The warmth of the family gathering has always been a beacon (灯塔) in my life, a constant source of strength and happiness. Those moments, full of love and laughter, have shaped who I am today and continue to influence my outlook on life. The power of togetherness is a lesson I learned early on, and it’s a principle I carry with me every day.
When we were growing up, our family had a valuable tradition that filled our lives with joy and anticipation. Every Saturday evening, we would set off to visit our extended family, and the excitement was obvious. The pleasant smell of freshly baked goods would waft through the air, signaling our approach to Aunt Lucille’s warm and welcome home . As the famous biscuits attracted us, my sister and I, unable to contain our excitement, would repeatedly ask, “Are we there yet ”
At home, we were accustomed to sandwiches, but Aunt Lucille’s biscuits were a different kind of glee. After eating every last biscuit, we came to the backyard where the night sky unfolded above us. There, we gathered around, drinking sweet tea, as the melodic sound of guitars by Henri and Beau created a symphony that resonated with the love and unity of our family. These evenings were more than just a break from the routine; they were a celebration of our bond.
As the years went by, these gatherings became a place where we could escape the worries of the world and simply be with one another. The stories shared, the laughter, and the quiet moments of connection have left an indelible mark on my heart. They have taught me the importance of cherishing the time we have with our loved ones, for these are the moments that truly matter in life. The impact of these family times is great and I will always cherish it and try my best to pass it on to future generations.
24.What is mentioned about the family gathering in paragraph 1
A.Its process. B.Its significance. C.Its reasons. D.Its contents.
25.How did the author feel when going to Aunt Lucille’s home
A.Nervous. B.Hungry. C.Angry. D.Excited.
26.What does the underlined word “glee” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Pleasure. B.Training. C.Health. D.Method.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.The Joy of Saturday Evenings B.The Influence of Childhood Life
C.The Origin of Family Traditions D.The Bright Light of Family Gatherings
Animals have developed many impressive skills to sleep under tough conditions. Some seals sleep while they hunt on the sea floor. Frigate birds sleep in the air during long flights. Now, a new study finds that reindeer (驯鹿) can sleep while eating.
Reindeer live in the far North. There, the sun can shine around the clock in summer and food is plentiful. Reindeer get busy eating it and chewing (咀嚼) the cud (反刍的食物). Finding time to sleep among all the cud chewing might be tough. But what if the reindeer could sleep as they chew To check this, neuroscientist Melanie Furrer and chronobiologist Sara Meier stuck electrodes on reindeer.
Electrodes detected brain waves typical of non-REM (rapid eye movement) sleep when the reindeer were chewing cud. The reindeer’s chewing motion made it hard to tell whether the signal was like that of regular sleep. “We couldn’t go into detail by looking only at the brain waves, because this chewing disturbs them,” says Furrer.
Other signs, however, helped confirm the reindeer really were asleep. “For one thing, the reindeer were calm while chewing. In fact, they often had their eyes closed. They were in a very relaxed state that resembles the body position of non-REM sleep,” Furrer notes.
Chewing reindeer were also harder to disturb. They were less likely to look over at noise made by a nearby reindeer. Plus, when the reindeer were kept awake, they needed catch-up recovery sleep. But time spent chewing decreased how much time they spent in recovery sleep.
Together, these evidences show that reindeer can sleep while chewing, says neurobiologist Niels Rattenborg. Some animals, such as dolphins, sleep with only one side of their brain at a time. But reindeer seem to sleep with both sides of their brains while chewing. “Studying various forms of sleep might lead to insights on sleep walking in people,” Rattenborg says. “This is a poorly understood and potentially dangerous sleep disorder.”
28.How does the text introduce its topic
A.By making contrasts. B.By giving examples.
C.By discussing issues. D.By interpreting reasons.
29.Why do reindeer sleep while eating according to the text
A.They have a little food. B.They save time to observe.
C.They have no time to sleep. D.They have difficulty in sleeping.
30.What does Furrer think can prove reindeer are sleeping
A.Their brain waves. B.Their relaxed state.
C.Their chewing motion. D.Their eye movement.
31.What do Rattenborg’s words stress
A.The key to solving sleep walking. B.The danger caused by a sleep disorder.
