Our school is a green school. What makes it green
First, there’re a lot of trees in our school. There are trees in front of and behind every building. Some trees are green only in spring and summer, but some are green all year round. The trees make our school look like a big forest.
And our school is a green one because we “go green”. How do we do it We have “green days” every month. On “green days”, no students or teachers go to school by car. We all go there by bike or on foot. And we also have “Clean-up Day” every month. On that day, students go to the street to pick up rubbish (捡垃圾). We also have “Tree-planting Day” every spring. We plant young trees on hills.
Green is not only a color, but also about our life. Please “go green” with us and make our world beautiful.

The headmaster at my school decided to play an April Fools’ joke on the students when I was in high school. On March 31, she announced (宣布) that our school would hold a “Dress to Impress” day. 5
Girls were told to wear formal dresses and smart jackets, while a suit jacket and tie for each boy would be best. The teachers would do the same.
On April Fool’s Day, many of us students came to school dressed in our best clothes. 6
In the morning, all of us got together on the playground, waiting for the headmaster. She would speak to the students. 7 Instead, she wore jeans, running shoes and a T-shirt. The teachers also got dressed like her.

Practising curling (冰壶) on real ice is part of the everyday exercise for students at Dianchang Road Primary School in Beijing’s Shijingshan District.
The primary school started its own curling team early before the Beijing Winter Olympics. It built an ice rink for more than 300 students at the school so that students in different classes can all have the chance to take part in the sport on real ice.
The school made its “2+8+5” winter sports training plan for all the students. The “2”section of the plan can make sure all 390 students at the school are offered at least two opportunities every year to train “on ice” or “on snow”, while the “8+5” section refers to the 13 sports such as ice hockey and cross-country skiing, and students can choose from 5 sports played on real ice and 8 ice sports adapted (适应) to the “dry” ground.
“We wanted to create an environment for them to get a feel for these winter sports,” said Xue, the principal of the school.
From 7:10 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the playground is divided into different areas for students to practise skiing, running and ice hockey. The students are fully equipped just as they would really take part in the sports.
“My favourite sport is cross-country skiing. I love the excitement that skiing brings to me. I’m not afraid of falling down because my coach said she isn’t either,” said Lu Jianing, a 10-year-old girl.
The school located in Beijing’s first Winter Olympic Games community—Gaojinglu—also wants students to learn about the culture of the Olympic Games, including its spirit and symbolism.
It has a 60-square-metre Winter Olympic-themed museum in the school, which includes handicrafts (手工艺品), creative paintings and sculptures and photographs made by students to describe what the Winter Olympic Games means to them.

Today I went to Sam’s school in the UK. It was really different from my school in China.
Girls wore grey skirts and white shirts, boys wore grey trousers, and everyone wore the school tie. Some of Sam’s lessons were a bit strange for me. We were reading Shakespeare in the English lesson, and there were quite some old words like “thou” and “thee” to mean “you”. In History we studied 20th Century China. It was strange hearing a foreign side of history—and hearing English people trying to say all our Chinese names!
Classes were also a lot more relaxing than in China. Teachers were called “sir” or “miss”, everyone shouted answers and raised their hands in classes. It was more like a debate than a class. A bell rang at the end of each lesson and everyone jumped up to go to the next class.
At break we bought potato chips and cookies in the dining room. Lunch was later than in China at 1 o’clock. We had big plates of pie with carrots. For dessert there was hot sweet rice called rice pudding.
It was good that I’d had an excellent lunch, because at Sam’s school Monday afternoons are taken up with sports.
I played my first game of netball—a bit like basketball, but with some differences. Luckily, I’d had a quick look in the rule book before I tried to join in the game.
