For as long as I can remember, my parents raised me with dogs, cats, birds and fish in the house, and I felt the most comfort with these pets in my surroundings. As an only child, I grew up talking to these animals since I never had a partner to play with at home.
I created characters for each of the pets and I included them in my imaginary adventures, tying capes onto the dogs, who were changed into superheroes, and giving headwear to the cats, who became girls. Even after I began attending pre school, I'd eagerly await my return from school so that I could relay all the exciting details to my pets who would listen and pretend to be slightly interested in my wandering. In fact, I probably communicated with my pets more than I did with my friends, since these animals offered a sense of safety which no individual could provide. It never felt strange for me to talk with members of different species and I always felt satisfied after I spoke with them.
Imagine the shock I faced when I realized that certain cruel persons badly treated their pets. Over the spring break of third grade when I visited Aunt Judy and my cousins in Philadelphia, I met her one eyed cat, Gordon, a cold, skinny creature. I firstly avoided directing my attention towards the cat. Aunt Judy must have noticed my strange behavior, so she took me aside and explained that the Gordon's owner had deserted him. The cat was extremely unhealthy and injured when Aunt Judy discovered him.
After she had found medical treatments for the cat, my aunt decided to keep him because Aunt Judy said, “The unwanted animals are the ones most in need of someone to love them wholeheartedly.” After my aunt's advice, I spent additional time to know Gordon and as days passed, he grew less afraid of me and I became more willing to love him.

No creature loves such a lonely end to their life.

It broke my heart to see his sad eyes. Gordon's left eye was lifeless, like a window into his soul. His body was frail, thin, and shivering, as if he had been abandoned for weeks. But even in his weakest moments, Gordon still had trust in humans. Every time I approached him, he would lift his head slightly and look at me with his one good eye, as if pleading for help.
No creature loves such a lonely end to their life. Gordon's story is a reminder of the millions of animals who suffer in silence, waiting for someone to rescue them from their pain. As I got to know Gordon better, I realized that every life, no matter how small, deserves to be loved and cared for. His trust in me grew day by day, and I vowed to be the one to give him a better life. With Aunt Judy's help, I began to understand that every creature has a story, and it's up to us to give them a happy ending.

From 1990 to 2000, fishermen trying to get swordfish (剑鱼) off the coast of California accidentally caught and killed over 100 sea turtles, and injured many more. In 2001, the government set up the Pacific Leatherback Conservation Area (PLCA), an area off the coast of California where fishing boats are not allowed to enter from August to November. Since then, the number of turtles killed by mistake has fallen rapidly, but a small number of animals still die from being caught in fishing nets each year. And at the same time, the once $15 million swordfish industry has become a $2 million industry.
Scientists are hoping to find a way to not only protect sea turtles and other endangered creatures but also help fishermen make a living. For this, many scientists are looking at dynamic ocean management to help fishing boats meet fish where they are and avoid catching other creatures by mistake.
The first paper to suggest that the fish living in the open ocean should be guarded with fluid, ever changing zones of protection, came out in 2000. Larry Crowder, a professor at Hopkins Marine Station, remembers reading it and thinking, “Cool idea, but it will never work.” In 2000, scientists didn't have the computer power to cheaply test statistical models or deal with satellite data quickly. They didn't have enough data dealing with fish or satellite data on ocean conditions, either.
Now scientists can download satellite data of oceans in minutes and attach satellite archival tag to sea animals to track their movements. They first collect data by marking the creatures, collecting reports from fishing boats, or other tracking ways. Then they compare that data with weather conditions, the time of year, and any other data that can be sensed. Finally, they can predict where fish probably are.
Crowder and his workmates used the data to develop a tool called EcoCast. During the 2012 and 2015 fishing seasons, they could have fished in at least 125,000 square miles, without high risk of hunting turtles.

根据第三段中的“Larry Crowder ... it will never work. (霍普金斯海洋站的教授Larry Crowder (拉里·克劳德)记得,他读到这个想法时心想:‘这个想法很酷,但行不通。’)”可推知,Larry Crowder最初认为动态海洋管理是不切实际的。故选A。
3.What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.A great way to collect data.
B.Some technology fruits in this field.
C.A scientific way to find new ocean animals.
D.The way dynamic ocean management works.
4.What should be the advantage of using EcoCast?
A.It protects the ocean from pollution.
B.It helps support the fishing industry.
C.It prevents fishermen from getting lost while fishing.
D.It both protects ocean animals and supports the fishing industry.

1.The government hoped that PLCA and its rules could ________.
A.prevent fishing in the PLCA
B.help collect data for future research
C.protect the creatures in the area to some degree
D.make the public realize the importance of our environment
2.Larry Crowder thought dynamic ocean management was ________ at first.
A.unrealistic B.stupid
C.possible D.interesting
