College fly-in programs are opportunities for high school students to visit colleges over the course of a few days and meet students from all around the world with various interests. The visit is at no cost to the student.

Many people assume that siblings naturally grow up to be close, but for me, that wasn’t the case. When I was seven, I moved from London to Florida with my two sisters, while my four brothers stayed behind. We didn’t reunite until I was seventeen. The long separation and lack of communication caused our bond to fade completely.
This emotional distance still affects me. I feel grief when I see other families enjoying sibling vacations or holiday jokes. I’ve come to understand that our broken relationships were caused by family changes, poor communication, and favoritism (偏袒) — experiences that are common for many. Therapist (治疗专家) Phebe Brako-Owusu explains that sudden family shifts without explanation or emotional support can seriously hurt children. Favoritism, too, can damage sibling trust and create pressure, even for the so-called “favorite” child.
Understanding the causes helped, but healing didn’t begin until I started therapy. Therapy helped me recognize how not having my feelings understood led to bitterness and silence. It also helped me take responsibility for my role in these conflicts and show empathy toward my siblings’ experiences. Experts suggest doing personal work before trying to reconnect with siblings, and if you do choose to talk, use “I” statements and be clear about your purpose — whether it’s trying to make peace or setting boundaries.
As a parent now, I reflect on how parents can prevent such issues. Brako-Owusu recommends encouraging open communication, avoiding favoritism, and creating space for siblings to bond. Even if a relationship can’t be repaired now, it doesn’t mean it never will. I hold on to hope that someday my siblings and I may reconnect.
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A. She remained close to her brothers through letters.
B. She was excited to live in the U. S. with her sisters.
C. She never wanted to be taken away from hometown.
D. She was emotionally affected by the move at age seven.
5. Which of the following would Brako-Owusu most likely disapprove of
A. Sharing decision-making.
B. Not explaining family change.
C. Seeking for psychological help.
D. Not favoring a certain child.
6. What is advised before trying to reconnect with siblings, according to experts
A. Going through necessary self-reflection.
B. Focusing on building new family traditions.
C. Waiting for siblings to initiate the conversation.
D. Breaking down boundaries without conditions.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards repairing her relationship with her siblings
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic.
C. Indifferent. D. Reserved.

When you see robotic lawnmowers’ blades (割草机的叶片) moving fast, you are expecting a more beautiful and tidier lawn in front of your eyes. But sadly, sometimes you can see injured or even dead hedgehogs (刺猬). What a horrible scene!
Sophie Lund Rasmussen, a member of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford, carried out hedgehog crash tests to see if robotic lawnmowers were safe and found the animal was often endangered by the blades because the technology couldn’t detect it.
The sensors and cameras are typically too weak to detect hedgehogs hidden in the grass. The automatic computer-controlled lawnmowers are more dangerous to hedgehogs than human-powered machines because a person would likely discern the animal and stop.
Rasmussen hopes her tests will be known by designers to ensure robotic lawnmowers are hedgehog-safe. “This will eventually allow for a labeling system guiding the consumers into buying hedgehog-friendly robotic lawnmowers, and therefore contribute to the conservation of this declining and beloved species,” she said.
Rasmussen’s finding suggests that these deadly machines need better sensors to spot the animal and change the direction of blades to reduce harm. She added, “The next step is definitely also to apply advanced technology such as camera recognition, which will eventually allow the robotic lawnmowers to detect hedgehogs at a distance, and avoid them.”
Rasmussen tested 19 different types of robotic lawnmowers which are available to buy and found some models were safer for small hedgehogs than others. However, all of these lawnmowers had to physically interact with hedgehogs to detect them before they reacted. Her wish for future machines was that they could detect hedgehogs at a distance and change direction.
“For now, the best advice is to check the lawn for any hedgehog before starting the robotic lawnmower or to only let it run during the day as this reduces the risk of encounters with hedgehogs, which are active primarily at night,” Rasmussen said.
8. What is paragraph 1 mainly intended to show
A. Robotic lawnmowers have gained popularity. B. The number of hedgehogs is declining quickly.
C. It’s very challenging to maintain a beautiful lawn. D. Robotic lawnmowers are dangerous to hedgehogs.
9. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Spot. B. Support. C. hide. D. Protect.
10. Rasmussen hopes current robotic lawnmowers can be _________.
A. sold at a more reasonable price B. improved with high technology
C. redesigned by some animal lovers D. changed into human-powered machines
11. What is Rasmussen’s suggestion on using robotic lawnmowers
A. checking their blades first. B. Following them all the time.
C. Training them with hedgehogs. D. Avoiding using them at night.

