On a cool gray morning, Wilson Kasaine heads out along a dirt path in southern Kenya. His calmness makes it easy to forget that he's tracking one of the most dangerous animals in the world: lions. Born into a traditional Maasai family, he quickly grew to understand the beauty and danger of wildlife. Living with big wild animals forces him to develop a good sense of where they have been and where they may be going. During his 12 kilometer walks to and from school, he learned how to tell the paw prints of a lion from those of other animals.
Growing up, Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid surprise meetings with dangerous animals. For many Maasai, tracking is mainly a matter of self protection. But Kasaine is tracking lions to meet them and to protect them. He leads a small group of wide eyed tourists over the red sandy path, searching for the lion that has left upon it his prints.
Each year, thousands of tourists crowd Kenya's national parks to try to catch a glimpse of the the “big five”: elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes and lions. The international draw of these animals matters a lot because the nation's economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenya's wildlife disappears, so does its second largest source of income.
Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya meant marking off land only for animals. But it also meant that the people who had originally lived in the area were forced to leave their land and into smaller surrounding areas, and they are also finding it increasingly hard to keep a traditional Maasai lifestyle. But people are glad that it really makes a difference to wildlife protection.
24.How did Kasaine track lions?
A.By working together with tourists.
B.By running after them all the time.
C.By going to school every day.
D.By studying their paw prints.
25.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Maasai people are born animal lovers.
B.Tourism is a big threat to Kenya's wildlife.
C.Kenya benefits a lot from its wildlife protection.
D.Small animals are not included in their protection policy.
26.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Kenya's economic development.
B.People's leaving their original homes.
C.Kenya's second largest income source.
D.Kenyan people's traditional Maasai lifestyle.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Wildlife Protection in Kenya
B.Meeting a Dangerous Animal
C.Wilson Kasaine's Wise Choice
D.Learning to Live with Lions
C
Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees (大猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator (掠食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Birds called cuckoos (布谷鸟) have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests. Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees,__or__chimps,__can__also__be__sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will put out its hand to the other chimp. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can't fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can't trust her, either.
28.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young
B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest
D.pretending to be injured
29.What does the underlined sentence “Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky.” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Chimps are ready to attack others.
B.Chimps are sometimes dishonest.
C.Chimps are jealous of the winners.
D.Chimps can be selfish too.
30.What can we learn according to the passage?
A.Some chimps lower their cries to keep food away from others.
B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.
C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.
D.Some cuckoos often steal other birds' newborns.
31.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Do Animals Lie?
B.Does Mother Nature Fool Animals?
C.How Do Animals Learn to Lie?
D.How Does Honesty Help Animals Survive?
D
Capybaras (水豚) are group animals, so they do not like being alone. In fact, leaving a capybara alone is not only uncomfortable for the animal, but it can be harmful to their physical health, as well as their mental well being. Capybaras love to talk to each other throughout the day. Groups of capybaras spend their days sunbathing along the edge of rivers, where they enjoy swimming together in the water. They spend half of their lives in the water.
Since they spend so much time around water, it makes sense that capybaras would come into contact with a wide variety of other animals who stop in for a drink. Capybaras are gentle and peaceful river animals who enjoy napping (小睡) along the water's edge—and often do so with other animal species as well. You can find pictures all over the Internet of these lovely animals lying beside turtles, birds, ducks, rats, and even monkeys as they enjoy a nap by the water.
Capybaras are also known to be excellent and friendly taxis in the animal world. Birds and monkeys commonly stand on the back of a capybara for a ride as capybaras search for grass to eat. Sometimes capybaras even serve as boats for other animals, letting them sit on their heads as they swim through the water!
However, if you see a capybara lying on its side with a yellow headed caracara (长腿兀鹰) stopped on its body, don't__panic__just__yet. Most likely the capybara is enjoying a nice spa day. Birds often make friends with capybaras and act as a natural cleaning service, picking off bugs that live in the capybara's fur. It's a symbiotic (共生的) relationship, since the yellow headed caracara also gets to enjoy eating a bunch of tasty bugs.
32.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us about capybaras?
A.Their life habits.
B.Their survival skills.
C.Their appearance.
D.Their risks in health.
33.Why does the author call capybaras “friendly taxis”?
A.They search for food for birds and monkeys.
B.They carry their food by riding on another animal.
C.They allow other animals to stay on their backs or heads.
D.They guide other animals to swim through the water.
34.What does the author mean by saying “don't panic just yet” in the last paragraph?
A.The caracara won't attack you.
B.The capybara won't suffer any injury.
C.The caracara may just take a break.
D.The capybara may be providing its cleaning service.
35.What can we learn about capybaras according to the passage?
A.They hate lying beside lovely animals.
B.They enjoy swimming alone.
C.They are aggressive animals.
D.They can live in harmony with other animal species.

