由文章第二段中“I immediately pulled out the hose and drove back to the gas station, where I was educated on the economics of breaking a gas pump (泵).” 故选A。
由文章第三段“My memory of that night is odd because I was judging the behaviour of another person, who then turned out to be me. Philosophers might say that in these rare minutes, my ‘I-self’ (the seer of things around me) and ‘me-self’ (the one seen) were mentally separated.”
由文章第四段中“And working to observe more than you think about being observed can be an excellent way to get happier.”
由文章最后一段“We think constantly about how others see us; we look in every mirror; we check our mentions on social media; we obsess over our identity. This brings trouble. Research has shown, for example, that focusing on the world outside yourself is linked to happiness, while focusing on yourself and how others see you can lead to your moods going up and down like a yo-yo. The good news is that you can certainly increase your happiness by adopting conscious practices that help lower the amount of time you spend in an objectified state.” C“How to reduce the state of ‘me-self’.”(如何减少“me-self”的状态。)
文章第一段提到卡耐基的观点:避免争论是赢得争论的唯一方法;然后作者指出“This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments…”,由此可知,作者对卡耐基的观点持批判态度。故选A项。
根据第二段“Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad…This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.”
根据第三段中“…ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully.”
根据文章最后一段“…the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them…to ‘win’ an argument.”
故填was held。

故填the。

故填who。

One night several years ago, after filling up my car at a gas station and pulling away, I noticed a strange sound behind me in traffic. It sounded to me like someone was dragging a bumper (保险杠), so I started looking for the car to alert the driver. But no matter how fast or slow I moved, or where I turned, I couldn’t locate the car.
At this point I noticed people on the sidewalk pointing and laughing at me. I stopped and found the gas hose (软管) still attached to my car. I immediately pulled out the hose and drove back to the gas station, where I was educated on the economics of breaking a gas pump (泵).
My memory of that night is odd because I was judging the behaviour of another person, who then turned out to be me. Philosophers might say that in these rare minutes, my “I-self” (the seer of things around me) and “me-self” (the one seen) were mentally separated.
This kind of separation is unnatural. Making it your permanent state of mind would be difficult and perhaps even undesirable. Each of us can, however, purposely change the balance of time we spend as observers and as the object of observation—even without doing something as ridiculous as I did. And working to observe more than you think about being observed can be an excellent way to get happier.
We think constantly about how others see us; we look in every mirror; we check our mentions on social media; we obsess over our identity. This brings trouble. Research has shown, for example, that focusing on the world outside yourself is linked to happiness, while focusing on yourself and how others see you can lead to your moods going up and down like a yo-yo. The good news is that you can certainly increase your happiness by adopting conscious practices that help lower the amount of time you spend in an objectified state.
( )1.What happened to the author that night
A.He was probably fined.
B.He damaged the bumper.
C.He got trapped in traffic.
D.He knocked into the sidewalk.
( )2.What does “I-self” refer to at the early stage in the incident
A.The hose. B.The people.
C.The author. D.The pump.
( )3.What does the author suggest readers do in Paragraph 4
A.Separate yourselves from the outside.
B.Spend more time being an observer.
C.Avoid being an object of observation.
D.Work hard to increase happiness.
( )4.What might the author continue talking about
A.How to be aware of happiness.
B.How to spend our spare time.
C.How to reduce the state of “me-self”.
D.How to adjust our moods.

In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument—and that is to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives—and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them.Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied.Even when you win, you end up no better off.You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions—like, say, tennis tournaments.Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner comes out from all who entered.Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate (认真阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Assess its strengths and weaknesses. Raise objections (异议) and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument—not in the unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them.If we readjust our view of arguments—from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other—then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
( )5.What is the author’s attitude towards Carnegie’s understanding of argument
A.Critical. B.Supportive.
C.Tolerant. D.Uncertain.
( )6.Why do many people try to avoid arguments
A.They lack debating skills.
B.They may feel bad even if they win.
C.They fear being ignored.
D.They are not confident in themselves.
( )7.What does the underlined phrase “spell out” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Defend. B.Explain.
C.Conclude. D.Repeat.
( )8.What is the key to “winning” an argument according to the author
A.A sense of logic.
B.Solid supporting evidence.
C.Proper manners.
D.Understanding from both sides.

One night several years ago, after filling up my car at a
gas station and pulling away, I noticed a strange sound behind
me in traffic. It sounded to me like someone was dragging a

driver. But no matter how fast or slow I moved, or where I

At this point I noticed people on the sidewalk pointing and

drove back to the gas station, where I was educated on the
economics of breaking a gas pump (泵).
My memory of that night is odd because I was judging the
behaviour of another person, who then turned out to be me.
Philosophers might say that in these rare minutes, my “I-self”

This kind of separation is unnatural. Making it your
permanent state of mind would be difficult and perhaps even
undesirable. Each of us can, however, purposely change the
balance of time we spend as observers and as the object of
observation—even without doing something as ridiculous as I
did. And working to observe more than you think about being
observed can be an excellent way to get happier.

In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People,
Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that there
is only one way to get the best of an argument—and that is to
avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends
on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our
personal and social lives—and in many ways misses the point of
arguing in the first place.
1
2
3
4
5
6
7

Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is
how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的)
fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you
end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if
arguments were even just competitions—like, say, tennis
tournaments. Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until
one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else
loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to
avoid arguments.
1
2
3
4
5
6

However, there are ways to win an argument every time.
When you state your position, formulate (认真阐述) an argument
for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your
argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes
a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell
out their argument fully. Assess its strengths and weaknesses.
Raise objections (异议) and listen carefully to their replies. This
method will require effort, but practice will make you better at
it.

3
4
5

7
8
These tools can help you win every argument—not in the
unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better
sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they
disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with
them. If we readjust our view of arguments—from a verbal fight
or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all
gain respect and understanding from each other—then we
change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
