The California Archaeological (考古) Site Stewardship Program (CASSP) is a non-zero-sum situation where volunteers, agency archaeologists, and heritage sites gain.
Why join CASSP
Site stewards (管理员) help protect cultural resources by reporting damage early, before more irreplaceable resources are lost. Their presence can keep away potential criminals. Site stewards give back to the communities in very personal ways.
How to become a site steward
The CASSP volunteer training workshop takes two days. First, we provide one day of online classes taught by archaeologists and other agency staff. You must register, but there is no cost and anyone can attend. Then we’ll spend one day going on a field trip to visit actual archaeological sites and practice the field work and the reporting that you will do as a site steward. The field trip requires another registration, a $25 fee and signing an agreement to not reveal sensitive site information, such as the location.
After completing both parts of the training workshop, you will receive a site assignment from the land management agency where you volunteer. You arrange your site visits with the archaeologist at that agency and submit your photos and written reports to him/ her.
What benefits to gain
You engage in archaeological field work, develop new skills, learn about the past, and feel a sense of satisfaction from doing meaningful work. At the same time, agency archaeologists get more information about the sites that they are responsible for.
The sites that volunteers visit are better protected because damage is detected earlier, when it is easier and less expensive to treat and because potential criminals stay away if they think that their actions may be observed.
1. What is a key responsibility of CASSP site stewards
A. Repairing damaged cultural sites. B. Recording visitors’ illegal behaviors.
C. Raising funds for agency projects. D. Reporting initial signs of site harm.
2. What is required for the CASSP field trip
A. Passing an archaeology exam. B. Submitting a research proposal.
C. Keeping certain information secret. D. Completing a two-day online class.
3. How can volunteers benefit from the CASSP
A. They’ll learn about the history of archaeological sites.
B. They’ll be rewarded financially for reporting damage.
C. They’ll receive professional guidance on writing reports.
D. They’ll be offered admission to archaeology graduate programs.
B
Twenty years ago, I had a plan. I was completing my Ph. D. in geography in Louisiana, and about to begin law school. I tried my best to study for the entrance exam for law school, and it paid off. Then, Hurricane Katrina made landfall. My law school closed. I returned to the lab, where I had been a graduate student, now as a research associate. I felt aimless and lost my sense of identity.
Later, during routine field mapping, a woman walked over, looked at my map, and pointed out that it was incomplete — I was missing the underlying human factors, which I could never have known as an outsider. Although I could map vegetation overgrowth, for example, I had missed how that visible process connected with the community’s varied uses of different areas as meeting spots, recreation areas, and more. That moment redrew my map, literally and for the rest of my career.
Law school finally reopened, offering me a chance to get back on my original track. But the chance encounter stayed with me. I couldn’t deny my new interest: studying how people can be environmental sensors and developing systems using this knowledge. The idea of abandoning my long-held plans scared me. I cried in sadness. Then, I chose the unknown.
I became a research assistant professor. For several years I switched between teaching-focused and research-focused appointments, which made it difficult to build drive. But I did not look back. Now, I’m an associate professor, doing work I love. I start my classes by saying science is a human endeavor (努力), with the unique human parts making us strongerif we let them. My students in turn often share their stories of plans changing because of illnesses, care-giving, injuries, and more. We smile, hug, and carry on.
4. How did Hurricane Katrina affect the author
A. It destroyed his research lab. B. It delayed his law school plan.
C. It forced him to leave Louisiana. D. It strengthened his career identity.
5. What did the woman’s comment lead the author to realize
A. His map lacked human perspectives. B. He should update his mapping equipment.
C. His community interactions were limited. D. He shouldn’t have considered himself an outsider.
6. What does the author’s career shift suggest about life plans
A. They should correspond to initial goals. B. They are bound to cause emotional struggles.
C. They depend mainly on academic achievements. D. They can advance through some unexpected events.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Innovative but sensitive. B. Determined and proud.
C. Knowledgeable but indecisive. D. Adaptable and curious.
C
People who have a strong drive for novel experiences and touch-related sensations are especially drawn to “e-fashion”, according to a new study. E-fashion refers to digital clothing that people — or more precisely their avatars (虚拟替身) — can wear in virtual environments and represents a growing online trend. In theory, digital clothing is also more sustainable than physical clothing, says study team member Kokho Jason Sit.
