Unit 2 Let's talk teens
Section 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading
Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing Sometimes, when Mr Ballmer and his 16 year old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”
Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits(轨迹).①
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.②
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There's still a lot of strictness and authority(权威) on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say.③
“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today's parents, the 40 year olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr Ballmer. “It's not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.④”

The middle child, I think, is now an “endangered species”. According to a study, in 1976, 65 per cent of mothers aged 40 to 44 had three or more children. Today, nearly two thirds of women with children have only one or two. Middle children will soon be the tiniest.
As a middle child, I am disappointed at the potential disappearance of middle children. I'm the middle of three—two boys, one girl—so I'm what's sometimes regarded as a “classic middle child”.
Being a middle child is not something you are eager for. As one middle child said to me, “There is a thing called middle child syndrome(综合征). I certainly was always aware that the middle was not a position to be admired, even as I came to see typical middle child features in myself. Middle children are natural mediators(和事佬); I avoid disagreements and habitually act as the family peacemaker. Middle children tend to be private but also long for love; I keep to myself but do not exactly hate attention.”
According to studies, middles traditionally receive less economic and emotional support from their parents. They also typically have fewer close relationships with their mothers and fathers compared with other brothers or sisters, so they tend to have more friends to fill the feeling gap.
In a study conducted by the City College of New York in which participants were asked to choose words they associate with the first, last, and middle kids, positive words such as caring and ambitious were cited concerning all three birth orders. Only middles, however, were described with such negative terms as overlooked and confused. More importantly, middles may be many things and they were the only birth order with which no one connected the term “overindulged”. It is true: their parents couldn't allow them to do or have whatever they want, especially when they are old enough, and they don't ask for everything either even if they are eager to own it occasionally.
( ) 1. Why does the author mention the study in Paragraph 1
A. To inform a definition.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To make a comparison.
D. To support his opinion.
( ) 2. What can we learn about “middle child syndrome”?
A. It is dangerous for middles to suffer from it.
B. It clearly shows the typical features of middles.
C. It is what non middle kids admire and wish for.
D. It is the result of the unsuccessful parenting style.
( ) 3. Who is an “overindulged” kid according to Paragraph 5
A. John, 3, asking his mother for dressing him.
B. Mary, 8, busy in focusing on her preference.
C. Paul, 12, unwilling to have breakfast by himself.
D. Nancy, 17, afraid to challenge the math problems.
( ) 4. What's the author's opinion about middles according to the passage
A. They are always in low spirits.
B. They stress the protection of privacy.
C. They are ignored but independent.
D. They support the family economically.

Why Do Millennials(千禧一代) Keep Changing Jobs
Millennials have been labelled as the “job hopping generation”. In fact, a recent survey showed that 49% of millennials would leave their job within the next two years! Observers from older generations may think it is caused by the youth's laziness. However, if we search deeper, there is more than meets the eye.
Instead of the traditional and practical reasons of changing jobs, such as to get better salaries or greater job stability(稳定), many millennials are inspired by value driven goals. For example, more have to seek new opportunities whenever they lack a sense of belonging in their present jobs. Additionally, some also leave their positions for companies which better suit their value system. Therefore, it is clear that many millennials do not only consider their jobs as a source of income, but in fact, seek meaning and professional achievement in their daily jobs.
Clearly, the fearlessness of millennials in seeking job opportunities has been inspired by new business models. With the rise of online platforms, millennials who prefer work life balance and flexibility have been attracted towards such jobs. Moreover, the increase of social media has also created more career paths. From food and travel bloggers to YouTube content creators, more millennials are leaving boring desk bound jobs to look for more untraditional, but certainly attractive, careers.
However, people have different opinions on job hopping. While some employers value rich experience and skills that job hopping brings about, many of them still look down upon job hopping. Some even argue in disappointment that the youths of today are lazy, unable to bear hardships and too self centred.
The 39th American President Jimmy Carter once said, “Human identity is no longer defined(定义) by what one does but by what one owns.” Indeed, his comment still rings true today. Rather than allow traditional models of success in society to define our youths, the millennial generation should be encouraged to define new horizons of success by making the right career choices guided by the right values.
( ) 5. Why are millennials more likely to move to new jobs
A. Because they are unwilling to work very hard.
B. Because they want to realize their self worth.
C. Because they hate pressure from present jobs.
D. Because they need higher income and position.
( ) 6. What does the author want to show in Paragraph 3
A. The rapid development of social media promotes new career paths.
B. There are fewer professions available to millennials on the Internet.
C. There are factors contributing to millennials' flexible job changing.
D. The tiring and boring jobs prevent millennials staying in one position.
( ) 7. What may those against job changing think of millennials
A. Courageous and noble.
B. Lazy and self centred.
C. Anxious and unconfident.
D. Creative and hard working.
( ) 8. What is the author's attitude towards millennials' career choice
A. Negative. B. Doubtful.
C. Positive. D. Concerned.

