根据第二段“The reason she put so much effort into caring for those potted plants, however, troubled me.”
根据第三段“They remind me during the dark winter months full of bare trees and yellow grass that light, love and growth still exist.” 故选A。
根据最后一段“But my greatest reminder of light and love was Grandma herself. Her love lives on in my heart although she is in Heaven.”

故选A。
由文章第二段“In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone…Netta then draws on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.”
由文章第三段中“Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially be transformed into a positive experience of solitude.”
由文章最后一段中“Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection. It can open the door to ‘peak experiences’ such as wonder, harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age, however, many readers do not fancy their chances of ever taking a long enough break to have such experiences.”
1.C 根据上文的“In the event of failure, it is very tempting to engage in self-blame or self-pity for what happened.”和下文的“Here’s what you can do to make yourself feel good when things don’t work out.”
2.B 根据上文的“When things don’t go according to plan, it’s natural to feel disappointed, frustrated, or sad.”和下文的“Recognize your feelings and accept that it’s okay to feel that way. By allowing yourself to experience your emotions, you can process them better and move on.”
3.E 根据下文的“Grab some time to engage in activities that make you happy and relaxed. Take a long bath, walk in nature, meditate…”
4.D 根据上文的“Surround yourself with people who inspire you, while being true.”和下文的“You could also join a support group or an online community of like-minded individuals who share your interests.”
5.G 根据下文的“While you see yourself as a strong person who can handle negativity, it’s best to withdraw from the chaos during recovery. Avoid social media and dealing with colleagues who often trigger negativity.”

When I was a little boy, my mum, dad, brothers and I lived in my grandma’s old house, surrounded by four huge vegetable gardens. Around the house she planted so many flowers. On the back porch grandma had dozens of potted plants hanging on hooks. She watered them, talked to them and nurtured them. And in winter she would carry them all inside and set them on shelves near the windows of our enclosed front porch. There with a little water and a lot of love, she kept them alive and growing even during the darkest months.
As a boy I was puzzled by all the effort she put into them. I comprehended the four huge gardens. They helped to feed the family all winter long. I even recognized the flowers around the house. They were pretty and smelled so sweet in the summer months. The reason she put so much effort into caring for those potted plants, however, troubled me. They didn’t give us any food and they rarely had any flowers on them. They remained a mystery to my child’s mind.
Now as I’ve grown older, I am beginning to understand why my grandma had those potted plants. It is the same reason that I have so many pictures of sunrises and forests hanging in my home. They remind me during the dark winter months full of bare trees and yellow grass that light, love and growth still exist. They remind me that spring will come again.
Today I see grandma’s potted plants in a new light. They were worth every bit of the love and care she put into them. But my greatest reminder of light and love was Grandma herself. Her love lives on in my heart although she is in Heaven. May we all learn to love as she loved, shine as she shined and live as she lived!

It is William Shakespeare, the great coiner, who is given credit for the word “lonely”. Coriolanus, one of his characters, compares going into exile (流放) to a “lonely dragon” retiring to his cave. He was talking about a physical state: someone who was lonely was simply alone. Then, thanks to the Romantic poets, the word took on emotional meanings. Loneliness became a condition of the soul. For William Wordsworth, who famously “wandered lonely as a cloud”, the natural world offered an escape from negative feelings of loneliness—a host of flowers could provide “cheerful company”. Today, loneliness is often seen as a serious public-health problem, creating the feeling of disconnection.
In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone. He begins with an account of stories of solitude created by figures such as Michel Montaigne, a writer, and Edward Hopper, a ta then draws on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.
It is common to treat loneliness and solitude as synonyms (同义词), but they are not. The author suggests that what is negatively described as one state can be positively expressed as the other. Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially be transformed into a positive experience of solitude. To this end he emphasizes how being alone can help restore people and offers practical advice. In a noisy world, he argues, people should make time to be alone, away from attention-grabbing motives.
The book’s interviewees mostly regard a lack of company as a contributor to autonomy. But this depends on whether solitude is desirable or not. Enforced solitude, such as that experienced by prisoners, typically leads to nothing but suffering. Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection. It can open the door to “peak experiences” such as wonder, harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age, however, many readers do not fancy their chances of ever taking a long enough break to have such experiences.
( )5.How does Paragraph 1 introduce the concept of loneliness
A.By tracing its development.
B.By analysing causes.
C.By making a point to be argued.
D.By sharing a romantic story.
( )6.What does Netta Weinstein’s book Solitude focus on
A.The various terms of solitude.
B.The societal impact of solitude.
C.The long-standing history of solitude.
D.The psychological benefits of solitude.
( )7.Netta describes the state of loneliness as .
A.stressful B.essential
C.changeable D.never beneficial
( )8.What does Netta most probably agree with according to the last paragraph
A.Enforced solitude is a matter of choice.
B.Enforced solitude contributes to autonomy.
C.Elective solitude is rare in the digital world.
D.Elective solitude interrupts peak experiences.

