AFTER TWENTY YEARS
The short story “After Twenty Years” is set in New York on a cold, dark night. Most people have left work to go home, and1 this part of the city is now quiet. A policeman who2 is checking the area sees a man outside a shop. He goes up to the man and finds he has a scar on his face3 . They have a chat and4 the man starts to tell his story. “Twenty years ago tonight,” said the man, “I dined here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady's with Jimmy Wells, my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and I were raised here in New York, just like two brothers, together. I was eighteen and5 Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune6 . You couldn't have dragged Jimmy out of New York; he thought it was the only place on earth7 . Well, we agreed that night that8 we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what9 our conditions might be or from what10 distance we might have to come. We figured that11 in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made12 , whatever13 they were going to be.” “It sounds pretty interesting,” said the policeman. “Rather a long time between meets, though, it seems to me. Haven't you heard from your friend since14 you left?” “Well, yes, for a time we corresponded,” said the other. “But after a year or two we lost track of each other. You see, the West is a pretty big proposition, and15 I kept hustling around over it pretty lively. But I know Jimmy will meet me here16 if17 he's alive, for18 he always was the truest, staunchest old chap in the world. He'll never forget. I came a thousand miles to stand in this door tonight, and19 it's worth it if20 my old partner turns up.” (Excerpts from “After Twenty Years” by O. Henry) “嗯,不是的。

9.We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be.(教材P60)
【分析】 that引导宾语从句;have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made为“have+宾语+宾语补足语”结构,其中过去分词短语worked out和过去分词made分别作宾语our destiny和our fortunes的补足语;whatever引导让步状语从句。
此时have可用get/make替换。

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is that their friends just aren't there for them. More than that, sometimes friends are downright rude or even mean. You can't change people, but you can surround yourself with more positive people. Here are some benefits that spending time with positive friends can provide.
With positive friends, you don't need to beg for help when you need it because chances are that they will be there for you without asking. Positive individuals want others to be happy, and will go out of their way to help you when you're feeling down. As Guide to Stress states, “Ideal friendships provide support when you're down, fun when you're up, wisdom when you're lost.”
Compare that to toxic friends, who might snipe at (诽谤,中伤) you or even laugh at you behind your back. Negative people celebrate the downfall of others, and as a result you'll end up feeling worse about yourself or the situation you're dealing with. Friends who aren't positive will add to whatever amount of stress you are feeling.
Your positive friends will not only help you recover from negative hits you take in life, but they will also inspire you to be the best you can be. For example, perhaps you always wanted to be a writer. The negative people in your life will probably tell you all the reasons why you won't succeed. But who needs that? Chances are you have already gone over the reasons why you might fail and this is what has prevented you from trying. But with positive people in your life, you'll feel more comfortable sharing these types of goals because your friends will give you the emotional push you need to go after what you want in life.
You naturally attract the kinds of friends who are most like you. So if you're a downer, you'll probably find that negative people come to you. The__same__is__true__for__being__positive. The more you are able to keep a positive attitude, the more like minded people you'll attract in return.

My Opinions on Friendship
If you ask me what the most rewarding thing in the world is, I will tell you it is friendship. To me, friendship is like the sun in the sky, and it lights up my life. When I have trouble studying well, I can ask my friends for help. Besides, when I'm successful, I can share my happiness with them.
As for the suggestions about making friends, the following are mine. First of all, I think we should be sincere in making friends. Secondly, I don't think that the number of friends is the key, but a few true friends are enough for me. Finally, I think it is important to make friends who have the same interests as me.

During my school years, I had only one close friend. We spent years together, and we were inseparable, in or out of school. But then Greg moved away, and I never thought it would take more than 40 years to bring us together again.
As children, Greg and I dove into everything with passion. At that time, we were pure (纯真的) and kind, full of curiosity and expectation for life. We raced our bikes and illustrated (给书加插图) our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same girl from around the corner, a sixth grader named Joanne who barely (几乎不) knew we existed.
The last time I saw Greg was sometime in 1966. It was so short a meeting that I couldn't recall saying goodbye before he moved. Since then, we lost touch.
But then, a few summers ago, I saw a familiar woman. “Excuse me. Would your name happen to be Joanne?”
“Uh, yes ... ” She didn't recognise me until I explained who I was. We hadn't exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime. “Have you stayed in touch with Greg?” she asked. I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.
“No, I haven't,” I admitted. “I wish I had.”
Back at the office I checked my messages. I received one email, and then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg.
Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician and entrepreneur (企业家). We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone. A month later, my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family in person.

Standing in front of his house, I began to get nervous. I didn't know what to say or do. So much time had passed and a lot of memories seemed to have been blurred. But after hugs and introductions, the years dissolved as we exchanged stories about our lives. I had brought along the only picture I could find containing the two of us from my sixth birthday. The picture is a witness to our friendship in the past.
Seeing the photo, Greg handed me a small, old card. It was written “Greg's invitation to my sixth birthday party”, signed “From Donnie” in faded blue crayon. Although the card had turned yellow, it could be seen that he kept it carefully for many years. There were a few other things shared that evening, but none as meaningful as the invitation and the picture. They were stored apart but saved for the reunion of two old friends. True friendship does not fade with time.
One sunny morning, the sun began to rise, casting a warm golden glow over the park. Two young men named Tom and Jerry, who were lost in their own books, found themselves sitting on opposite ends of a bench. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the distant sound of children playing. Their eyes met for a brief moment before they both bent down to pick up their pens. It seemed as if they had known before. They quickly became friends and then began to spend many happy times together. They played basketball, watched movies, and spent many unforgettable days together. However, as time went on, their lives changed, and their friendship was put to the test.
A few years later, Tom became a successful lawyer, while Jerry chose a different path and became an artist. Despite different kinds of changes in their lifestyles, they still kept in touch and would gather together every once in a while to recall the good old days.
One day, Tom received a letter from Jerry. The letter said, “Dear Tom, I hope you can come and visit my art exhibition. I know you may not be interested in art, but I think you will like these works. They are all paintings I made during the days we spent together. I hope you can feel the friendship between us.”
After reading the letter, Tom immediately decided to attend Jerry's art exhibition. He bought a bunch of flowers as a gift and arrived at the exhibition site. When he walked into the exhibition hall, he was shocked by what he saw. The walls were filled with Jerry's works, each painting full of life and emotion. He saw scenes of them playing basketball in the park, watching movies together, and walking in the rain. These paintings made him feel the deep friendship between them.

1.Who are probably your true friends according to the passage?
A.Those who you can change gradually.
B.Those who will stay with you when you're in need.
C.Those who will not turn to you whenever in trouble.
D.Those who are always polite and never waste anything.
2.Why does the writer mention the statement of Guide to Stress?
A.To emphasize the importance of friendships.
B.To point out everyone may meet with difficulties.
C.To explain to us what ideal friendships are in reality.
D.To compare the differences between success and failure.
3.What does the writer intend to tell us by saying “The same is true for being positive.”?
A.It is true that everyone is positive in life.
B.If you are positive, you'll attract positive friends.
C.The negative people don't like the positive ones.
D.The positive people would like to stay with everyone.
4.Which of the following is conveyed in this passage?
A.Positive friends can benefit you a lot.
B.Friendship is love with understanding.
C.Old friends and old wine are the best.
D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
故选A。
