My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. Within minutes of coming out, I was taken away into another room while doctors gave my parents the difficult news: I was born missing my left hand. This news would come to define the rest of my life, but thanks to a nurse’ intervention telling my parents to treat me normally. I had a relatively normal childhood. I played sports, acted in theater, excelled (出色) in school, participated in student government and had play dates with friends. Despite some stares and polite questions about my limb (肢体) difference, I wasn’t made fun of.
As kids do, I quickly learned to adapt, working around the “missing” hand. One of my earliest memories is my father trying to teach me to tie my shoes. His two handed method wouldn’t work for me, so I figured out a way to do it with one hand.
I started hiding disability on the first day of high school. I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious. I remember getting on the yellow school bus and one of the other kids stared just a little too long at my left arm. The staring worried me in a way it never had before, and I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I impulsively (冲动地) slipped it into my pocket. For the next two decades, I kept my limb difference hidden at all times. From then on, I realized that my missing hand made me hideous and that if people knew about it they would be scared of me and they don’t want to be around me anymore. Honestly, I was terrified that if I exposed my limb difference that people would find me as ugly as I found myself, I felt lonely and scared all the time.
When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and so lonely, I met someone who convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to really hold my limb, look at it, take pictures of it, touch it, love it—love me. From that point on, I saw my limb difference as something unique and beautiful about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
Unhiding my hand made everything in my life better. It was a transformational experience, and through that process, I learned to love myself. This ability to love myself changed how I lived my entire life, and it made me happier.

The author was born prematurely.
The author needed special medical treatment.
The parents wanted to see their newborn child.
The doctors had something to inform the parents.
What does the author’s memory of tying shoes with one hand suggest
The author relied heavily on others.
The author’s father was not helpful.
The author has a strong ability to adapt.
There are challenges in the author’s daily life.
What can be inferred about the author’s emotional state in high school
Fearful of judgment and self-doubting. B.Self-conscious and confident.
C.Motivated and optimistic. D.Envious and insecure.
What is the main message the author wants to convey
Actions speak louder than words. B.Be yourself, everyone else is taken. C.Practice makes perfect. D.Better late than never.

Earthquakes are among the most mysterious and terrifying natural disasters. While we can sometimes predict major ones, others strike without warning, devastating cities and causing fires, landslides and tsunamis. With climate change leading to increased wildfires and hurricanes, could it also make earthquakes more common
The most dangerous earthquakes are tectonic (地壳构造的) earthquakes, caused by the movement of Earth’s
tectonic plates. These plates shift about 1.5 centimeters per year due to internal heat, building pressure until they suddenly move, which releases energy and causes earthquakes.
Unlike other disasters, it’s almost impossible to predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuations (疏散) next to impossible.
Unfortunately, climate change could make quakes happen closer together and with more intensity, experts told Live Science. With global warming, glaciers are melting at an increased rate. When melted glacier water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises, said John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Victoria.
More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up, said Marco Bohnhoff, a geophysicist at GFZ Helmholtz Centre Potsdam and Free University Berlin in Germany. As water pressure spikes, the pressure on fault (断层) lines near the coast will also increase.
Even if we stopped using greenhouse gases now, it would take up to 1,000 years for sea level rise to stop,
Bohnhoff added. He predicts that over that time, the gaps between big coastal earthquakes will become shorter.
Cassidy is uncertain if sea level rise will cause giant quakes to happen faster within our lifetimes. He emphasized that climate change will make them more dangerous. “It’s an important topic, and one that I’m sure we’ll see a lot of information coming out on in the coming months and years,” he said. “But no matter what we’ve discovered, it’s not good news.”
What does the article tell us about tectonic earthquakes
They are easier to predict than others.
They happen mostly near coastal areas.
They result from the shifting of Earth’s plates.
They rarely lead to other natural disasters.
What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
The land. B.The glacier. C.The quake. D.The sea.
What does Bohnhoff imply
Coastal areas will be safer over time.
Sea level rise will eventually stabilize.
Human actions have long-term effects. D.Earthquakes will become more predictable.
What is Cassidy’s attitude toward the future impact of climate change on earthquakes
Hopeful. B.Concerned. C.Uncaring. D.Skeptical.