San Pedro de Atacama, a small town in Chile’s Atacama Desert, is a busy tourist destination. Tour operators and sellers call out to visitors in English in an attempt to turn heads, before trying French, German, or Mandarin. They turn away and whisper in Spanish if they are unsuccessful.
Long before these tourists arrived, another language had been spoken in the region-Ckunsa. Once declared extinct in the 1950s, Ckunsa is still alive in the depths of the desert. “I don’t accept that my native language is extinct,” said 55-year-old Tomás Vilea. “We are going to revitalize our language. It’s not just about communication. It’s our identity.”
The Ckunsa language faced serious suppression (压制) in the 1800s when public schools were established and Spanish was made the dominant language. The Chilean government is now taking steps to help preserve native languages. A curriculum focusing on “the language and culture of ancestral peoples” has been introduced, which is taught to students in areas with significant native populations.
In recent years, local initiatives in the Atacama Desert have also aimed to restore Ckunsa. In 2022, 1,300 Ckunsa dictionaries were distributed to primary school students in San Pedro de Atacama. In the desert oasis of Calama, children are now learning the language at their school. Tomás Vilea is the Ckunsa teacher at the school, helping to pass down the language to a new generation. Although countless words have faded like stars, which is a sorrowful loss of cultural heritage, the community passionately recovers old terms from ancient songs and texts.
Vilea and others feel it is vital to preserve Ckunsa for future generations. “We’re trying to leave something behind for our children,” says teacher Ilia Reyes Aymani. She believes that with persistence, Ckunsa can grow as a language, and the community’s heritage will live on. Through the efforts of people like Vilea and Reyes Aymani, Ckunsa is making a slow but steady comeback. “It’s wonderful to see how people are taking it up,” Reyes Aymani says. “The more we spread the words, the more the language grows.”
12. Why do sellers in San Pedro de Atacama speak different languages to visitors
A. To seek business opportunities. B. To show friendliness to tourists.
C. To improve their language skills. D. To promote the fame of the town.
13. What effort has been made to preserve Ckunsa
A. Replacing Spanish with Ckunsa in schools.
B. Integrating Ckunsa learning into education.
C. Establishing public schools to teach Ckunsa.
D. Listing Ckunsa as the nation’s cultural heritage.
14. What’s the purpose of recovering old terms from ancient songs and texts
A. To attract foreign visitors.
B. To enlarge Spanish vocabulary.
C. To restore the lost cultural heritage.
D. To simplify language learning for kids.
15 What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Losing Heritage is Losing Our Identity.
B. A Desert’s Lost Tongue finds Its Voice.
C. Saving Calama: The Return of a Race.
D. Exploring Ckunsa: A Window into Atacama.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Bear was not a bear. She was a big dog on the Perkinses’ family farm, a woolly creature with floppy ears and paws like bedroom slippers. She protected the ducks and chickens from being eaten by foxes and raccoons (浣熊) .
She guarded the children as well, watching over them as closely as she did the chickens and ducks. In winter the dog ran alongside the children as they sledded (滑雪橇) down snowy hills. In summer she swam with them in a nearby river.
Bear belonged to a breed (品种) that had long been used by Atlantic fishermen to help with their work, and it had a keen instinct for water rescue. When the children were in the river, the dog would swim in circles around them, barking when she felt they went out too far. She was the perfect farm dog — companion, guardian, protector.
The dog’s favorite among the three children was three-year-old little Mike. They often curled up together. Sometimes Bear would doze while Mike pretended to read to her. Often both were sound asleep, a tangle of dark fur, blond hair, small hands and huge paws. At bedtime, Mike saved his last hug for Bear, his “best friend”.
On a cold winter day, when their parents went out to send a parcel, eight-year-old Martha, seven-year-old Sara and Mike, went to slide on the frozen pond of their farm. Shouting happily, they slid back and forth, their boots gliding easily across the ice. They laughed as they watched Bear’s attempts to stop suddenly, which would instead send her skidding beyond them. Then, tired, the three sat down on the ice, with Bear beside them. Suddenly the ice gave way under their combined weight.
As Bear jumped for shore, the three children fell into the freezing cold water. Screaming, Martha and Sarah struggled to find footing on rocks underwater. Branches from a tree nearby provided handholds, and using every bit of their strength, the two girls pulled themselves to shore.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卷的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: Looking back, they saw little Mike holding on to a broken chunk (大块) of ice, unable to crawl onto it.

Paragraph 2: Seeing that, Bear let out a series of woofs and jumped into the water, heading straight for Mike.

【答案】
Looking back, they saw little Mike holding on to a broken chunk of ice, unable to crawl onto it. Panic slammed into Martha and Sara like a hammer; their breaths came in harsh clouds as the wind howled across the pond. “Mike, keep your arms up — don’t let go!” Martha shouted, her voice cracking with fear. The boy’s lips were turning a frightening shade of blue, and water sloshed over his boots each time the ice tilted. The sisters clung to a low branch, but the thought of re-entering the frigid hole was unbearable. With no adults in sight and daylight fading, the brittle silence of the farm suddenly felt enormous.
Seeing that, Bear let out a series of woofs and jumped into the water, heading straight for Mike. Powerful strokes sliced the surface as spray flew from her coat. When she reached him, she circled once, nudging his armpit with her nose until Mike’s arms slid over her broad shoulders. Instinct took over. Gripping his jacket between her teeth, she turned toward shore and began towing her passenger. Martha and Sara lay flat on the ice, stretching a long branch. The moment Bear’s paws scraped frozen ground, the girls hauled the boy and the dog together, collapsing in a trembling heap of relief.
