Not long ago, the movie adaptation of Tiger Eyes aired on TV. It's about Davey, a Jersey girl whose father was shot and killed one summer night. Then, she moved along with her mom and younger brother to New Mexico to recover in the home of her very controlling aunt and uncle. Davey. started hanging out in a canyon(峡谷) to escape the discomfort at her aunt's, and that was where' she' met' Wolf, a mysterious, slightly older guy. He became a friend and guide as she eased her sadness and gained confidence.
I hadn't seen this movie before. I'd say it's in my top five of beloved book adaptations.Surprisingly, my favorite scene was one that wasn't in the book. Wolf brought Davey to a tribal(部落的) ceremony. During the party, one of the leaders brought him into the center of the bonfire(篝火)circle. The tribe was aware that Wolf was facing the loss of a family member, and the leader told him that he had everyone's support and was not alone. He put a feather in Wolf's hair as a symbol of his life,to remind him that he was alive despite his suffering. Then he laid hands on him and sang a blessing over him.
This scene deeply stirred me. So often in our communities, we claim to be there for each other and even pray together, but I think there's something powerful about making a ceremony of that support. I'm not saying we should make a bonfire circle every time someone has a bad day, but maybe there are more present, earthy ways to express love and encouragement.
I'm going to reflect on this. Sometimes a simple hug or a touch on the back is more comforting than a lot of good words. So many of us are constantly running a lack of touch, and it's not only the single people.
24. What do we know about Davey's experiences
A. She saw her father being shot. B. She hated the air at her aunt's.
C. She got on badly with her brother. D. She sought for a sense of mystery.
25. What did the tribal leader teach Wolf
A. The basis of trust. B. The nature of life.
C. The power of community. D. The importance of family.
26. What does the underlined word“stirred” mean in paragraph 3
A. Moved. B. Humbled. C. Annoyed. D. Frightened.
27. How can we comfort others according to the author
A. By seeing from their sides. B. By saying inspiring words.
C. By offering practical advice. D. By valuing physical contact.
C
Parkinson's law states:“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, things become harder to complete when more time is given to complete them as the build-up to the task becomes stressful and frightening.
Parkinson's law is not a scientific principle. Instead, it is simply an observation of a phenomenon many people including scientists have experienced rather than dug into. As first described by CyrilNorthcote Parkinson in a 1955 humor essay published in The Economist, it can explain the expansion of organizations. However, it can also be a helpful way to think about other types of work, including personal productivity.
The complexity of a task tends to grow when more time is distributed for its completion. When you find yourself finishing the task, you might feel a sense of relief but also wonder why the project became so much more of a burden in your mind than it was in real life. The“extra time” that the task requires often isn't related to the task itself—— it's mental stress caused by worrying about getting it done.
In Parkinson's original example, a woman's task for the day was just to mail a postcard. As a result of having the entire day to complete the simple task, the amount of work and time required expanded to fill the whole day. The fictional woman spent a half-hour searching for her reading glasses. Writing the. postcard took another two hours. More time was spent finding a stamp, writing the address, and walking“the postcard to the post office.
One reason why this phenomenon happens lies in how people tend to approach tasks. Research indicates that when people start a new project, they tend to focus on how much time they have available to do it instead of how much time the task would take to complete. While Parkinson's law is a phenomenon that can lead to wasted time and inefficient work, it doesn't have to be a problem if you' re aware of it.
28. Why does Parkinson's law fail to be a scientific principle
A. It lacks profound research. B. It serves certain enterprises.
C. It has shallow implications. D. It aims to uncover an issue.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss about Parkinson's law
A. Its present situation. B. Its underlying logic.
C. Its mental influence. D. Its unnoticed worth.
30. What does Parkinson's original example imply
A. Looking for glasses didn't matter. B. Mailing a postcard took two hours.
C. Categorizing tasks consumed time. D. Task expands to fill available time.
31. What might be discussed in the follow-up text
A. Views on deadline setting. B. Modes of task assignment.
C. Difficulties in high outputs. D. Tips for time management.
D
Wildfires are becoming increasingly common due to hotter and drier climates around the world.Until now, firefighters have had to rely on satellite imagery that's either low-resolution or only updated a few times a day, not to mention spotting small fires. Google Research has teamed up with leaders in the fire community to create FireSat——a purpose-built constellation(星座) of satellites designed specifically to detect and track wildfires as small as a classroom. With FireSat, authorities will have high-resolution imagery that is updated globally every 20 minutes, helping them respond to fires before they become destructive.
Using AI, FireSat will rapidly compare any 5×5-meter spot on earth with previous imagery, while also combining factors like nearby infrastructure(基础设施) and local weather, to determine if there's a fire. To check our detection model for smaller fires and establish a baseline dataset for the AI, we flew the sensors over controlled burns. Google Research team has cooperated with Muon Space to achieve this breakthrough. Muon Space launched the first satellite in early 2025, with the full constellation to follow in the coming years.
Once launched, FireSat will provide near real-time information about the location, size and intensity of early-stage wildfires so firefighters and emergency responders can respond quickly and effectively. In addition to supporting emergency response efforts, FireSat's data will be used to create a global historical record of fire spread, helping Google and scientists to better model and understand wildfire spread.
This will expand our existing work on fire simulation(模拟) in partnership with scientists in theU. S. Forest Service. This project is the latest addition to Google Research's ongoing efforts to help communities around the world address the impacts of climate change. Since 2020, we' ve used AI models to surface warnings and features that provide helpful information to people who are near a wildfire through wildfire boundary tracking, which is now available in over 20 countries. Earlier, we also released FireBench, an open-source ML benchmark dataset for wildfi re research.
32. What is the drawback of the previous satellite imagery
A. It is updated once every few months.
B. It cannot detect minor or small fires.
C. It cannot assess the severity of fires.
D. It is designed for military purposes.
33. What will FireSat do to boost its effectiveness
A. Study past fire frequency. B. Monitor human activities.
C. Identify controlled burns. D. Check mixed information.
34. What can FireSat do to help scientists
A. Show wildfire behavior modes. B. Predict wildfire spread routes.
C. Explore causes behind wildfires. D. Record firefighters' responses to dangers.
35. What is the function of the last paragraph
A. To detail fire detection history.
B. To inform Google's new plans.
C. To extend project connections.
D. To stress FireSat's leading role.

