As we all know the British love to stand in line, but there is no real line-up in a bar and the bar workers don’t know whose turn it is. But there are still some rules. For example, don’t speak loudly or snap your fingers. And whatever you do, please don’t ring the bell hanging behind the counter(柜台), this is used by the boss to tell people it’s closing time. Remember if you look too pleased and happy, the bar workers will think they have served you.
In a British bar, always say please and try to remember the things that the British bar worker hate. For example, they don’t like people to keep others waiting when they can’t decide what to drink. They hate people to stand against the bar where there are a lot of customers waiting for service.
Talking of tips, you should never offer the bar workers a cash gratuity(现金小费). The correct behavior is to invite them to drink something. If so, they will think that their work is worthy. A cash gratuity is unfriendly and impolite.

When I first arrived in China, I knew little Chinese. And some of the Chinese words I learned about had 1 to do with food. I learned the names of a few dishes, but still didn’t know most of the things I saw on Chinese restaurant menus. Luckily, there were 2 to help me.
Nearly every restaurant menu in China has pictures of food 3 it. But many restaurants I’ve been to in the US don’t. What is the 4 for the difference
One thing I’ve definitely (明确地) 5 about China is that food is a bigger part of their culture than it is in the US. A common way to 6 someone in China is to ask them if they’ve eaten yet. Food is just a bigger deal here—and having pictures of food in menus is part of that. Some menus are almost like works of art, with beautiful photos.
Another thing is the 7 of the dishes. Chinese dishes sometimes have fanciful (别出心裁的)names like “palace guard chicken” or “three fresh things from the soil”. These are interesting names, but they don’t really tell you 8 the dishes are like. Therefore, it’s 9 to have pictures so you can actually see what you are going to eat.
There are 10 even more reasons. All I know is that I was very thankful to have those picture menus when I first came to China years ago.
1. A. something B. anything C. everything D. nothing
2. A. videos B. covers C. pictures D. materials
3. A. on B. for C. from D. in
4. A. result B. reason C. choice D. list
5. A. noticed B. thought C. reflected D. imagined
6. A. introduce B. remember C. respect D. greet
7. A. prices B. colors C. pages D. names
8. A. what B. how C. why D. which
9. A. harmful B. helpful C. colorful D. awful
10. A. nearly B. simply C. probably D. hardly
Ⅴ. 阅读理解
We know good manners are important. Today I am going to tell you something about manners in different countries. I think you already know that people in different countries usually have different ways of doing things.
Something that is rude in one country may be quite polite in another. For example, in Britain you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having liquid food. That is considered as bad manners in Britain. But in Japan you needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink something. It shows that you are enjoying it. In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all during a meal.
In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hand on the table throughout a meal. In Arabic countries we must be careful with our hands. You see, in Arabic countries you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite.
So, what should you do if you visit a foreign country Well, you needn’t worry. You can ask the native people there to help you and you can just watch carefully and try to do what they do.
