Unit 3 Getting along with others
Section 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading
Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。[2025南师大附中期中]
Hollywood may have warned about the risks of building up relationships with artificial intelligence(AI), but one computer scientist says we may be missing a trick if we do not accept the positives that human machine relationships have to offer.①
Tony Prescott, professor of robotics at the University of Sheffield, argues that AI has an important role to play in preventing human loneliness. “Just as we develop meaningful relationships with pets, and have no doubt about children playing with dolls, so should we be open to the value of AI to adults,”② he says.
“Human loneliness is often described as a cycle in which loneliness leads to lower self worth, which discourages further communication with people,”③ Prescott writes in a new book The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence. “There may be ways in which AI companionship could help break it by strengthening feelings of self worth and helping maintain or improve social skills. If so, relationships with AIs could support people to find companionship with human and artificial others.”
With more than a third of Americans reporting “serious loneliness”, the loneliness problem has become clear in recent years. Whether AI can, or should, be part of the solution is not a new debate. Sherry Turkle, professor of social science at MIT, has warned that forming relationships with machines could backfire(事与愿违), and lead people to have fewer secure and satisfying human relationships.
Murali Doraiswamy, professor of medicine at Duke University, said, “Right now, all the evidence points to having a close human friend as the best solution to loneliness. But unless society puts social connectedness on top of the list, robots are a solution for the millions of people who have no friends.”
Researchers may soon know whether people turn to AI for company. Tech firms are building chatbots to be ever more responsive to emotions. In 2024, OpenAI asked Scarlett Johansson to be the voice of their chatbot, GPT 4o, to “help consumers to feel comfortable”.④ Johansson refused, but the chatbot came onto the market with a voice that friends and family thought was hers. OpenAI has since suspended(中止) the voice option “out of respect for Ms Johansson”.

Friends are very important to us. Sometimes we just want to develop some new friendships. Here are some of the best apps for you to make new friends.
Atleto
Research shows that exercising with a friend promotes more motivation and healthier lifestyle habits. Atleto is an app that builds on this “exercise contagion(传染)” phenomenon by bringing together athletic people to take exercise and organize group activities. You can choose from over 40 sports and find your community of people who like to be in a sweat.
Friender
Studies show that we're eager to find people similar to us. Suppose you're sick of boring surface level conversations. Then Friender solves that problem quickly with an algorithm(算法) that only matches you based on your favorite activities and interests. This friend finding app makes it easy to get into conversations that you care about. If you don't have many hobbies to type into an app, one of the easiest ways to start is to try out new bobbies.
Pawdate
Dogs are great companions, but sometimes it's nice to talk to humans too. This app connects pet owners to meet up at dog parks or walk with their pups. You get to set up doggie play dates and find new friends at the same time. It's a win win.
Skout
Skout started back in 2007 to help people make new friends. The matches are based on geographical distances and preferences. It's perfect for meeting people while traveling, moving and entering a new chapter of life. Skout is able to discover people directly by checking into a location and seeing who else on the app is there.

When it comes to team assembly(团队组建), people who are both trustworthy and competent are the most sought after. However, those who are friendly and trustworthy are more likely to be selected than those who are known for just their skill competence and personal reputation, according to new research from Binghamton University.
“We assume that people are selected for important tasks due to their knowledge, skills and abilities. However, this research suggests that people may often get picked because team members feel comfortable with them,” said Cynthia Maupin, assistant professor of organizational behavior and leadership in Binghamton University's School of Management. “People may be willing to sacrifice a bit in terms of performance in order to have a really positive team experience.”
Maupin and her colleagues focused on a group of MBA students to conduct their study. Students were randomly assigned to different teams to carry out class projects and assignments. Toward the end of the semester, students were asked to form their own teams, and evaluate why they selected each member of their group.
“To find out how students signaled to others that they might be someone who would be good to team up with in the future, we studied their use of either challenging or supportive voice,” Maupin said.
Challenging voice: Communicating in a way that challenges the present situation and is focused on new ideas and efficiency.
Supportive voice: Communicating in a way that strengthens social ties and trust, and builds friendly unity of a team.
The researchers found that students who exhibited both voices were the most in demand people when it came to assembling teams. However, students who only used supportive voice to exhibit their friendliness and trustworthiness were more sought after than those who only signaled their competence through the use of challenging voice.
Maupin said the findings have major implications(影响) for the workplace. “People should realize the way they speak up can have a strong effect on informal teaming up at a later point and that supportive voice helps establish harmonious relationships and a sense of trust amongst individuals.”
( ) 4. Who are more likely to be selected into a team
A. Those willing to make sacrifices.
B. Those reliable and easy to get along with.
C. Those with ideal skill competence.
D. Those known for good personal reputation.
( ) 5. How did Maupin and her colleagues carry out the study
A. They assigned MBA students to different teams on purpose.
B. They studied college students' cooperative competence.
C. They took a group of MBA students as research objects.
D. They studied MBA students' use of challenging or cooperative voice.
( ) 6. What does the underlined word “signaled” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Replied. B. Demanded.

