Things weren’t easy for Patrick Furlong during his teenage years. His parents got separated when he was about 13 and his dad moved to another state.
One day in 2000, when Furlong was about 15, he was getting ready for a special school party that required him to wear a tie. He looked at himself in the mirror and realized he had no idea how to tie it. His hands shook as he tried to fix the tie. He tried again and again, but failed every time. Tears came to his eyes. He felt very upset and so alone, with his dad far away. He put the tie in his pocket and walked out, feeling sad.
At the door of the party, Mr. Archibeque — his school helper — stopped him. The school was small, so the teacher knew about Patrick’s troubles. “Do you have your tie?” Mr. Archibeque asked quietly. He took Patrick to a quiet place. Patrick started crying and took out the tie that was not smooth. Mr. Archibeque smiled gently while he tied it for Patrick, just saying, “We’re going to be OK.”
Twenty-three years later, Patrick stood in a bathroom. His 8-year-old son called him, asking for help with a tie. The boy needed it for his first formal party. As Patrick fixed the tie, he thought back to the past. He felt like that lonely kid again but this time, he was the one giving help. That night, he pictured Mr. Archibeque standing behind him, putting a hand on his shoulder and smiling. It seemed like the picture was saying, “We’re going to be all right.”
Furlong is now a teacher at Loyola Marymount University. He helps students who want to join community work and work for fair treatment for everyone. He talks with students and just helps them understand what they are going through — a role like being a school helper.
4. Why did Patrick feel upset before the school party?
A. He couldn’t fix his tie.
B. His parents got separated.
C. His dad didn’t come to the party.
D. He didn’t want to go to the party.
5. What can we know about Mr. Archibeque from the text?
A. He was strict with students.
B. He cared about students in need.
C. He often asked Patrick questions.
D. He knew little about Patrick’s family.
6. What made Patrick think of Mr. Archibeque after 23 years?
A. Going to a school party.
B. Doing community work.
C. Helping his son tie the tie.
D. Becoming a university teacher.
7. What lesson can we learn from Patrick’s story?
A. Kindness can be passed on.
B. It’s hard to learn to lend a hand.
C. Family problems are difficult to solve.
D. School parties are important for students.
C
In Chinese high schools, clubs are popular among students — they often focus on hobbies like calligraphy (书法), science experiments, or debate, and usually balance activity time with school studies. Many Chinese students join clubs to find out about interests outside textbooks, make friends with similar likes, and learn useful skills.
Similarly, American high schools have many kinds of clubs, and one of the most loved is the Drama Club. It’s more than just an extracurricular activity — it’s an active group where students can be creative, get confidence, and make good friends. Unlike some clubs that focus on specific (具体的) skills, the Drama Club isn’t only about putting on plays; it helps students grow in many ways, so lots of teens love joining it.
Each term, the club presents a big show. Open tryouts welcome everyone — no experience needed. A freshman might do a short speech for a small role, while a senior could land a lead in Romeo and Juliet. Those who prefer not to act build sets, make costumes, manage lights, or keep practices on track. Even shy students find their special job, like a second-year student discovering a love for painting backgrounds.
Practices run 3-4 afternoons weekly. Students practice lines until they sound natural, fix small problems, and support nervous peers (同龄人). Performance week is exciting: the school hall shines as families arrive with flowers. The audience takes a quick breath at sad moments, laughs at funny lines, and cheers loudly at the end — making all the hard work feel worth doing, with pride lasting for years.
Beyond fun, the club teaches valuable skills: speaking in front of people, managing time, and understanding how others feel when acting as characters. For many American high schoolers, it’s more than a club — it’s a second family, where they learn to try new things, help others, and discover new sides of themselves.
8. Why do many Chinese students join high school clubs?
A. To focus on textbook studies.
B. To explore the world out of class.
C. To prepare for entering the college.
D. To spend more time on extra activities.
9. What can we learn about the Drama Club in American high schools?
A. It mainly attracts shy students.
B. It needs rich experience to join.
C. It offers a job for every student.
D. It holds a big show every month.
10. How do students feel about their work in the Drama Club?
A. Valuable. B. Annoying. C. Challenging. D. Comfortable.
11. How does the American Drama Club help students?
A. By improving their living standards.
B. By developing their all-round skills.
C. By focusing on their physical health.
D. By providing better studying conditions.
D
After afternoon classes, it’s common to see teenagers take out their phones. Some look through educational apps to review math formulas (数学公式) while others jump into online games or check social media. This daily sight shows the Internet is now part of teens’ lives—they can’t live without it. But it has two sides: helping or hurting them, especially if used unbalanced.
