第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Four Cool Languages
Chinese
Around 1.4 billion people speak Chinese. Chinese is a tonal (声调的) language, meaning that changing the tone of just one syllable (音节) can affect a word's meaning. Chinese writing has ancient roots, which is thought to have developed starting around 2000 BC.
Arabic
Over 370 million people speak Arabic. Written Arabic uses a cursive style font (连笔) that looks more like artworks than writing. Arabic is written from right to left rather than left to right, making it different from many other languages.
English
Around 379 million people speak English as a native language. It's an official language in a huge number of other countries.
English is the most widely spoken second language, with over a billion people speaking it as a non native language. That means around twice as many people speak English as a second language as people who speak it as a first language.
Italian
Nearly 68 million people speak Italian. If you play music or sing, chances are that you already know a lot of Italian because many familiar musical terms are actually Italian.
Not only will learning Italian help you pick up vocabulary, but it will also help you understand the meanings of musical terms in greater depth.
21.What is a feature of Arabic?
A.It doesn't have cursive style fonts.
B.It helps artists with their artworks.
C.It is written from right to left.
D.It is closely related to music.
22.Which language is the most widely used as a second language in the world?
A.Arabic. B.English.
C.Chinese. D.Italian.
23.What's the number of people who speak Italian?
A.Nearly 68 million.
B.Around 370 million.
C.Over 379 million.
D.Around 1.4 billion.

The classic 1951 science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still includes an impressive character—a frightening robot (Gort) whose terrible actions are under control only when he is ordered, “Klaatu Barada Nikto”. What does this mean? I don't know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other, I am often similarly confused.
I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age—18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn't an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea what “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an awkward expression, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of noncomprehension (不理解). I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five year nap, I'd have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn't understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on at least having interest in what they're talking about, as well as on my ability—for the most part—to understand their explanations.
But what will happen if my interest wanes and the language ship finally disappears over the horizon? The answer, to me, is clear: Klaatu Barada Nikto.
24.What did the author probably meet with?
A.Hearing loss.
B.Cultural shock.
C.A language barrier.
D.A frightening robot.
25.What makes the author fall behind in language?
A.Learning needs. B.Teaching tasks.
C.Age difference. D.Language abuse.
26.What does the author think of language change?
A.It is entirely avoidable.
B.It is really small.
C.It is very beneficial.
D.It is much too rapid.
27.What does the underlined word “wanes” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Lessens. B.Grows.
C.Happens. D.Focuses.

There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting.
When my friend Lily from London used the word “larder”, I didn't know what it meant. Realizing I didn't follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted__down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged.
Most times, I can know what Lily means. Last week, she regretted sending her boys to watch an early morning tennis game without their fleeces. I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like those. Other times, we have to ask each other. She recently told me a funny tale about a woman who was pissed. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that pissed means drunk.
Here is one more example. My British friend Jane was filling out a ticket at the grocery store recently. She asked the young man if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn't follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber.
In order to communicate well with the British, we Americans should learn some words that the British use differently. And I think people who learn English as a second language should also realize that there are differences between American English and British English.
28.When Lily used the word “larder”, she was probably looking for a ________.
A.cup B.ladder
C.cupboard D.cooker
29.What does the underlined phrase “jotted down” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Wrote down. B.Left behind.
C.Looked for. D.Settled down.
30.Last week, Lily regretted sending her boys to watch a tennis game mainly because ________.
A.she thought the game was boring
B.she wanted to spend time with her boys
C.she didn't dress her boys in thick clothes
D.her boys got lost
31.According to the passage, in British English ________.
A.the word “pissed” means “angry”
B.the word “jacket” is often used
C.the word “engaged” means “tired”
D.the word “rubber” means “eraser”