A[2025盐城八校期末联考]
So many of us hold on to little resentment(仇怨) from an argument, a misunderstanding, or some other painful event. We wait for someone else to reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rebuild a friendship or family relationship.
A friend of mine whose health isn't very good, recently told me that she hadn't spoken to her son for almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn't speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted at first, “I can't do that. He's the one who should apologize.” She was willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and sincerely said sorry to her. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger we turn “a small thing” into “a big thing” in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn't mean that you're wrong. Everything will be fine. You'll experience the peace of letting go as well as the joy of letting others be right. You'll also notice that as you reach out and let others be “right”, they will become less defensive(戒备的) and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But if for some reason they don't, that's okay too. You will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world and certainly you'll be more peaceful yourself.
( ) 1. What does the underlined word “resisted” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Regretted. B. Refused. C. Recalled. D. Reminded.

A. She realized her mistakes.
B. She lost the battle and died.
C. She received her son's apology.

( ) 3. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. Holding on to the right position leads to resentment.
B. Turning a small thing into a big one will make a difference.
C. Being peaceful is more important than being right in disagreement.
D. To avoid arguments and misunderstandings means seeking for happiness.
( ) 4. What's the purpose of the passage
A. To tell the readers to reach out first.
B. To instruct the readers how to apologize.
C. To teach the readers how to gain inner peace.
D. To inform the readers of the importance of peace.

As long as I can remember having a phone in my hand, I've been a terrible replier. When a new group chat is created, the members will come to laugh at my inability to respond to a simple question in a matter of hours.
I'm not a horrible replier in all aspects of my life. In fact, I pride myself on my swift response time when it comes to work emails, my manager and my mum. “Call me instead,” I tell my friends. “I'm a much better caller.” They know if it's urgent and they need me, I'll pick up and always be there. But if I read a message and I categorize it as non urgent, then it's a different story.
When it comes to the group chats, the conversations move so rapidly that if I'm not present for five minutes, I've suddenly missed 67 messages concerning daily matters. By the time I've responded to their messages, many have already messaged back, and then I mentally file their non urgent messages away in the non urgent cabinet(柜) again, and thus the problematic cycle continues—the unavoidable iMessage quicksand(流沙).
I want to stress that I do love my friends and that I am grateful to be included in all of the group chats. I simply find it a headache to keep up with the never ending stream of messages that we're flooded with throughout the day. In these moments, my friends' messages go unanswered and I sometimes feel like throwing my phone into a lake, lying on the floor and staring at a wall.
Alas, I recently asked my friend Tully how she felt about my texting habits. She's the friend you can always rely on to give you the non sugar coated truth. “You take three to five business days to respond if we're lucky,” she tells me. Ouch, but probably not wrong. “To be fair,” she adds, “when we do eventually get an answer out of you—you are always down for the plans, you always show up when we need you, you never cancel and you're usually the one driving 40 minutes across town to see us on the south side so … we can handle the group chat silence in return for that kind of friendship.”
( ) 5. What will happen if a friend sends the author a message in a group chat
A. The author will respond very soon.
B. The author will call her friend back.
C. It might be deleted and put into the cabinet.
D. It might be answered in several hours or even days.
( ) 6. What is the basis for the author's decision on response time to a message
A. The quality of friendship. B. The degree of urgency.
C. Random choice. D. Time order.
( ) 7. What does the author focus on in the third and fourth paragraphs
A. The value of interpersonal relationship.
B. The importance of being in a group chat.
C. Problems with group chat messages.
D. Methods of using group chats in our life.
( ) 8. Which of the following can best describe the author
A. Creative. B. Irresponsible.
C. Lazy. D. Trustworthy.