“There's no place like home.” This English saying has much truth in it: the best place to be is surrounded by our treasured possessions and our loved ones and with a roof over our head. And for many young adults, it's the only affordable place to stay, somewhere where they can receive first class service from Mum and Dad. But this comes at a price!
In some countries, it's quite traditional for people in their late teens and early 20s to live at home with their parents, but in other places, flying the nest to start their own independent life is very desirable. But there's been a growing trend, in the UK at least, for young people to return home to live—or not to leave home at all.
A survey by a price comparison website found that 18% of adult children in the UK said they were moving back home because of debt, compared with 8% last year. More young people had lost their jobs, and others couldn't afford their rent compared with the previous year. So, it's easy to see why they're increasingly becoming “home birds”.
The BBC's Lucy Hooker explains that many returning adult children enjoy home comforts. But for the “hoteliers”, that's Mum and Dad, the survey found the average cost to them has gone up sharply, and that they are sacrificing luxuries and holidays to look after their “big kids”. Emma Craig from MoneySuperMarket says, “They're trying to look after their children more. If your child comes home and you see them struggling financially, you feel more awkward asking them for rent or to contribute. It tugs on your heartstrings more.”
With parents splashing out around £1,886 on takeaway food, buying new furniture and upgrading their Wi Fi for the benefit of their offspring, it's easy for the returning children to put their feet up and make themselves at home. That's before they learn a home truth—that one day it might be their own kids who'll be checking into the hotel of Mum and Dad!

A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain.

Whether your teenager is a part of an unhealthy community or doesn't have any community ties at all, helping them develop quality relationships can be tough. Here are a few things you can do to help your teen:
Build Their Confidence
The teenage years can be the hardest, even if they may not openly talk about it with you. Your child is dealing with hormones(激素), changing peer groups, and big life events, while sometimes struggling with low self esteem. Unfortunately, this can cause them to isolate themselves and ignore the advice of their adult peers or role models. The more you can empower your teen to develop positive behavioral and life skills, the more confident they will be when they are a part of a community on their own.
Model Conflict Resolution
According to prominent therapy models and practitioners, even the best of friends are going to have fights, but not every argument means the end of a friendship or community. Conflict is a natural part of relationships. Help them work on “fighting fair” and recognizing when to take a break from an argument to cool off.
Particularly when it comes to social media, where misunderstandings are common and conflict can quickly get out of control, teach your teen the value of saying “I think we're both really upset. Let's talk about this in person tomorrow.” The best way to do this is to model healthy conflict resolution yourself.
Help Connect Them
Sometimes, your child needs guidance when making positive relationships in their school or social group. Encouraging them to get involved in a sport, hobby, after school club, or youth group can help tremendously(非常地) when it's time for them to build a community with like minded people. Engage in community service as a family. When they serve others in their community, they will feel more invested in the group's well being and be more open to making connections with others.
Overall, helping your child build connections within a supportive community has tremendous benefits. The need for love and belonging is part of our basic needs as human beings. It provides beneficial life skills for teens.
( ) 5. How can parents help teenagers to build their confidence
A. By ignoring the advice of others.
B. By making them isolate themselves.
C. By helping them develop a positive attitude.
D. By openly having a talk with them.
( ) 6. To resolve the conflict, the teens should ________.
A. turn to therapy models and practitioners
B. have a fight with their best friend
C. cool when they are having an argument
D. find a right way to deal with it themselves
( ) 7. What should teens do to connect themselves
A. They should be engaged in activities in their school or community.
B. They should be with like minded people when in their community.

Researchers from the Yale Child Study Center collected 21 days of daily diaries from parents and teens from 151 families. Participating teens were in the 9th and 10th grades, and ranged from 13 to 16 years old. By analyzing these diaries, the researchers could connect parents' displays of warmth with daily fluctuations(波动) in how loved their teens were feeling. “The daily methodology is suited to providing caregivers with practical suggestions for daily life,” says Beata Ujvari, who was not involved in the study.
Regardless of the general closeness of the parent teen relationship, the researchers found that teens reported feeling more loved on days when parents reported showing more warmth in the form of affection, understanding, or praise. Likewise, teens reported feeling less loved on days when parents reported more conflicts than usual. More importantly, the researchers also found that parents could weaken the impact of conflicts by showing their teens warmth. In other words, on days when parents were warm, high levels of conflicts didn't reduce how loved teens felt.
To weaken conflicts' impact, warmth had to be shown on the same day, but the warmth and conflicts did not need to be related, the researchers said.
“Parents often complain about the conflicts they are experiencing with their children,” said John Coffey, the study's lead author, “but our study suggests conflicts are manageable.”
The study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting daily fluctuations in feeling loved are common even in long term relationships. How parents and teens communicate and resolve conflicts may be most important to maintaining a healthy relationship in the long term, said the researchers.
“The study findings are particularly useful right now,” added Coffey, “because parents and their children are spending much time together. Finding ways to be kind and warm will help lessen potential conflicts and ensure children feel loved.”
( ) 1. The main purpose of the study conducted by Yale Child Study Center is to .
A. investigate the daily conflicts between parents and teens
B. explore the impact of age and gender on teens' emotional well being
C. provide practical suggestions for caregivers to avoid conflicts with their teens

