Make the Most of College
Dear Daughter,
As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind.
First, I want to tell you how proud we are. Getting into Columbia is a real proof of what a great well rounded student you are. You should be as proud of yourself as we are.
Your college years will be the most important of your life. It is in college that you will discover what learning is about. This will be the period where you go from teacher taught to master inspired, after which you must become self learner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isn't critical for your life, the learning skills you acquire will be something you will value forever.
Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Don't be trapped by what others think or say, but make up your own mind.
Most importantly, make friends and be happy. College friends are often the best in life. Pick a few friends and become really close to them—pick the ones who are genuine to you. Don't worry about their hobbies, grades, looks or even personalities.
Start planning early—what would you like to do? Where would you like to live? What would you like to learn? I think your plan to study fashion is good, and you should decide where you want to be, and get onto the right courses.
Whether it is summer planning, or coursework planning, or picking a major, or managing your time, you should take control of your life. I will always be there for you, but the time has come for you to be in the driver's seat—this is your life, and you need to be in control. Being in control feels great. Try it, and you'll love it!
College is the four years where you have:
the greatest amount of free time
the first chance to be independent
the most flexibility to change
the lowest risk for making mistakes
So please treasure your college years—make full use of your free time, become an independent thinker in control of your destiny, be brave to experiment, learn and grow through your successes and challenges.
May your years at Columbia be the happiest of your life, and may you blossom into just what you dream to be.
Love,
Dad (& Mom)

