Britain became the world’s first major economy to quit coal power when it shut off the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Plant this week. It was a milestone for the country which was the first nation in the world to power its economy with the dirty fuel in the early 19th century.
The Romans found coal in western England as early as the third century and coal mining became a profitable business in the 1600s across England, Scotland and Wales. Around the turn of the 18th century, the coal-powered steam engine was invented and used to power industry in Britain. In the early 19th century, a British engineer invented the coal-fired train which sped commerce across the country. Then in 1882, Thomas Edison’s company opened the first coal-fired power plant in London. By the 1950s, British coal consumption peaked and about 96% of its electricity came from burning it. But the pollution became so serious that the word “smog” was coined. In the so-called Great Smog of 1952, at least 4,000 people died within four days in London.
Since then Britain has started to seek cleaner energy. In the 1960s, it discovered natural gas in the North Sea. In 2023, about a third of its electricity came from gas. In recent decades, Britain has also invested massively in renewable energy. It is now the world’s second-largest offshore wind market, after China. In 2023, offshore wind generated 17% of the nation’s electricity.
At the same time, Britain has tightened the control on air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. “In the early 2000s, the British government was writing the world’s first set of laws on climate change,” recalls Michael Lewis, CEO of the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Plant. “Those laws banned new coal stations from being built, and taxed coal plants for their pollution. Such measures have made burning coal increasingly uneconomical.”
Looking ahead, Britain aims to quit natural gas by 2030, and cut CO2 emissions entirely by 2050.
24. Why is the Great Smog mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To show the side effects of burning coal. B. To tell the risks of coal mining.
C. To explain a newly coined word. D. To criticize the first power plant in London.
25. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Britain’s potential in emission cuts. B. Britain’s heavy reliance on natural gas.
C. Britain’s strength at the offshore wind market. D. Britain’s efforts to replace the dirty coal.
26. The Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Plant is closed down probably due to ________.
A. a newly passed law B. the lack of new coal stations
C. the increasing operation costs D. a shortage of coal
27. When does Britain plan to abandon natural gas
A. By 2035. B. By 2030. C. By 2045. D. By 2050.

When Inside Higher Education recently interviewed college students about their reading. Ava Wherley, a biology major, complained, “Academic texts usually use extremely complex language, which makes them harder to read. I have to rely on short videos for comprehension.”
But Wherley is not, as she believes, a visual learner. Instead, she’s just a struggling reader with a fluency at a middle-school reading level. In this respect, Wherley has plenty of company. According to the study, millions of college students in the US have to rely on videos or AI for their reading nowadays, largely because they struggle with reading comprehension beyond a basic level.
The interviewers have further revealed that students struggle with reading mainly because teachers have reduced the amount and complexity of students’ reading materials in primary and secondary grades. They have found that most teachers in secondary education usually assign short reading passages. And, in the few classes where students read books, they usually receive summaries, which “just ruins the whole story,” as Wherley protested.
“However when kids read entire novels without notes or summaries, they discover the pleasures of reading. Such kind of reading gives even avoidant readers the enhanced vocabulary they need to become better readers,” the interviewers write in their report.
Another major finding from the research is that reading frequency accounts for 13% of the variation between strong and weak readers in elementary grades, a difference that climbs to 30% in high school and 34% in college students. Moreover, as the study has revealed, students who read entire books in their leisure time enjoy the most significant benefits to their reading comprehension.
“Despite these significant benefits, only 14 percent of the students reported reading in their leisure time,” the report concludes. “The result perfectly illustrates the Matthew Effect: the more they avoid reading, the harder they’ll find reading. In other words, students may be caught in a vicious (恶性的) cycle that ruins their success in college, the workplace, and life, including their ability to understand a complex argument or make an informed decision.”
28. Why does Ava Wherley turn to short videos
A. The reading materials are boring. B. The academic texts are too complex.
C. She fails to reach the required reading fluency. D. She is a student with learning disabilities.
29. What might the researchers advise teachers to do in secondary education
A. Encourage students to read entire books. B. Ask students to read notes or summaries.
C. Help weak readers learn the new words first. D. Give struggling students short reading passages.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Students should be given more leisure time. B. Avoidant students need more encouragement.
C. American students are happy with their reading skills. D. Reading fluency is critical for students’ success.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To find out the root cause of reading problems. B. To introduce the findings of a recent survey.
C. To review a newly published educational report. D. To expose the problems in the US higher education.
D
It’s not just you. A lot of people think that the quality of results from traditional search engines is getting worse. Now, the rise of AI search engines may lead to different and perhaps better ways to look up information if they are used properly.
Rather than typing in a string of keywords, AI searches should be conversational — for example, “What’s the average temperature in London for the second half of February ” or “Where are some good places to travel in Europe this summer ” If you’re not satisfied with an answer, ask follow-up questions to zero in on the information needed. Some even offer users related follow-up questions to get the best answer.
Unlike traditional search results that throw up a list of links, AI search engines produce a readable summary of the information, sometimes with a few key links as footnotes. Of course, the answers vary — sometimes widely — depending on the site. Answers from are among the most readable and are consistently provided in a narrative form.
Although the AI search results seem like they’re written by a very competent human, they’re not always correct. The phenomenon is called “hallucination”. Hallucinations occur frequently since these AI systems scan huge amounts of information taken from doubtful sources and then use algorithms (算法) to come up with well-edited answers. Some AI search engines disclose how their algorithms have been trained on. Others provide few or no details.
Therefore, the best advice is to try more than one AI search engine and compare the results. And always double check sources as we should do with the traditional search engines. For example, at one point, Komo, one of the best AI search engines, insisted that Canada’s population in 1991 was about 1 million people. It turned out that the figure came from a Wikipedia page for the country’s native population.
32. What does the phrase “zero in on” underlined in paragraph 2 mean
A. Get rid of. B. Narrow down to. C. Make up with. D. Take control of.
33. Why does the “hallucination” phenomenon happen
A. The information may be taken from unreliable sources.
B. Different algorithms may use different training methods.
C. The training processes remain secret to the general public.
D. Some of the algorithms are designed by unqualified engineers.
34. What are we recommended to do with the AI search results
A. Test them at different traditional sites. B. See whether they are well-edited or not.
C. Check them carefully at the Wikipedia page. D. Compare them with results from other AI sites.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Where to Find the Best AI Search Engine B. Limitations of Traditional Search Engines
C. How to Use AI Search Engines Properly D. Differences Among the AI Search Engines