In the animal kingdom, killer whales(虎鲸) are social stars: they travel in varied family groups, care for grandchildren, and even imitate human speech. Now, scientists are adding one more behaviour to the list: forming fast friendships. A new study shows killer whales can rival animals such as chimpanzees and macaques(a kind of monkey), and even humans when it comes to the kind of “social touch” that indicates strong bonds.
Some ocean animals maintain social structures, including male dolphins that learn the “names” of their close allies(盟友). But there is little data about wild killer whales. That's where drone technology came in. Michael Weiss, a behavioural ecologist, teamed up with his colleagues to launch drones, flying them 30 to 120 metres above a group of killer whales. That was high enough not to trouble the whales, marking the first time drones have been used to study friendly physical contact in whales.
The researchers recorded over 800 instances of physical contact between individuals. Those included hugs, back to back and nose to nose touches between pairs of whales. Other whales playfully threw young whales into the air, letting them fall into the water. Besides, the drone images revealed clear preferences among individuals, usually for one “best friend” of the same sex and age. Take J49 and J51—two distantly related young males aged 9 and 6—for instance. “Every time you see a group of whales, those two are right there interacting with each other,” Weiss says.
The young led most of these interactions, rather than the older females or males. Older males, in particular, were less important. “The young individuals really seem to be the glue(胶水) holding the groups together,” Weiss says. As individuals age, this gradual loss of “centrality” is known in many social mammals, including humans. That finding is “especially appealing” to Stacey Tecot, who wasn't involved in the study. “Scientists have long observed this social aging trend in animals, but there are still many unanswered questions,” she says. That's certainly on the researchers' radar. “We're already gathering new data, with more advanced equipment,” says Weiss.
( ) 1. What does the underlined word “rival” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Benefit from. B. Be equal to.
C. Depend on. D. Be fond of.
( ) 2. What is new about Weiss' research
A. The research method.
B. The variety of species.
C. The size of the research team.

( ) 3. What did Weiss find about J49 and J51
A. They have a stable friendship.
B. Their interactions are more complicated.
C. Their communicating ways change frequently.
D. They prefer playing with young female whales.
( ) 4. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. More researchers will be involved in the study.
B. Other scientists take a negative attitude to the research.
C. Researchers will collect more data to study killer whales.
D. Researchers will uncover the social aging trend in animals soon.
B[2024长沙雨花期末]
Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how to make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few—for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy between them and the reasons for their shared interests vary greatly. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors are not of great importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests—they often talk about “being_on_the_same_wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they depend on one another. People who want to be friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to stand differences.
In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background and break down barriers of age, class, or race.
( ) 5. According to the passage, ________.
A. friends are those who must share their interests
B. friends are closer than people who just get on with each other
C. all the people know how to make friends
D. every student has six friends
( ) 6. We can learn from the passage that________.
A. there are no special ceremonies to strengthen friendship
B. friendship can overcome all differences between two people
C. standing differences in opinion can lead to friendship
D. friendship can be strengthened by smiles and soft voices
( ) 7. Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage
A. Even friends may have different opinions.
B. Someone's habits may annoy his friends.
C. It generally takes time for people to become close friends.
D. Friends never argue with each other.
( ) 8. When people talk about “being on the same wavelength”, they mean that they________.

Similar to social anxiety, friendship anxiety refers to an overwhelming sense of worry about friendships and interactions with friends. Those with friendship anxiety often worry that their friends secretly find them annoying(烦人的) or don't want to be around them. __1__.
Communicate openly and honestly about your anxiety
While it may be difficult to open up to your friends about how you're feeling, it's one of the best ways to deal with your anxiety. __2__. You never know—your friends could also be experiencing friendship anxiety, and this is a great way for you both to deal with it together.
__3__
Friendships can provide social and emotional support, but it's important to remember that they can't meet all of your needs. It's possible that you're experiencing friendship anxiety because you're trying to get too much satisfaction from your friendships. Be realistic about what you want from your friendships and what they can actually provide and look for other ways you can be emotionally satisfied.
Focus on quality over quantity when it comes to friends
Sometimes, people with friendship anxiety worry about whether or not they have enough friends and constantly try to make new connections. __4__. It's better to have one or two friends who truly care about you than a group of “friends” you're not actually that close to. Choose friends who have your back and want the best for you.
Give yourself time to overcome your feelings
You likely won't get over your friendship anxiety overnight, and that's okay. __5__. Accept yourself for where you are now, and remember that progress is progress, no matter how small it may seem. Having friendship anxiety doesn't make you a bad friend—if anything, it shows how deeply you care about your friendships. You're putting in the work to make sure you can support your friends as much as possible.
A. However, this often leads to more stress
B. Set realistic expectations about your friendships
C. Learn to be more comfortable doing things alone
D. There are some ways to deal with friendship anxiety
E. Some tips on helping a friend who has anxiety are as follows
F. Don't be too hard on yourself if you struggle with any of these steps

