While most children struggle to form full sentences until they’re three or four, three-year-old Master Caleb Stewart was delivering speeches with more enthusiasm than a TED Talk. Now eleven years old, Caleb became the youngest motivational speaker (male) at the age of three, when he gave his first speech on the importance of self-belief.
It was at the ALARM International Church in Tallahassee, and the young Master of Reading remembers his first speech fondly: “Everyone stood up for me and I felt proud of myself. It felt really good to see how I made an impact and inspired everyone.”
Ever since that first experience, Caleb has continued to speak to schools, churches, and community leaders about topics ranging from dreaming big and believing in yourself to the importance of literacy and reading fluency. He made his second speech at Raa Middle School where, as a keynote speaker at a teacher training event, he stood on a table and spoke to the staff about the benefits of reading and having big dreams. A video of this speech became popular.
Caleb writes his own speeches by picking a topic, breaking his thoughts into sections, and then putting them together to study. His key recommendations for a great speech are: “Be confident, be calm, and if you mess up, keep going. Speak loud and clear.”
He is a passionate reader who, in his own words, “reads at every opportunity he gets”. When he was seven years old, after reading an article highlighting the lack of reading proficiency (能力) among today’s children, he decided that he wanted to help them improve their skills. So, he set up the Master Caleb’s Discovery Library—a non-profit library through which he donates books from his personal collection, along with other learning materials, to kids in his community.
For Caleb, it’s always been a family affair—his passion for motivational speaking is not only supported but also greatly inspired by those closest to him. His favorite speaker to listen to is his uncle, while his grandmother inspires him the most and assists with his motivational speaking and academic growth.

5. What can be inferred about Caleb’s second speech at Raa Middle School
A. It was delivered in an informal manner. B. It was poorly received by the audience.

A. To enhance kids’ reading skills. B. To compete with other libraries.
C. To earn money by selling books. D. To follow his uncle’s career path.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. The influence of family on a child’s growth. B. The challenges of early childhood education.
C. The journey of a young motivational speaker. D. The importance of speaking skills in society.

Sea turtles (海龟) have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, having survived multiple extinction events over 100 million years. But the serious effects of human activity have caused rapid population decline, and now six of the seven sea turtle species are considered threatened.
There are signs of hope through the hard work of conservationists and community-based organizations around the world. It’s what has made Trinidad and Tobago — a two-island nation — one of the most important leatherback (棱皮龟) nesting sites.
Each season, the islands’ conservation teams depend on visitors to help give these creatures a fighting chance against the many threats to their survival — including habitat destruction, climate change-caused reproductive issues, and bycatch offshore. The turtle-watching tours they run provide vital revenue to fund monitoring and conservation efforts; and volunteers — including travelers from overseas — power that work in the field.
“The number of leatherbacks nesting there — it’s almost like a mass nesting event,” says Vanessa Bezy, a wildlife conservationist from the U.S. who is working to protect sea turtles in Costa Rica. “Where I am, leatherbacks are critically endangered. I think there’s only a couple hundred left in this part of the Pacific.”
Volunteers are responsible for making Trinidad and Tobago’s humble turtle conservation a success story worldwide. They spend untold hours tagging (标记), counting, and measuring nesting mothers; monitoring and sometimes even relocating nests; and helping safeguard the turtles from natural enemies and threats. Their hard work has caused the illegal hunting of leatherbacks and taking of their eggs to fall to near zero.
That work began in 1965 through the cooperation between the University of the West Indies and the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists’ Club. In 1989, the nation’s Forestry Division developed a co-management partnership with the rural communities where turtles nest, helping them grow to lead the conservation effort in the decades that followed. Today, twenty-eight of these groups form the Turtle Village Trust.
8. What is stated about sea turtles in paragraph 1
A. They have increased greatly. B. Most of them are threatened.
C. They live mainly on the island. D. Their habitats remain unaffected.
9. What does the underlined word “revenue” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Data. B. Support. C. Advice. D. Income.
10. Which of the following best describes volunteers’ work
A. Debatable. B. Fruitful. C. Temporary. D. Simple.
11. What is a result of the cooperation in conserving sea turtles
A. Costs are largely reduced. B. More groups are established.
C. Illegal hunters are punished. D. Rural communities take the lead.

