Before Pete Adler joined the Army, he majored in architecture. Now, after spending
25years in equipment maintenance and supply, and another 17 years as a civilian employee, Adler
is back to his architectural roots. And it’s for a good cause: building free ramps (坡道) for his
senior and disabled neighbors.
Adler began helping his neighbors after the nonprofit project: HOMES gave a presentation
第 3 页,共 10 页
at his local Rotary Club. Adler recalls the representative saying — “Too many seniors and
disabled individuals need ramps, but they can’t afford them.” That’s when Adler reached out to
his friends so that they could start building ramps for neighbors in need.
“I feel this is my calling, and I’d like to start a crew,” he told his friend Karen Scott, who
was eager to jump in and help.
Adler’s group of volunteers has only grown with time. Now when he pulls up to a house for
an installation, he has about a dozen people by his side to transport lumber (木材), work the saws,
and assemble the deck.
“It’s turned into an amazing service,” said Adler. “I really enjoy the process and the
teamwork, and figuring out the best solution for people in need.”
When a recipient (接收者) can afford it, they are only charged with the cost of the materials.
If they can’t cover the cost, project: HOMES steps in to pay the full price.
Adler and his team of volunteers have transformed lives by building over 500 accessibility
ramps for households in need. Adler has gone from building one ramp per weekend to completing
three, sometimes four ramps each week across the Tri-Cities area.
71-year-old Jaunita Barnes is one of the 500 neighbors that Adler has helped through
project: HOMES. After a stroke and heart attack, Barnes found it difficult to navigate the stairs
with her walker. She was confined to her home for months — getting groceries delivered and
calling doctors to her door — until Adler and his team stepped in to help.
“Now I can go where I need to go,” said Barnes. “Adler and the others are truly nice.”
24.Why did Adler return to architecture-related work
A.To take on a social responsibility. B.To continue his abandoned business.
C.To earn fame from architecture. D.To make up for his neighbors.
25.What motivated Adler to initiate the ramp-building project
A.The Rotary Club’s nonprofit project. B.A personal interest in ramp design.
C.A request from his disabled neighbors. D.The struggles the disadvantaged faced.
26.What does the growth of Adler’s volunteer group suggest about the project
A.It has gained recognition and support. B.It proves Adler’s profit has increased.
C.It provides opportunity for volunteers. D.It requires professional construction skills.
27.How does Barnes probably feel about the ramps
A.Useful and cheap. B.Helpful and worthy.
C.Unique and valuable. D.Costly and complicated.

The numerous bacteria that naturally inhabit the human body seem to help us in many ways.
One group is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type of gut (肠道) bacteria known as Blautia,
which has made headlines recently because it seems to exert some really remarkable effects. Now,
a Chinese team is glimpsing another potential benefit of Blautia: helping people adapt to high
altitudes. Their findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others
perform better in these challenging environments.
Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited
45 men to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters.
Despite the thin air, the men ate similar food as they had at home, minimizing the effects of diet
第 4 页,共 10 页
changes on their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went from being rare to very abundant in their
guts.
The team then subjected mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab, simulating
(模拟) an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day. The
Blautia-treated mice showed milder symptoms of altitude sickness. This opens the door into
whether altitude sickness might be amenable to treatment through the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may also extend to the brain. “Its superpower comes from the
connection between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley College. The fatty
acids it makes are known to activate receptors on nerves that connect the digestive system, heart
and brain. This could help explain a surprising correlation that Klepac-Cerak reported last year:
Kids are more likely to talk and laugh when they have more Blautia in their guts. “There’s lots of
communication happening between our bacteria and our brain; we are just beginning to uncover
what services bacteria do for us,” Klepac-Cerak notes.
Blautia’s apparent superpowers suggest to Kong it could serve as a supplement (补充) that
benefits people regardless of whether they are planning a trip to Tibet. But first, Kong says, he
wants to find out whether Blautia is a “solo” player or exerts these protective effects only as part
of a larger group of bacteria.
28.What’s the significance of the study led by a Chinese team
A.It provides a practical payoff. B.It reaches a conclusive finding.
C.It caused a social media sensation. D.It introduces a pioneering technology.
29.What do we know about the subjects in both experiments
A.They received Blautia in their diet. B.They moved to high-altitude regions.
C.They suffered severe altitude sickness. D.They experienced low-oxygen conditions.
30.What does the underlined word “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Resistant. B.Incurable. C.Responsive. D.Insensitive.
31.How would both Kong and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s role in human health
A.A double-edged sword. B.A solo player.
C.A partially-understood influence. D.A cost-effective solution.