Sometimes, we pour in our best efforts, only to see the worst outcomes. It can be frustrating and demotivating, and slipping into a negative mindset is easy.
In the event of failure, it is very tempting to engage in self-blame or self-pity for what happened. 1. Here’s what you can do to make yourself feel good when things don’t work out.
Acknowledge your emotions
When things don’t go according to plan, it’s natural to feel disappointed, frustrated, or sad. 2. Recognize your feelings and accept that it’s okay to feel that way. By allowing yourself to experience your emotions, you can process them better and move on.
While it is good to recover quickly, the grieving phase is a necessity you shouldn’t skip. People who deny that they failed and that nothing went wrong only find themselves in more complicated situations and a more fractured emotional state. Feel sad, breathe, take a few walks, and think that acknowledging the issue means 50% of your problem is already solved.
Practise self-care
3. Grab some time to engage in activities that make you happy and relaxed. Take a long bath, walk in nature, meditate, read a book, or watch your favourite movie. When we feel good about ourselves, we are better equipped to deal with life’s challenges.
Surround yourself with positivity
Surround yourself with people who inspire you, while being true. 4. You could also join a support group or an online community of like-minded individuals who share your interests.
5. While you see yourself as a strong person who can handle negativity, it’s best to withdraw from the chaos during recovery. Avoid social media and dealing with colleagues who often trigger negativity.
A.Take a step back and evaluate what went wrong.
B.Don’t suppress your emotions; instead, acknowledge them.
C.However, it’s crucial to pick yourself up and move forward.
D.Spend time with family and friends who love and support you.
E.Self-care is the key to healthy mental and physical well-being.
F.Celebrate the small wins with friends who are happy to see you triumph.
G.Having a positive support system can help you stay motivated and focused.

When I was a little boy, my mum, dad, brothers and I lived

on hooks. She watered them, talked to them and nurtured

them. And in winter she would carry them all inside and set
them on shelves near the windows of our enclosed front porch.
There with a little water and a lot of love, she kept them alive
and growing even during the darkest months.
As a boy I was puzzled by all the effort she put into them.
I comprehended the four huge gardens. They helped to feed
the family all winter long. I even recognized the flowers around
the house. They were pretty and smelled so sweet in the
summer months. The reason she put so much effort into caring

for those potted plants, however, troubled me. They didn't give
us any food and they rarely had any flowers on them. They
remained a mystery to my child's mind.
Now as I've grown older, I am beginning to understand
why my grandma had those potted plants. It is the same
reason that I have so many pictures of sunrises and forests
hanging in my home. They remind me during the dark winter
months full of bare trees and yellow grass that light, love and
growth still exist. They remind me that spring will come again.

It is William Shakespeare, the great coiner, who is given
credit for the word “lonely”. Coriolanus, one of his characters,
compares going into exile (流放) to a “lonely dragon” retiring to
his cave. He was talking about a physical state: someone who
was lonely was simply alone. Then, thanks to the Romantic
poets, the word took on emotional meanings. Loneliness became
a condition of the soul. For William Wordsworth, who famously

“wandered lonely as a cloud”, the natural world offered an
escape from negative feelings of loneliness—a host of flowers
could provide “cheerful company”. Today, loneliness is often
seen as a serious public-health problem, creating the feeling of
disconnection.
In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology
professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone. He begins
with an account of stories of solitude created by figures such as
Michel Montaigne, a writer, and Edward Hopper, a painter.

Netta then draws on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to
clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.
It is common to treat loneliness and solitude as synonyms
(同义词), but they are not. The author suggests that what is
negatively described as one state can be positively expressed as
the other. Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially
be transformed into a positive experience of solitude. To this
end he emphasizes how being alone can help restore people
and offers practical advice. In a noisy world, he argues, people

should make time to be alone, away from attention-grabbing
motives.
The book's interviewees mostly regard a lack of company as
a contributor to autonomy. But this depends on whether
solitude is desirable or not. Enforced solitude, such as that
experienced by prisoners, typically leads to nothing but suffering.
Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection. It
can open the door to “peak experiences” such as wonder,
harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age,
