Nestled in the heart of a mountain village in China’s Guizhou province, there is a unique ecological family
farm. It is run by Kevin Cillen, a 28-year-old Belgian(比利时人) who is passionate about the land. With his
parents and siblings, they have combined Western farming techniques with local countryside practices to cultivate
an “ecological oasis”
The family’s pursuit of their farming dream in China began in 2000, when Kevin’s mother Hetty Cillen visited
China as a volunteer for the first time. The enchanting landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Guizhou fascinated
her, causing her to make this foreign country her home. Soon after, his father Patrick Jan Cillen joined her. In 2017,
the family rented a plot amid the forest to establish an ecological farm where they laid the foundation, leveling the
land, sowing pastures and rearing lambs and chicks.
The locals have openly embraced the foreigners, inviting them to festivities and celebrating traditional Chinese
holidays together. In 2018, Yang Chengkai, a 34-year-old villager, befriended the family, often assisting them on
the farm. “The community has embraced this family. Even the vendors at the local market contribute by giving
them vegetable scraps for free to feed their livestock.” Yang says.

Known for its role in Game of Thrones (《权力的游戏》), the dire wolf (冰原狼) went extinct over 10,000
years ago. On April 7, the US company Colossal Biosciences announced restoring this species via de-extinction —
a historic first.
Time magazine said scientists studied fossils (化 石 ) such as a 13,000-year-old dire wolf tooth and a
72,000-year-old ear bone and compared their genes to those of gray wolves to discover differences. They edited 14
key genes in gray wolf blood cells to match dire wolf traits(特征), implanting(植入)modified cell’s nuclei (核)
into surrogate (代孕) dogs’ eggs(卵子).
The babies, larger than gray wolves, now live in a preserve. They behaved like wolves by howling at two
weeks old. But “we have not seen them attempt to hunt live prey”, Colossal’s Paige McNickle told Time magazine.
Some scientists have criticized the project. Professor Nic Rawlence from Otago University questioned using
fossil DNA, calling it too damaged to use. “Ancient DNA is like if you put fresh DNA in a 500 degree oven
overnight, it comes out like dust,” Rawlence told the BBC. He argued Colossal actually only created “a hybrid (杂
交品种)” — a gray wolf with dire wolf features.
Colossal isn’t just reviving the dire wolf. Their list includes the woolly mammoth, dodo and Tasmanian tiger.
Their mission goes beyond de-extinction: they also use the same technique to prevent species in danger from

disappearing. For example, they brought back four red wolves, an endangered species, in the same way of restoring
the dire wolf.
The Center for Biological Diversity predicts that 30% of the planet’s genetic diversity could be lost by 2050.
Colossal CEO Ben Lamm argues that genetic engineering is crucial to prevent this loss. Yet some warn there could
be consequences. Introducing new species can cause invasive species, while cloning often leads to health problems
in animals and surrogates.
28. How did scientists try to restore the dire wolves
A. By obtaining DNA from living dire wolves.
B. By hybridizing different modern wolf species.
C. By studying fossils of dire wolf and surrogating.
D. By using complete DNA of dire wolves to clone.
29. What can be learned about the “restored” dire wolf babies
A. They exhibit some wolf-like behaviors.
B. They have already begun hunting live prey.
C. They are bigger in size than adult gray wolves.
D. They are completely the same as the ancient dire wolves.
30. Why does the author mention red wolves in the 5th paragraph
A. To illustrate the variety of revived species.
B. To highlight the importance of biodiversity.
C. To contrast with the dire wolf’s revival process.
D. To show Colossal’s broader conservation efforts.
31. What is the author's attitude towards the de-extinction
A. Opposed and critical. B. Objective and cautious.
C. Supportive and optimistic. D. Humorous and unconcerned.

Over the past twenty years, more than one fifth of the world's oceans have gotten darker, according to a study
from the University of Plymouth. This is called "ocean darkening." It happens when changes at the top of the ocean
make it harder for sunlight to reach deeper waters.
The study, which was published in the journal Global Change Biology, found that 21% of the world's oceans
became darker between 2003 and 2022. The research team thinks this darkening is due to changes in algae(藻类),
changes in sea surface temperatures, and artificial light.
The study showed that more than 9% of the ocean—an area about the size of Africa—has less light by over 50
meters (164 feet). Another 2.6% of the ocean has light reduced by over 100 meters (328 feet). While the full
impacts are unclear, the team notes this could harm marine life and ecosystem services.
Dr. Thomas Davies, lead researcher of the study, said: "Previous research has shown that the color of the
ocean's surface has changed over the last twenty years, maybe because of changes in tiny sea creatures called
plankton(浮游生物). But our study shows these changes cause widespread darkening, making less ocean available
to animals dependent on sunlight and moonlight to live and reproduce.” Dr. Davies also said that ocean darkening
could affect the air we breathe, the fish we eat, and how well we can fight climate change. "Our findings are truly
disquieting." he said.
Prof. Tim Smyth, who works at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, said that some sea animals that need light
might come closer to the surface because of these changes. This could lead to more competition for food and other
resources. He also warned ,"It could cause big changes in the whole marine ecosystem."
32. What is ocean darkening caused by according to the research
A. Increased deep-sea human activities.
B. Algae, sea temperature, and artificial light changes.
C. Expansion of marine species populations.
D. Reduced coastal artificial light.
33. Why does the author mention “an area about the size of Africa” in paragraph 3
A. To emphasize the seriousness of ocean darkening.

{#{QQABIYIlwggQ0NbACL4KEUFmCAmQkIGhJQoMRRCYuAxKiQFAFIA=}#}
B. To compare ocean pollution between continents.
C. To criticize Africa's environmental policies.
D. To explain algae reproduction rates.
34. What does the underlined word “disquieting” mean in paragraph 4
A. Unclear and confusing. B. Exciting and positive.
C. Alarming and concerning. D. Predictable and expected.
35.What is a potential effect of ocean darkening according to Tim Smyth
A. A rise in deep-water oxygen levels.
B. The extinction of light-dependent species.
C. Increased competition for food resources.
D. Reduced artificial light pollution.

In today’s fast-paced world, effective time-management is essential for a balanced life. However, a

share workloads when you’re overwhelmed and ask for advice from supervisors, mentors, or experts in relevant

For instance, you can rank your tasks according to their importance, the degree of difficulty or deadlines, and tackle
the most crucial ones first.
Put regular breaks into your routine. Short breaks enhance concentration and prevent burnout. 39
Activities like light exercise or a quick walk during breaks benefit your both mental and physical well-being, thus
enhancing your overall productivity.
Embrace flexibility. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and your time-management plans shouldn’t be
changeless. 40

Over the summer I moved from Texas to Missouri. I was really nervous about starting a new school. I decided
that I would be much happier in a new school if I made friends that were so-called “popular”. Getting in with the
right group of people would make my life a whole lot better. I bought a new outfit(服装), expecting the first day
would be perfect.
On the first day of school, scared, yet eager to begin my new life, I walked up the stairs. My first class was
geometry(几何学), but where was it I was standing in the hall looking confused, when a short, blond girl wearing
glasses came up and asked, “Are you new You look lost. Do you want me to help you find your class My name is
Diane. What’s yours ” Though she seemed a bit strange, definitely not the kind of person I wanted to be associated
with, I decided to answer her anyway. I was, after all, lost. After exchanging names, I followed her up the stairs and
down a hallway on the right. When we reached my room she said, “Well, here you are. It was nice meeting you. I
hope I see you again and your day goes all right.” I said a quick thank-you and waved good-bye.
Once inside the classroom, I saw one big group of people huddled around(聚集) someone who seemed to be
telling some sort of story. I walked over and got close enough to overhear. All eyes were glued to the guy in the
middle of the circle. I decided that this guy was popular.
A few minutes later the teacher told everyone to find a seat and get ready for the class. I managed to get one
right next to the guy. I said, “Hi, my name is April and I’m new here.” He said coldly, “Hi, I’m Johnny.” That class
dragged on and on. Finally, the bell rang. I turned to him and asked, “I’m not sure where my next class is, could
you help me find it ” He looked at me and then said a quick NO, turned back to his friends, and walked out of the
classroom.

Last Friday, a mental health care event themed “Love myself” was held in our school,
which aimed to help us students recognize self-worth and develop positive mindsets.
This event included various activities, ranging from a campus drama show about
overcoming self-doubt to a "Compliment Wall" where we students wrote praises to
ourselves or others. What’s more , a workshop on stress management helped us find the
causes for anxiety and the ways of physical relaxation. What appealed to us most were
the well-organized games , which gave us a chance to shout encouraging phrases like "I
love myself!" together.
All the students considered this event meaningful and necessary, and sang high
praises for it .

As they were walking out, I heard they were all laughing at me. Their shrill laughing let
me blush with shame. I felt so embarrassed that I couldn’t do anything but sit there,
keeping my body unmoved and holding back my tears. What I wanted to do was just to
make friends with them. I couldn’t figure out why they laughed at me. But one thing was
certain, that is, I must remove myself from their presence. Therefore, I wasn’t ready to
leave until they walked far away.
I was ready to go home when I heard a voice calling my name. As a newcomer here
with no friends yet, I felt a little strange. Turning around, I saw Diane coming up to me with
a warm smile on her face. She said she would walk together with me. What a kind and
friendly girl she was, I thought. I was deeply moved so that I left all my embarrassment
and sadness behind. On our way home, we talked a lot and I was surprised to find we had
a lot in common. I also realized the true meaning of a friend.