First, the Internet is a strong learning tool. Teens get many things, like free math classes on fun TED-Ed science videos, breaking regular classroom limits. A 2023 survey found 68% of high schoolers use online platforms to help study, and 45% of them got better grades in English, physics and more. It also builds social skills: joining international reading groups lets teens practice talking with different cultures—key for future jobs.
But we can’t overlook its bad parts. A Journal of Adolescent Health study said teens online over 4hours a day are 2.3 times more likely to do badly in school. They put aside homework for games or social media, so test scores drop. Peking University found 31% of teens have sleep problems and 25%gain weight from long sitting and late screen time. What’s worse, some focus on virtual worlds, avoid family, and feel worried offline.
Schools are very important for helping teens use the Internet in a smart way. They need to give classes that teach students useful online skills. In these classes, students learn to tell good educational websites from bad ones, set daily limits on screen time, and notice signs of Internet addiction. Besides, teachers can plan offline activities, like hiking or debate competitions. These activities take teens’ attention away from screens and help them enjoy real-life fun again.
In short, the Internet has two sides. With family, friend and school help, teens can use it well——to grow healthily.
12. How does the author support the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. By telling a story.
B. By asking questions.
C. By comparing different things.
D. By giving examples and numbers.
13. What does the underlined word “virtual” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Real. B. Online. C. Happy. D. Busy.
14. What can schools do to help teens use the Internet wisely?
A. Offer them all kinds of apps.
B. Stop their using the Internet.
C. Teach them to choose good websites.
D. Allow them more time on social media.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Teens’ Daily Life with Phones.
B. Bad Effects of Too Much Screen Time.
C. How Do Schools Help Teens Study Online?.
D. Is the Internet Helpful or Harmful to Teens?.

In recent months, Chen Lei got more and more addicted to online games. He skipped math homework to play extra rounds, slept in history class after staying up till midnight gaming, and even turned down his once-favorite basketball games! His desk was full of test papers with red “X”s. LiMing felt really worried about his friend. He tried to remind Chen Lei, but Chen Lei always brushed him off. His eyes would soon go back to the computer screen.
Worried he couldn’t pull Chen Lei out alone, Li Ming decided to ask for help. One afternoon after school, he went to see Ms. Wang, their head teacher. She’d also noticed Chen Lei’s bad change — she’d called his parents for a meeting just the week before. “Real care isn’t just words,” Ms. Wang said, “Don’t tell him off about games. Bring something that matters to both of you — something that can make him remember the fun he’s missing.” Li Ming felt encouraged and decided to follow her advice. That evening, he went to Chen Lei’s home, taking a basketball under his arm.
Chen Lei was sitting in front of the computer, eyes fixed on the screen, when Li Ming knocked at the door. “Hey, Chen Lei, let’s go to play basketball for a while,” he said softly. Chen Lei turned around, looking surprised. “I’m in the middle of a game,” he said, turning back to the computer.
Li Ming sat down beside him, taking a deep breath. “I know games are fun, but... I miss the days we played basketball together,” he said. “Your grades have dropped a lot lately, and your mom told me you stay up late every night. I’m really worried about you.”
Chen Lei’s fingers stopped on the keyboard. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he sighed, closing the computer. “You’re right,” he admitted. “I’ve been spending too much time here. It’s just... I don’t know what else to do when I’m bored.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Li Ming smiled and held out the basketball. “Let’s go play for a bit — just like old times,” he said. Chen Lei nodded, putting on his jacket. On the court, the wind blew gently, and Li Ming passed the ball to Chen Lei. For a moment, Chen Lei hesitated, but when he caught the ball and shot it into the hoop, a big smile broke out on his face. They played until sunset, laughing as they chased the ball. Chen Lei breathed heavily but said, “I forgot how fun this is.” Li Ming patted his shoulder: “We can do this every afternoon instead of you staying up gaming.”
The next day, they focused on getting back into basketball. They invited their old teammates to join them after school. Chen Lei practiced hard, his skills coming back quickly. Afterward, they studied together — Li Ming helped him with math, and Chen Lei explained physics to Li Ming. Gradually, Chen Lei stopped staying up late gaming. His test papers had fewer red “X”s, and Ms. Wang praised his progress. Chen Lei told Li Ming, “Thanks for pulling me back. Basketball and study are way better than games.”