I'd say I quarrel with my parents a lot. Throughout high school, I was always jealous of some of my friends who didn't seem to have those problems at home, but I've come to see over the years that no one's situation is perfect.
Part of the reason I work all week during my break, in addition to the money, of course, is to be out of the house to avoid continuing quarrels. At work, I eat lunch with my friend Krysta every day, but the best days are when our favourite workmate, Lucy, is on her lunch break at the same time as us. Her funny way of storytelling always has us laughing happily, and although she is almost old enough to be our mom, she feels more like a best friend.
A few weeks ago, however, there was a change in our lunch conversation, and the story she told had us in real tears instead of our usual tears of laughter. A more serious topic had come up, and she sat us down to explain the importance of forgiveness (宽恕), especially when it came to our parents. Telling stories of her troubled relationship with her mother, she changed my whole outlook on life and my feelings towards my parents. She reminded us that no matter how much resentment (怨恨) we're feeling in a moment of anger, we have to be thankful for the support they provide and learn to forgive everything else.
This week I've spent my break at home, having very small quarrels and lots of quality time together with my parents. Sometimes you need a reminder to make you realize how important it is to let go of past resentment and work to repair broken relationships. My workmate's moving stories not only brought me to tears in the break room at work that day but served as that wake up call as well.
24.Why was the author jealous of some of her friends?
A.They didn't have to work all week.
B.They didn't need to do housework.
C.They got along well with their parents.
D.They could spend much time with their parents.
25.What do we know about Lucy?
A.She likes to have lunch on her own.
B.She is about the author's age.
C.She has a sense of humor.
D.She is a poor talker.
26.What happened to the author a few weeks ago?
A.She was taught a lesson by Lucy.
B.She was moved by Lucy's mother.
C.She laughed happily at Lucy's stories.
D.She discussed her problems with Lucy.
27.What message does the author most want to give us?
A.We shouldn't waste valuable family time.
B.We should show thanks to our parents.
C.We shouldn't quarrel with our parents.
D.We should forgive all but ourselves.
C
The middle child, I think, is now an “endangered species”. According to a study, in 1976, 65 percent of mothers aged between 40 and 44 had three or more children. Today, nearly two thirds of women with children have only one or two. Middle children will soon be the tiniest.
As a middle child, I am disappointed at the potential disappearance of middle children. I'm the middle of three—two boys, one girl—so I'm what's sometimes regarded as a “classic middle child”.
Being a middle child is not something you are eager for. As one middle child said to me, “There is a thing called middle child syndrome (综合征). I certainly was always aware that the middle was not a position to be admired, even as I came to see typical middle child features in myself. Middle children are natural mediators (和事佬); I avoid disagreements and habitually act as the family peace maker. Middle children tend to be private but also long for love; I keep to myself but do not exactly hate attention.”
According to studies, middles traditionally receive less economic and emotional support from their parents. They also typically have less close relationships with their mothers and fathers compared with other brothers or sisters, so they tend to have more friends to fill the feeling gap.
In a study conducted by the City College of New York in which participants were asked to choose words they associate with the first, last, and middle kids, positive words such as caring and ambitious were cited concerning all three birth orders. Only middles, however, were described with such negative terms as overlooked and confused. More importantly, middles may be many things and they were the only birth order with which no one connected the term “overindulged”. It is true: their parents couldn't allow them to do or have whatever they want, especially when they are enough old, and they don't ask for everything either even if they are eager to own it occasionally.
28.Why does the author mention the study in Paragraph 1?
A.To inform a definition.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To make a comparison.
D.To support his opinion.
29.What can we learn about “middle child syndrome”?
A.It is dangerous for middles to suffer from it.
B.It clearly shows the typical features of middles.
C.It is what non middle kids admire and wish for.
D.It is the result of the unsuccessful parenting style.
30.Who is an overindulged kid according to Paragraph 5?
A.John, 3, asking his mother for dressing him.
B.Mary, 8, busy in focusing on her preference.
C.Paul, 12, unwilling to have breakfast by himself.
D.Nancy, 17, afraid to challenge the math problems.
31.What's the author's opinion about middles according to the passage?
A.They are always in low spirits.
B.They stress the protection of privacy.
C.They are ignored but independent.
D.They support the family economically.
D
Children are often exposed to diet culture from a young age and its negative impacts can be long lasting, according to Virginia Smith, author of a new book titled Fat Talk, Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture.
“Kids, at a very young age, start to become aware of body shaming,” Smith said. “The main factors of children's future eating disorder (饮食失调) are kids' being ashamed of their weight and their history of dieting in childhood.”
In Fat Talk, Smith argues that one way parents can fight back against this is to take a fresh look at the word “fat”. “We can understand ‘fat’ as just a neutral body descriptor, just like saying tall or short or brown hair, black hair ...” Smith said. “If your child in a bigger body comes to you, and he says, ‘Am I fat?’ you should be honest with him and say, ‘You're fat. And there's definitely nothing wrong with that. We love your body just the way it is.’”
Another suggestion from Smith is for parents to change conversations with and in front of children at home. “We can say I'm not going to shame my body in front of my kids and I'm going to celebrate bodies in all shapes and sizes,” Smith recommended. David Anderson, a parenting expert, added, “So if you have a child who's in a bigger body, talk about their strengths.” David continued, “Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals ... these are things we can remind our kids about every single day.”
Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but David said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. But as children grow older, David encourages parents to be honest with kids about their own struggles and not to pretend they know everything and that kids know nothing about diet culture.
32.What might contribute to children's future eating disorder?
A.Body shape and peer pressure.
B.Body image and parenting style.
C.Body change and food preference.
D.Body shame and dieting experience.
33.What can be learned from Paragraph 3?
A.Kids should make peace with their body image.
B.Kids should take pride in being overweight.
C.Parents should teach their kids honesty.
D.Parents should give “fat” a positive definition.
34.What should kids focus on according to David Anderson?
A.Their body functions.
B.Their individual characters.
C.Their physical appearance.
D.Their career achievements.
35.What does the underlined word “shield” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Editor. B.Supporter.
C.Protector. D.Connector.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My dad was a cleaner in my school. When I was 12, I decided to study hard to have a life different from his.
One day when Dad asked me to play basketball with him, I just replied, “I'm busy. I want to study well so that I can become a rich man. I don't want to be a cleaner like you, Dad!” He was shocked (震惊的), but I didn't care and continued studying hard. Finally, I graduated from high school with honors, and decided it was time to break free from my dad and follow my dreams.
“Dad, I got a scholarship to a law school in California,” I told him. “I'll leave in 3 days.” My dad was surprised but proud of me. As I left for the airport 3 days later, he said, “Son, wherever you go, welcome back home.” I ignored his words and flew to California.
After I graduated, I found a great job there. Later, I was made manager and earned much money. I no longer remembered my father was a cleaner. I had forgotten my dad, who was still cleaning my school. I seldom answered his calls or wrote back to him. I was busy; I still had a lot more to achieve.
With time, the more success I tasted, somehow, the lonelier I became. I felt especially lonely on my 31st birthday. I kept checking my phone, hoping someone wished me a happy birthday. But there wasn't a single call or message. Later that evening when I returned home from my office, something in my mailbox drew my attention.
“A letter?” I whispered and saw it was from my father. He never forgot to mail me a letter on my each birthday. However, I never took the trouble to read it. “How did I ignore him?” I thought. I brought the letter home and took out his earlier letters. And I opened one. It read, “Wherever you are, I love you to the last drop of my blood. I wish you a happy life.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I picked up another letter and read it. Finally, I arrived at my dad's house and saw him sitting alone in the yard.

