Phototaking drone (无人机)
Spark is a camera drone. It can fly above your head and take photos. A Chinese company called DII made it. It is very small when folded (折叠), as small as a can of soda. Like other drones, you can control it with a remote control. But you can also control it with hand gestures.
Social robot
This little robot has a big head and a round body. It is Jibo, a “family robot”. The US company Jibo Inc. made it. Jibo almost seems alive. When you say “Hey, Jibo”, it will dance and turn to face you. When it talks, it moves its head and body. There are no eyes or mouth on Jibo’s face. But it can use animated icons (动画图标) to show feelings. Jibo can do simple things, such as taking photos and reading the news. But it might learn to do more in the future.

Reading Lu Xun’s articles has become common memories of Chinese students. From a young age, we study his articles such as From Baicao Garden to Sanuei Study and My Old Home. We get to know Runtu and Kong Yiji under his pen.
Lu Xun was born on Sept. 25, 1881, and his real name is Zhou Shuren. So many years has passed, but Lu Xun’s life experiences still encourage young people. He went to Japan to study medicine as his father died of illness. But seeing the dark side of Chinese society of the early 20th century, he decided to pick up a pen and write stories to show the dark side of society and tradition, trying to enlighten(启迪) people. Lu Xun also liked woodcut paintings(木版画). He started the New Woodcut Movement in the 1930s, encouraging more young artists to focus on woodcut paintings. He thought they were a useful art form to spread knowledge, culture and new ideas.
Though Lu Xun’s works were written in his time, they are still a part of pop culture. His words are often used in stories, videos, emojis and creative products. Lu Xun is also one of the most talked-about writers on the video website. By now, there are more than 13, 600 videos about him with 170 million views, according to the site.
Chinese writer Zhi An thinks it’s a good thing that his voice is still heard. In fact, Lu Xun was the one who was never afraid to draw attention. “Lu Xun was brave enough to fight against the rules. If you wanted him to be silent, he would speak out,” Zhi An wrote.
6.When was Lu Xun born
7.How did Lu Xun enlighten people in the early 20th century
8.Why did Lu Xun see woodcut paintings as a useful art form
9.How many views did the videos about Lu Xun get on the video website

To help protect people against the novel coronavirus (新冠病毒), scientists have created vaccines (疫苗). These days, people who are between 3 and 59 can get vaccinated (接种疫苗). Here is something about vaccines.
There are many different ways to make vaccines. At least 115 different vaccines for the novel coronavirus are being developed around the world right now. Many of them may not work or may have influences that can be dangerous. That is why testing is very important.
Before a vaccine is ever tested on humans, it’s first tested on animals to make sure it seems safe. Testing the vaccine on humans is done in several different periods. In Period (阶段) 1, a small group of people are given small amounts (数量) of the vaccine to see if it has any bad influences. Period 2 still tests the vaccines safety, but it’s mainly a test to see if the vaccine seems to work. If Period 2 goes well, the vaccine can begin Period 3. During Period 3, the vaccine is tried on a much larger group of people to see how well it works.
The novel coronavirus is very serious and it influences the whole world. There is huge pressure to develop a working vaccine quickly. It normally takes seven or more years to develop a safe vaccine that works well. Luckily, this time, developing the vaccine against the novel coronavirus doesn’t need so long, scientists have created it.
Thanks to the scientists, we can get vaccinated so soon. All of us believe that we can overcome the novel coronavirus completely.

Students at Sacajawea Middle School. US. once designed a “School of the Future”.
These students were taking part in the “School Next Design” national competition. Some of their designs won the favor of judges with the help of Michigan State University
(MSU) students and entered the final round.
Three eighth-grade teams from Sacajawea Middle School, here in Bozeman, needed to come up with their idea of school of the future,” said MSU architecture student Jennisse Schule.
The students came up with lots of ideas. Some wanted to build a planetarium; some designed a movie theater. Eighth-graders Heather, Jon, and Mitchell wanted to have athletic buildings at their school. And they wanted lots!
So we have our gym over here. It is a big place. “It has a weight room, an aerobics (有氧健身) room, a gym, a track, and then a football field.” Mitchell said.
But of course, designing a building is not easy. The students had to learn architecture terms, the materials they needed to use, and how to put the models together on a computer. Also. they needed to make a presentation, videos, and an essay.
Like Heather said, it isn’t just about designing a building. It’s about community and how someone should feel and making everything a better place, a whole town or neighborhood.”

