M: Sarah, how’s your final project coming along
W: I’ve revised it so many times that I’m not sure if it’ll ever be done.
(Text 2)
M: Have you received the new National Geographic It’s already Wednesday.
W: Sorry! All deliveries have been delayed lately. I think it might not arrive until the day after tomorrow.
(Text 3)
M:You look sad, Laura. What’s wrong
W: I hate being a secretary making and answering phone calls. And I’m tired of preparing reports for the sales
manager. It’s boring.
(Text 4)
W:Which of the attractions did you visit, and which one did you like the most
M: First, I went to the art gallery, which had some amazing exhibits. But it couldn’t compare to the church, which
is such a historic part of the city’s culture. That was definitely my favourite. I also visited the botanical garden,
but it didn’t really catch my interest.
(Text 5)
M: I lost my library card. How can I get a new one
W: Fill out this application form and provide a proof of identity. Please wait over there while we process your
request.
M: Okay, I’ve filled out the form and brought my ID card.
W: Perfect! I’ll have your new library card ready in a few minutes.
(Text 6)
M:Actually, we’re doing a customer survey at the moment. So I wonder if I could fill in this form about you.
W: Go ahead.
M: What sort of films do you like watching then Action movies
W: Not really. My husband always insists we watch science fiction movies but I prefer documentaries.
M: Ok. Thank you!
(Text 7)
W: Dr. Brown. I’d like to know your opinion on my decision regarding the topic of my research paper.
M: Sure. In the beginning, you were thinking of focusing on the impact of renewable energy on modern cities, but
then you were considering the influence of traditional architecture in rural areas of the southern region, right
W: Exactly. I was really torn between the two topics.
M: Well, I believe you were right to stick to your original idea. There is a wealth of information available on
renewable energy from online databases.
W: Yes, I discovered that. I also searched through many books, but they didn’t provide much useful information.
But once I settled on my original topic, I found a lot of valuable data in specialized journals.
(Text 8)
M: I really feel like eating some chocolate. W: If you really want, just have some.
M: But it’s bad for my health.
W: It depends. A little bit won’t do any harm, and some dark chocolate is actually good for you. But I like white
chocolate. M: For me, nothing is better than milk chocolate. I once went into a chocolate shop in France and it
was like heaven. The products there were fantastic.
W: They say the best chocolate comes from Germany, but I believe Belgium chocolate is supposed to be the best.
M: Oh, you’re making me so hungry for chocolate. Shall I go to a supermarket and get some
W: Maybe you could check out the chocolate workshop around the corner. They offer hands-on chocolate-making
experiences and you can even bring home your own creations.
M: Good idea.
(Text 9)
M: Good afternoon. Community Center.
W: Hi. I’m new in town, and I am curious about the services the Community Center has to offer.
M: What are you interested in
W: Well, let’s start with kids. I have a teenage son.
M: Right now, during the school year, we have private lessons for teens, in all subjects.
W: Great. He needs help with math.
M: We can certainly help with that. Just have him come by any Wednesday or Saturday afternoon.
W: Fantastic. What about sports
M: We have tennis lessons on Sunday mornings for teens and Sunday afternoons for adults.
W: For myself, I’d be more interested in yoga.
M: Our yoga classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
W: Great. I also like reading. Do you have any book clubs
M: We have just started one. But it is for adults only. We may start up one for teens next summer.
W: Maybe I’ll come in one day next week and sign up for some classes.
M: That would be fine, but don’t come on Monday because we’re closed that day. We’re open Tuesday through
Sunday.
W: Oh. Thanks for ... Maybe I’ll stop by on Tuesday then.

Welcome to Stanton University. I’m here to tell you about the various halls of living. We aim to offer
accommodation in halls to all first year students. First of all, there’s Brown Hall, which as you’ll see, is not the
most modern of buildings but it is very popular. It’s got a good sense of community. It has recently had a gym
built. Another option is Blake Residence, which is built like a large house and so everybody cooks and eats
together. This is an all-girl dormitory. The largest hall we have is Queens Building and this has been upgraded
recently. The original parking area has been built on so that it has a large common room and each bedroom now
has its own shower room. A further option is the Parkway Flats, which won an award for design in its day and this
building now has a preservation order on it. The Flats also have many extra facilities such as a special computer
room, a small library and a self-service restaurant. The cost of breakfast, lunch and dinner is covered in the fees
for this hall so it does look a bit more expensive. The last one we can offer you is Temple Rise, which again is
slightly more expensive than the other halls as the rooms are larger. However, the hall has domestic staff who
clean the rooms once a week, so this might be an attractive option for the messier ones among you.2

