Born in Pakistan, Malala grew up in a family of educators. Her father was a school principal, and her mother was a teacher. They both encouraged Malala to pursue her passion for learning. As a bright and curious child, always struggling to be the best in her class, she excelled (杰出) in her studies.

Gorillas (大猩猩) in films such as King Kong and Tarzan are wildly beating their chests when under threat. Researchers have tried to find out what the behavior might mean, and they suspect the gorillas exhibit this behavior not to start fights, but to prevent them — and chest-beating could be used to advertise their body size to other gorillas.
Scientists observed 25 wild male mountain gorillas for over 3, 000 hours. The research team used audio equipment to record the sound frequency, rate, duration, and amount of chest beats. To determine each gorilla’s size, the researchers used cameras to photograph and measure each gorilla’s back.
While the rate, duration, and amount of beats did not correlate (相关) with the size of the gorillas, sound frequency did, the researchers report. The chest-beating could be a way for the gorillas to advertise their size to others and, in turn, avoid fights that could result in serious injury or death.
While gorillas can obviously observe size just by getting a good look at others, the researchers suggest chest-beating is copper-bottomed when trying to communicate through a thick forest habitat. The sounds gorillas create by beating their chests are powerful enough to travel long distances through thick forests and signal to others their size and fighting ability.
Animal expert Anna Nekaris notes it would be interesting to see if smaller gorillas can mimic (模仿) the deep tones of larger ones in future studies. “A study like this can lead the way for further research to see how animals might be capable of making use of ‘honest’ signals.”
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about concerning the research
A. Its findings. B. Its method. C. Its limitation. D. Its purpose.
9. Why do some gorillas beat their chests according to the researchers
A. To declare war on other gorillas. B. To celebrate their victory in a fight.
C. To welcome their companions. D. To frighten other gorillas away.
10. What does the underlined word “copper-bottomed” in paragraph 4 mean
A. friendly. B. interesting. C. reliable. D. silent.
11. What does Nekaris suggest researchers study in the future
A. If smaller gorillas can make deep-toned chest beating.
B If gorillas’ chest-beating contains other information.
C. If larger gorillas are better at using honest signals.
D. If gorillas have better communication skills than other animals.

The Summer Olympics in Paris is always impressive, but 2024 promised something extraordinary even before the games began — the seats you are sitting on! Made from locally recycled plastic, these seats are sustainability (可持续性) champions in their own right.
The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics made history in terms of sustainability, as 11, 000 stadium seats made entirely of recycled plastic are used during the water sports. The plastic used for the seats was collected from recycling bins in the Seine-Saint-Denis neighborhood, and 80% of the 100 metric tons needed for the seats came from this area. The collected plastic was cut and torn into small pieces, processed and turned into new material by a local recycling firm called Le Pavé.
After the base materials are produced into plastic seats with different colors, the seats have gone through numerous tests, including mechanical resistance, fire resistance, as well as UV resistance. The recycled plastic chairs proved to be strong and durable, with producers reporting no problems in the production process.
The use of recycled plastic seats is part of Paris and France’s commitment to sustainability, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions (排放) by 50% compared to the 2012 and 2016 games. Additionally, the city is working to fight against environment worsening by making the Seine River swimmable for the first time in decades, in an effort to host the triathlon (铁人三项) there.
The recycled plastic seats not only promote sustainability but also raise awareness about waste recycling, with children being encouraged to throw their plastic bottles into appropriate bins.
12. What is special about the seats for the 2024 Paris Olympics
A. They won the championship in a competition.
B. They are dropped in recycling bins after being used.
C. They are made from recycled plastic.
D. They are produced from local raw materials.
13. Where was the plastic for the seats mostly collected from
A. Recycling firms. B. Local recycling bins.
C. All over France. D. International suppliers.
14. What does the numerous tests mainly show in paragraph 3
A. The advantages of the seats. B. The production process of the seats.
C. The difficulty of producing the seats. D. The classification of the plastic seats.
15. What is one of the goals of using recycled plastic seats at the Paris Olympics
A. To create continued economic growth. B. To reduce sustainability.

Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
“Ava,” her dad said seriously, “a cell phone isn’t just for fun and games. It’s a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must...” He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah’s mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah’s pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah’s mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie’s tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. “I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah’s mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. “I can’t find my phone!” she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
“Are you going to tell your parents ” Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents’ disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

【答案】
The moment Ava walked in, her parents greeted her with a smile. She knew she had to tell them about the lost phone, but words stuck in her throat. Recalling the trust they had put in her with the phone, Ava felt a pang of distress as she prepared to confess. “I…I’ve lost my phone.” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. Her father’s brow furrowed. “Did it perhaps fall from your pocket during the movie Or could it have… ” Her mother inquired anxiously. When Ava admitted that, in her panic, she had forgotten to go back and search properly or ask for help, her parents exchanged a silent glance. “Accidents happen.” Her father assured her. “We’ll figure this out together.”
Then her parents drove her back to the cinema. They went to the reception desk and asked the cinema staff for help. It turned out that someone had turned the phone in to the front desk. They took the phone back. With a voice choked by emotion, Ava apologized to her father, “I know I messed up, Dad.” Placing a hand on her shoulder, her father told Ava that maturity wasn’t just about having a phone or not, but about how she handled situations, especially when they went wrong. “It comes along with a sense of responsibility. Remember to be responsible for your phone!” Her mother added, putting the phone back into Ava’s hand. As she held the device, she felt the familiar weight, a weight more significant than before.