Some immigrants (外来移民) in the northeastern part of the US, Maine, are learning to lose their accents. They speak English fluently but have a difficult time being understood because they have heavy accents.
Nyirabahizi said she left her home and job in Rwanda two years ago, coming to America in hopes of a brighter future. She has a master's degree in computer science and speaks English fluently. She said all of her classes in Rwanda were taught in English, but here she had to learn again because of her accent.
She attended a free class to reduce her accent with seven other students. The city of Portland conducted the class and Greenlaw was the teacher. She said immigrants who had reduced their accents had greater success at work. And they could communicate more easily with store workers, teachers, doctors and neighbors. “It's a basic need to be understood,” Greenlaw told the newspaper. “It affects every part of their lives.”
Greenlaw began the class by telling students the 44 sounds of the English language. She told the students how the lips and jaws worked to form the sound. She told the students that some American English pronunciation rules didn't make a lot of sense. But she said it was important to learn them if immigrants wanted to be understood by Americans.
Losing one's accent is especially important for immigrants who live in Maine. More than 90 percent of the population of Maine are whites. Many people who live in Maine have not heard foreign accents except in movies or on televisions.
Greenlaw said some Mainers were impatient with people who spoke English with heavy accents. Her students said some Mainers ignored them or were unfriendly toward them because of their accents. They said this made them less likely to speak.
32.Why do some immigrants have difficulty making themselves understood?
A.Their classes aren't taught in English.
B.They don't master English at school.
C.They speak English with heavy accents.
D.They don't speak English fluently.
33.Why did Nyirabahizi and other students attend the free class?
A.To change their low social positions.
B.To hide their identities of immigrants.
C.To forget their native languages.
D.To help them better work and communicate.
34.What is some Mainers' attitude toward immigrants with heavy accents?
A.Grateful. B.Cold.
C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Immigrants Learn to Change Their Accents
B.Immigrants Are Required to Speak Well
C.Heavy Accents Cause Failures
D.Good English Makes Success

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Learning English can be hard, but don't give up! With enough practice and right ways, you can learn the language well. __36__.
Watch movies and TV shows in English. __37__. This will make it more fun, which will help you actually learn English. However, you should avoid watching movies or television shows with subtitles (字幕) in your native language—they will take your attention away and you will be less likely to learn English from it.
Read a book, newspaper or magazine in English. __38__. Find something you like—whether that's a famous English novel or a fashion magazine—and read it. Try to understand what you're reading. Mark words that you don't know, and look them up in the dictionary.
__39__. Aside from reading and listening in English, you should also spend some time improving your written English skills. Writing in English will help you to work on your sentence structure (句型), grammar and spelling. Try keeping an English diary where you write down a few sentences every day. It doesn't have to be personal—you could write about the weather, or what you ate for dinner.
Find a pen pal who is a native English speaker. Once your written English has improved, you could consider getting an English speaking pen pal! Your pen pal could be a native English speaker who wants to practice their foreign language skills by writing to you in your native language. Meanwhile you can talk with your pen pal in English. __40__.
A.Keep a diary in English
B.Here are some tips for you
C.Develop good speaking and writing skills

Eleven year old Kristina shouted on the phone. Vera, her mother, packing lunches for her two children, heard the shouting and dashed to Kristina. Kristina gave her the phone. Kristina was talking to her father at his doctor's office in Moscow, Russia.
“Vlad, why is Kristina shouting?” began Vera in Russian.
“Vera, this afternoon I must attend a conference at her school. But I cannot be there. I have an important meeting. Why don't you attend it?” Vlad replied.
“How can I go?”
“You are not going to a forest. You'll be fine!”
“I know, but I can't speak English properly. It's a rule at her school.”
“You can manage. GO!”
Vera turned to Kristina, “Kristina, your father is busy. I will come instead of him.”
Kristina shouted, “Mother, you can't speak English. How can you come to the conference? NO!” She plowed through her mother and ran sobbing. But Vera convinced Kristina. As there was no option, she agreed and left for school.
Vera was depressed. She felt that if only she knew English, she could avoid such situations. But “how is it possible for me to learn English while balancing so many tasks?” Suddenly, she realized that Andrei was getting late, so she got him ready and walked him to school.
In the afternoon, Vera attended the conference at the school. All the teachers and staff gave a warm welcome to Vera. Kristina kept quieting her mother. All she said were phrases like, “You are embarrassing me!” “Stop talking!” and “You do not know English!” Ignoring her daughter's comments, Vera managed to keep her cool and finished the meeting.
After delivering a cake to a customer, Vera went home to start dinner. At home, she asked her mother in law where Kristina was. She said that Kristina had gone to study with her friends. While they were talking, Kristina walked in.
Vera asked, “Why did you go out? You can study at home, you know!”
“I have doubts about English Literature. Can YOU clarify them?” Kristina said in an arrogant (傲慢的) tone.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
At dinner, Vera complained about Kristina's behavior to Vlad. The next day, she saw an advertisement from LCC, The London Language Center, on the TV.

