Every year, many people drown(溺水) because there aren’t good tools to help them in time. Can we create a strong and helpful tool to save people by the river This idea comes from Liu Tiancheng, a student from Jiangsu. The 13-year-old invented a telescopic water rescue pole(落水救援伸缩棒). It led him to win the 13th Yangzhou Youth Science and Technology Innovation Mayor Award.
During the summer vacation of 2023, Liu did research in cities such as Yangzhou, Wuxi and Suzhou. He found that along the riverbanks in these cities, water safety tools are mainly throwable lifebuoys(抛掷式救生圈). While useful for rescues near the bank, they can’t help with longer distances. Also, some cities have rescue poles along the riverbanks. But they are often very heavy and can reach only 2 to 5 meters.
To make a water safety tool that’s both long and light, Liu came up with a rescue pole that’s like a fishing rod. “When it’s folded, it’s less than 1 meter long, so it’s easy to carry. When you extend it, it can reach about 5 meters,” Liu said. Pulling a string will cause a small can of dry ice to fill the pipe(管子) with air, making it straighten and extend to another length of 5 meters. It can be thrown into the water for people in need to grab(抓住) onto. At the same time, an alarm buzzer(警报器) will go off. There are also glowing rope loops at the end that can be seen at night. According to Liu, the tool costs about 120 yuan and only the dry ice needs changing for long-term use. “It can be used in different situations and help in a big way,” he said.
( ) 1. What problem does a throwable lifebuoy have
A. It’s too heavy to carry and throw. B. It’s not helpful for longer distances.
C. It cannot be used at night. D. It takes a long time to reach a drowning person.
( ) 2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “extend” in Paragraph 3
A. 延长 B.收缩 C. 连接 D.遥控
( ) 3. What does “it” refer to in the third paragraph
A. The string. B. The small can. C. The pipe. D. The alarm buzzer.
( ) 4. What are the advantages(优势) of Liu’s rescue pole?
a. It can reach up to 15 meters. b. It’s light and can be folded.
c. It can be easily found at night. d. It’s not expensive. e. Its dry ice can be used many times.
A. abc B. acd C. bcd D. cde
( ) 5. What can we learn from Liu’s words in the last paragraph
A. He is not satisfied with his invention. B. He plans to invent more useful tools.
C. He is thinking to sell his invention. D. He hopes his invention can help a lot.

In each Opinion section of the New York Times for Kids; China, we visit a different Chinese school and invite kids to express their opinions on a certain topic. In March, we went to Shenzhen Bay School to record students' opinions on how humans and A.I(人工智能) get along.
Andy-15 years old
A huge difference between A.I. and humans is that robots don't create new things, and they don't get bored with things. Take the floor-cleaning robots as an example: They can sweep the floor for many years without getting bored, but we humans would get bored quite quickly. We instinctively(本能地) want to create new things, and that's where we have an advantage over A.I.
Eileen—13 years old
I want to add a pair of "super-long-distance" glasses in my eyes so that I can see interesting or dangerous things sooner. I could look out of the window and see people I miss far away. I could also predict earthquakes. In this way, I can help warn people of the coming danger.
Eva—14 years old
I don't want my memories to be changed or improved, because every memory is beautiful and worth recalling. But if it must be changed or improved, I would bring back all the memories I had as a baby that I've forgotten. My family is always happy whenever they talk about when I was a baby. I think they would be good memories, and I wish I could have them back.

Maps mark seas, countries, cities and our homes, and guide us through the world. To know them better, let’s take a look at how maps have changed over the centuries.
Many ancient countries used maps. One of the first is thought to have been drawn on the wall in Lascaux, France, around 16,500 years ago. Hidden among the drawings of birds and bulls (公牛) is a map of the stars. The Babylonian Map of the World is the oldest known earthly map, which shows Babylon and its neighboring towns on the stone.
Claudius Ptolemy made maps go global. Born in Egypt around 100 AD, he was the first person to try to make a world map. With the help of math, Ptolemy marked around 10,000 locations from Britain to Asia and Africa.
Perhaps the most commonly used world map is the Mercator Projection. It was introduced in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator. An important part of maps is the imaginary lines of longitude, latitude and the equator. Mercator took the globe(地球仪) and made it flat (平的), but to do this he had to make the areas further north and south larger, while the areas nearer the middle stay about the right size. The reason for this is that the Earth is like a ball, but a map is flat. It is easy to find places, but some people said it was unfair because places including Canada, the UK and Europe appeared much bigger than they really were.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, modern technology allowed map makers to produce maps showing locations exactly. Nowadays a great many people view maps on their phones. Researchers are working to map the floor of the oceans and to locate every tree on Earth. Scientists are also trying to map the past by using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It will collect light from stars and may find the secrets about the beginning of the universe (宇宙).
