We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home,” has a hard-luck tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County. Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miler. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the dump. But Buhler said she saw Shelby recently had needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.
4. Why does the author mention an actor’s struggle before a career breakthrough at the very beginning
A. To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.
B. To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences.
C. To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.
D. To clearly point out the main idea of the passage.
5. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film
A. Her adoption picture. B. Her flat-out smiling.
C. her personality and ability. D. Her miserable experiences.
6. By saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph, Buhler probably means _______.
A. the dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it
B. it took quite a lot of trouble for the dog to change her own fate.
C. she’s really excited to see the dog she helped live such a happy life
D. the dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality
7. What do you think may serve as the best title of the passage
A. The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”
B. From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star
C. The Trainer and Her Star Dog
D. Shelby’s Hard-luck Story

A speech in a play by Shakespeare can be as short as a word or as long as several hundred. But what is the most common length
Staying away from Shakespeare himself for a moment, we can take Ben Jonson’s play Volpone (1606) and count the number of speeches and their lengths. The most common length is four words. The next most common length is five words. Of the other 16 Jonson’s plays, 12 also have a speech length mode (模式) of four. It was not just Jonson; it was everybody. After 1602, four-word speeches were the most common kind across all the early modern plays that survived.
The London theatre industry took off in the late 1580s and early 1590s and we see a concentration of speech length modes of nine or ten. After 1602, the mode of four predominated. If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.
Our suggestion is that the playwrights (剧作家) learned progressively from one another how to represent more closely the speech lengths of everyday exchanges and found that audiences responded well to these. They started to focus less on strict writing rules and more on the liveliness of everyday speech.
Another way to think of this is offered by the Russian literary scholar Boris Yarkho. He put forward an “index (指数) of liveliness” — the ratio of the number of speeches to the total number of lines in a play. He researched the works of the 17th-century French playwright Pierre Corneille and found that his comedies have a higher index because of their shorter speeches. The move from a mode of nine words to a mode of four represents the shortened average speech, and thus a move to livelier drama in Yarkho’s terms.
Nevertheless, we have no record of any dramatist or playgoer reflecting on the shortening of average speech lengths; our only knowledge of it comes from counting the words in the plays for ourselves.
8. What happened in English plays around the 1600s
A. Their storylines were about famous writers. B. They were influenced by a poetic writing style.
C. They featured different storytelling techniques. D. Their speeches were generally shorter in length.
9. What does the underlined word “predominated” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Remained unique. B. Took the leading position.
C. Disappeared slowly. D. Played an educational role.
10. Why did playwrights change their writing styles according to paragraph 4
A. To challenge traditional writing rules. B. To stand out by applying their unique style.
C. To avoid being affected by social values. D. To create realistic and acceptable speeches.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Shyness is a sense of uneasiness and discomfort that some people feel in the presence of others. It comes from self-consciousness, low self-respect and fear of judgment. Shy people seem to make bad decisions. They often make unrealistic social comparisons, comparing themselves against the most energetic or outgoing individuals. They believe that others are always thinking of them poorly. They abandon new social opportunities. ____11____.
However, shy people can successfully deal with social challenges without changing themselves. ____12____ They are the last one to announce their achievements or let the world know what is amazing about them. When shyness is not extreme, it can make them appear more approachable to others. Shyness, and the modesty nature that go with it, are rarely threatening to others and may allow people to feel more comfortable around them. ____13____ This calmness may have a positive effect on those around them.
Shyness is common and is easy to overcome with practice. You can handle shyness with the right tools. Instead of avoiding social events, you can schedule them in advance and practice your social skills ahead of time. Preparing questions and amusing stories for others also helps. This way, you shift your focus from yourself to people around you. ____14____ You might just get a surprise and find out that one of the people you admire for their social abilities is actually just as shy as you.
____15____ When you recognize and understand your shyness, and then act based on that self-awareness, it can also lead you everywhere to success.
A. Many shy people are modest.
B. Shyness doesn’t disappear on its own.
C. Being shy has some unexpected advantages.
D. You can even ask socially outward people for advice.

After hitting the button of an alarm clock a couple of times, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She had a big presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine more than ever. She grabbed (抓住) her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.
As she joined the line of cars in the drive-through (免下车的餐馆), Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of anticipation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of having a cup of coffee was her little daily enjoyment.
The line of cars went forward slowly, and soon, Sarah found herself at the drive-through window. She reached for her purse to pay, but before she could hand over her credit card, the cashier smiled and said, “Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.” “Really ” she asked, both surprised and grateful. The cashier nodded. “Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!”
With a warm smile, Sarah accepted the free coffee and drove away. The unexpected act of kindness was in her mind as she drank the delicious coffee. It put a spring in her step and a smile on her face, making her presentation a little less worrying.
As she exited the drive-through, Sarah glanced in her rearview (后视的) mirror at the next car approaching the coffee shop window. An idea began to form in her mind. Maybe she could do the same, pay it forward and brighten someone else’s morning. She decided to stick around, park her car and go back into the coffee shop. She approached the cashier and said, “I’d like to pay for the coffee of the person in the car behind me.” The cashier smiled and nodded, processing the payment.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Technology and Life
It is a great honor for me to deliver a speech concerning “Technology and Life”. With the rapid development of technology, its influences on our daily lives are everywhere.
Thanks to high-tech, we can stay connected with friends and families, no matter where they are. We can easily access information, and even order food and groceries with a few taps on our mobile phones. However, technology also brings negative influences. With the constant exposure to the screens, our eyes get tired. What’s worse, there is always a concern about privacy and data security.
Despite these drawbacks, I think technology’s positive impacts outweigh the negative ones.
第二节 (满分25分)
52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sarah knew she had just started a chain of kindness, and she felt a warm sense of satisfaction.

The acts of kindness kept on coming.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
As she walked to her car, Sarah was lost in thought. How would the next driver react Would they continue the chain of goodwill She watched from her car as the driver behind her pulled up to the window. The cashier informed him that his coffee had already been paid for, and then something beautiful happened. The driver, a middle-aged man, smiled and said joyfully, “That’s wonderful! Please use the money I was going to spend to pay for the coffee of the car behind me.” One pays for the coffee of the person behind her, which sparks a chain of good deeds for the entire day.
The acts of kindness kept on coming. A young woman paid for the coffee of a tired mom with a baby in the back seat. A construction worker in a pickup truck covered the cost for a group of excited teenagers on their way to school. An elderly couple even got in on the action, paying for the coffee of a teacher on her way to work. And in the coffee shop, people began to talk about it. The line of cars in the drive-through grew longer as more people wanted to be a part of the phenomenon.
