A farmer, Isaiah Hofer in Manitoba, Canada, faced a big challenge earlier this year. With nearly 100,000 bags of surplus(多余的)potatoes, each weighing 100 pounds, Hofer was left thinking about what to do with millions of pounds of food. He was dysphoric and couldn’t think of a better way. It seemed that he had to let these potatoes go to waste.
Luckily, some public service organizations knew about his situation and came to help in time. The Farmlink Project was the first to offer help. It turned the potential(潜在的)waste into a lifeline for families in need across North America. The Farmlink Project has been helping solve this kind of problem since it was founded four years ago. It has successfully given 220 million pounds of fresh produce to those in need across the United States and beyond.
Hofer’s difficult situation also caught the attention of the Keystone Potato Producers Association. It quickly got in touch with Hofer and the Farmlink Project. They had a discussion about how to deal with these potatoes. To everyone’s surprise, Hofer agreed to give away those potatoes without expecting anything in return. After that, 115 trucks were sent to transport his potatoes to food banks in Toronto, British Columbia, San Diego, and New Mexico.
Kate Nelson, chief marketing officer and co-founder of the Farmlink Project, took part in the event and saw the whole process. He said this was one of the largest donations(捐赠)the project has ever met.
Reflecting on the experience, Hofer expressed his gratitude to these public service organizations and his happiness in being able to give back. “When you are blessed with so much, it’s just good to give back... and I’m just glad we could do that,” he shared.

ChatGPT, a smart Al chat-bot tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent of them have used Chat GPT to help with a homework task.
Developed by US company Open AI, Chat GPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create a food menu(食谱), translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US. Australia and France have banned(禁止)the use of Chat GPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using Chat GPT on the district’s networks and devices(设备). CNN reported.
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat(作弊)on study. Some also worry that Chat GPT could be used to spread wrong information.
“It does not build critical-thinking(批判性思维)and problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic(学术的)and lifelong success,” said Jenna Lyle, the deputy press secretary of the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to stop the use of Chat GPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones. The New York Times reported.
However, not all educators say “no” to Chat GPT. Some Canadian universities are drafting(起草)policies(政策)on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, headmaster for education at the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on Al software like Chat GPT are not wise. “We have to know that Al is a tool people will use,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university. What we need to do is “adapt(调整)our learning, teaching and examinations”. That way, we can “have integrity(诚信)while recognizing the use of the tool”.
28. Do you know the reason why some schools in the US banned the use of Chat GPT
A. it probably takes the place of teachers B. students may use it to cheat on homework
C. it rarely provides the correct information D. it takes up most of the district’s networks

B. using Chat GPT is not good for developing students’ minds
C. Chat GPT is so far the smartest AI chat-bot tool
D. Chat GPT might offer the wrong information
30. Which opinion is NOT mentioned in the story
A. Using Chat GPT makes students lazy in thinking.
B. The complete ban on using Chat GPT is not wise.
C. Chat GPT will completely change present education.
D. Chat GPT may be used for both teachers and students.
31. Where is the passage probably from
A. Sports and Fitness B. Health and Diet C. Cultural Exchange D. Science and Education

Adults who had close contact with natural spaces during their childhood could have a better mental health than those who had less contact, according to a new study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health(IS Global),an institution supported by “la Calxa,” involving four European cities-—Spain, the Netherlands, Lithuania and the UK.
The all-adult study gave 3,600 participants a questionnaire on how frequently they used natural spaces during childhood— for example, playing in a garden, riding a bike at the park or hiking in a forest. They were also asked about the importance they put on using such places.
Volunteers were then given a psychological test, which included a variety of questionnaires and problem-solving activities, to analyze their nervousness and feelings of depression within a four-week period.
The results consistently showed that the people who were more exposed(暴露的)to natural spaces had higher mental health scores compared to those with lower childhood exposure—as did those who attached higher importance to using green spaces.
The study’s coordinator(协调员), Wilma Zijlema, wrote that the results “show the importance of childhood exposure to natural spaces for the development of a nature-appreciating attitude and a healthy psychological state in adulthood”. She also stressed the importance of “recognizing the meaning of growing up in environments with limited opportunities for exposure to nature”.
According to the study, 73 percent of Europe’s population only has limited access(接触机会)to natural spaces. Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, director of IS Global’s Urban Planning, said that “Many children in Europe lead an indoors lifestyle, so it would be desirable to make natural outdoor environments available, attractive and safe for them to play in. We make a call on policymakers to improve the availability of natural spaces for children and green school yards.”
While this study was based in Europe, a lack of green space can affect anyone, anywhere. So remember to make time to immerse yourself in nature, as your mental health is just as important as the physical one.
32. What can we learn about the study according to Paragraph one
A. It was carried out only in four European cities.
B. It is supported by ail the adults who are physically healthy.
C. It indicates the more contact with nature, the happier one’s childhood will be.
D. It shows adulthood mental health could be related to childhood exposure to nature.
33. What do we know about the study
A. The participants were from all over the world.
B. The participants included both children and adults.
C. It focused on the participants’ physical health state.
D. It consisted of a questionnaire and a psychological test.
34. What do Paragraphs 5-6 mainly talk about
A. The process of the study. B. The method of the study.
C. The value of the study. D. The difficulties of the study.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title of the passage
A. Importance of Physical Health. B. Benefits of Natural Green Spaces.
C. Values of Psychological examinations. D. Problems of Europe’s Young Population.

41.C 根据上文中的“I always described myself as a perfectionist”可知,作者是一个完美主义者;再结合下文中的“I always did my best”可知,作者总是把事情做到最好。
42.B 根据下文“then I started to notice that I was a quitter, not a trier”可知,作者开始发现自己实际上是一个半途而废者而不是一个勤勤恳恳的人,这与上文中作者自认为是完美主义者之间是相违背的。 meanwhile 与此同时;however 然而;thus 因此; besides 此外。
bring out 出版,生产;end up结束;get over 克服;give up 放弃。
44.C 根据空后的“no matter how small, I dropped that task or interest”可知,此处指无论错误多小,作者都会放弃那个任务或兴趣。
且下文“What if I failed ” 也提示作者害怕失败。故选 A。
47.B 空前的 The idea 指前一句“What if I failed ”这个想法,根据空后的“it was easier to leave it as an unknown”可知,作者认为“如果我失败了呢 ”这一想法难以忍受,所以干脆不去尝试,把它当作一个未知的东西留在那里比较容易。
49.A 根据空后的“opened them up and started painting”可知,作者买了画画的工具后应是满怀期待地回到家开始作画。故选A。
bring up养育;sign up 报名; set up 建立;pick up 捡起。
53.A 根据转折词 but 及下文“Even better, I’m constantly(持续不断地) trying new subjects”可知,虽然经常失败,但是作者从未放弃。故选 A。

Dear Jenny,
I’m so glad to receive your letter, where you showed/expressed your interest in my life at senior secondary school.
At the beginning, everything seemed fresh and exciting, but I found it difficult to learn some subjects, and I had to deal with/cope with more pressure. Fortunately, our school has offered a range of/a series of extra-curricular activities. And what interests me most are various elective courses. I will face many challenges and make more progress in the future. I am sure hard work will pay off.
Would you tell me something about your new semester I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
