People exercise, like running or lifting weights, to stay healthy. One special exercise is called planking (平板支撑). To plank, you get down like you are going to lie on your stomach. You rest your weight on your arms and toes (脚趾) to keep your body straight. This exercise works out your abs (腹肌) and legs!
Many people can hold a plank for a minute. But 58-year-old DonnaJean Wilde held her plank for 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 11 seconds! She set the women’s world record for the longest plank time!
Wilde has always been active. But about 10 years ago, Wilde broke her wrist (手腕). She couldn’t exercise the way she was used to. She started planking. “I realized that I could read when I was planking, and I fell in love with it,” Wilde said.
Wilde first had pain in her hands and arms, but that didn’t stop her. To prepare for the record, she practiced for up to six hours a day. She would even watch movies while planking!
On the big day, Wilde planked at the high school where she used to work. Her family and students came to cheer her on! A worker from Guinness World Records kept an eye on her performance the whole time.
Wilde said the first two hours went by quickly. The next two hours were harder, however. “The last hour was the most challenging,” she said. In the final 30 minutes, Wilde just focused on breathing and stayed calm. When she broke the record, everyone shouted and cheered. Wilde planked about 10 minutes longer than the old record! “I actually can’t believe it. It feels like a dream,” Wilde said.
Wilde had advice for people. “Whatever you like, the better you get at it, the easier it becomes,” she said.
So, keep working on your goals, and one day you may break a world record too!

Our thumbs (拇指) are important for us to take and hold things. But what if we had a third thumb Dani Clode, a designer from New Zealand, invented the Third Thumb to give people another finger. It helps people do things like opening a bottle with just one hand. The Third Thumb can even make carrying a lot of things easier!
Clode made the Third Thumb while studying at the Royal College of Art in London, UK. The Third Thumb has two motors (发动机) that make it move. Users can control those motors by pressing their big toes. When you press one big toe, the Third Thumb will move towards the palm. Press the other big toe, and the Third Thumb will move towards the other fingers.
Clode worked with a team of scientists from the University of Cambridge to test the Third Thumb. They spent five days asking 596 people from age 3 to age 96 to try it. Almost all users were able to pick up and move things easily with it.
The invention can help people a lot. “For example, if someone has trouble using both hands, they can use the Third Thumb to make one hand do the work of two,” Clode said. “It can also help people who only have one hand. It’s all about helping people use their hands in new and hopefully better ways.”
Clode had advice for young people. “Start exploring,” she suggested. “Try building something, even if it’s small. And don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Inventions are all about thinking of new ways to solve problems and make life better for people. You could invent something no one has ever thought of before!”
8. What is the main use of the Third Thumb
A. To work as a new kind of toy.
B. To make people’s hands look cool.
C. To help one hand do the work of two.
D. To exercise the strength of people’s hands.
9. How do users control the Third Thumb
A. By using their voices. B. By nodding their heads.
C. By moving their fingers. D. By pressing their big toes.
10 What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Clode’s encouragement to young people.
B. Clode’s experience in avoiding mistakes.
C. Clode’s advice on how to explore the world.
D. Clode’s dream of making life better for people.
11. What is the best title for the text

C. The Third Thumb: a new body part
D. The secret of invention: creativity and teamwork

Duncan McCabe shared a 27-second digital art video, and it took him 10 months and about 700 miles-to make it.
McCabe, 32, an excellent runner and animation (动画) lover, set out on a journey in January to create a dancing stick figure. He made it using the popular GPS-tracking app Strava, which allows runners to record their routes (路线).
Using Strava’s map function, McCabe recorded 120 runs -and when he strung each of the maps together, it showed a hat-wearing stick figure dancing to the song “Purple Hat” across the streets of Toronto. McCabe’s video is part of a growing movement known as GPS art, which means using apps like Strava with location-tracking features to create digital drawings over a map of a specific region.
Rather than just one piece of static (静态的) GPS art, McCabe’s video includes many runs, requiring careful planning. McCabe was not deterred by the time required or the difficulty of mapping the routes. “If I have a long-term goal, I’m ready to work for a very long time,” said McCabe.
McCabe had seen other people try their hand at GPS designs, but none of them were in video form. “As far as I know, it’s an original idea. I’m pioneering Strava animation,” he said. Last Christmas, McCabe was chatting with his wife about ideas for a Strava animation, and she recommended a dancing figure.
McCabe actually ran farther than the app gave him credit for, as he would often have to run one to two miles while stopping the app to create diagonal lines (斜线) he needed to draw. “Honestly, it was tiring. But the project brought me a sense of achievement,” said McCabe. “It’s creativity coming out of somewhere you wouldn’t expect it. It’s fun.”
12. What did McCabe spend 10 months doing
A. Setting a world record in the running field. B. Developing a new GPS-tracking app.
C. Learning how to make animation. D. Making a dancing stick figure.
13. What does the underlined word “deterred” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Controlled. B. Encouraged. C. Stopped. D. Supported.
14. What inspired McCabe to start his project
A. A challenge from his friends. B. A suggestion from his wife.
C. A special festival event. D. A funny online video.
15. How does McCabe find his running experience
A. Challenging but satisfying. B. Dangerous but interesting.
C. Tiring but money-making. D. Boring but eye-catching.

Lily hadn’t eaten any breakfast. It was her first day at the new school, and she felt too nervous to eat. To make up for it, her mom had packed her lunchbox with her favorite peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Lily got dressed smartly and tried to make a good first impression on her new teachers and classmates. When she arrived at school, she saw her classroom and took a deep breath, feeling butterflies in her stomach.
At least Mia, who sat next to her, was friendly and welcoming. “I’m supposed to show you around,” Mia said with a bright smile. She quickly guided Lily through the school. They walked through the cafeteria (自助餐厅), where Mia explained that students usually ate there and that there was a fridge for storing lunches. “Can I put my lunchbox in the fridge ” Lily asked. “Of course!” Mia opened the fridge door, and Lily placed her lunchbox on a middle shelf (搁板).
Just before noon, the bell rang. Mia still had some exercises to finish and asked Lily to go to the cafeteria first. Lily headed there, opened the fridge, took her lunchbox and found a quiet place. She took a big bite of her sandwich right away. But something was wrong. Instead of peanut butter, she tasted beef.
In shock, Lily looked down at the lunchbox. It was identical (相同的) to hers, except for a small sticker (贴纸) that said “Mia Thompson.” She found her own lunchbox pushed further back on the same shelf. Lily had just bitten into Mia’s sandwich!
What was she going to do Mia would soon come for her lunch. Put the lunchbox back and pretend she knew nothing No. All of a sudden, she remembered seeing a small store near the school that sold sandwiches. If she hurried, she might be able to get back before Mia came for lunch. Lily rushed to the store and paid for a beef sandwich, hurrying back to school, her mind racing with worry about how Mia would react.