With the rapid development of science and technology, the ways of communication among people have changed a lot in the past years.
As we all know, in ancient times, people communicated with others who were far away only by writing letters. It took a very long time to get the message.
In the 19th century, telegraph was invented, but it was not widely used. The letter was still the commonest way at that time. In 1836, John Coker invented the first electromagnetic telegraph (电磁电报机) in the world, and then telegraph came into being and was popular. It was much faster than letters, bringing great convenience to people.
As time goes by, telephones become increasingly widely used. Now, phones have been developed as mobile phones, fixed telephones, Internet telephones and other categories. They are important communication tools in modern information society.

Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went worse in March 2017 after heavy rains damaged the only power cables(电缆) in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful method to solve it. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun’s energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons(电子). The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy and keep it in the lamp’s batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge(电荷) can power a 50-walt LED light for two hours-enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2017. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.

When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toy wasn’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets (皮影戏偶) from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that use puppets made from leather (皮) or paper, accompanied (伴奏) by music and singing. It was invented during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD24). It tells us about folk tales and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county (县),Shaanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art. Puppet- makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets including washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving skill-moving the leather under the knife” Wang said. It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick (砖) to make her left hand more powerful while practicing. It takes about 3, 000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complex (复杂的) steps make it hard to pass down the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found ways to do so. In recent years, she has made shadow puppets about traditional cartoons and given live streaming (网络直播) performances. “I hope more and more young people enjoy shadow puppetry and pass it down,” she said.

Scientists are preparing to produce the world’s first machine to clean up the largest area of ocean plastic. The system was first dreamed up by a teenage boy. Once it is produced, it will be carried by ship to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (太平洋垃圾带) between Hawaii and California. It is believed that there are 1.8 trillion (万亿) pieces of plastic. It was discovered in 1997. And this is humans’ first try to deal with it. Scientists believe the machine should be able to collect half of the rubbish in the patch, about 40,000 tons in five years. In the past few months, they have been busy making it come true with all kinds of work.
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is more than twice the size of France, and has at least 79,000 tons of plastic, according to a research. Most of it is from the fishing gear (装备) given up by ships.
This kind of terrible waste kills more than 100,000 whales, dolphins and other sea animals each year. Many seabirds and other sea animals are being found dead with stomachs full of small pieces of plastic. They ate the plastic in the sea, thinking it was food. Now I will show you the latest time-saving invention: a dog-washing machine. Dog owners can buy one for their dogs. They can save time by putting their dogs in the machine and then 33 minutes later, a clean and fresh-smelling dog comes out.
The machine becomes more and more popular. The sales of the dog-washer are increasing. The dog-washing machines save a lot of money for dog owners. However, it’s bad news for animal hospitals because they are losing many customers.
The washing machine has many advantages. First, the whole cleaning process includes a shampoo (洗发), rinse (冲洗) and blow-dry. Second, tests showed that dogs enjoyed the washing process (过程) and were very happy when the blow-dryer started working. Third, the most important is that the makers of the machine say it’s very safe and does not harm dogs.
One dog owner, Lucy, loves her new machine. She said her dog was happy, too. Lucy explained to the reporters, “Before I bought my washer, I only took my dog to the animal hospital a few times a year. Now I wash her every week and she looks great. I also save a lot of money.” Most people who raise dogs like the machine very much. And it takes over the market quickly.

You may think that inventions are far away from your everyday life. But in fact almost everyone can invent. It’s just that they do not recognize that their ideas could be the start of an invention.
Once inventors see their ideas have some practical value they don’t let them slip away.
For example, the inventor of the dishwasher American Josephine Cochrane loved to give dinner parties. But she found it took long to wash her dishes by hand and too many of them broke. She decided that a machine could do the job faster and with fewer mistakes. So in 1886 she set out to make one for herself.
Cochrane’s most wonderful inventions are created to solve the problem. So the first and most important step is to find the problem.
You can start by looking at what is wrong with the things you are using now. You can ask grandparents or neighbors if they remember ever saying: “I wish someone would invent something for ...” Or you can look at people in different areas — such as on the street or at school. Then you might notice situations or things in need of improvement. Remember to record your ideas and work. This will help you develop your invention and protect (保护) it when it is completed.
The next step is to think about possible solutions. An invention is a new way of solving a problem. So think of many varied (各种各样的) and unusual ways. You can often come up with a solution to a problem by looking at it from a different angle (角度) or thinking about it in a new way.
And the hardest part of inventing even for a lot of inventors is finding a problem and coming up with a solution. Once you have an idea you can always get help to build your invention.
This problem-solving technique can also work in your everyday lives. So why not try it in your studies, in your relationship with others or even in the way you look at the world