Desertification is a serious problem across the African continent. 36 Large parts of Africa experience a rather hot and dry climate. Ever-growing populations are also increasing the needs of overgrazing(过度放牧), agriculture and deforestation, which degrade the land even further.
37 It covers many areas of mostly savannah(稀树草原) land that already borders existing deserts. The Sahel region, which is stretched out along the southern side of the Sahara Desert, is one of these areas.
However, not all deserts are near the Sahel region. 38 The same goes for the areas surrounding the Kalahari and Namibian Deserts. Apart from the deserts of Africa, the savannah areas also form a vast network of dryland environments, which are becoming increasingly sensitive due to climate change.
Human activities worsen the issue of desertification in Africa even further. Overgrazing, negative agricultural practices and deforestation are three large contributors, all of which are encouraged by a growing population. 39 Planting and growing crops contribute towards around one-fifth of desertification in Africa. Growing crops and tilling the soil means that topso il is easily eroded(腐蚀) by both the wind and the rain.
Deforestation also has a negative impact and severe consequences for desertification. Some savannah areas are occupied by pockets of woodland such as Acacia thickets. These are often cleared for firewood, and this deforestation leads to desertification. Planting trees is an important part of the solution to prevent further desertification in Africa. 40
A. Human-land conflict seems easy to deal with.
B. Desertification usually results from deforestation.
C. Climate and human factors are the two main drivers.
D. Africa's desertification has a clear geographic pattern.
E. Eastern Africa, including Kenya, also faces desertification.
F. Many people live in poverty, relying on the land to survive.
G. Environmentally-friendly agricultural approaches also matter.

Mrs. Wilson had just taken over Class 438 as their new homeroom teacher. As she reviewed the students’ academic records, one name caught her attention—— Peter Johnson. His grades had been consistently excellent until a sudden decline began exactly one year ago. Puzzled, Mrs. Wilson observedPeter closely in class. To her surprise, he always listened attentively and participated actively, yet his recent test scores remained terrible. Determined to uncover the truth, she decided to pay a home visit.
One afternoon, Mrs. Wilson reached an old apartment building. The door was opened by an underweight woman sitting on a wheelchair. “I'm Peter's mother,” she said, her voice weak. Inside,Mrs. Wilson saw a tiny and messy room with medical supplies scattered(散落) over it.
Over a cup of tea, Mrs. Wilson learned the heartbreaking story. Peter's father had passed away three years ago, leaving his mother to raise him alone. Just a year prior, she had suffered a severe heart disease that left her partially paralyzed(瘫痪的). Since then, Peter had been balancing school with full-time caregiving. “I try to study after Mom falls asleep,” he whispered, “but by then I'm so exhausted that I can hardly keep my eyes open.”
Mrs. Wilson's heart ached as she left. That night, she drafted a letter to the class, explainingPeter's situation in the hope of students' help to him. The response was positive. Students advised taking turns tutoring Peter, while others planned to organize a bake sale to raise funds for medical bills.Mrs. Wilson knew the real challenge lay ahead—— convincing Peter to accept their help without losing his pride.
The following Monday, Mrs. Wilson presented the class's initiative to Peter during lunch break. He lowered his head, saying, “I……I can't accept this. I don't want charity.” Mrs. Wilson placed a hand on his shoulder. “This isn't charity, Peter. It's what a family does—— they support each other.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
With tears in his eyes, Peter nodded hesitantly.
Both Peter and his mother's conditions improved.

