is a well-known English teacher at Beijing No.1 High School, a key school in the capital city. He thinks that hard work is far from enough for middle school students. “Students have more subjects now. They should learn in many different ways so that they can get twice the result with half the hard work,” says Mr. Wang. “The more you use new words, the better you can remember them. For example, making sentences with new words is an effective way to learn.”
Lin Ping, a 15-year-old girl from Shanghai, has a habit of reading. “I usually read English novels like The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway after finishing my homework,” says Lin. “While reading, I take notes. In this way, I can remember more words and improve my reading and writing.”
Chen Xiao, a 14-year-old boy from Guangdong, has his own way of learning English. “I study hard at school, and I also like watching CCTV-9. On the channel (频道), I can always review the English words I have learned from my textbooks,” says Chen. “It’s really useful.”

Recently, the topic of “the country is calling you to lose weight (减肥)” has become very popular. The Chinese government has started a three-year “Weight Management Year” program lasting from 2024 to 2026 to solve the weight problem.
Being overweight and being obese (肥胖的) have become serious problems in China. According to a report, about 10.4 percent of children under the age of six in China are overweight, while nearly 20 percent of Chinese people between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight or obese.
Doctors use BMI (BMI=weight/height2) to quickly check if a person is normal, overweight, or obese. For adults, a healthy BMI falls within the range (范围) of 18.5 to 23.9. A BMI between 24 and 27.9 is considered overweight, and a BMI of 28 or higher shows obesity. Also, doctors advise people to measure their waist (测量腰围): men should keep it under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
To make the program go well, schools have organized activities like weekly walking, bike riding, and dancing. In the community, doctors have helped people with weight problems. They give them good ideas on what to eat and how to exercise. The government hopes that families can join in. Parents can cook healthy meals at home. Families can also go for walks or bike rides together on weekends.
This program is not for a short time, but for the long term. The goal (目标) is to help people live a happy and healthy life.

It’s often believed that only grown-ups can make a difference. Is it true Tea Vogue interviewed some teenagers across the world. Get ready to be inspired (启发).
16-year-old Michael began using social media to cheer up teenagers of his age to follow their dreams on his baseball blogs. Michael talked about sportspeople and how they would face their challenges.
Lesein, 14 years old, first learned about climate change when he was twelve years old. His home country, Kenya loses about 29,650 acres of forest each year. With a deep love of soccer, Lesein started Trees for Goals, planting a tree for every goal he scored in a match. Later the school’s soccer and basketball teams all followed him. In 2019, almost 1,000 trees in forests outside of Nairobi were planted. Now the government provides trees for them to plant.
Alexis Lewis, a 15-year-old inventor designed a simple wheelchair with bamboo to help poor people who need to transport children many miles to hospitals. Another invention of his is a special mask which can be thrown through a window of a smoke-filled building to people inside. Alexis said, “People are dying in a fire accident because they can’t be saved in time. Another reason why I want to invent something is that I love physics and I want to improve technologies with it.” Alexis also told our reporter that he wanted children to know that inventors can be everybody who’s ever tried to solve a problem.

He believed that if they pulled together, the State of Zhao would become powerful.

To stop more teenagers from becoming addicted (沉迷) to the Internet, the Ministry of Education (MOE, 教育部) sent a letter on April 20, 2018 to all parents in China. It calls on them to pay more attention to their children’s online activities. Nowadays more and more teenagers become addicted to the Internet. A 17-year-old boy from Guangdong Province nearly died after playing online games for 40 hours. It shows how bad things can get when one becomes addicted to the Internet.

Songs about Growing Up
Thousands of songs about growing up are available (可得到的). They can always get a response (反应) from teenagers in some way. While listening to the songs, old or new, teenagers can always feel themselves or understand themselves.
a. Songs about being a teenager: Growing up isn’t always easy. Teens always want to be independent, but parents have a hard time letting go. There can be moments of worry, uncertainty and even anger. Some songs speak of those feelings and can help them get through this period.
b. Songs about dreams: As teenagers grow, they’re likely looking forward to the day when they’ll be able to work hard to achieve their dreams. Westlife’s song I Have a Dream is well-known. The key lyrics (歌词) are “I have a dream, a song to sing. To help me deal with anything…You can take the future even if you fail”. This song has encouraged so many teenagers to fight for their dreams.
c. Graduation songs: Graduation songs usually speak of the joy of this season of their life. These songs are perfect for graduation parties and get-togethers with friends. As they graduate, they can sing “Today is where your book begins. The rest is still unwritten …”. When teenagers grow up, they find children is a bittersweet (苦乐参半的) time. My name is Mike. When I was alone at home, I was more excited than afraid.
One day my parents went out for an invitation and left me behind. As I was watching my favorite show on TV excitedly, the lights went off. “Bad luck!” I thought to myself. At that moment, I felt a bit afraid in the dark.
Suddenly I heard a loud knock on the door. I looked through the peephole (猫眼) nervously, but could not see anyone. Then another loud knock! I immediately called my neighbor who lived on the first floor. He said he was coming in a moment. At the same time, I tried to calm down and decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, something ran into the room quickly. It looked like some kind of animal, maybe one or two. I ran downstairs to call my neighbor and was relieved (放心的) to see him climbing up the stairs. We entered the room carefully and heard some noise in the kitchen. We looked inside and saw two monkeys sitting on the kitchen table. We were afraid and didn’t know what to do, so we decided to call 119. Soon, the power came back on. Living and dealing with (与……打交道) kids can be a difficult job these days . However living and dealing with parents can be even more difficult. Since I became a middle school student, I have learned that communication is very important. With any relationship (关系), you need to let other people know your feelings. If you are not able to communicate, things will become bad. If you are angry at your parents, avoiding (避免) talking to them won’t help. To keep a good relationship, you must improve communication skills. Let people know your feelings, even if it’s just by writing a note. If you are trying to tell them that you’ll listen to what they say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Then they may understand you better. Walking away only makes the situation worse. Here is an example. One night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she felt it would be rude of her to leave first. As a result, she got home late. Her parents were angry at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t so munication is the key to a good relationship. Problems can only be solved by communication. So just keep in mind: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, tell your parents how you feel.

50.What won’t be helpful when you are angry at your parents

Because I hardly did any exercise, I often felt sick and went to see the doctor. I was absent from school from time to time, so I couldn’t catch up with others. And my poor health made it even more difficult for me to keep on exercising. The cycle repeated itself. My parents were really worried about me.
One day, after having supper, my father came and asked me to have a walk with him in the park. My father insisted (坚持) that for people with very poor health, it was difficult to take up running and other sports at the beginning, but they could start from walking and increase endurance (耐力) little by little. With his encouragement, I agreed and we went out together. It was hard for me to walk for half an hour. I wanted to give up, but my father encouraged me to keep on walking.
From then on, I was often asked to walk with my parents. To my surprise, I could walk for an hour in the fourth month. How proud I felt! I loved taking exercise gradually. Now I am a perfect runner in my middle school. I lost all the fat and I am a health y girl now.