In order to improve the environmental sustainability of the fashion industry, digital clothing must actually replace physical clothing purchases. The new study, which investigated what makes people willing to pay for digital clothing, doesn’t directly address this issue, but it does suggest that digital clothing could have some surprising consumer dynamics.
Sit and his colleagues conducted two online surveys. The first one included 331 consumers in the UK who completed a questionnaire about their tendency to seek out novel sensations and experiences. Then they were shown a digital sports jacket and asked to rate its uniqueness and how much they were willing to pay for it. The second survey involved 220 consumers in the United States and focused on a digital sports shoe. In addition to the questionnaire about sensory-seeking tendencies, participants completed a questionnaire about their need for touch to evaluate products and enjoy experiences.
In both surveys, the greater the perceived uniqueness of digital clothing, the higher the consumer’s willingness to pay for it, the researchers report in the International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management. This pattern was most obvious for people with high sensory-seeking tendencies and a greater need for touch. Sit says he and his team members were surprised by the positive effects of the need for touch on consumers’ willingness to pay for e-fashion.
Will digital clothing scratch people’s itch for clothing novelty, enabling people to try fashionable designs, rare limited-edition styles, or even sci-fi looks that can’t exist in the real world Or the opposite — will it just provide a new area for additional consumption These are the questions that researchers will answer in the future.
8. What is the purpose of the study
A. To promote sustainable clothing choices. B. To compare digital and traditional fashion.
C. To explore factors driving e-fashion purchases. D. To prove the environmental impact of e-fashion.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The challenges Sit faced during data collection.
B. The detailed processes of the two online surveys.
C. The cultural differences between UK and US consumers.
D. The key findings Sit and his team discovered in the study.
10. What about the findings amazed the researchers
A. Touch was irrelevant to digital clothing experiences.
B. Brand loyalty had a stronger effect than touch needs.
C. People’s willingness to pay for digital clothing is declining.
D. Physical sensations could boost people’s interest in e-fashion.
11. What does the underlined part “scratch people’s itch” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Satisfy a strong desire. B. Evaluate a new trend.
C. Cause physical discomfort. D. Replace traditional habits.
D
Butterflies are sensitive to environmental changes, meaning they are important indicators of ecosystem health, but they are in decline. New research suggests butterfly numbers can be boosted by making small changes to road verges (边缘).
While most studies on road verges and butterflies have focused on temperate climates with natural plants in rural areas, new research from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) examined planted vegetation along major roads in big cities of Singapore.
Researchers surveyed 101 road verges, each at least 30m long, located along major roads with speed limits between 50 km/h and 70 km/h, and planted with non-native bushes. They found verges with a mixture of different flowering plant species directly increased the total number of butterflies and butterfly species. "A greater diversity of flowering plants can offer a variety of nectar (花蜜) sources for butterflies. This can attract more species of butterflies, especially those that prefer a broad range of nectar from different flowers, " explains Associate Professor Eleanor Slade from NTU’s Asian School of the Environment.
Selective thinning and less frequent cutting also benefited butterfly numbers and species diversity, with the verges seen as paths linking the insects to other green spaces. Slade says this could be because a greater variety of plant heights within road verges creates different micro-climatic conditions-variations in temperature, humidity (湿度) and light intensity - that appeal to different butterflies. More uniform plant heights created by frequently cutting verge plants can reduce the population of the butterflies and species richness and offer less protection.
The study also showed busy roads negatively affect butterflies and butterfly species, particularly when traffic density (密度) is higher; this typically occurs when road speed limits are higher, and vehicles travel faster. Roads with more traffic also have greater vehicle pollution, which can affect both plants and butterflies.
But the researchers say the benefits of road verges could cancel out these effects if traffic speeds are proper. They found that for roads with speed limits of up to 70 km/h, the bad effects of traffic on butterflies could be reduced by increasing the variety of flowering plants on road verges and allowing them to grow to varying heights.
12. What makes the study of NTU different from previous ones
A. It takes climate change into account. B. It analyzes butterfly behavior in the forest.
C. It focuses on ecosystems along rural roadsides. D. It investigates grown plants in the urban area.
13. Why is Eleanor Slade mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To explain research methods. B. To propose strategies for improvement.