C.The benefit of researching animals’ sleep. D.The need to study animals’ brains while they chew.
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.
Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California’s (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily recognize cancerous growths in the breast.
Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He says, “This data helps the machine learn. You can put the data into machines and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that is important to making decisions.”
David Agus is another USC researcher. He believes that machines are not going to take the place of doctors. He says, “Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can’t recognize by itself.”
Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cells. That process could take days or even longer. Scientists say AI can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes.
Agus adds, “All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time. We didn’t have the computing power to do this several years ago, but now it’s all changed.”
The USC’s researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict AI will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer.
32.What is the key to the learning of AI according to the text
A.The input of data. B.The patterns of machines.
C.Computers’ recognition ability. D.Scientists’ continuous research.
33.What is the advantage of AI in identifying cancer compared to traditional practices
A.It will cost less money. B.It will become more effective.
C.It will relieve patients’ suffering. D.It will correct personal mistakes.
34.What does Agus think of the technology
A.It’s satisfactory. B.It’s worrying. C.It’s complex. D.It’s conventional.
35.Which word can best describe the technology
A.User-friendly. B.Integrated. C.Promising. D.Challenging.
If you’ve recently made a new friend, you might be considering asking them to hang out. 36 Even though it feels scary at first, asking someone to hang out doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are some tips to help you make invitations without feeling embarrassed.
Assess whether or not they’re interested. Not being sure if someone wants to hang out with you is probably one of the main reasons you’re nervous about asking them. You can use some open-ended invitations to assess their interest. Try saying something like “When are you usually free ” or “ 37 ”.
Choose the right moment. Timing is important when giving an invitation. 38 If you know they’ll have an important meeting or test, it might not be the best time to ask them to hang out. Timing your invitation around their less busy periods can increase the chances of a positive response.
39 If you really want to invite someone to hang out with you, you need to know them better. You can ask open-ended questions that encourage them to talk about their interest and hobbies. For instance, you can ask about their favorite books, movies, or music genres. Creating an invitation that resonates (共鸣) with their interest significantly boosts the chances of receiving a favorable response.
Don’t feel offended if they say no. Keep in mind that not everyone you’ll ask to hang out with you will say yes. 40 If and when this happens, it is very important for you to not take this personally. Don’t get angry if they say no. Instead, just smile it off and understand.
A.Understand their interest.
B.Do you want to hang out sometime
C.Tell them what you like and when you’re free.
D.Why do you dislike watching movies with me
E.Try to find out when the person has more free time.
F.Some of them will reject your invitation for some reasons.
G.Asking someone to hang out is a big step to start a new friendship.

A special gift to settle embarrassment
Jon can be a forgetful kid. When he forgets his pajamas (睡衣) for the visit to the family cottage, he knows it will ruin the tradition of the annual Christmas morning photo.
Last year on their family trip to his uncle’s cottage for Christmas, he had forgotten the bag with the toiletries (洗漱用品) in it. Neither he nor his brother had toothbrushes or toothpaste or shampoo. He’d had to borrow from his cousins who were not thrilled to share, and Jon was not too thrilled that his hair smelled like strawberries all week.
The year before, Jon had left some special made food at home, so when it was time to taste the food and enjoy the get-together, they had to bite what was not suitable and fresh instead. His cousins laughed at him about that.
And now, Jon couldn’t believe he had forgotten to pack his pajamas. At home, that wouldn’t really be a problem; he had extra pajamas. But at the cottage, there were photographs dating back for years and years of Jon’s family on Christmas morning in front of the tree in their pajamas. Jon was feeling awful. He would be the first one to break the family tradition ever. Would he ruin Christmas for everyone What could he do
He didn’t want to tell his parents. He went looking around the cottage, and found an old T-shirt. That could work. He tried putting it on, but it was too small. He tried to stretch it, but it must have been washed 100 times, and it ripped (撕破) when he pulled on it.
At this point, Jon was getting desperate. He searched his brother’s luggage, trying to find some spare pajamas, only to find himself in trouble when his older brother caught him and screamed. His brother hated it when Jon messed with his stuff. Then his brother told their parents. Jon’s parents listened quietly.

