Mark Cuban vividly remembers the moment when he realized he was nearly broke. He was 27 years old, trying his hand at starting a business for the first time with a software company called MicroSolutions. His secretary took about $82,000 and disappeared, effectively wiping out MicroSolutions’s account balance. His company only had $2,000 left in the bank. That meant Cuban’s own money was nearly gone, too.
Though he felt sad, he didn’t give up. He had no doubt that he could become a multimillionaire. That’s because his ability to sell made him rich in the first place. He decided to get a job as a waiter at night, and a sales job during the day.
It didn’t take long for Cuban to recover the cash, and then he made more. However, his day-to-day work wasn’t always interesting. He spent hours studying software, and sitting in his house testing and comparing new technologies.
The effort—coupled with the fact that he was selling software around the time home computers became popular— paid off when Cuban sold MicroSolutions to CompuServe for $6 million in 1990. He was 32 years old. Cuban then helped co-found AudioNet, which became and was acquired by Yahoo for $5.7 billion in 1999, making Cuban a billionaire at age 40. He currently has an estimated net worth of $5.7 billion, according to Forbes.
Being good at sales can play a key role in building financial success historian Rainer Zitelmann wrote in his 2018 book. About 15% of CEOs from the top 100 Fortune 500 companies started their careers in sales, according to a 2017 Heidrick and Struggles’ survey. It’s the third-most common background among U.S. CEOs, tied with operations and behind finance and engineering.
“Once you learn how to sell, you can always start a business, because you’re an entrepreneur (企业家) at heart,” Cuban said.
3. What did Cuban do after his failure
A. He gathered himself and kept trying.
B. He gave up on his business totally.
C. He worked as a full-time salesman.
D. He started a new company at once.
4. What do the figures in paragraph 4 show
A. Cuban went through many ups and downs.
B. Cuban found it easy to make a lot of money.
C. Cuban has achieved great business success.
D. Cuban has developed advanced technologies.
5. What can be inferred from Rainer Zitelmann’s words
A. Hard work can lead to amazing achievements.
B. People should start their careers without sales.
C. Entrepreneurial success only depends on sales.
D. Sales ability helps people stand out in business.
