“May we all be blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟),” wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.
The moon is at its brightest on the 15thday of the eight month of the lunar calendar. On this day, people celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country.
In ancient China, that day was a harvest festival because crops (庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was also a time for relaxation and celebration.
Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.

With most people staying at home due to COVID-19, livestreaming (直播) has become more and more popular. It is not only enjoyable, but has also provided a new stage for traditional culture artists.
On video sites (网站) and apps such as Douyin and Bilibili, many traditional artists are trying livestreaming for the first time. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some show their artworks, while others perform calligraphy (书法) or classical Chinese music.
Li Jun is a laosheng (old male role) Peking opera performer from the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. During the outbreak, the 59-year-old started livestreaming for the first time. Unlike performing on a theater stage, Li uses everyday places as his stage, including his backyard, study room, and even a treadmill (跑步机). Besides singing, li also teaches viewers about Peking Opera in a humorous way.
“Livestreaming has brought this elegant (高雅的) art down to earth,” one viewer said.
“It allows young people to have easier chances to this traditional art and learn more about it.” Up to now Li has more than 6,000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos has received 42,000 views on Bilibili.
Other kinds of artists also see livestreaming as a new opportunity. On March 26th the third China Huafu Day, Bilibili livestreamed a fashion show. Performers presented beautiful clothes in traditional Chinese styles, including those from the Wei, Tang and Ming dynasties. During the show viewers not only enjoyed seeing the clothes but also watched how performers used ancient styles of make-up. For example, one blogger taught people how to draw the guiye eyebrow (桂叶眉), which was a typical make-up style during the Tang Dynasty.
As Guangming Daily noted, livestreaming has created a new way through which traditional culture can be kept alive.

You may have already forgotten the days when you had to learn how to use chopsticks. Every Chinese kid struggles with them for some time. But chopsticks are not just simple tools to pick up food. They come with their own special rules and traditions. Let’s learn the rules and traditions behind chopsticks.
Generally, people should not make noise with chopsticks. Playing with chopsticks is seen as bad manners, just as playing with forks and knives in a Western country would be rude. There are also some superstitions(迷信 ) related to chopsticks. For example, some people believe that chopsticks should not be left standing upright in a bowl. It looks like the incense (香 )that Chinese use to honor(祭奠 )the dead. Doing it at the dinner table is believed to bring bad luck.
You should not tap chopsticks on the edge of the bowl either, as beggars(乞丐)do this to ask for food. Parents might get angry if children do this as they don’t want their children to be as poor as beggars in the future.
Chopsticks can also be a great gift. In Chinese, “chopsticks” are known as “kuaizi”, which means to have babies soon. Newlyweds( 新 婚夫妇 )sometimes receive chopsticks as a wedding gift. Skilled craftsmen( 手艺人 )paint beautiful images on chopsticks to make them look like fine artwork.

Where do the colors of your clothes come from The answer is dye(染料). The clothes we wear these days are mainly dyed with chemicals in factories. But in the past, people did this by hand and the dyes often came from plants. In 2006, the tie-dye technique(扎染技艺)was added to China’s national intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)list.
Yang Cheng, 52, is the inheritor(传承人)of tie-dye in An’ning, Yunnan. He learned the skill from his mother in the 1980s. And he has passed it down to his daughter.
Yang has known about all the old skills of tie-dye. To tie-dye, you first need to use threads(线)to tie your cloth together. Then you put the cloth into the dye. As the cloth is folded(折叠)and dyed, some parts become dark blue, while other parts have a lighter color. When you unfold the cloth, you’ll see beautiful patterns.
At the same time, Yang has studied tie-dye in other countries, such as Japan, India and France. He also tries to make some creative designs.
He once made two sets of tie-dyed wedding dresses. He used almost all the skills of An’ning tie-dye. Some patterns on the dresses are traditional such as small fish roes(鱼卵), while others are modern. He added Dianchi Lake and eight popular flowers in Yunnan.
“Now, Yang teaches tie-dye in schools, communities and companies. More than 100,000 people have learned from him,” he said.
Some might worry that the machinery dyeing will take the place of tie-dye. But Yang is confident. “At the end of the day, machines can’t replace our creative hands,” Yang said.

22.How long has the tie-dye technique been added to national intangible cultural heritage list
23.How did Yang Chen learn tie-dye

Have you ever tasted a kind of snack, which is also of the traditional Chinese of forms of art—sugar painting.
Sugar painting started from the Ming Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, many people made a living through sugar painting, setting up stalls(货摊)in crowded streets, in front of theatres and busy public places. And now it can still be found in many areas of China.
The sugar painters usually sit before a wooden table. On the side, there is a wooden plate with a revolvable arrow(可旋转箭头)on it. The plate is painted with different pictures such as a dragon, a bird, a flower and so on. After paying, the customers turn the arrow and wait till it stops. The picture pointed by the arrow is the one the painters will make.
Sugar painting is very different from normal painting. The sugar painters use syrup(糖浆)as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth slab(台面)as the “paper”. To make the syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since the syrup may become solid(固体的)if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of the syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, a flower or a bike is done.
The number of sugar painters is getting smaller. However, some of them still insist on this art. They make their efforts to hold different activities such as offering classes and giving speeches. Now, sugar painting has already been listed as National Non-Material Culture Heritage.

Western fashion and modern designs have been popular in China in recent years, but a growing number of young people are now looking to the past for fashion advice.
If you look closely around your city, you might see hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han dynasty. In a recently published report by online shopping website Tmall, more than 2 million hanfu were sold in 2020. The number of hanfu buyers increased by 92 percent compared to 2019. The average age of buyers was 21, with about 52 percent between 19 and 24 years old.
But why has this traditional clothing become popular among young Chinese people
For some of them, it’s a costurme for relaxation. Wang Kehan, a 24-year-old college student, said that dressing in hanfu is a way for her to escape the trouble of real life. Modern clothing, on the other hand, represents the identity (身份) people need to show every day.
“Hanfu and modern clothing help me to show the different sides in me,” she explained.
Other young people like hanfu because of the culture behind it. They regard it as a way to reconnect with traditions. Its wide sleeves (袖子) , crossed collars and flowing robes (飘带) bring people back to ancient times.
“What’s behind hanfu is the deep Chinese tradition,” said Zhou Yihao, a 21-year-old costurme studio owner.
That’s probably why some fans have started to bring the traditional clothing abroad. Sohu reported on a Bilibili vlogger who climbed Germany’s highest mountain wearing hanfu. She received praise from tourists.
Maybe in the future, hanfu will have more and more fans.

The proper placement of each tiny Go piece is nearly the same as how one might solve a difficult problem in life.
Go carries deeper cultural and competitive meanings. Different from chess and Chinese chess, in the game of Go, the players do not wipe out (消灭) each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing the other side some space. The one who forces the other side into a dead corner wins the game.
A modern Go talent in China once believed that the final purpose of the game was to achieve peace. Instead of fighting as enemies, the two players work together and play an excellent game.