M:Hello, welcome to this week's Meeting Artists. Our guest today is Mildred Howard. She will talk about her story with gardens. Welcome, Mrs Howard. W:Thank you. To begin with, I'd like to share my childhood memories. Well, my parents had gardens. So I could always pick fresh tomatoes, pull out carrots and taste sweet melons. M:Interesting! Many kids don't know where food comes from. W:That's why I started the Alice Waters Garden Project. M:Can you tell us something about it? For example, how does it work? W:We design and build a 5 acre garden first. The kids, mainly aged from 7 to 12, work in the garden with their hands in the dirt. Text 10
I was born without hands and feet. It's a rare condition. Living through difficulties has made me who I am today. My parents helped me develop tools to overcome my challenges. When I was 2, my dad decided that my family would stop helping me eat. He knew that one day I'd live on my own, so I'd have to look after myself. I learned to eat with a spoon, and then with a knife and a fork. It gave me a sense of accomplishment. My darkest moment came when I was 10. My family moved from Indiana to Georgia. In Indiana, my friends treated me as normal. But in Georgia, it was different. I felt very aware of my disability. I felt hopeless about the future. My world changed when I got into sports. I started playing football. Everything came together when I made my first kick at age 11. It was my first real achievement. Then I decided to start wrestling. I had an amazing coach who helped me invent moves that took advantage of my strength. I eventually finished 12th in the 103 pound weight class in the championships. I keep going in the face of difficulties.

A.To inform a definition.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To make a comparison.

31.What's the author's opinion about middles according to the passage?
A.They are always in low spirits.
B.They stress the protection of privacy.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I picked up another letter and read it. Finally, I arrived at my dad's house and saw him sitting alone in the yard.

I picked up another letter and read it. “Son, I'm really proud of you every day, every minute, and every second,” it began as my glasses were fogged up. After I read all the letters, tears rushed out of my eyes. I was touched by my dad's deep love for me and felt so regretful about not valuing it! Before long, I packed my things and went to the airport to meet my dad after so many years. “Will he be happy to see me? How will I face him?” I wondered.
Finally, I arrived at my dad's house and saw him sitting alone in the yard. He looked up and rose in surprise and delight as my shadow was cast upon him. He hugged me and cried before I could even greet him. “I've been waiting for your coming every single day, son!” he wept on my shoulder. After that, I quit the job in California and lived with my dad. I realized money isn't everything. It cannot buy things as precious as love and family.

18.Why did the speaker's father decide to stop helping him eat?
A.To correct his bad habit.
B.To push him to be independent.
C.To give him a sense of accomplishment.
19.How did the speaker feel about his life in Georgia before getting into sports?
A.Depressed.
B.Relaxed.
C.Hopeful.
20.At what age did the speaker have his first real achievement?

B.Kids should take pride in being overweight.
C.Parents should teach their kids honesty.
D.Parents should give “fat” a positive definition.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

[精彩范文]