If you yawn (打哈欠) more and pretend to be interested often, researchers may have an
explanation: a global rise in boredom. Boredom has risen significantly over the past 15 years, a
new paper suggests. It also proposes a possible cause: the growing use of social media.
“Technology has driven us into an age of constant digital engagement. With endless
rewarding stimulation a fingertip away, however, people are becoming increasingly bored,” the
authors wrote in Communications Psychology.
One cited experiment tracked over 100,000 American adolescents for nearly a decade,
finding a modest but significant rise in boredom from 2011, measured on a five-point scale.
Another study of over 28,000 Chinese students showed a 14% increase in boredom between 2009
and 2020, based on the Boredom Proneness Scale.
How these results are interpreted is open to debate. James Danckert, a professor of
cognitive neuroscience, thinks it reasonable that boredom is on the rise and social media may play
a part. “The function of boredom, however, is to push you into action,” Danckert argues. He
第 5 页,共 10 页
believes the key lies in taking part in unpredictable, meaningful events where you must make
active choices. Impromptu conversations with somebody can fill these requirements.
Danckert doubts social media ticks the same boxes. “When you start scrolling (滑动) on
your phone, a ton of what you’re going to see there is highly predictable,” he said. The more
predictable our world becomes, the less meaningful it is and the more boring it becomes.
Professor Andreas Elpidorou, an expert in the field of boredom studies, agrees. Digital
media may “force us into a continuous engagement with a content that is interesting enough to
entertain but not meaningful enough to fulfil,” he said. However, he suspected it was not the only
factor, adding, “I worry this is too convenient an explanation. I’m not saying it isn’t true, but I
worry it may only be partially true.”
32.Why does the author mention the quote in paragraph 2
A.To support the finding of a new paper.
B.To review the benefits of digital engagement.
C.To provide solutions to overcoming boredom.
D.To highlight the suggestions given by researchers.
33.What do the two studies mentioned in paragraph 3 focus on
A.The increase in boredom levels. B.The historical trend of boredom.
C.The effect of boredom on human behavior. D.The link between boredom and
technology.
34.What does the underlined word “impromptu” mean in paragraph 4
A.Structured. B.Informal. C.Detailed. D.Unprepared.
35.What is Elpidorou’s attitude towards the results of boredom research
A.Appreciative. B.Objective. C.Tolerant. D.Dismissive.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I came from a poor family. My parents didn’t earn much money. Every night, I saw them
working late. They looked tired, but they always smiled and made our home full of love.
I was a high school freshman who loved beautiful things. There’s a school ball coming up,
and I really wanted a nice dress. I often looked at the dresses which were shining in store windows.
I touched the glass and wished I could have had a dress like that.
My parents started saving money for me after they saw how much I wanted a dress. They
worked harder and chose cheaper things. One day, my mom gave me an old envelope with money
inside. I recognized the envelope which contained a letter of admission from my high school a few
months ago. My mother’s eyes were full of hope. “This is for your dress,” she said with joy. I held
the envelope tightly and felt how much my parents cared about me. I promised to find a beautiful
dress for the ball to make them proud of me.
I got on the bus to the shopping area. My heart was beating fast with excitement. The bus
was crowded, and I stood near the back. Suddenly, I heard some noise. “You didn’t pay for your
ticket,” the conductor said to a man. The man looked anxious. “I forgot my wallet. My daughter is
in the hospital, and I was in a hurry,” he explained. I saw how worried he was and how his hands
were shaking.
I really wanted that dress, but I couldn’t let the father get into trouble. I hesitated for a
moment, took a deep breath and paid for the man’s ticket. Then, without thinking too much, I
handed the envelope with the rest of the money to the man. “Your daughter needs you more than I need a dress,” I said softly. The man looked at me with tears in his eyes and said thanks over and
over.

67.I had to get off the bus and walked home slowly. I felt a little sad because I didn’t have
money for the dress anymore. When I got home, my parents asked if I got the dream dress. I shook
my head and told them what had happened. “I helped someone who needed the money more,” I
said with a little worry. But my parents gave me a big hug and said they were really proud of me. I
took comfort from their words and gave up thinking about the dress.
A few days later, I was doing my homework when I heard a knock on the door. To my
surprise, it was the man from the bus. He looked a little nervous and said, “I found you with the
address on the envelope. I just want to thank you again.” He gave me a small package. Curious, I
opened it and saw a pretty dress. It was simple but very nice, “You helped me when I was in great
need. I hope this dress makes you feel as beautiful as you are.” It’s my turn to express my
gratitude to him then. I knew that dress was special because it told a story of kindness.