W: Good morning, and welcome to Scholastic House. I am glad to introduce you the history of our college and some of the traditions. The idea for Scholastic House was put forward by Samuel Wells in 1898. Wells died in 1900 before he could see the college in operation. Scholastic House finally began operating in 1903 with ten students. These students went on to make their differences. Three became political leaders; three became doctors; the most famous graduate became a university professor and was responsible for the introduction of modern teaching methods in his country. Scholastic House debate and discussion nights were open to the public in 1927, and have been available to anyone who wishes to attend ever since. It is a proud tradition of the college that any view can be expressed. Over the years, various topics at the time have been discussed. It is your responsibility to continue the tradition of Scholastic House. I expect you to spend your time here wisely, and I hope that I will hear many well-informed debates from you.

根据文章第一段“Some seals sleep while they hunt on the sea floor. Frigate birds sleep in the air during long flights. Now, a new study finds that reindeer (驯鹿) can sleep while eating.(有些海豹在海底捕食时睡觉。军舰鸟在长途飞行时在空中睡觉。现在,一项新的研究发现,驯鹿可以边吃边睡觉)”可知,第一段分别列举了海豹和军舰鸟的例子,目的是为了引出文章的话题:驯鹿可以边吃边睡。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Reindeer live in the far North. There, the sun can shine around the clock in summer and food is plentiful. Reindeer get busy eating it and chewing (咀嚼) the cud (反刍的食物). Finding time to sleep among all the cud chewing might be tough. But what if the reindeer could sleep as they chew (驯鹿生活在遥远的北方。在那里,夏天太阳可以全天候照耀,食物充足。驯鹿忙着吃并咀嚼反刍的食物。在这些反刍食物的咀嚼中找时间睡觉可能很难。但是如果驯鹿在咀嚼的时候可以睡觉呢)”可知,驯鹿生活在北方,那里夏季食物丰富,驯鹿忙着吃,没有时间睡觉,只能边吃边睡。故选C。
30.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Other signs, however, helped confirm the reindeer really were asleep. “For one thing, the reindeer were calm while chewing. In fact, they often had their eyes closed. They were in a very relaxed state that resembles the body position of non-REM sleep,” Furrer notes.(然而,其他的迹象帮助证实了驯鹿真的在睡觉。“首先,驯鹿在咀嚼时很平静。事实上,他们经常闭着眼睛。他们处于一种非常放松的状态,类似于非快速眼动睡眠的身体姿势,”Furrer指出)”可知,驯鹿在咀嚼时很平静,闭着眼睛,处于一种非常放松的状态,这类似于睡觉姿势,表明他们在睡觉。故选B。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““Studying various forms of sleep might lead to insights on sleep walking in people,” Rattenborg says. “This is a poorly understood and potentially dangerous sleep disorder.”(Rattenborg说:“研究不同形式的睡眠可能会让我们对人的梦游有更深刻的认识。

根据第三段中“This data helps the machine learn. You can put the data into machines and they will learn the patterns and the pattern recognition that is important to making decisions. (这些数据有助于机器学习。你可以把数据输入机器,它们会学习模式和模式识别,这对决策很重要)”可知,数据帮助机器识别模式并做出决策。由此可知,人工智能学习的关键在于数据的输入。故选A项。
根据第五段中“That process could take days or even longer. Scientists say AI can do something better than just count cells. Through machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick identification of cancer that is free of human mistakes. (这个过程可能需要几天甚至更长时间。科学家表示,人工智能可以做比数细胞更好的事情。通过机器学习,它可以识别复杂的模式或结构,并了解细胞是如何组织的。人们希望,机器很快就能在没有人类错误的情况下快速识别癌症)”可知,人工智能不仅可以计数细胞,还能学习识别复杂的模式,并快速识别癌症,避免人为错误。这表明人工智能在识别癌症方面比传统方法更有效率。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中Agus所说的话“Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for things that the human brain can’t recognize by itself. (计算机不会治疗病人,但它们会帮助做出某些决定,并寻找人类大脑自身无法识别的东西)”和第六段中Agus所说的话“All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time. We didn’t have the computing power to do this several years ago, but now it’s all changed. (突然之间,我们就有了实时计算的能力。