Some people think that only adults can invent things. History shows us that many children have been inventors. Margaret E. Knight was one of such children. Her success showed that a girl could be an inventor.
Margaret was born on February 14th, 1838 in York, Maine, the USA.When she was young, she didn’t like to play with dolls as other girls did. She was interested in woods and tools. Margaret liked to make things with her hands. She would make sleds (雪橇) for her brothers in the winter, and kites to fly in summer.
Margaret’s father died when she was just ten years old. She had to leave school to work at a cotton mill (工厂) with her brothers. One day, there was an accident at the mill. One of the looms (织布机) stopped working right and hurt a worker. The worker was badly hurt and then died. Over the years, many men had tried to make the looms safer, but no one could make an idea work. Margaret made up her mind that she would solve the problem.
She spent hours making drawings and models until she came up with a device (装置) that worked. She was only twelve when her motion safety device could save lives. Soon it was made part of all the looms. Margaret never got paid for her idea. However, she said it was more important to save lives.

A small cloud moves slowly through the air in a operating room (手术室). In the room a patient with cancer, lies on a table. The cloud is all around the patient, covering her body and filling her lungs (肺). The cloud is not smoke. It is made of millions of nano-robots (纳米机器人). These tiny robots move from cell (细胞) to cell in the patient’s body, killing the cancer.
Fighting cancer with nano-robots is only an idea today, but scientists say that it could be possible in the future. Using nano-robots for good purposes such as fighting the illness or repairing the environment may be the way to many of today’s problems.
However, nano-robots could be a dangerous risk as well. Because nano-robots are so tiny, they will have to work in large teams of many thousands to many millions. For this reason, nano-robots will have to be programmed to build themselves. Scientists will not have the ability to build millions of nano-robots one by one.
This ability to re-produce is making some scientists worried. What will happen if something goes wrong in the programming Quite a lot of crazy nano-robots would be far worse than any illness. Some people think that if they get out of control, nano-robots could make the earth gone.
What should be done Should we continue researching nano-robots or should we search for other methods This is one of the many difficult decisions that we have to make in the future.

Can you imagine a world without a writing system for your language It may be hard to picture it now, but a man named Sequoyah lived in such a world. Sequoyah was a member of a native American tribe(部落)the Cherokee. Cherokee people speak their own language, but for hundreds of years they did not have a system of writing. Without a writing system, the Cherokee had no newspapers or books before 1809.
Sequoyah was probably born around the year 1770 and lived with his mother in a small village in the mountains of Tennessee. When he grew up, he became a blacksmith(铁匠). When he was doing business with those “English-speaking people” he noticed that they used paper with marks to record their thoughts and ideas. Sequoyah called these pieces of paper with marks “talking leaves”. He began to wonder why people who speak Cherokee did not have a way to write down their words.
In 1809, Sequoyah decided to give the Cherokee their own “talking leaves”. At first he tried to make a different symbol for every word in the Cherokee language. But in that case, there would be so many symbols and too hard for people to remember, so he decided to make a picture for each syllable(音节). After much hard work, Sequoyah invented 85 symbols. In order to see whether it would work, he helped his six-year-old daughter Ayoka learn each symbol and found she could learn to read and write very quickly. Sequoyah’s invention was a success!
Before long, Sequoyah’s writing system had spread far and wide. Cherokee people living in all different parts of the country learned to read and write. In 1825, Sequoyah’s system was made the official written language for Cherokee people. To this day, Cherokee speakers still use Sequoyah’s writing system. In some parts of the United States, you can see street signs and billboards written in both English and Cherokee. Sequoyah will always be remembered for his important contribution to Cherokee people.