The unfortunate thing about parenting books is that, in my experience, once you become a parent you are too time-poor and tired to read them. As a result, my bedside table is filled with parenting books of which I’ve read the first five pages a dozen times before passing out.
If this sounds like you, the latest book by Melinda Wenner Moyer should be top of your list. Hello, Cruel World!: Science-based strategies for raising terrific kids in terrifying times is designed as a research-backed guide to help parents equip their children with the tools they need to succeed. The chapters of this book are short and readable, broken down into bite-sized sections, each giving you one piece of advice and the science to back it up. Moyer shows a lot of understanding and can help you take a kid’s-eye view on even their most annoying behaviors.
How can we get children to be more open, fair-minded and willing to consider other viewpoints One way is to encourage curiosity and uncertainty from a young age. Children, as we know, are like young scientists. “One of their most important jobs is to make sense of the world around them,” writes Moyer. This curiosity can often conflict with an adult’s desire to get things done. “When you ask your children to clean their room, then find them thirty minutes later studying an insect in the bathroom…it’s easy to dismiss their behavior as disobedience (不服从).” Their seemingly distracted (分心的) behavior is actually a natural part of their learning process. Parents should respond with empathy (同理心) and support rather than criticism.
The book also addresses important issues like the impact of technology on children. Moyer challenges common misconceptions and provides practical advice on when and how to introduce mobile phones and social media to kids. Her insights help parents deal with these complex topics with a balanced and informed opinion.
12. Why do many parents fail to finish reading parenting books
A. They lack time and energy. B. They lose interest in reading.
C. They find the books to be of poor quality. D. They prioritize practical tasks over reading.
13. What is the feature of Hello, Cruel World!
A. Theoretical. B. Science-backed. C. Complicated. D. Experience-based.
14. What should parents do when their children are studying an insect
A. Dismiss their behaviors. B. Correct their distraction.
C. Encourage their curiosity. D. Ask them to follow instructions.
15. What is this text
A. A book review. B. A writing guide. C. A parenting paper. D. A science report.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I have always done exactly what I wanted. That is why I find myself on a facial recognition website looking for a bus driver I met when I was 14. My mother and I had come to Los Angeles for vacation. This was the first time I’d ever left Texas, and the first time I’d been on an airplane.
I don’t recall the tour, but I remember the guide and the bus driver, John. He told great stories and, most of all, he noticed me. John talked to me as if I was my own person, not just some star-eyed kid from a small town, but a human with thoughts and ideas of her own. When I asked a question, he gave me a real answer — more than an answer, an elaboration (阐述).
I don’t recall how we started talking. Maybe John asked what I liked, and I said music. Before this trip, I was shy and quiet. I was bad at sports, an average student, but good at French horn (圆号). Still, I didn’t see a clear future.
Throughout the tour, John talked to me about my musical interests and told me about the paths and possibilities I hadn’t yet been able to see. If I enjoyed playing music enough to want to do it all the time, then why didn’t I just do that It had never occurred to me, this sense of huge possibility, that I could just do whatever I wanted.
When the tour ended, John and I stood outside the bus and took a picture with my camera. At home, I put that little photo in a prime spot on my wall. It encouraged me to pursue my dream. I got into music school and music ultimately became my path.
Twenty years later, I was talking with my friend when the memory of John and that bus tour came out of the back of my mind.
“The man literally changed the course of my life,” I said. “I’ve always wanted to find him.”
“You’d better get on it, then,” my friend laughed.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Later that week, I found a facial recognition website and uploaded my photo.

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. A

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Later that week, I found a facial recognition website and uploaded my photo. Then a possible match popped up. To my immense joy, it was indeed John! There was his familiar smile, just as I remembered it. I quickly sent him a message, introducing myself and expressing my deep gratitude for the impact he had made on my life. To my surprise, he replied almost immediately, saying he was thrilled to hear from me and that he had always remembered that little girl with a passion for music.
We arranged to meet, and when we finally did, it was like no time had passed. As soon as our eyes met, we both burst into laughter. We sat down at a cozy café, chatting away like old friends. John listened intently as I told him about my music career and the challenges I had faced along the way. He nodded with understanding and offered words of wisdom and encouragement. I realized then that John was one of those special people who had left an indelible mark on my heart.