W: So Andy, you' ve started university in China. How do you find the university life there
M: Well, it's totally different from that in the USA. Here. there are more well-organized group activities. They' re challenging but meaningful!
W: Come on, tell me more details.
M: Okay. For one thing, the class schedule is fixed, unlike in the U. S. where we choose our own timings. I don't have early-morning classes on Monday, which is nice.
W: I see. So sleeping in is what you like most about university life in China
M: Not exactly. I don't sleep in every day. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, I get up at 7:30 because my advanced physics class starts at 8:00. It's a tough course, but I prefer mornings—— my mind is sharper then.

Text 8
W: Hi, Dan. What are you reading
M: It's an article about how people define success. Most think it's about wealth and fame, but I believe success can be small, everyday achievements—— like helping others or staying true to your values.
W: I guess so.
M: Take my grandpa as an example. After retiring from a school, he volunteers at a community center. He may not be rich or famous, but he is successful in his own way. It's sad how society overlooks people like him.
W: That's true. He sounds like one of those unsung heroes like a postman in the mountain who find fulfillment without recognition.
M: Exactly. A good life doesn't need a spolight. But nowadays, people act like success only counts if it's flashy.
W:I agree. I wouldn't admire someone just for money or fame—— real success should mean something deeper.
M: Success is personal. Sadly, society often ignores true success. Instead, people tend to regard some big achievements as real success without realizing that true success sometimes can be achieved in everyday life.
W: That's definitely right.
Text 9

M:I was just sitting on a bench reading when I noticed a small boy crying near the fountain. He looked scared.
W: What did you do next

W: I bet they were so relieved to see their son safe and sound.
M: Absolutely! They had been shopping nearby when the boy wandered off. On seeing him, they hugged him tightly and thanked me repeatedly.
W: Did they offer you anything as a gesture of gratitude
M: At first, they insisted on giving me money, but I refused. In the end, they invited me to join them for dinner.
W: That's a good job. Thank you for your act of kindness, James.

文中第一段提到“Davey started hanging out in a canyon to escape the discomfort at her aunt's”,说明她为了逃避阿姨家的不适感而常去峡谷,由此可知她不喜欢阿姨家的氛围,B项中“air”为熟词生义,译为“氛围”。故选B。
根据第二段中“the leader told him that he had everyone's support and was not alone”可知,这里强调的是社群的支持力量,体现了社群的力量。故选C。
故选A。
最后一段提到“Sometimes a simple hug or a touch on the back is more comforting than a lot ofgood words.”,这说明身体接触比话语更能安慰人,强调要重视身体上的接触。

文中第二段提到“Parkinson's law is not a scientific principle. Instead, it is simply anobservation of a phenomenon many people including scientists have experienced rather than dug into.”,说明它只是对一种常见现象的观察,而非经过深入研究得出的科学原理。故选A。
文中最后一段提到“While Parkinson’ s law is... it doesn’ t have to be a problem if you' re awareof it.”,暗示接下来可能会讨论如何应对帕金森定律,即掌握管理时间的技巧,以避免时间浪费和低效工作。

根据文中首段提到的“Until now, firefighters have had to rely on satellite imagery that's eitherlow-resolution or only updated a few times a day, not to mention spotting small fires.” 而 FireSat 的优势是“detect and track wildfires as small as a classroom”,说明原有卫星图像的缺陷是无法检测小型火灾。故选B。
第二段提到“Using AI, FireSat will rapidly compare any 5×5-meter spot on earth with previousimagery, while also combining factors like nearby infrastructure and local weather, to determine if there's a fire.”,说明 FireSat 通过对比历史图像并结合附近基础设施、当地天气等多种信息来工作,即通过整合混合信息来提升效率。故选D。
第三段提到“FireSat's data will be used to create a global historical record of fire spread, helping Google and scientists to better model and understand wildfire spread”,即FireSat 的数据将被用来创建火灾蔓延的全球历史记录,帮助谷歌和科学家更好地模拟和理解野火蔓延的方式,说明它可以帮助深入了解野火的行为模式。故选A。
最后一段提到“This will expand our existing work on fire simulation... Since 2020, we' ve usedAI models...

One possible version:
With tears in his eyes, Peter nodded hesitantly. The next day, when he walked into the classroom, he found several classmates waiting with their notebooks. “We thought you might need help with last week's math problems,”said Lily, smiling warmly. At first, Peter was awkward, but as they explained concepts patiently, he gradually relaxed, asking questions he'd bottled up for months. After school, some students visited his home to help clean, while others brought homemade meals. Peter even joined the bake sale planning, offering to design posters. His artistic skills, long neglected, shone through.
Both Peter and his mother's conditions improved. With classmates tutoring him after school, Peter no longer stayed up late struggling alone. His test scores climbed steadily, and his cycs regained their former brightness. His mother, moved by the students’ kindness, grew more optimistic, sticking to her recovery exercises diligently. One day, she managed to stand again. At the end-of-term cercmony, Peter received an award for“Most Courageous Student”. “Icouldn't have done it without my amazing class, " he said. The classroom had truly become a family, proving that love and support can turn hardship into hope.
