Every year, one wind blew from spring to winter and there were neither birds in the sky nor grass on the ground. This was a true picture of what Baijitan used to be seventy years ago.
Today, from the top of the sand hill in Baijitan, you can see green sandy plants growing here and there. Between the windbreak belts (挡风带), squares of wheat straw cover the sand hills like a huge golden net which firmly locks the formerly rushing yellow sand in.
How Ningxia has controlled the sands is a touching story. 70 years ago, the sky was usually filled with sands and yellow clouds. Even the cities hundreds of kilometers away were threatened. To stop the desert from moving south, the central government gave an order to stop the desertification (沙漠化). In those years, people lacked food and clothing, but this didn't weaken their courage and determination. So millions of people in Ningxia took action to fight against the desert.
There were no modern machines in the past. All they had were their two hands besides simple tools. Braving the winter cold and the summer sun, they began to plant trees and grass. With several generations' joint efforts, Ningxia has taken on a new look. The former desert has been turned into a green land with trees and grass, among which birds are singing and dancing happily in spring and summer.
Recently, a delegation (代表团) from the United Nations came to Ningxia and took a field trip. “This is not just a victory for the Chinese people,” said Mr Smith, who is from Africa. “This provides a valuable lesson for many countries that are threatened by desertification.”
24.What is the main change in Baijitan over the past seventy years?
A.Ecological conditions are getting better.
B.Birds and grass have returned to the area.
C.The sand hills have been completely flattened.
D.The wind has stopped blowing from spring to winter.
25.What can be inferred about the people of Ningxia from the passage?
A.They were well equipped with resources and technology to fight desertification.
B.Their determination was stronger than their lack of food and clothing.
C.The central government's order was not taken seriously by the local population.
D.The cities hundreds of kilometers away were unaffected by the sandstorms.
26.What contributed to Ningxia's transformation from a desert to a green land?
A.Modern machines and advanced technology.
B.Large numbers of trees and plants from other regions.
C.The hard work and willpower of several generations.
D.The natural recovery without any human participation.
27.What do Mr Smith's words imply?
A.He suggests that desertification is a significant problem all around the world.
B.He believes that China's achievement is only applicable to its own country.
C.He is doubtful about the effectiveness of China's approach to fighting desertification.
D.He sees China's success as a model for other countries facing the same issue.
C
Nature is more than beautiful for one to look at.
For Indonesian nature conservationist (环保主义者) Farwiza Farhan, nature is a silent friend. As a child, Farhan often climbed trees whenever she had problems, staying there until she calmed down. Nature has always been there for her. This is why she has been trying to be there for nature when it needs her help.
Farhan brought her love for nature to her college years. She took a master's degree in environmental management at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2009, while studying at the university, she had an opportunity to work with the Carbon Capture and Storage Institute, an international think tank that focused on carbon capture and storage to cut down emissions (排放), and earned some money. In 2012, along with several of her coworkers, she formed the Forest, Nature, and Environment of Aceh Foundation (HAkA).
In 2014, HAkA achieved one huge victory, making an oil company pay $30 million for the damage it caused to the ecosystem. Farhan said this landmark victory was historic because it was the first time that Indonesia had fined a company for burning forests. Besides, HAkA also stopped the construction of a dam that put an elephant habitat in Indonesia at risk. HAkA, now a 12 year old institution, also has programs for women such as assistant lawyer and citizen journalism training and forest guard groups.
Farhan said they saw a need to empower women as protectors of the environment because women are much more affected by the effects of environmental destruction and climate change. The conservationist said disasters such as crop failures could affect the financial status (财政状况) of families, making it more likely for them to force women to be in arranged marriages to get out of poverty or relocate to areas full of violence.
Farhan has won several awards and she commented, “The work should include everyone from all walks of life. The recognition belongs to all fighting on the ground.”
28.What did nature mean to young Farhan?
A.A mother of all things.
B.A shelter for wildlife.
C.A magical theme park.
D.A comforting partner.
29.What drove Farhan to start HAkA?
A.Her working pressure.
B.Her economic condition.
C.Her program in university.
D.Her passion from childhood.
30.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning HAkA?
A.Its strict standards.
B.Its business model.
C.Its major successes.
D.Its running system.
31.Why did Farhan call on women to be environmental fighters?
A.They are more subject to eco crisis.
B.Their hope for better jobs disappears.
C.They are loaded with family duties.
D.Their life is threatened by violence.
D
WHY SHENNONGJIA?
As we know, in 2016, Shennongjia made it on to the UNESCO World Heritage List. But there are so many important places not yet on this list. So you might ask: why Shennongjia?
UNESCO awarded Shennongjia this status because it meets two criteria required by the list. It contains a naturally balanced environment that allows many and various species to live and prosper. It is also one of the rare locations in the world where scientists can observe in real time the ecological and biological processes that occur as the plants and animals develop and evolve.
For the first criterion, Shennongjia is apparently one of the most “complete” natural areas in the world. The region rises from about 400 metres to over 3,000 metres above sea level, giving it the name the “Roof of Central China”.
For the second criterion, we can see that Shennongjia has incredible biodiversity. Look at this slide. According to official statistics, over 3,000 plant species have been recorded there. This represents more than ten percent of China's total floral richness.
It is a challenge to look after so many species. In winter, scientists brave heavy snow and freezing temperatures to supply food to the Golden Snub nosed Monkey. Thanks to their efforts, the monkey's population has doubled since the 1980s. Their number reached over 1,300 in 2015 and continues to grow.
But the most impressive aspect of Shennongjia is the local people, who take things from nature without causing damage. I visited a local village which is known for its home made honey. What is special about the honey is that it is produced by the earliest species of Chinese bee. All of this explains why Shennongjia earned—and deserves—its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as highlighting how understanding, awareness and hard work have contributed towards protecting a unique and wonderful part of our natural world.
32.Why is Shennongjia included in the UNESCO World Heritage List?
A.Because its forests stretch on and on like great green seas.
B.Because it is the legendary father of Chinese herbal medicine.
C.Because it satisfies the two requirements for the status.
D.Because it has the mysterious creature called “Yeren”.
33.Shennongjia is also called the “________”.
A.Roof of Central China
B.Roof of Northern China
C.Roof of Eastern China
D.Roof of Southern China
34.How does the author think of the scientists in Shennongjia?
A.Patient. B.Careful.
C.Confident. D.Hard working.
35.According to the text, what impressed the author most?
A.A local village.
B.The local people.
C.Some special monkeys.
D.The wild bees.

One day, Lily made up her mind to take the challenge and set out on an exciting journey. She carried a big backpack with all the necessaries of life and set off into the unknown.
Her first stop was a famous city, where she was attracted at once by the lively colors and sounds of the streets. She walked slowly around the markets, tasting new foods and chatting with the vendors (商贩). As she continued on her journey, Lily came across all sorts of interesting people and places. She met a wise old man who taught her the art of keeping calm, and a group of musicians who invited her to join their team.
But not everything was easy on her travels. Lily faced challenges and difficulties along the way, from getting lost in a foreign city to running out of money. But she kept going because it was what she enjoyed, always keeping her heart open to new experiences.
On the last leg of the tour, Lily found herself in a small village which was located (位于) in the forested mountains. The air was fresh and clean, and the mountain view was breathtaking. She decided to stay for a while, helping out the locals and learning about their way of life.
It was there that she met a kind hearted girl named Cathy, who also dreamed of traveling just like her. Together, they explored the nearby wilderness, climbing mountains and fishing in rivers.

Emerging from the Antarctic deep, the world's most famous undiscovered shipwreck Endurance is now found. It's the first time anyone has seen it in more than 100 years. Endurance, perfectly preserved, is 3,000 meters beneath the ice. “I knew that this was probably either the first or second most strongly built ice ship ever, and I was just amazed at its construction. It held together beautifully,” said a British explorer. The condition is astonishing. The exploring team spent weeks searching the deep until Endurance was at last found. The team found that Endurance was in trouble from the start—becoming stuck in thick sea ice just weeks after setting off from South Georgia. It floated for months before an order was eventually given to the crew to abandon the ship. The ship won't be raised and nothing will be removed. When the team left, it was just as it was found, resting in the darkness of this most remote corner of the world.

A Day in the Animal Shelter
[精彩范文]
A Day in the Animal Shelter
Recently, I spent a day volunteering at a local animal shelter with my classmates, and it was a day filled with unexpected joy.
Upon arrival, a shelter worker provided us with a brief introduction of the animals there and some instructions on how to care for them. Then we set out to work, feeding the animals, cleaning the cages and playing with them. One particular moment that stood out was when a shy puppy gradually opened up to me, wagging its tail and nuzzling my hand for affection.
This experience has deepened my appreciation for the act of giving. It was heartwarming to see how a little love and care could brighten others' world, and in turn, enrich ours and make us grow.

A young girl named Lily had always dreamed of going on a world tour. She had read countless books about far off lands and different cultures, and she longed to experience them for herself.
But as much as Lily loved her travels, she began to want to go home. She missed her family and friends back home, and she longed for the familiar (熟悉的) comforts of her own bed.

So Lily said goodbye to Cathy and set off on the journey back home. On the way, Lily noticed that a small bird in a nearby tree was flying around the nest, from which Lily could tell something was wrong. She neared the bird and saw what had happened. She found that on the ground near the tree lay a baby bird. She picked up the bird and put it in the nest. Then she continued to head in the direction of her home. In the days to follow, she came across many interesting things and many helpful persons.
Lily shared the interesting stories with her loved ones upon returning home. They listened closely as she told them what she had experienced and the stories of her friend Cathy. They enjoyed the gifts she had brought back with her. Lily was happy to be back in the familiar surroundings of her hometown, and she valued the memories of her travel, which had changed her in ways she could never have imagined. She was thankful for every moment of her journey and the friendship between Cathy and her.

W:I'm making a review plan for the exam.
M:Exams are a week away!
W:Exactly! I really should have started on this plan earlier.
M:Let me have a look at your plan. Oh, wait. You don't have a test for running.
W:Taking small breaks gives my brain time to review what I've studied.
M:Why not watch TV then? That's more fun than running.
W:Exercise will help me keep my brain clear.
M:I'm not going to study, but I'm sure I'll still get better grades than you do!
W:It's not only about grades. The point of tests is to help you review everything you've learned before moving on. I want to learn something, not a score.
M:Well, I can always study a whole night before a test.
W:That's a terrible way to study. If you do that, you won't really learn anything, and you'll be tired of the test! You need to get prepared one day before the test instead of studying until the last minute.

M:Some people called the pizza “terrible”; others were kinder. They said the pizza is OK, but they also said it's not pizza.

18.Where is the ship?
A.3,000 meters beneath the ice.
B.1,000 meters beneath the ice.
C.300 meters beneath the ice.
19.How did the British explorer feel about the ship?

篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了印尼自然保护主义者Farwiza Farhan (法维扎·法尔汉)为了保护环境所付出的努力。
28.What did nature mean to young Farhan?
A.A mother of all things.
B.A shelter for wildlife.
C.A magical theme park.
D.A comforting partner.
29.What drove Farhan to start HAkA?
A.Her working pressure.
B.Her economic condition.
C.Her program in university.
D.Her passion from childhood.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Farhan brought her love for nature to her college years.(Farhan把她对大自然的热爱带到了大学时代。)”和“In 2012 ... the Forest, Nature, and Environment of Aceh Foundation (HAkA).(2012年,她与几位同事一起成立了森林、自然与环境基金会(HAkA)。)”可知,童年的激情促使Farhan创办了HAkA。故选D。
解析:细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“Farhan said they saw a need ... environmental destruction and climate change. (Farhan说,他们认为有必要赋予女性保护环境的权力,因为女性受到环境破坏和气候变化的影响要大得多。)”可知,Farhan呼吁女性成为环境斗士,因为她们更容易受到生态危机的影响。故选A。

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了神农架被联合国教科文组织列入世界遗产名录的原因。
32.Why is Shennongjia included in the UNESCO World Heritage List?
A.Because its forests stretch on and on like great green seas.
B.Because it is the legendary father of Chinese herbal medicine.
C.Because it satisfies the two requirements for the status.
D.Because it has the mysterious creature called “Yeren”.
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“UNESCO awarded Shennongjia this status because it meets two criteria required by the list.”可知,联合国教科文组织授予神农架这一地位,因为它符合清单所要求的两个标准。故选C。
33.Shennongjia is also called the “________”.