C. To back the findings of the new study. D. To prove the city is more suitable for research.
14. How can traffic’s negative effects on butterflies be reduced
A. By frequently cutting verge plants. B. By planting diverse flowering species.
C. By building barriers between roads and plants. D. By permitting plants to grow to a specific height.
15. Which is the best title for the text
A. The Secret Life of Urban Butterflies
B. The Ecological Impact of Traffic Pollution
C. Butterflies Benefit from Roadside Greenery in Cities
D. Roadside Flowers Can Improve Rural Butterfly Diversity
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Sprinting (短跑) involves short, all-out efforts —bursts of movement lasting anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute, followed by periods of rest or active recovery. This style of training has been shown to improve VO Max — the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise. ____16____ Boosting your VO Max through sprinting can also make other works feel easier.
____17____ In a 2016 study, women who performed just four minutes of sprint intervals per week for 12 weeks achieved greater VO Max gains than men following the same plan. “We’ve seen that more women respond favorably to this type of training,” Hirsch, an expert in sports, says.
Sprinting can also support overall heart health and reduce cardiovascular (心血管的) risk factors, such as blood pressure. ____18____ While sprinting, you apply high rates of force to the ground, stimulating fast-twitch muscle fibers. “As we age, we tend to lose those fibers in both size and volume, which is a problem,” says Hirsch. ____19____
It’s also one of the few cardio workouts that support bone density. You won’t get the same benefits from cycling. A 2023 study even found that short-distance runners had better bone mineral density than long-distance runners.
The most surprising benefit ____20____ “We’ve seen VO Max and muscle health benefits with just two sessions a week,” says Hirsch. It’s one of the most cost-effective options.
A. You don’t need to do much of it.
B. But the benefits of sprinting go beyond that.
C. It is considered one of the best markers of cardiovascular fitness.
D. Sprinting helps preserve them, which can be beneficial later in life.
E. It is proved that sprinting can actually contribute to burning off more calories.
F. You should practice it two to three times a week to achieve the maximum effect.
G. Some research suggests sprinting may be especially effective for women’s health.

As far as I was concerned, life experiences that taught me a lesson were not my cup of tea. I had never concerned myself with going out to strange places or meeting new people and learning about their cultures. That was how I spent my life till that day when something completely unexpected occurred. And I never thought that I needed to make a change.
I was in high school and as expected, I was miles away from social activities and organized sports. I had some interest in swimming and I could have done well, but I was shy and did not consider it a rewarding experience within my comfort zone though the coach asked me to try swimming many times.
Before that experience, I always thought that I was as strong as an ox (牛). Be it summer or winter, I could tolerate anything. One day I returned from school and felt a pain in my stomach. I drank plenty of water and even took some medicine to relieve the pain, but none of these worked. Therefore, my mother decided to drive me to hospital. When we reached the hospital, I was silently crying with pain. After I got out of our car and sat down in the wheelchair, I was feeling like a long-time patient. I had a feeling that something was going to happen.
A doctor came and she asked me to point with my finger at where it hurt. I did and she touched the place and then asked the nurse for scans. Later, it turned out to be appendicitis (阑尾炎). I could not believe it. I was strong and could ward off any disease with a smile. How could that happen to me I felt helpless and weak and that was most disturbing for me.
Till the operation, I was only getting fluids (流食). I asked the nurse when I would be able to eat burgers and fries. She smiled and promised me that it wouldn’t take long.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was wheeled into the operating room the next day.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
I was wheeled into the operating room the next day. My mom was standing outside. I wanted to cry. The doctor noticed that and asked me to take a deep breath. Gradually I fell asleep. When I woke up after the operation, I felt very weak and my mother was sitting beside my bed. When she saw me moving, she asked me if I was still up for those burgers and fries. I said I didn’t want to have them any longer. Two days later, the pain disappeared, but a new realization dawned on me: life is unpredictable, and no amount of avoidance can shield me from unexpected challenges.
When I finally returned home, I made a decision to change. I started joining small study groups in school, where I met new friends with different backgrounds. I also went to the coach and asked him if he could get me on the swimming team and help me learn. He agreed. With his assistance and my own hard training, I participated in some big competitions. Whenever new friends asked me what led me to swim professionally, I often replied, “Appendicitis.” It took an illness for me to learn the true nature of life and how to never waste time and talents. And that experience also taught me life’s most valuable lessons come from the most unexpected places.