Hello, my name is John Williams. I am an English teacher. And I have started a website to help you improve English listening and speaking skills as quickly as possible. You can also download the sound files to your computer and do exercises with them and take your lessons again any time. Every day, you'll learn some new English vocabulary, idioms and phrasal verbs, and you'll feel more confident in working and making friends in English. 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

29.What does the underlined phrase “jotted down” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Wrote down. B.Left behind.
C.Looked for. D.Settled down.
答案:A

30.Last week, Lily regretted sending her boys to watch a tennis game mainly because ________.
A.she thought the game was boring
B.she wanted to spend time with her boys
C.she didn't dress her boys in thick clothes
D.her boys got lost

31.According to the passage, in British English ________.
A.the word “pissed” means “angry”

35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Immigrants Learn to Change Their Accents
B.Immigrants Are Required to Speak Well

Dear Jack,
I have had a hard time learning English since I entered senior high school, so I am writing to seek some guidance on how to improve it.
English writing is really a big challenge for me. First of all, my vocabulary is not large, which makes it impossible for me to use right words and phrases. Besides, English grammar is an obstacle to progress in my English writing, and the sentences I construct are much of Chinglish expression.
I would appreciate it if you can give me some advice. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Wang Ming
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
At dinner, Vera complained about Kristina's behavior to Vlad. The next day, she saw an advertisement from LCC, The London Language Center, on the TV.

写前导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了不会说英语的Vera (维拉)因丈夫工作繁忙,不得已去参加女儿的家长会。家长会要求参加者必须会说英语,所以Vera全程都受到了女儿的无理提醒和轻视。她下定决心做什么?有什么结果?

At dinner, Vera complained about Kristina's behavior to Vlad. But he laughed and said, “Well, if you knew English, Kristina would not have to suffer like this.” Then he added, “This food is delicious. At least you are good at something!” That night, Vera was tossing and turning as she thought about her hurt feelings. “Like father, like daughter. If my husband doesn't respect me, then how can my children respect me? I must learn English. No matter how hard it may be, I must master English,” she thought.
The next day, she saw an advertisement from LCC, The London Language Center, on the TV. They offered English classes to newcomers. Vera called their number and signed up for a four week course. Every day, she managed to attend the class. She grasped every chance to communicate in English. In the last week, she passed the test and announced the good news to the family in English. Kristina excitedly hugged her and said, “Congratulations, Mum! I am proud of you and sorry for what I said.” Vera smiled happily and felt, “With determination, anything is possible.”

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分 50 分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
篇章导读:本文是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了四种很酷的语言。
21.What is a feature of Arabic?
A.It doesn't have cursive style fonts.
B.It helps artists with their artworks.
C.It is written from right to left.
D.It is closely related to music.
解析:细节理解题。根据Arabic部分中的“Arabic is written ... many other languages.”可知,阿拉伯语从右往左写。故选C。
22.Which language is the most widely used as a second language in the world?
A.Arabic. B.English.
C.Chinese. D.Italian.
解析:细节理解题。根据English部分中的“English is the most widely spoken second language”可知,作为第二语言使用最广泛的是英语。故选B。
23.What's the number of people who speak Italian?
A.Nearly 68 million.
B.Around 370 million.
C.Over 379 million.
D.Around 1.4 billion.
解析:细节理解题。根据Italian部分中的“Nearly 68 million people speak Italian.”可知,近6,800万人说意大利语。故选A。

篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了随着年龄的增长,作者不能适应英语语言变化及其对此的担忧。
24.What did the author probably meet with?
A.Hearing loss.
B.Cultural shock.
C.A language barrier.
D.A frightening robot.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But when I ... often similarly confused.”以及第三段中的“I had no idea what ‘Venmo’ meant, so I asked.”可知,作者遇到了语言障碍,时常无法理解学生们谈论的内容。故选C。
25.What makes the author fall behind in language?
A.Learning needs.
B.Teaching tasks.
C.Age difference.
D.Language abuse.
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“One of the ... not on board.”可知,日益增长的年龄差使作者在语言上落后,无法理解年轻的学生们所说的内容。故选C。
26.What does the author think of language change?
A.It is entirely avoidable.
B.It is really small.
C.It is very beneficial.
D.It is much too rapid.
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“I am not against change ... by my fingernails.”可知,语言变化的速度让作者无所适从,由此可推知,作者认为语言变化的速度太快。故选D。
27.What does the underlined word “wanes” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Lessens. B.Grows.
C.Happens. D.Focuses.
解析:词义猜测题。根据第五段中的“I congratulate myself ... to understand their explanations (我庆幸自己至少对他们谈论的内容感兴趣,也庆幸自己有能力——在很大程度上——理解他们的解释)”和第六段中的“But”可推知,画线词所在句意为“如果我的兴趣减弱,语言之船最终消失在地平线上,会发生什么?”,因此wane意为“减退,减少”,与lessen意思相近。故选A。
C
篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。作者通过生活中的一些例子讲述了英式英语和美式英语中一些词在使用上的差异。
28.When Lily used the word “larder”, she was probably looking for a ______.
A.cup B.ladder
C.cupboard D.cooker
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food.”可推知,Lily (莉莉)在寻找一个可以储存食物的东西,cupboard(橱柜)符合语境。故选C。
29.What does the underlined phrase “jotted down” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Wrote down. B.Left behind.
C.Looked for. D.Settled down.
解析:词义猜测题。根据画线短语下文“the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar”可知,此处在对比英式英语和美式英语在记时间方面用词上的差异,作者在日历上做标记,而Lily则把约会和时间记在了日记本上。由此可知,画线短语意为“记下,写下”。故选A。
30.Last week, Lily regretted sending her boys to watch a tennis game mainly because ________.
A.she thought the game was boring
B.she wanted to spend time with her boys
C.she didn't dress her boys in thick clothes
D.her boys got lost
解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中的“an early morning tennis game”和“I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like those.”可推知,Lily后悔送她的孩子们去看网球比赛主要是因为她没给孩子们穿厚一点的衣服。故选C。
31.According to the passage, in British English ________.
A.the word “pissed” means “angry”
B.the word “jacket” is often used
C.the word “engaged” means “tired”
D.the word “rubber” means “eraser”
解析:细节理解题。根据第四段中的“she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber”可知,“eraser”在英国被叫做“rubber”。故选D。
D
篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了波特兰市开设了免费的语言课程,帮助居住在美国东北部缅因州的移民纠正口音,让他们更好地生活和工作。
32.Why do some immigrants have difficulty making themselves understood?
A.Their classes aren't taught in English.
B.They don't master English at school.
C.They speak English with heavy accents.
D.They don't speak English fluently.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段中的“They speak English ... have heavy accents.”可知,有些移民很难让别人理解他们是因为他们说英语的口音很重。故选C。
33.Why did Nyirabahizi and other students attend the free class?
A.To change their low social positions.
B.To hide their identities of immigrants.
C.To forget their native languages.
D.To help them better work and communicate.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段“She attended a free class ... ‘It affects every part of their lives.’”可知,Nyirabahizi和其他学生参加免费课程是为了帮助他们更好地工作和交流。故选D。
34.What is some Mainers' attitude toward immigrants with heavy accents?
A.Grateful. B.Cold.
C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.
解析:推理判断题。根据最后一段可知,一些缅因州人对说重口音英语的人很不耐烦,并且因为他们的口音而忽视他们,或者对他们不友好。由此可推知,一些缅因州人对重口音移民的态度是冷漠的。故选B。
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Immigrants Learn to Change Their Accents
B.Immigrants Are Required to Speak Well
C.Heavy Accents Cause Failures
D.Good English Makes Success
解析:标题判断题。通读全文可知,文章主要说明了波特兰市开设了免费的语言课程,帮助居住在美国东北部缅因州的移民纠正口音,让他们更好地生活和工作。由此可知,A项(移民学习改变他们的口音)最适合作为文章标题。故选A。

Dear Jack,
I have had a hard time learning English since I entered senior high school, so I am writing to seek some guidance on how to improve it.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
At dinner, Vera complained about Kristina's behavior to Vlad. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍
