Part 1
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Q1: What season is it
What does autumn often symbolize
Q2: What does diverge mean
Q3: What emotion is here
diverge v.
SORRY→Regret, even before choosing!
The Road Not Taken
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
Q:What are the differences between the two roads Is your choice really better
The Road Not Taken
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
Q: What is your understanding about “way leads on to way”
Life is an irreversible one-way journey. Every choice opens up a new sequence that cannot be reversed. Just like the concept of "the butterfly effect" or "life game save points".
The Road Not Taken
I shall be telling this with a sign
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood,and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Q1: What kind of emotion do this "sigh" represent
remembrance pride melancholy pity It is complex, mixed and hard to put into words. It is precisely this openness that makes poetry full of charm.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,

Had worn them really about the same,
The Road Not Taken
wear n.
claim n.
diverge v.
undergrowth n.

The Road Not Taken
hence adv.
todden v.
sigh n./v. 叹息
The Tree of Choices
Now YOU are in a real Yellow Wood
--Senior Three
Every tiny choice is a root of your tree:
One more practice set Or one more show
Ask questions Or stay silent
After Gaokao, you'll face the big forks:
Which city -> Two roads diverged...
Which major -> looked down one as far as I could...
Retake or enroll -> Then took the other...
Future you will look back -> I shall be telling this with a sigh...
Symbolism is the use of an object to represent an abstract idea. For example, the rose could represent love and affection, and the rainbow could symbolise hope. It allows the poet to express a certain mood or emotion in a more subtle way, as opposed to stating it directly.