几年前我们还没有计算能力做到这一点,但现在一切都变了)”可知,Agus承认这项技术可以辅助医生做决策,其计算能力非常强大。这表明他对这项技术是满意的态度。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“The USC’s researchers are now only studying breast cancer. But doctors predict AI will one day make a difference in all forms of cancer. (南加州大学的研究人员现在只研究乳腺癌。但医生预测,人工智能总有一天会对所有类型的癌症产生影响)”可知,人工智能技术被描述为能够帮助医生更好地理解和治疗癌症,尤其是在识别癌症方面具有显著优势,研究人员对人工智能在癌症治疗中的未来应用充满希望。因此,这项技术很有前景。故选C项。

【导语】本文为一篇说明文,介绍了几个向别人发出邀请的小技巧。
36.前文“If you’ve recently made a new friend, you might be considering asking them to hang out.(如果你最近交了一个新朋友,你可能会考虑邀请他们一起出去玩)”引出交了新朋友邀请朋友出去游玩的话题,后文“Even though it feels scary at first, asking someone to hang out doesn’t have to be stressful.(尽管一开始感觉很可怕,但邀请别人出去玩并不一定要有压力)”表明邀请新朋友出去游玩感觉是可怕的,但是也可以克服,G选项“约某人出去玩是开始一段新友谊的重要一步”承上启下,表明邀请游玩的重要性,同时引出下文这很可怕,但是不应该有压力。故选G。
37.前文“You can use some open-ended invitations to assess their interest.(你可以用一些开放式的邀请来评估他们的兴趣)”及“When are you usually free (你通常什么时候有空)”可知,空处应该也为开放式的邀请,B选项“你想找个时间一起出去玩吗”符合句式及语境。故选B。
39.空处为本段的主旨句,后文“You can ask open-ended questions that encourage them to talk about their interest and hobbies.(你可以问一些开放式的问题,鼓励他们谈论他们的兴趣和爱好)”及“Creating an invitation that resonates (共鸣) with their interest significantly boosts the chances of receiving a favorable response.(制作一份能引起他们兴趣的邀请函,会大大增加收到积极回应的可能性)”可知,本段主要讲要根据对方的兴趣发出邀请,所以A选项“了解他们的兴趣”符合主旨。故选A。
40.前文“Keep in mind that not everyone you’ll ask to hang out with you will say yes.(记住,并不是每个你邀请的人都会答应你)”及后文“If and when this happens, it is very important for you to not take this personally.(如果发生这种情况,不要把它当作针对你个人的,这一点很重要)”可知,不是所有人都会同意你的邀请,有的人会拒绝,空处应表示这一点,F选项“有些人会因为某些原因拒绝你的邀请”符合上下文。故选F。

The value of failure
The value of failure lies in the fact that it is not just a setback but an extremely valuable teacher. It is a mirror that clearly shows our weaknesses and points the way for our improvement.
What we should do when faced with failure is to maintain a positive attitude. We need to thoroughly analyze the reasons which lead to the failure and extract precious lessons from it. Only by doing so can we turn failure into a solid stepping stone on the path of our journey towards success, making us become stronger and more capable individuals.
67.They were not angry at him for not bringing pajamas. Instead, they comforted him and told him not to worry. His father said they would find a way to solve the problem. His mother thought for a while and then had an idea. She went to her suitcase and took out a pair of her pajamas. Although they were a bit big for Jon, it was better than nothing. His mother kindly smiled and said, “Dear, this will do for now. Let’s make the best of it.” Jon felt a wave of relief but also a tinge of guilt for causing this trouble.
When morning came, the family gathered around the Christmas tree, all in pajamas except for Jon. But just as they were about to take the photo, his brother came up to him and handed him a special gift. It was a new pair of pajamas. His brother said he had bought it for him as a surprise. Jon’s eyes widened in astonishment and joy. His heart filled with warmth and gratitude. Jon quickly put on the pajamas and joined the family for the photo. It was a Christmas morning filled with love, understanding, and unexpected surprises, a moment to remember forever.