My wife and I went to the Animal Emergency Hospital on a Friday last year. We ended up there with Jack, a beautiful dog. Any pet that is there on that day is in bad trouble as most vets (兽医诊所) are closed.
Jack was seriously ill and they helped him. Before we left we said we were not rich but we wanted to do an act of kindness and gave $1,500 for someone who they thought really needed the help.
Within 18 hours the money ended up helping a single mother whose dog had been bitten (咬) by a snake. She had at least one child with serious illness, so the decision had to be made to help the child with the treatment the mother had booked, or to help the dog. We were able to help the dog so she could support her family. The hospital gave her my phone number and I received a heartfelt message from a stranger saying thank you. The vets also said it restored their faith in humanity and good people, which was nice.
Sadly I lost my best friend Jack almost 2 months ago. He was such a beautiful dog that I feel honored to share my life with him.
A few days later, I went again in the morning to the Animal Emergency Hospital and gave $1,500—something intended for my beautiful dog Jack. And we are still not rich, but acts of kindness are important. The fact is that emergency vets are not cheap for ordinary pet owners.I hope the money can help someone who finds themselves in a terrible situation tomorrow and it helps their family stay together.I talked with some pet owners there and they said that sometimes they really couldn't afford treatment for their pets. I realized that I should do more then.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I invited some of my close friends to my house for a party about pet treatment. I decided to start a rescue group for sick pets.

35.What can we learn about capybaras according to the passage?
A.They hate lying beside lovely animals.
B.They enjoy swimming alone.

I invited some of my close friends to my house for a party about pet treatment. At the party, I asked some dog owners to share photos of their dogs' lives and tell interesting stories about their interaction with pets as well as how the pets helped them. I also invited professionals to talk about some judgments and common rescue methods when pets were sick so that we could avoid aggravating our pet's illness. Everyone benefited saying that they learned a lot about pet therapy from the meeting excitedly. But others cited family difficulties and lack of extra funds to treat their pets.
I decided to start a rescue group for sick pets. On the one hand, I posted online to recruit people who had experience in animal treatment to join our rescue team, and on the other hand, I conducted publicity in various communities to find pets which were in need of rescue help. More and more families in need received timely help, who gave our team great recognition. Helping others made us happy and made our life more meaningful.

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章通过列举一些鸟类和大猩猩的例子,介绍了动物通过不诚实的行为来欺骗其他动物,以更好地生存。
28.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young
B.driving away the adult predator
C.leaving its young in another nest
D.pretending to be injured
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“For example ... protect its young.”可知,鸻通过假装受伤来保护幼鸟不受捕食者的伤害。故选D。

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了水豚的生活习性及与其他动物和谐共生的关系。
32.What does the first paragraph mainly tell us about capybaras?
A.Their life habits.
B.Their survival skills.
C.Their appearance.
D.Their risks in health.
故选A。
33.Why does the author call capybaras “friendly taxis”?
A.They search for food for birds and monkeys.
B.They carry their food by riding on another animal.
C.They allow other animals to stay on their backs or heads.
D.They guide other animals to swim through the water.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Birds and monkeys ... swim through the water!”可知,作者称水豚为“友好的出租车”,是因为它们允许其他动物待在它们的背上或头上“搭便车”。故选C。
34.What does the author mean by saying “don't panic just yet” in the last paragraph?
A.The caracara won't attack you.
B.The capybara won't suffer any injury.
C.The caracara may just take a break.
D.The capybara may be providing its cleaning service.
解析:句意理解题。根据最后一段中的“Most likely the ... in the capybara's fur.”
35.What can we learn about capybaras according to the passage?
A.They hate lying beside lovely animals.
B.They enjoy swimming alone.
C.They are aggressive animals.
D.They can live in harmony with other animal species.
解析:推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Capybaras are gentle ... as well.(水豚是一种温顺平和的河流动物,喜欢在水边小睡,而且也经常与其他动物一起小睡。)”、第三段中的“Capybaras are also known ... the animal world.(水豚在动物世界中也被认为是优秀且友好的‘出租车’。)”、第四段中的“Birds often make friends with capybaras(鸟类经常与水豚交朋友)”可推知,水豚能与其他动物和谐相处。故选D。

Dear Jim,
I'm happy to hear from you. Let me tell you which animal I like best.
It is known to us that animals are our friends. I like animals very much, especially dogs. Most dogs are loyal, friendly, alert, obedient and close to their owners. Nowadays, the reasons why many people love dogs are as follows. First of all, dogs are regarded as loyal friends to people. Besides, they can help people guard their homes. At last, they can accompany people, which can help people relieve loneliness. I like dogs best, but I hope we humans can also live in harmony with other animals.
Yours,

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

[精彩范文]