Young Martin from America had always dreamt of visiting some small towns of Italy. Finally, he saved enough money and set off on his journey alone, filled with expectation for the experiences that awaited him.
Upon his arrival at a small town, Martin found a small hotel and decided to check in. He was received by the hotel owner Emma, an elderly local woman who only spoke Italian. Fortunately, he knew a little Italian and finally settled in his comfortable room.
The days went smoothly and Martin was amazed by the beauty of the small town. What made his stay more pleasant was Emma’s kindness and generosity. Though she seldom talked with him, she shared delicious food with him and really cared about him. Martin felt lucky and grateful that he had met such a kind local. Actually, Martin’s presence made Emma happy as well.
However, the peace was broken on the last day of Martin’s stay. He was out in the morning and at lunchtime couldn’t find his bag he always carried with him. He got worried as the bag contained his passport and money. He searched every place he had been to, but couldn’t find his bag. He went to the local police station because he thought those who found his bag with a passport in it might hand it to the police officers. However, the language barrier posed a big challenge. His limited Italian and the police officers’ little knowledge of English made the communication discouraging and confusing. His efforts didn’t pay off.
Martin didn’t return to the hotel until the night fell. Emma was relieved to see him back, but soon noticed he didn’t carry his black-and-white bag. From his broken Italian and body language, she learned he had lost it.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning. Emma offered to help Martin.

【答案】One possible version:
The next morning, Emma offered to help Martin. She accompanied him to report the incident to the police officers again, communicating with them in fluent Italian. Giving a detailed account of the lost bag, including its color and size, she also emphasized the importance of the bag to Martin as she knew he had always carried it with him. The local officers took some notes and promised to inform them if anyone handed in the lost bag. Emma left the hotel’s phone number and took Martin back to the hotel.
In the afternoon, Emma received a call from the police station. The officer who called told her that someone had found the bag and it could be claimed before the night. Excited and grateful, Martin followed Emma to get his bag, in which his passport and money remained. Martin was so thrilled that he gave Emma a big hug and expressed his sincere gratitude in English. Looking at Emma’s confused face, Martin quickly said “thank you” in Italian. Emma smiled back, which inspired Martin to extend his stay in this lovely town.