( ) 2. How can parents reduce conflicts' effect on their teens according to the text
A. By displaying emotional warmth on the same day.
B. By spending more time with their teens.
C. By showing understanding related to the conflicts.
D. By expressing agreement on whatever their teens say.
( ) 3. It can be inferred from the study that .
A. conflicts between parents and teens are entirely unavoidable
B. parents' warmth can effectively reduce conflicts between parents and teens

Dear Your Teen,
I'm struggling with my 15 year old son over his music lessons. He has enrolled in piano lessons and is required to take an exam to complete the course, for which I have already paid. Since he started high school, he has put in a lot of effort at school, but he doesn't want to dedicate much time to his music lessons because his schedule is filled with his school homework. I want to respect his decision, but I also think he should be responsible for finishing what he started. Should I compromise when he tells me he wants to give up I'd really appreciate it if you could give me some advice. Thanks!
Linda
Expert Tori Cordiano
It's good for your son to work so hard at the start of high school! The transition(过渡) from middle school to high school typically brings teens more homework in harder classes and increases expectations about managing their workload more independently. It requires teens to take a hard look at their schedules and out of class activities to decide what feels reasonable to stick to while also doing their best at school. It is a more important part of adolescence(青春期) to help your son realize what he needs for his own well being than concern which activities he sticks with and which he drops.
If you decide that your son does need to finish the course, a good communication about how to ease his amount of work in other places may be in order. For example, if your son spends a long time on schoolwork and spends his free time on the piano, you may decide to give him a break from other tasks temporarily(临时地), while he sees his lessons through to the exam.
You raise a concern many parents have about compromising when your son tells you he wants to quit. However, that doesn't sound like what is happening here. Unless he often stops and starts many activities and fails to keep at them, you might instead look at this situation as your son advocating for the time and space he needs to take good care of himself and meet his own high academic expectations. That's exactly the kind of exploration and self knowledge we want adolescents to develop.
( ) 5. Why did Linda write to Your Teen
A. Her son spends much time on the piano.
B. Her son isn't responsible for his own decision.
C. Her son desires to dedicate much to homework.
D. Her son wants to quit the piano lessons she has bought.
( ) 6. According to Cordiano, what should senior one students think about seriously
A. Doing more homework in harder lessons.

Mr Smith, my 10 grade English teacher, was one of the teachers who I would never forget and the story between Mr Smith and me was the most amazing one I wanted to share.
When I was young at school, I loved talking, which was not always appreciated by Mr Smith. Mr Smith was a teacher whom no one liked because he was too strict. He stood about 5.5 feet, was very thin and wore his hair pulled back in a way that gave him a horsey(像马的) look. Whenever he got upset, he would lower his head and look at you over the top of his glasses.
One day in his class I was busy talking. I didn't realize he had stopped teaching, staring straight at me. “Tom, I would like to see you after school.”
Later, Mr Smith explained in a low, but very firm voice that showed he expected me to listen when he was talking. For punishment he told me to write a 1,000 word essay(文章) on education and its effect on the society. He wanted it handed in by the following Wednesday.
Well, I met my deadline(最后期限). I was confident. It was a good paper. And I expected a word of praise from him. The next day in class, however, he was looking at me over his glasses. He called me forward and returned my paper. “Go back and rewrite,” he said. “Remember, each paragraph is supported to begin with a topic sentence.” When he gave my paper back a second time, he corrected the grammar. The third time, the spelling. The fourth time, it was punctuation. The fifth, it wasn't neat(整洁的) enough. I was sick!
The sixth time, I rewrote the whole paper slowly in ink, leaving enough space. When he saw the paper, he removed his glasses, and accepted it with a smile. After that, I put the whole thing out of my mind.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
One morning after three weeks, Mr Smith came into the class happily._________

1. 根据上文“Whether you're a child, teenager, young adult or are middle aged, respecting your parents … they love you unconditionally throughout your life.”
2. 根据上文“For younger children, this may mean not touching jewelry or other valuable things.”

根据上文“My dad is the best horseshoe pitcher in Webly County, and I aim to be the same.”及下文“to have my name carved on the Webly County Horseshoe Pitching Association Trophy Cup, just like my dad's name had been for the last twelve years”可知,像爸爸一样参加投手比赛并得到奖杯是作者的努力目标。

根据上文“I signed up for the tournament.”

根据第一段中“My __2__ was to have my name carved on the Webly County Horseshoe Pitching Association Trophy Cup”可知,这些选手角逐的最终目标是一个奖杯。

Dear_Melody,
I'm sorry to hear about the disagreement with your parents.
It's understandable that they are concerned about your studies. However, pursuing music, something you love, is equally important for your personal growth. I suggest you have an open dialogue with your parents, explaining your passion for music and how it balances your life. Maybe you can agree on a schedule that satisfies both your musical interests and academic responsibilities.
I hope you find a harmonious solution and continue to enjoy music.
Yours,
Li_Hua