Those who spent more time typing or speaking with ChatGPT each day tended to report higher levels of emotional dependence on, and problematic use of, the chatbot, as well as heightened levels of loneliness, according to new research from OpenAI in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The findings were part of a pair of studies conducted by researchers at the two organizations.
The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 helped kick off a craze for generative artificial intelligence. Since then, people have used chatbots for everything from coding to therapy sessions. As developers like OpenAI push out more sophisticated models and voice features that make them better at imitating the ways humans communicate, there is arguably more potential for forming parasocial relationships with these chatbots.
To conduct the studies, the researchers followed nearly 1,000 people for a month. participants had a wide range of prior experience with ChatGPT and were randomly assigned a text-only version of it or one of two different voice-based options to use for at least five minutes per day. Some were told to carry out open-ended chats about anything they wanted; others were told to have personal or non-personal conversations with the service.
The researchers found that people who tend to get more emotionally attached in human relationships and are more trusting of the chatbot were more likely to feel lonelier and more emotionally dependent on ChatGPT. The researchers didn’t find that a more engaging voice led to a more negative outcome, they said.
In the second study, researchers used software to analyze 3 million user conversations with ChatGPT and also surveyed people about how they interact with the chatbot. They found very few people actually use ChatGPT for emotional conversations.
Cathy Mengying Fang, a study co-author and MIT graduate student, said the researchers are cautious about people using the findings to conclude that more usage of the chatbot will necessarily have negative consequences for users. The study didn’t control for the amount of time people used the chatbot as a main factor, she said, and didn’t compare to a control group that doesn’t use chatbots.
What is the main conclusion of the study
Most users rely on ChatGPT for emotional support.
More ChatGPT use may cause emotional problems.
Frequent ChatGPT users may lose control of emotions.
Voice chat may lead to stronger emotional attachment.
Why are chatbots like ChatGPT becoming popular
They offer free services. B.Tech giants develop them. C.Their functions are advanced. D.They can replace human work.
What were the participants in the first study asked to do
Test ChatGPT’s technical capabilities through specific tasks.
Regularly interact with ChatGPT using different modes and topics.
Complete surveys about their emotional experiences with ChatGPT.
Analyze their own conversations with ChatGPT for research purposes.
What can be inferred from Cathy Mengying Fang
The study has some limitations. B.She is critical of the study findings. C.The study conclusion applies widely. D.The study shows ChatGPT’s harm clearly.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The hot sun on your skin, sweat going into your eyes—anyone who has played a sport in the middle of summer knows it’s not easy. And some people even think adding heat is a good way to get a better workout—like in hot yoga or hot Pilates, which are done in rooms as hot as 38degrees Celsius. 36
The answer isn’t as simple as a yes or no. There may be some benefits of exercising in high temperatures. It is believed that these works warm the muscles, which can help you avoid injuries. 37 This is because they make your heart work a bit harder.
But before you turn the heat up, it’s not all good news. For one thing, your body might not be able to work as hard in high heat as it can in cooler temperatures, meaning your workout won’t be as good as you might like.
38 Because the body sweats more, it’s easy to get dehydrated(脱水). Sweating also means losing
important salts, so you may feel tightening and discomfort in your muscles or stomach.
39 It is a dangerous state of extreme overheating which happens when your body gets too hot and its temperature goes over degrees Celsius. This situation of high body temperature, like heatstroke(中暑), can cause serious damage to different parts of your body, like your brain, heart, liver and kidneys and in extreme cases, even death.
If you do want to try heated exercise, there are ways to make it safer. Drinking lots of water helps stop you from getting dehydrated. 40 And try to wear light clothes—and take breaks when you need to!
But are high-temperature workouts really better
The biggest risk of exercising in heat is heatstroke.
But why do people like high-temperature workouts
Heated works may also help you burn more calories.
This is why many people prefer to exercise in the cool evening.
There are also health risks related to exercising in high temperatures.
Sports drinks will replace any of those important salts you lose from sweat too.