Ⅳ. 读后续写。[2025枣庄期末]
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Grace was unsure how the cruel rumor(谣言) had started, but it was rapidly spreading throughout the school. Students whispered it as she walked through the halls. Some pointed fingers, while others wrote notes in class. The rumor falsely claimed that “Grace gets good grades because she cheats in her exams.” This was entirely untrue. Grace dedicated herself to her studies, spending countless hours after school reviewing her notes and preparing for tests. She truly cared about her education and even missed a few friends' birthday parties to hit the books.
Grace always actively participated in class discussions, ensured her homework was completed on time, and never missed a lesson, even when exhaustion set in from her efforts. Her commitment to her studies was a source of pride for her, so the rumor felt especially hurtful. Despite trying to be kind and supportive to everyone around her, she couldn't understand why this was happening.
One day in science class, the students were divided into groups for a lab experiment, and Grace was paired with Joe, someone she wasn't enthusiastic about working with. Joe had been unkind to her ever as Grace had missed his birthday party to study. Grace suspected that Joe might have even been the one who started the rumor about her cheating.
Still, Grace decided to put her feelings aside for the sake of the project. She thought about how important it was for their teamwork to succeed. As they began the experiment, she focused on cooperation, though the tension between them was obvious. Grace hoped that if she remained dedicated to the task, perhaps she could show Joe that hard work and honesty truly mattered.
But Joe said all Grace cared about was being the best, and that was why she cheated.

3. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Take J49 and J51—two distantly related young males aged 9 and 6—for instance. ‘Every time you see a group of whales, those two are right there interacting with each other,’ Weiss says.”可知,J49和J51是两头虎鲸的代码,每次看到它们时,它们总是在互相交流,所以它们有稳定的友谊。
4. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“‘Scientists have long observed this social aging trend in animals, but there are still many unanswered questions,’ she says. That's certainly on the researchers' radar. ‘We're already gathering new data, with more advanced equipment,’ says Weiss.”可知,研究人员将收集更多数据来研究虎鲸。

6. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“In contrast with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association between two people.”可知,没有什么特殊仪式能加强两人之间的友谊。
7. 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests”可知,有些朋友之间也会争论,故D项“朋友之间从不争吵”在文中没有暗示。

【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了友谊焦虑的定义和几种处理友谊焦虑的方法。
1. 根据上文“Similar to social anxiety, friendship anxiety refers to … often worry that their friends secretly find them annoying or don't want to be around them.”可知,上文提出友谊焦虑这一问题。D项“有一些方法可以应对友谊焦虑”引出下文关于如何应对友谊焦虑的具体建议。
2. 根据上文“While it may be difficult to open up to your friends about how you're feeling, it's one of the best ways to deal with your anxiety.”可知,上文建议我们向朋友敞开心扉。G项“告诉你的朋友你的感受有助于建立友谊中的信任”延续上文内容,符合语境。
3. 空处为小标题,应概括本段主要内容。根据下文“Be realistic about what you want from your friendships and what they can actually provide and look for other ways you can be emotionally satisfied.”可知,本段主要讲述了对友谊的期望应当符合现实。B项“对你的友谊保持切实的期待”与本段内容相符。
4. 根据上文“Sometimes, people with friendship anxiety worry about whether or not they have enough friends and constantly try to make new connections.”可知,有友谊焦虑的人会不断尝试建立新的联系。A项“然而,这通常会导致更多的压力”与上文形成转折,指出这样做的缺陷。同时与下文“It's better to have one or two friends who truly care about you than a group of ‘friends’ you're not actually that close to.”保持一致,指出不需要不断建立新的联系。
5. 根据上文“You likely won't get over your friendship anxiety overnight, and that's okay.”可知,克服友谊焦虑需要时间。F项“如果你在这些步骤中遇到任何困难,不要对自己太苛刻”与上文一致,符合语境。

Dear_Mary,
I'm delighted to receive your letter and appreciate your interest in discussing the qualities of a good friend.
From my perspective, a good friend should be loyal, understanding, and reliable. First of all, loyalty forms the backbone of friendship, ensuring trust and confidence in each other. Additionally, understanding is crucial as it allows us to support each other through life's ups and downs. Lastly, a reliable friend is someone who is always there when you need them, offering a helping hand without hesitation.
I believe these qualities make the relationship last. What about you Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