Sound signals are vital for animals deep in the dark ocean to communicate and search for food. That
way of life has been threatened from increasing human noise. A leading cause is shipping-noise
emissions.
B
Born with a skin condition, Michaela Mabiny DePrince was labeled a "devil child" at her Sierra
Lenoe orphanage (孤 儿 院 ), the last to be fed and the first to be beaten. When an issue of Dance
Magazine blew into the orphanage yard, with a woman smiling on the cover, she imagined a better life as
a ballerina.
With roughly 90% of traded goods traveling by sea, quieting the ocean through reductions in
shipping is untenable. Efforts to make ships more efficient and less polluting may also reduce noise. But
experts say those measures won't do enough to restore quiet. So, a range of technologies are being
developed to allow humans and other animals to co-exist in the ocean.
Adopted by an American family at age 4, she studied and practiced to make her dream a reality.
When she was just 15, she was one of six promising dancers in the documentary First Position. She went
on to study with the American Ballet Theater and became a dancer of the Dance Theater of Harlem. At
the height of her career, she secured starring roles with the Dutch National Ballet and appearing in the
film version of Beyoncé's Lemonade.
Much of the underwater noise a ship produces comes from its propeller(螺旋桨). The low-frequency
noise it produces can travel thousands of metres underwater without losing strength, interrupting the
movements of whales which use these frequencies to communicate.
One solution by researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC), makes the metal propeller
flexible, allowing their tips to bend and twist, preventing bubbles from forming and reducing the noise
the propeller produces, says Rajeev of UBC.
She was born in the war-torn West African country of Sierra Leone. When she was 3, her miner
father was killed and her mother died of hunger. At the orphanage, she took to turning around quickly and
standing on the tips of her toes, and the DePrinces, the couple who adopted her and brought her back to
New Jersey, promised to take her to ballet lessons once she excelled in English. She was quickly
discovered to be talented. With her athleticism and what one reviewer called her "spitfire quickness,"
DePrince became an international star in Amsterdam. There she took the lead in such ballets as Swan
Lake and Coppélia, dancing with "undeniable grace, strength, and precision."
More ideas are also on the table. Giovanni, a marine-engineering researcher, is investigating whether
an acoustic (音响的) black hole can help. Such an object, whose aim is to trap sound like black holes trap
light, can be built by fixing steel beams to the inside of the ship. Laboratory tests show this can reduce
vibrations (震动) like the best available alternatives, without the added weight or fire risk these often
involve.
She had to take a break in 2017 after an accident, which gave her time " to seek treatment for years
of nightmares (噩梦)" about her wartime childhood. She joined the Boston Ballet in 2021 but left in the
same year for undisclosed reasons. " Dance with your heart," she once told young ballerinas. " Don’ t let
What is missing is a willingness for shipbuilders and owners to use the technological solutions.

from international shipping by 70% by2040, this may prove a good deal.

This is Your Dream Dance
With growing evidence that dancing helps boost brain health and manage symptoms of
neurocognitive (神经认知的) and movement disorders, accessible dance programmes and movement
therapists are helping improve the lives of millions.
36
.
From immersive videos that spotlight lesser-known destinations to packing and transport advice,
offering a wide range of authentic and diverse content, the social platform TikTok has become a vital
source of knowledge and inspiration when it comes to exploring the world.
Dance as brain movement
There’s actually a lot more happening inside the brain when trying to follow even the simplest
choreography (编排). “In dance class, we have to learn patterns, and remember sequences,” says David
TikTok was launched in 2016 and has since grown an audience exceeding one billion monthly active
users. Its snappy format---short, shareable videos---and addictive algorithm (算 法 ) has proved
particularly popular among younger people, with 70% of its users aged under 34. More than 60% of Gen
Z Americans have used TikTok as a search engine. The app has seen a 410% increase in travel content
views since 2021. More than 70% of TikTok’s European audience say they’re likely to book a holiday
based on recommendations from the platform.
Lee, a programme director. The effect extends beyond the dance class to the real world.

.
In addition to the physical and neurological benefits, dance can also help people living with disease
make out what their bodies can and can’t do. Rather than trying to control, or “fix” our body, dance is
about developing greater body awareness and moving at our capacity, regardless of physical or cognitive
difference.
TikTok attracts an array of content creators, whose insights can be invaluable for travelers. Entering
a search term such as “top things to do in Paris” will bring up endless videos, and the algorithm will adapt
to these interests next time you scroll.
Dance as community
39
. Dancing with others not only makes people feel less different in their abilities when dealing
with neurological and movement disorders, it also helps to combat the loneliness and social isolation of
living with a chronic illness.
But they also have the potential to cause harm, at times guiding thousands of visitors to places that
don’t have adequate facilities to cope. Many destinations have fallen victim to their own success. Some
businesses have been fighting back, including Dae, a cafe in New York, which introduced a no-video
policy last year, stating: “The TikToks... have gotten a bit out of control for us.” There’s also the issue of
the promotion of unethical tourism. When Dr. Natara Loose, an American vet, visited Mauritius this year,
she says she was “shocked by the number of boats selling tours to swim with dolphins, a practice that’s
illegal in Mauritius but that’s splashed all over TikTok.”
Still, researchers say they’re only scratching the surface of understanding how dance can be used
therapeutically.
40 . Researchers are also trying to find out the most effective types of dance
movements and the optimal length and frequency of classes.
A. Dance as body acceptance
B. Dance as physical exercise
C. The uniqueness of dance as a therapy lies in the following aspects
D. Dancing requires more “brain power” than simpler repetitive exercises
E. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of dance is the sense of belonging it creates
For better or worse, it’s clear the platform’s influence on travel is enormous, particularly among
younger generations and it isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