As Papá fell sound asleep, Catalina slid from her bed and felt her way to the front door. The girl waited a moment to see if any of her family would wake, but nobody stirred. She tiptoed upstairs to her “Observatory”, longing for drinking in deep lungfuls of the clear night air under the bright stars.
She polished her dear telescope, which was presented by her grandpa, the only one to support her dream. She assembled (组装) it, disassembled it and reassembled it repeatedly, knowing its parts very well.
Through it she could explore the unknown galaxy, the Milky Way stretching across the deep blue sky. Night was always her favorite time. When everything was quiet, she was lost in her starry night. At this moment, she seemed to forget her cares and sorrows in the daytime.
She told her secret dream to these beloved ones, her friends, teachers and even her father. When she said, “Papá, I want to be an astronomer working in the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory someday,” her father replied, “Maybe if you work hard, you'll be hired to clean the offices.” No one believed she would be a scientist one day. But why She knew she could be a good scientist. She knew it!
A big day was coming—to visit the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, where she had visited for dozens of times, familiar with every set of the instruments there. This time with her classmates she was still eager for something stimulating.
She took a cautious step forward, holding her breath, and her eyes getting closer to the lens ( 镜片) of the
telescope. She adjusted the device softly and carefully, hoping to find more... “Bang!...” suddenly there came a loud noise. One of her old friends “one-meter” telescope fell down, broken.
“Look out! Stop touching anything! Step backward!” The manager yelled.
“One-meter is broken, but the scientist has the day off. Nobody can fix it.” An operator added. Worries blanketed the hall.
“I CAN FIX IT!” Catalina's voice was surprisingly calm.
“You what...?” The manager uttered, confused, and doubted.
“It has 67 parts in total. An adjustable spanner (扳手) and a star screwdriver (螺丝刀) can help.” “Then you know how to assemble it.” His eyes wide open, he still half believed.
Confidently, she nodded.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Para 1: Hesitating for a second, the manager agreed, “Just do it, and I'll take all
responsibilities.”
Para 2: Thunderous applause erupted and rocked the hall.

Not many things beat a day by the sea. There’s nothing quite like the feel of the sun on your back and waves breaking near your feet. Here are some great things to do by the sea. It’s often windy on the coast, making it a perfect place to fly a kite. While you’re doing that, keep an eye on the sky for sea birds that dive into the water. (18) You can also find an underwater world that’s filled with wildlife. You might find fish hiding in rock pools. Remember to put them back quickly once you’ve had a look, and don’t ever leave them in a bucket in the sun. Some fish can be very dangerous too. (19) Enjoy feeling the water wash over your feet and legs. Feel the sand moving between your toes. Why not see if you can spot creatures that might be interested in your feet The coast is the perfect place to kick off your shoes and go for a walk. Feel how soft and warm the sand is under your feet.
Explore a cave — who knows what you’ll discover Lots of our places near the coast have caves to explore, but you’ll need to watch out for the sea coming in. Maybe you can also go swimming in the sea.

Dear George,
How is everything lately Aiming to raise people’s awareness of protecting our country, a military parade was held in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of China's victory in World War II. I'm glad you're interested and writing to share it with you.
The parade kicked off with a showcase of China's advanced self-made equipment like invisible fighters and missiles, many appearing for the first time. After that, veterans' descendants who honored their ancestors' sacrifices came into our view. This event is extremely meaningful. Not only can it show China's expectation and love for peace and development but also remember history, making me feel greatly proud as a Chinese.
I'd be happy to share more if you're interested. Looking forward to your reply!
Best regards,
Li Hua

Hesitating for a second, the manager agreed, “Just do it, and I'll take all responsibilities.” He handed her the tools she needed, watching in disbelief as Catalina confidently began to work. Her fingers moved swiftly, each part fitting perfectly into place as if guided by an unseen force. Minutes ticked by, and the tension in the air thickened with every successful turn of the screw.
Thunderous applause erupted and rocked the hall. When Catalina finished, the telescope stood tall and proud, restored to its former glory. The manager beamed, his doubts vanished. “How did you do it ? ” he asked, amazement coloring his voice. Catalina smiled, her eyes shining with determination. “I've been preparing for this moment ever since Papá gave me this telescope. I knew I could fix it because I know every part of it, just like I know every star in the sky.” That day, Catalina not only fixed the telescope but also proved to everyone that she was destined to become a great astronomer.
